PCGamesN Friday, June 6, 2025 5:56 PM Code Vein came out back in 2019 and immediately stood apart from other soulslike games for its anime-inspired visual style and more straightforward storytelling. Though it has the demanding combat and interconnected world design of games like Elden Ring, Sekiro, Dark Souls, and Sekiro, creator Bandai Namco filtered these concepts through the bold cartoon style of a horror anime, attracting a sizable audience in the process. Seven years on, the studio's just announced that it's at work on a follow-up to the first project, with Code Vein 2 set to expand on its predecessor's concepts. PCGamesN Friday, June 6, 2025 5:32 PM There are so many games created with direct influence from FromSoftware's action RPGs that a new genre has been created from projects similar to Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Sekiro, Demon's Souls, and Bloodborne. What sets the most worthwhile of these soulslike games apart, though, isn't their ability to replicate the unforgiving combat design of From's catalog, but their approach to making absorbing, often foreboding settings. It's in this kind of world design that 2020's Mortal Shell excelled. Now that we've just seen a first glimpse of its sequel, Mortal Shell 2, it looks like creator Cold Symmetry is offering an increasingly detailed nightmare world to explore that continues this effort. PCGamesN Friday, June 6, 2025 12:16 PM When is the Silent Hill f release date? Since the release of the first game in 1999, Keiichiro Toyama's dark psychological horror series has garnered legions of fans, fast becoming one of the most important franchises in gaming history. Ignoring the poorly received mobile game The Short Message, interactive TV show Ascension, and the remake of Silent Hill 2, there hasn't been a new Silent Hill game proper since Downpour in 2012. It's been even longer since a really good one. That looks set to change with Silent Hill f, a fully fledged, mainline Silent Hill game, but one that exists separately from the well-known worlds of James Sunderland and Heather/Cheryl Mason. Instead of being set in Silent Hill, the psychological prison that descends on the aforementioned characters' town is instead found in 1960s Japan as schoolgirl Hinako faces her own demons in the horror game. PCGamesN Friday, June 6, 2025 11:39 AM After its new GPUs failed to chart in the last two Steam Hardware Surveys, AMD has been dealt another blow in the graphics card stats world. According to the latest figures, AMD Radeon GPU market share has now tumbled to its lowest ever figure, falling from 15% at the end of 2024 to just 8% for the first quarter of 2025. That time period accounts for the first three months of 2025, which included the release of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT on March 6, a card that we praised as the best gaming GPU in its league, but which has been a struggle to find in stock at its MSRP since launch. There is a bigger picture here, of course, including the fact that Nvidia released two new high-end GPUs in January, in a market sector where AMD doesn't provide any competition, with the RTX 5070 series also launching later in the quarter. In the case of Cait Sith, it features a black and white color scheme like the tuxedo cat. It also wears a crown and red cape, just like the character. The comment noted it almost ended up being two frogs, to represent how the character rides a Moogle. The Red XIII frog is red with accents that mimic his markings, and it features two feathers behind its eyes. It also has a scar over the right eye.
Here are the two pieces of FFVII Rebirth concept art of Cait Sith and Red XIII as frogs after being afflicted by a Toad spell or Frog Song.

This isn't the first time Square Enix shared concept art of the frog status effect in FFVII Remake and Rebirth, as the characters' frogs resemble them when the Toad form is in effect. Back in 2022, around the first game in the trilogy's launch, we got a better look at the Aerith, Cloud, Tifa, and Barret designs.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Rebirth is on the PS5 and PC. There's no release window for the third entry in this remake trilogy yet. FFVII Remake will also come to the Switch 2.

Bandai Namco announced exactly what is different between the Switch and Switch 2 versions of the new Tamagotchi Plaza game coming out later this month. It turns out the one for the new console includes three shops the other doesn't. This is because all three involve minigames that use the Joy-Con mouse support only present on the latest system. There will also be an upgrade pack that adds those three shops to the Switch version if someone eventually gets the new console.
There are three shops, though one of them is a hybrid of the first two. In the Sushi Shop, you will hold the Joy-Con in mouse mode and press buttons to create the sushi your customers request. The Shuriken Shop involves getting throwing stars and hitting targets with them. However, to throw them you hold the Joy-Con in mouse mode with the sensors pointed up, then swipe your hand across the top after aiming. The Sushi Shuriken Shop combines the two elements, as you make requested sushi, then flip the Joy-Con ever to toss it like a shuriken at the person who wanted it.
Here's the Tamagotchi Plaza Switch 2 trailer showing the gameplay for those three shops. There is also a picture-in-picture video that shows the Joy-Con controls for each one's minigame.
Tamagotchi Plaza will come to the Switch and Switch 2 on June 27, 2025, and the Switch 2 version will feature more shops. Both versions work with the Tamagotchi Uni virtual pet, which is available worldwide.

Level-5 released the Switch 2 version of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, and at the same time confirmed camera adjustments based on player feedback are on the way. There's a new trailer showing the gameplay changes for the latest release, as well as some screenshots showing the changes to the view after players requested changes.
Ahead of the Switch 2 debut of Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Level-5 shared brief videos highlighting the frame rate and graphics updates. This latest video offers a more extensive look at gameplay. It began by showing peeks at how the graphics are improved in this version. Then, it offers examples of the frame rate updates when fighting, gathering, and crafting. The loading times come up after that to show how quickly it is to transition between time periods.
As for the camera changes in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, there will be better angles and greater visibility. The two images shared by Level-5 seem to be taken from Ginormosia. In each, the field of vision is far longer. The patch adding them will show up on all platforms in mid-June 2025.

Samantha Kelly took to her official SamanthaKellyPeach Instagram account to confirm that she is no longer the voice of Princess Peach or Toad as of Mario Kart World. In the social media post, she noted that Nintendo told her new actors replaced her on June 5, 2025, launch day for both the game and Switch 2 console. [Thanks, DaKardii on Reddit!]
Here's a screenshot of voice actress Samantha Kelly announcing she no longer plays Peach or Toad in Super Mario games starting with Mario Kart World. Her full statement on the account was, "Thank you for so many years of friendship and joy. I'm sad that it's over, I truly would have wanted to voice Peach and Toad forever. Nintendo let me know yesterday that they decided to recast these roles. I'm grateful that I got to do these voices for so many years. Peach and Toad are such strong and beautiful characters that I pray they live forever no matter who voices them. So much love."

She is one of three voice actresses known to play Princess Peach and Toad in the Super Mario series. Jen Taylor was the first person to take on the roles. She started work on the games in 1999, with the first entry she worked on being Mario Golf for the N64. Nicole Mills played Princess Peach in some Mario & Luigi and Super Mario Strikers titles. Kelly ended up portroying both since Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii in 2007.
Mario Kart World is available for the Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide.

When the NieR: Automata 2B and A2 bunny girl figures first debuted, there ended up being a large amount of demand, and so Good Smile Company announced a second round of pre-orders for both of them. This applies to the US storefront. They are $332.99 each.
While this is a second run, the launch window is the same. The A2 will show up first. She'll launch in Japan in October 2025, then the US in Q1 2026. Back when Good Smile Company revealed the 2B one back in March 2025, it had a December 2025 release estimate for Japan and Q2 2026 for the US. That remains the same for this one. So there's no penalty for having waiting to commit to one or both of them.
The contents of each shipment will also remain the same. With A2, you get her in a bunny girl swimsuit with glossy finish. Her hair is long, with a black bunny ear headband. She also wears black fabric fishnet tights. 2B also wears a similar swimsuit and bunny ears, though she does also have some sleeves on her arms. She comes with an additional head part, so you can display her with or without her visor.
Here's how both the NieR: Automata 2B and A2 bunny girl figures look, as a reminder.

Water is pretty scarce in Dune Awakening, but there are some useful methods to try and manage the thirst on your adventures.
Managing your thirst and hydration is crucial unless you want to die a painful death and lose in-game progression. One of the easiest ways to secure water fast is by acquiring blood, which is, yeah, ugh. However, there are other methods available to sustainably produce water on your own.
Table of contents
Dune Awakening Blood Purifier explained
At first, the only option for water is to absorb the dew from plants. You can also come across certain installations that will quench your thirst. Unfortunately, your situation won't improve until you can unlock and craft a few upgrades.
![]()
The Blood Purifier is a simple item that converts blood into water in Dune Awakening. To use it, you'll need to get a Blood Extractor, enabling you to obtain blood from any fallen enemy. The blood is then stored in Blood Sacks. Once you're back at your base, unload the blood into the Blood Purifier and let the process complete.
Blood Purifier can be unlocked early inside the game, and you can use several simultaneously. I recommend using at least three of them if you frequently need water, as the processing time is pretty high. You'll also rarely miss out on blood, as there are always enemies to slaughter.
Dune Awakening Stillsuit explained
If you're completing the early game quests, you'll unlock the Fabricator pretty quickly. The Fabricator will allow you to create a Stillsuit using Micro-sandwich Fabric. This item is available as loot from Scavenger Camps, or you can purchase it from traders.
![]()
With this item, you'll never run out of water completely, which is a perfect solution. However, the water production rate is limited, and you'll still need dew from plants occasionally. Once the Stillsuit is produced, you can drink the water produced by it to manage your thirst.
Which is the best way to create and store water in Dune Awakening?
The best method is to use a Windtrap or a Moisture Harvester. You can research these items after you reach Griffin's Research Tradepost. You'll have a set of quests to complete after visiting the place. Once you're done, you'll get the chance to craft the items.
They produce water passively at your base and act as storage sources, so your base will never run out of it. While running back to your base has some inconveniences, you'll be able to stop looking for blood from enemies, and no longer have to depend on the meager production rate of the Stillsuit.

I'm not at all a fan of the latest Marvel Rivals meta, but I've been drawn back into the third-person shooter thanks to a very unique and special experimental mode recently added to the game by NetEase.
If you've missed out on the news, the limited time mode in Marvel Rivals is called Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol, and it's like an entirely new game on top of the existing hero shooter that's currently at the top of my shit-list as far as how playing it makes me feel.
![]()
Ever since the season 2.5 update, Marvel Rivals has been more frustrating for me than anything else. The over-abundance of flying heroes like Ultron and Storm, along with new ridiculous team-ups like the one for Peni Parker and Rocket Raccoon, has the game feeling more like a chore than a joy. But with Ultron's BMP mode, I'm finding reasons to boot it up again.
Auto-battlers, or Auto Chess as the game type has come to be known, are not for everyone. Games like Teamfight Tactics, Hearthstone Battlegrounds, Super Auto Pets, and Backpack Battles scratch a certain itch in that you're playing the game, but you're not. You're relaxing and doing minimal work, but also watching numbers get bigger and enemies go boom. You kind of either like it or you don't.
I, for one, love it. I can't say the same for some of my teammates in the Rivals variant, like the one guy who said something along the lines of "how long does this take," and "I feel like I'm losing my mind" as the match wore on.
In UBMP, you build your own team of heroes from a pre-selected pool of existing characters and set them out on the battlefield to fight against other players. Along the way, you collect upgrades and buffs for your characters to help them win auto-played fights against one another as you watch from above as an Ultron drone.
You can also use your blaster to chip away at enemy players, plus heal your own teammates, and damage the other team once per round, so it's a bit more active then some other auto-battlers. But the fun comes in the strategy of picking a team comp, choosing who and what to buff, and where to place them each round.
![]()
I think you should give the mode a shot. If you need some extra encouragement, there are a couple of rewards to unlock along the way, including a spray and two emojis. But for me, I've just been enjoying playing the mode as a way to get my Marvel Rivals fix without greatly increasing my blood pressure after I solo tank for the ninth game in a row while trying to level up my battle pass.
Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol is an experimental mode, so it may be iterated on in the future. For now, this version will only be available until June 23.

I've always found Undertale and Deltarune charming. Although I've yet to finish my Undertale playthrough, the few hours I played put a smile on my face, which quickly disappeared once I realized how awful I am at bullet hell games. Deltarune is an entirely different beast, though, and it's one I've grown to appreciate.
I'd heard a lot about Deltarune through one of my best friends who, for reasons I didn't understand until recently, frequently raved about its hilarious jokes, playful characters, and fun gameplay mechanics that expanded on Undertale's structure. I've been intrigued about it for a while, and the announcement of Chapters 3 and 4's arrival finally prompted me to try it. When I say this is one of the funniest games I've ever played in my life, I mean it.
![]()
I already thought Deltarune's first two chapters were great. Chapter One serves as your introduction to the main characters, the Dark World, and what types of adventures the team will encounter throughout the next few chapters. The second chapter ramps up its charm and humor, with its final boss, in particular, featuring some amusing, screenshot-worthy moments. Sure, I wasn't quite committed to slapping a perfect score on it at this point, but I was definitely interested in seeing where the story would go from here.
Chapter 3 cranks up the humor to 100. I'll come out and say it—this is by far the funniest one I've encountered so far, no competition. The main character you meet early in the chapter immediately sets the stage (literally) as a wacky, overdramatic jokester with more layers to their personality than an onion. Several recurring jokes appear throughout the chapter, particularly in its first half, which had me pausing to laugh alongside my aforementioned best friend, who found them equally enjoyable.
Chapter 4, on the other hand, dials things down to a more serious tone. Although we start to notice some of Kris, Susie, and Ralsei's struggles early on in the game, these are all expanded upon in Chapter 4. It makes you realize that there's more to Deltarune than endless jokes and that an in-depth story is unfolding before our very eyes. While not every character we meet has complicated lore and history behind them, they all contribute to the story in some way and impact our team's dynamic in each passing conversation.
![]()
I enjoyed Chapters 3 and 4 for very different reasons. Chapter 3 throws wacky shenanigans and peculiar minigames beyond the usual bullet hell combat experience into the mix, while Chapter 4 is noticeably more serious with its tone. Both perfectly contrast one another while still keeping a natural flow to the game's story.
I went into Deltarune feeling indifferent about it. By the end of its second chapter, I found myself interested, albeit not fully passionate. Chapters 3 and 4 have completely transformed me into a delighted fan who craves more. Deltarune is what I wish Undertale to be, offering a fulfilling experience that masterfully combines multiple gaming genres into a nice, goofy title.
I'm looking forward to what future chapters will entail and where the story will branch from here, especially regarding certain major characters introduced in these two chapters.

The world of Mario Kart got flipped on its head in Mario Kart World, now with the ability to grind on rails and ride on walls with your vehicles.
These new gameplay mechanics are far from just a gimmick, though. They give a boost to your speed and are crucial to learn and master if you're looking to beat your friends in races or dominate the addictive Knockout Tour mode online.
Mario Kart may seem like a simple game, and it is and can be at a base level, but using techniques like Charge Jumps, Wall Rides, and Rail Rides is how you go to the next level as a racer and learn to truly dominate your opponents.
Here's everything you need to know about how to grind on rails and ride on walls in Mario Kart World.
How to rail ride and wall ride in Mario Kart World
![]()
To wall ride or grind a rail in Mario Kart World, you first must Charge Jump. This is done by holding down R while driving straight (turning will cause you to drift) and charging up a jump. When the jump is charged (the controller will vibrate and your back wheels will spark), you can hop into the air.
Right as you charge jump, you can tilt the analog stick left or right to flip your kart in that direction to go towards a wall or a rail to initiate the new movement mechanic. Press R again to flip off of the wall or rail and land back on the track for a nice speed boost.
Charge Jumping is a crucial new part of Mario Kart World. Every time you Charge Jump and then land, you get a little speed boost, the same exact kind of boost that you get when successfully drifting around corners.
![]()
Whenever you are on a straightaway, make sure to be Charge Jumping. When you're driving around turns, hold down R to drift for a different but similar kind of speed boost to ensure that you're always moving quickly and staying ahead of the pack in every race.
You can also rail ride by simply landing or driving onto a rail. Some rails begin on the ground, so it's easy to do, while others require you to get some air. This can be done by Charge Jumping or even using the new Feather item, which launches you into the air.

The latest Nintendo console is here. That's normally massive news. Do you want it? Do you need it? Is it worth it? That all depends on a lot of factors.
I've been using the Switch 2 for a couple of days now, trying out new games, testing out old ones, and using the new features of the console like Game Chat, the JoyCon mouse, and more. And I can confidently say that it's an awesome console, but not a must-buy just yet.
A super evolution
![]()
The Switch 2 hardware is a big improvement on the Switch 1, which was already feeling kind of dated when it launched back in 2017. But it really does feel like an upgraded Switch 2 as opposed to a whole new console, and I feel like a new and improved UI would have gone a long way into making this feel different. I still feel like this should've been called the Super Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Super Switch or something.
Thinking about the changes from a PS2 to a PS3 to a PS4, a UI upgrade and change always came with those consoles, making them feel distinct from each other. The Switch 2 has the same UI as the Switch 1, which is nice in some ways, but also makes the console feel like less of an evolutionary jump than it might actually be.
The biggest differences on how much different and new the console feels is definitely felt in handheld mode, with a bigger and better screen, and new JoyCons that are improved in almost every way. The ZL and ZR triggers especially are a massive improvement.
Games look and run better than ever whether in handheld or docked mode, which now supports 4K for the first time in Nintendo's history. This is a big deal for the newest games, such as Mario Kart World which is beautiful to look at no matter how you play it, but also for some older titles that are now suped up.
An investment for the future

As usual, with consoles, it's all about the games. Switch 2 has multiple updated and upgraded versions of existing games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, or Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but it's also able to brute force other older games to run smoother or load faster, such as allowing games like Bayonetta 3 to run at 60 FPS, or lessening massive framerate lag in games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity or Batman: Arkham City.
Mario Kart World, I think, is the one must-have "killer app" for the Switch 2 right now, but others are coming, and they're coming quick. Donkey Kong Bananza comes in July, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is in October, and games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby Air Riders, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment are all due to come sometime in 2025. And then, of course, we have From Software's The Duskbloods in 2026, which will be a must-play. And more and more games are on the way.
These big exclusives are coming on top of other large third-party games that now will play and run better on the new hardware, the Switch 2 will easily become a must-own in the near future, so I can't blame anyone (like myself) who are currently taking the plunge to pick one up at launch.
Chat, chat, they chattin', they chat
![]()
Game Chat is a feature that surprised me when Nintendo showed it off at a special event last week. There's a lot of potential for fun and silliness while playing games or just hanging out with friends and family across the world.
Using a USB-C camera, Game Chat truly creates a "virtual living room," as Nintendo called it. And the camera capabilities don't end there, as I've had a blast playing Mario Kart World with my family while the camera is set up. Playing co-op will allow you to put your faces in the game, hovering above your racers, creating hilarity with each Red Shell.
A party chat with friends is just a quick press of the C button away, and it's more innovative and useful than I ever thought it'd be, especially for those of us who no longer live close by to friends and family.
I think it's especially underrated when it comes to playing co-op games with pals and helping along a friend who may be lost elsewhere in the level, by simply looking at their screen and being able to direct them.
Gamers are in control
![]()
When it comes to controlling how you play, the Switch 2 has even more variety than the Switch 1. Along with the JoyCons in handheld mode, attached to a charging controller, or holding them sideways (and the Switch 2 Pro Controller, which may be one of the cleanest and best controllers I've ever used), you can also use the JoyCons like computer mice.
It's tough to judge how this functionality works without playing an FPS like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, but the ability to seamlessly and instantly swap from normal JoyCon mode to mouse mode is really awesome. I'm excited to try out FPS games in the future with this functionality.
In summary, do you need a Switch 2 right now? Unless you're financially stable enough to afford the hefty pricetag, you're a hardcore Nintendo enthusiast, or you simply must have Mario Kart World, I'd say not really.
But that is changing very quickly once the console's game lineup expands, and it's going to happen rapidly, so if you're on the fence and plan on playing the console for years to come and are trying to justify the purchase, then go for it. Join us. See you in Game Chat.

The Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol event challenges you to strategically build a team for an auto battler face-off in Marvel Rivals. If you want to achieve victory, you need to use the best team comps.
There's a vast roster of heroes to choose from, and none of them play the same as they do outside of the event. It can be tricky to figure out what works and what doesn't, so here are the best team comps you can use for Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol event in Marvel Rivals.

Best teams for Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol in Marvel Rivals
![]()
The best teams for Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol generally vary depending on who you're going up against, but having a strong selection of flexible heroes is always crucial for success. Here are some of the best teams you can use to achieve victory in Ultron's Battle Matrix Protocol.
This mode is unique because you can win with teams that usually might not work well together, like a full roster of six Vanguards or six Duelists. All heroes have access to some abilities they don't have outside of this mode, so although some of these teams wouldn't work well outside of the event, they excel in this special, modified version of the game.
I've had success with all of the teams listed here, but the one I ended up going 25-3 with and winning the entire round was Groot, Peni Parker, Captain America, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Namor, and Rocket Raccoon. I positioned them in a sort of "T" formation with Rocket Raccoon and Namor protected by Vanguards around them. I moved my team around the board here and there, but kept the same formation throughout and dominated almost every match.

If you load into Mario Kart World's freeroam mode and explore the map, chances are you will come across a P Switch or two now and again that tasks you with a mission to unlock an item, usually one of the various Stickers.
The P Switch is easy to find, but also incredibly annoying to find, as once you claim one, it doesn't appear on the map, greyed out for you to share information or appear on the map at all. You can just come across one randomly, try the mission, fail it, move on to another area, and then, when you try to find it again, you completely blank where it was.
To start a P Switch mission, you need to drive into it. The task will then appear briefly, and you'll have a set amount of time to complete the task. If the timer reaches zero, you'll be given an option to reset the quest where you started or drive on and not bother with it for the time being.
![]()
In total, there are over 125 P Switches to find throughout the world. 129 to be specific, though it's possible we might have missed a few here or there. It's hard to tell and keep track, and I might update the article in the future with a static figure once we lock it in.
As for where to locate them, we will need to come back to that eventually. There are so many to find spread out with their each available missions that it'll be hard to have a concrete list of them all this close to launch. They are mainly meant to be found casually anyway, and as the rewards are stickers, we imagine a lot of players won't attempt to find them all and focus on racing instead.
But either way, let us know in the comments below what was the best P Switch you came across—and where it was—so we can go try it out for ourselves.

I've seen quite a few of these "X trailer but in LEGO" videos before, but the latest one has me actually fiending for one just like it.
Grand Theft Auto 6's second trailer is the latest one to get the LEGO treatment by talented creator LegoMe_TheOG, and it's as impressive as it is exciting, because I want this game bad. I know it'll likely never happen since LEGO doesn't seem to touch anything too violent or "illegal," but it would be amazing.
So, if you've played any of the LEGO games before (LEGO Marvel, LEGO Lord of The Rings, LEGO Star Wars, etc.), you play as iconic minifigs that you'd find in a LEGO set, doing your thing as you run around a LEGO world. You pick up items, fight enemies, and build things with LEGO.
Imagine LEGO GTA. Driving around and stealing funny little LEGO cars, shooting LEGO bullets, and using the build function to create things like, I don't know, drugs to sell or explosives to rob a bank. Imagine going to the LEGO strip club! Oh, the possibilities are endless.
LEGO has already proven that it lends itself well to open-world games, such as LEGO City Undercover or LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. It would be an easy transition. Alas, it will never happen, unless LEGO decides to shed its family-friendliness and go full bore into the raunch and debauchery that Rockstar Games is known for.
I think the best part about this new project from LegoMe_TheOG is that another YouTuber used some AI garbage to attempt to recreate the trailer in LEGO, and it was exactly that: garbage. The real OG came out and dropped all their bricks on the table with an actual gem created by hard work and artistry. And this is from a 16-year-old, no less.
I think LegoMe_TheOG's future is bright, but I can't say the same for my hopes for LEGO GTA 6. I will continue to hope and cope that one day we'll get something like it, but for now, this awesome video has to suffice. LEGO lovers everywhere are grateful for this kind of art.

As the video game industry gets more popular (and more profitable) with each passing year, so do Hollywood's insatiable hunger and shadow rapidly expand over it. It appears that every popular IP eventually gets its own film or TV adaptation, and a logical question arises as a result: Are they really necessary?
Whether we like it or not, adaptations of games are on the rise
Just recently, we were notified of two major adaptations of established video game IPs, to be handled by A24 and Blumhouse in the form of the Elden Ring and Phasmophobia films.
The first one is supposedly being made in collaboration with Elden Ring's publisher Bandai Namco, who has been hellbent on making Elden Ring as big of a franchise as it can be from the very moment it was announced.
Phasmophobia hasn't had that much of a franchising drive behind it, nor was it as big as Elden Ring, but it seems that it was big enough to warrant a horror flick from a studio known for churning out countless semi-decent or borderline horrible films in the genre.

And these aren't the only (recent) examples. Until Dawn got adapted into a movie with nearly no one from the original cast in it, nor any semblance of the source game's story. The Last of Us TV show, made by the titan HBO, got its second season and, as a polar opposite to Until Dawn, stuck to its source material too closely and lost over half of its viewership as a result. The former has a 5.8 rating on IMDB, but still seemed to make back its money, which is something at least.
Video game movies have been a fact of life ever since the gaming industry started climbing the ranks of profitable entertainment ventures, attaining a sour reputation in the early years for being too cheap or too bad or oftentimes both.
Then they largely stopped for a while before making a comeback, with some success stories along the way.
Hollywood and other media saw the success of gaming and wanted a piece
Film adaptations of games always appeared to me as one industry's encroachment into the territory of another. Corporate interests trying to cover as much ground as possible and merge two forms of media that don't usually mix very well.
The average cinemagoer isn't necessarily a player, nor can the experiences beloved by gamers be replicated in a medium that is by definition not interactive.
We can also see these constant, unbearably annoying encroachments via events like the Summer Game Fest or The Game Awards, both of which are often hosted and attended by Hollywood stars who don't know anything about gaming.
Creating video game movies, TV shows, and anime series is mere marketing to sell more of [insert product] and never provide actual value to the fanbase.
Because remember: more is always better in the eyes of Hollywood executives, and the more people engaged with a product, the happier they are. It takes the focus away from what made any given gaming IP popular in the first place—the game—which, by the sheer nature of things, can never be the same as any on-screen adaptation.
![]()
So, to answer the question bluntly: no, video game adaptations are not necessary. More games are necessary. More good games, even more so. Franchising can still work and be done without having to go into other media and other audiences.
Even on the rare occasions we do get solid adaptations, like say the Fallout TV show or Cyberpunk Edgerunners, it's usually something so far removed from the originals that it sort of becomes its own thing, wearing an "I was a video game once!" badge.
The same can be said of vice-versa endeavors, but while screen adaptations of games take away from the experience, adapting a flick (such as the Indiana Jones movies) into a game can do wonders and add more depth, interactivity, and connection to the world.
Even so, let movies be movies, and let games be games. Target audiences exist and need to make a return as a concept, since not everything has to be for everyone and cover every medium in existence.
What do you think, dear readers? Should adaptations continue to be made, and are they really a necessary thing given how big gaming already is? Let us know below.

It's been a few days now since Mario Kart World's launch, so it should have been more than enough time to declare some loyalties for the new batch of characters and pick out which is your favorite, right?
Now I can already see where this is probably going to go. I'm expecting the Cow army to stampede in from Moo Moo Meadows and completely dominate the poll, which is why I have decided to allow multiple choice this time around so we can get an idea of at least who will come in second place.
There are over 24 new characters to find and unlock, with most of the new ones being tied to the new Kamek in-game item, which turns you into a random NPC when used. If used in the correct place, you can unlock the character to use permanently later down the line as well.
For me, it's great to see Hammer Bros. as a playable character finally, and it feels like this one was a long time coming. Spike, I know, is a fan-favorite character people have wanted to play for ages in Mario Kart as well, so I'm sure he will get a lot of love either in the poll or the comments below. Loads of my friends have been hyped to try and unlock him as quickly as possible.
Nabbit also strangely makes its Mario Kart debut and has been one of the standout new Mario characters to get a lot of love, even being a playable character in Super Mario Wonder recently.
I am super curious, though, to hear some of your favorites, so if you clicked on the poll to vote above, be sure to leave a comment down below to explain some of your picks, especially if it's some of the weirder characters like Fish Bone, Snowman, etc. What made them stand out to you?
