ASRock has just released a new GPU power cable that the company says is protected from overheating, thanks to the use of thermal sensors inside it. The launch follows numerous reports about melted graphics cards, particularly Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 and 5090 models, which draw a large amount of power over the cable. There's a catch, though, which is that you need to use it with an ASRock power supply in order to use the thermal sensors.

While it's undoubtedly the fastest gaming GPU in our guide to buying the best graphics card, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 also has a total graphics power rating of 575W, and in some cases, the cables attached to it have overheated, resulting in melted power plugs and sockets. The cable has been shown to get extremely hot in some tests as well, with renowned overclocker Roman 'der8auer' Hartung even showing an RTX 5090 cable temperature hitting 153°C at the PSU end. This new ASRock cable is designed to prevent overheating, though.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is about to welcome its second story expansion, Legacy of the Forge. Larger in size and scope than the first DLC, Brushes with Death, it sees Henry attempt to rebuild his father's old forge, become the elite blacksmith Kuttenberg needs, and sink his profits into a heavily customizable residence. At Gamescom in Germany, I was able to get a sneak peak at Legacy of the Forge before its release in a couple of weeks' time, but I also managed to learn some interesting details about DLC 3, Mysteria Ecclesiae, which Warhorse reaffirms will be its final expansion for KCD2 before moving on to new, immersive RPG projects.

Some games are synonymous with certain consoles (or computers). Halo is an Xbox game through and through. Crash Bandicoot and Ellie from The Last of Us? PlayStation mascots each. Gordon Freeman is synonymous with PC gaming. You think Pikachu and a Nintendo console comes to mind. You get the picture. In recent years, however, those lines have blurred. You can now play Forza on PlayStation, Spyro on Xbox, and myriad formerly console exclusive titles on PC. The latest to make the switch to desktop is Gears of War Reloaded, which is the first game of the iconic Xbox series to be available on Steam.

It's the feel of Gears of War that matters. Marcus Fenix controls like a bipedal tank with weak brakes. He lumbers through battlefields, the screen wobbling drunkenly when he breaks into a sprint, and slams into waist-high barriers when it's time to take cover. Grounded 2 update 0.1.3 is out now, and we've taken it for a spin. Listed under the major bug fixes is the promise of "significant improvements to game stability" alongside the mention of a "30% performance gain" compared to the previous patch. Our fresh testing suggests this number is somewhat overestimated, but it will differ depending on the specs of your gaming PC.

When we first tested the best Grounded 2 settings, we found that we couldn't push the game beyond the medium graphics preset without risking performance issues. Following patch 0.1.3, Grounded 2 does run better on our RTX 4070 testing rig, but we're not seeing the full estimated 30% improvement.

What are the best WoW addons? Blizzard's critically acclaimed MMORPG hides a lot of useful data it collects, and picking up a mod that offers a peek behind the curtain can be a literal game-changer when going up against deadly bosses. Of course, the best World of Warcraft addons aren't just aimed at avid raiders. Some are more focused on utility and freshening up MMO's geriatric UI, while others help track material nodes for those all-important professions.

With so many options, it's tough to know which WoW addons are worth your time, especially following the WoW The War Within. We've dug deep and tracked down the best of the bunch for general, all-purpose use in one of the best PC games of all time. Each addon will make your World of Warcraft experience far more pleasant, whether you're a raider, tradesman, or simply keen to level up fast.

Being a multiplayer game in 2025 is hard. We've seen the rise and abrupt fall of games like Concord and XDefiant, and while Marvel Rivals blasted onto the scene in style, a game that once pulled in almost 650,000 players on Steam alone now sits at just over 101,500 - nothing to smirk at, sure, but a marked drop nonetheless. Despite being the OG hero shooter, Overwatch 2 hasn't been immune to this struggle, with its Steam rating still sitting at a particularly harrowing 'mostly negative' 25%. But that's juxtaposed with Stadium's success, which many argue ushered in Overwatch 2's best era yet. How, then, does the team reconcile with the fact that its newest content is beloved by its community, but the game's Steam reputation is still in the proverbial toilet? I asked game director Aaron Keller at Gamescom 2025.

A new AMD Ryzen CPU is reportedly in the works that contains an incredibly powerful GPU, with specs that could enable it to beat the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070, while also giving it access to huge amounts of VRAM. The new Medusa Halo chip reportedly tops a new line of Medusa-codenamed products coming in 2026 and 2027 that see AMD completely overhauling its integrated GPU tech, with some really interesting ideas.

If this latest rumor is true, then we could see some of the machines on our best gaming laptop guide running games purely on AMD integrated GPUs at surprisingly high settings, and we could also see incredibly powerful handhelds and gaming tablets too. As we saw in our Asus ROG Flow Z13 review, there's enormous potential for a powerful integrated GPU in a portable gaming device, and Medusa Halo could make a big impact here.

What is the best VR headset? That depends on what you're hoping to do with your headset, whether it's mostly watch video, play tethered to your PC or play free-roaming games while stood up. Whatever your preference, we've got a recommendation for you. Virtual reality is still a growing technology but it's at a point where there are some fantastic games just waiting to be experienced through the right headset.

After many hours of gaming, our top choice overall is the Meta Quest 3, as it combines decent visuals and a great standalone experience with a reasonable price. If you're not keen on a Facebook-affiliated headset, the Pico 4 is also a great standalone choice, while the Meta Quest 3S is the best budget choice. In a sad turn for this guide we've finally decided it's time to not recommend the Valve Index as the best Steam VR headset, which is a title that headset held for many years. For more options we do still recommend, check out the full list below. Making a strong first impression is imperative for any incoming monarch. Ensuring the support of your people from the second the crown caresses your brow is crucial not only to the survival of your kingdom, but, as a bloodied history of assassinations and executions illustrates, also to your longevity. In short, be more Louis XIV than Louis XVI. Until Crusader Kings 3 announced its Coronations DLC, this element of statecraft was largely overlooked. Now, it's almost time to add a little pomp, panache, and politicking to the mix as Paradox confirms when you'll be able to ascend the throne.

Who are the best Dead By Daylight killers? Eight years in, the Dead by Daylight character roster is bigger than ever, boasting a massive 39 killers and 47 survivors at the time of writing. Thanks to that huge list of names, and constant changes to perks and add-ons, it's certainly difficult to keep track of who you should main.

Among the best PC games out there, the joy of asymmetrical horror games has always been the ability to be the bad guy. While there's certainly something thrilling fighting for your life in survival games (there must be a reason we all wonder how we'd do in a zombie apocalypse, right?), nothing gets the heart racing like shirking the lawful-good responsibilities of real life and taking on the role of a blood-thirsty killer. Metal Gear Solid 3 is an all-timer - you could pick up the original version, play it today, and still be impressed with its stealth, level design, and eccentric storytelling. But I have to say, seeing all of it repackaged inside a stunning ground-up remake like Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater makes it sing even louder. The recreation of the main game is remarkably faithful, but there is one area where Konami has allowed for some creative freedom. One of MGS 3's most famous easter eggs, Snake's Nightmare, appears in MGS Delta, but not as you remember it. Oh, and it seems Konami enlisted some unexpected help to bring this secret back to life.

What used to be a joke of a weapon, something you'd pick up to hold all your R99 attachments until you find an SMG, has been transformed thanks to a huge buff this season. It switched to using energy ammo, and now fires in a burst pattern similar to the Nemesis assault rifle, which speeds up the more consecutive bursts you fire. Prior to getting a big, fat, four-hour demo with it at Gamescom, I was worried that banging on about Silent Hill f's newfound enthusiasm for monster fighting – with all its parries, zippy dodges, and slow-mo focus meters – would be doing a disservice to its bolder, more 'interesting' series departures, like the new 1960s setting or its deep embrace of homegrown Japanese culture and myths. A certain missing of the point, like setting out for a lovely drive through the Scottish highlands then stopping to gawp at a lightly crashed Peugeot on the hard shoulder.

But no. Combat is as deeply ingrained within Silent Hill f as guilty moping was to Silent Hill 2, and from what I've played, doesn't work nearly as well.

That's going to cause problems if, for example, your entire military strategy depends on being able to call in air support whenever you choose. The same geographers also allege that caves are dark. Well, it happened again: the Maw devoured a Monday. My recent, highly suspicious news article about a sudden "bank holiday" was, of course, a hasty PR smokescreen to avert a stock market crash. In Horace's name, we have now forced the Maw to sick up the missing Monday, but locating the gag reflex of a cosmic monster has its risks, and there have been a few casualties.

Mark has theoretically been "on holiday" since last Wednesday, returning tomorrow, but that's another piece of disinfo - he's actually stranded somewhere in the Cretaceous period. James, meanwhile, has come down with a case of the Schrödingers, neither away at Gamescom nor back at his desk. I am going to email him shortly - fingers crossed the quantum binary collapses in a way conducive to preview write-ups. As for this week's new PC games - here you are. I've included the regurgitated Monday, but please handle with care as it's still rather radioactive and, er, talkative.

Kirby Hankyu Train in Japan Hanshin area

Nintendo revealed that it is working with Hankyu to launch the Kirby-decorated train and bus that run around Japan's Hanshin area, which generally covers areas between the cities of Osaka and Kobe. The companies also plan to gradually add more collaboration merchandise, but the whole campaign will conclude in mid-March 2026.

The decorated trains and buses are the first ones to launch. The trains primarily cover the Kobe-Sannomiya, Takarazuka, Osaka-Umeda, and Kyoto-Kawaramachi stations, and Hankyu has also provided a weekly schedule for the trains' departure times on its English website. At the same time, there are two Kirby Hankyu buses operating in the cities of Suita and Kawanishi.

Nintendo and Hankyu will then start selling merchandise themed after the collaboration in September 2025. Cafes and vending machines in Hankyu's stations will sell Kirby-branded cakes and drinks from September 2 until November 24, 2025. The companies will also release goods ranging from keychains to plushies on September 10, 2025. In addition, Bandai will join the festivities by releasing a new special edition of the Kirby Pupupu Train Gashapon with different colors.

The Kirby Hankyu Train and Bus will remain available around cities in Japan's Hanshin area until Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Wooloo Pokemon Plush Debuts at Build-a-Bear

Build-a-Bear announced its next Pokemon plush will be a stuffed animal of Wooloo. That's the character that looks like a bit like a Suffolk Sheep and debuted in Pokemon Sword and Shield. It is an online-exclusive and costs $60 for the bundle.

The Wooloo is fairly typical when compared to other plush in this line. It is 11 inches tall. Typically, the four-legged varieties end up being just about a foot or so tall. It features a fleece-like material for its wool, to make the Pokemon character look even more like a sheep. It's extra outfit accessories in the bundle include a pair of bows for the wool on either side of its face and a headband that looks like it is made of three sunflowers. It will also arrive with a five-in-one sound chip inside of it that plays four cries from the series.

Here's a full promotional photo showing the Wooloo plush wearing its accessories from the Build-a-Bear site.

We've seen a few Pokemon at Build-a-Bear over the last few months. A Wooper appeared in March 2025. There will also be a giant Gengar in September 2025 that will be over two feet tall and cost $149.

The Wooloo Pokemon plush will be the next Build-a-Bear online-exclusive stuffed animal on August 26, 2025.

Review: Herdling Feels Magical

Urban fantasy is my jam. I'm not kidding. Part of my major in college included focusing on folklore, fairytales, and how we see those sorts of stories adapted in more contemporary literature. We don't frequently see these kinds of stories in games, titles like Concrete Genie aside. Herdling is one of them, though! Not only that, but it blends urban fantasy with cozy elements like light socialization with unusual animals in a stunning and sometimes even soothing way.

We're an individual living under a bridge in a town that seems to have some issues. Nothing is clearly explained, but it strikes me as a place that underwent some sort of unpleasant, life-changing event. People are clearly still living there, but I got the distinct impression that something isn't right. After hearing a sound outside, our avatar happens upon a Calicorn with a box stuck on their head. It's unlike any type of animal we're familiar with, but can be tamed. Seeming to instinctively know more than me, the person playing, our character picks up a stick and begins guiding it, and eventually even more Calicorns, through the city and other environments on a journey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsMwLaJmMVY

Herdling is a straightforward adventure game where actions matter, not words. After assisting that first Calicorn, we pick up some others that found their way into the city and head for the wider spaces of the wild. Going past the outskirts of civilization, like a still-functioning farm and a train track that still seems engines with cars going by, we head to some unknown place. Where? I don't know, but I'll keep walking and see.

This involves some light puzzles. There will be times when you'll need to figure out how to get a new Calicorn to join your herd, as an example. Maybe there'll be a closed door to a space you know they'll need to get through to progress. Dashing might be necessary to evade other entities or to more quickly get through spaces, and you'll need to time heading through certain flowers to build up that type of energy for those swift moves. None of this ever felt too trying, but rather were more of a satisfying challenge that made it really feel like I was guiding a group.

Speaking of which, getting around in Herdling works perfectly. That's great, since I was a bit worried. Pressing a button while faced in a direction will basically "tell" the Calicorns to go there. Holding that down makes it a bit more insistent. If you direct them to stop with a double-tap, there's really no hesitation too. Now, there are some of these creatures that will have defined "personalities." This will be noted on the page going over your current herd. But even then, they seem to listen at the more critical moments. Even my "rascal" character kept in line.

It's a nice touch, as are efforts to make it feel like you are caring for them and not just constantly directing Calicorns to different spots. When I paused for a moment, I could pet the creatures. If we went through a lot of leaves, I could groom them a bit to clean them off. (This will show as an automatic option and doesn't involve any specific equipment.) There are little interactions that makes it feel like I do sort of "matter" to them and they aren't lifeless entities I'm forcing down small roads or through winding areas. The moments when they'll also help push through blockades or work with my avatar to scale inclines are also fun to watch, since it does offer the impression we're working "together."

Now, my early experience with Herdling didn't end up being 100% perfect. I ended up encountering an odd issue with the camera at times on the Switch. When I'd be guiding the Calicorns, there would sometimes be moments that, depending on my avatar's positions and movements and the design of the world around me, the position of the camera would slip. By which I mean it would clip through the ground in a way that would make it difficult to even sometimes see the Calicorns or myself and where we all were supposed to go. (I included some screenshots below of it happening in a non-spoiler, early area as an example.) While sometimes it would right itself if I made my character walk forward a bit after directing the creatures to stay put so they wouldn't get into an awkward spot or dangerous situation, there were some times when actually exiting and restarted proved the best solution.

I also will say that if you prioritize appearances, the Switch version of Herdling might not be the way to go. This is a gorgeous game, and I love the way the environments look. The character designs for both our avatar, the Calicorns, and other creatures we encounter are fantastic. However, based on screenshots for other platforms I've seen and the footage on this, it doesn't seem as sharp. (Even on the Switch 2, the extra power didn't seem to help much.) However, it does run well on the system and I absolutely enjoyed playing it in Handheld mode while all cozy on a couch.

Almost every concern I had about Herdling vanished after about 15 minutes with this enchanting adventure. While I did experience a few technical hiccups on the Switch, these proved to be minor. The experience of guiding these otherworldly entities while appreciating both them and the world around us is magical, even when moments get harrowing. Since I'm fairly confident patches will fix any issues come launch or just after, I can't think of any reason not to immediately start settling down with Calicorns. Herdling is a magical game about some really unique creatures, and I loved guiding them.

Herdling will come to the Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on August 21, 2025

The Pokémon Company published a teaser today about the "mega matchup of the millennium" featuring Machamp versus Hawlucha. The #PokemonLegendsZA hashtag in the Instagram post indicates that a video will premiere on YouTube on Aug. 28 at 8am CT to reveal how it's connected to the upcoming game.

Hawlucha being featured in this post with "mega" in the description is no surprise to Pokémon fans who love a good leak. It is among the 25 Pokémon that a 4chan leaker reported would get a Mega evolution in Legends: Z-A when it releases on Oct. 16 on the Switch and Switch 2. This teaser revealing Hawlucha fighting Machamp in an upcoming video tied to the game is making a lot of players, including me, believe that the star of the Aug. 28 video will be Mega Hawlucha.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DN0bOyK2GAg/?igsh=MXhlang0ZXVsbXVleQ==

"Mega Hawlucha, please be goated," an excited fan wrote in the IG post's comments. "The official tweet refers to it as a 'mega matchup.' Very subtle," another player wrote on Reddit. "Either Machamp is winning and Hawlucha mega evolves to turn the tables, or the fight is even and they both mega evolve," another fan wrote, trying to predict the video script.

The possibility of a Mega Machamp made a second group of Pokémon fans really excited, even though the Pokémon isn't in any leaks released so far. You can choose your side: either Mega Machamp is coming, but nobody was able to leak it, or it will just be part of the plot for Hawlucha to Mega evolve. I'm more convinced of the second scenario.

Mega Victreebel and Mega Dragonite are the two other Mega evolutions confirmed for Pokémon Legends: Z-A so far. While Dragonite's transformation was revealed in a gameplay trailer, Victreebel got its own short animation that made me wish for a Pokémon horror game.

Aug. 28 should reveal if Mega Hawlucha is coming and if it looks like a fan's drawing.

A massive explosion raining down from the sky in Fortnite

The loot pool present in each Fortnite season is massive, which means there are lots of rare weapons you might have a tough time finding. One of the most difficult tools to find is the Precision Air Strike, and it's a deadly weapon of mass destruction worth acquiring.

The Precision Air Strike is one of the most effective weapons you can find around the island, and when you use it, you're guaranteed to deal a ton of damage. If you're eager to try this item out or need it to tackle some important quests, here's how to get and use the Precision Air Strike in Fortnite.

Where to find Precision Air Strike in Fortnite

Screenshot by Destructoid

Precision Air Strikes can be found in OXR Bunkers or obtained from OXR Drop Pods. It's not an item you'll come across while looting casually, so to find one, you need to focus on one of these two options.

How to get Precision Air Strike in Fortnite

To get a Precision Air Strike, you must increase your OXR Rank. This weapon only drops from Drop Pods at Rank A or higher, and you can also only enter OXR bunkers once you've reached the same rank, so leveling up is crucial if you want to use this powerful weapon.

Once you reach Rank A, a Drop Pod that may contain this item will be sent down from the sky to your location. Open it up to grab some goodies, including a Boon, ammo, weapons, and possibly a Precision Air Strike.

Also after reaching Rank A, a nearby OXR Bunker will be marked for you. Head to the location and interact with the door to gain entry. Search around the bunker for a golden case to see if there's a Precision Air Strike present for you to grab. Upon approaching the case, it will look like you have to buy it, but it's always free, so just interact with the container to unlock it.

How to use Precision Air Strike in Fortnite

To use the Precision Air Strike, point this weapon at the area you want to call in the attack, then select the attack button to activate it. This button varies by platform, but is always displayed in the bottom left corner, right above your health and shield bars, to help you use it.

Upon activating a strike, a few ships will fly in above. Red lasers will surround the targeted area, letting you know how much ground will be covered in the attack. Make sure you're standing outside the lasers to remain safe. After a few seconds, the ships will drop their first explosive attack. Two more will follow, slightly paced out, raining down devastating damage to all enemies and structures within the area.

The Precision Air Strike only has one charge, so you need to use it wisely. As soon as you call in the attack, this item is immediately removed from your inventory, so the only way to call in more is to find one again.

Destroy objects using the Precision Air Strike in Fortnite

This guide is a work in progress and is receiving live updates as we test out this item.

Hoodie Melo in NBA 2K26

Season 1 marks the beginning of your NBA 2K26 journey, especially if you're into the online side of things like MyTeam and MyCareer.

Once again, the online content will be based around seasons released routinely by NBA 2K. If you're a veteran, you'll know what to expect. Season Passes will be available every season, offering rewards for hitting different milestones.

But first, let's look at when the new season goes live.

NBA 2K26 Season 1 countdown

Unless there are any radical changes in plans from NBA 2K, the new season will go live with the global launch, which is on Aug. 29. To take part early, you'll need to pre-order either the Superstar Edition or the Leave No Doubt Edition.

The countdown below will help you stay up to date with when the season goes live. As of writing (Aug. 26), 2K hasn't explicitly announced when the season goes live, and we assume it will be with the start of the early access.

[hurrytimer id="1088924"]

We will update our guide if there's any change to the season launch times.

NBA 2K26 Season 1 pass rewards

As of this writing, we have no hints about what will be available during the season pass. The season pass is expected to have 80 different rewards spread across 40 milestones. You can unlock 40 additional rewards by opting for a premium upgrade.

wow mightnight key art

WoW's next expansion, Midnight, is still a ways away, but thanks to the team over at Blizzard, we had a chance to dive deep into the Housing update and find out about all sorts of other interesting aspects of the game.

At Gamescom, we got a chance to sit down and talk to two faces working on WoW's next significant expansion, Maria Hamilton (Associate Design Director) & Gabriel Gonzalez (Lead Visual Development Artist), and we had a lot to talk about.

Note: Parts have been edited to allow for better text clarity and to avoid everyday speech repetitions. Some audio was also lost during recording, sadly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22Nf00VN0WM&ab_channel=WorldofWarcraft

So, the first thing I and they wanted to ask is, could you talk a bit more about the Endeavor system that is coming in here? Specifically, what players can expect from it, and what were the team's main goals in creating it?

Maria Hamilton (Associate Design Director): So the Endeavor system is an opportunity for a neighborhood to come together and achieve a goal, and what you need to do for that endeavor is quite varied, depending on which one it is. Some things can be accomplished within housing, within the neighborhood itself, because there are people who we expect won't necessarily want to go out and adventure. They might just want to hang out in their house, and that might be a really fun thing as far as they're concerned. And we want to support that. Other people will have tasks to do out in an older zone, and in exploring that older zone, the neighborhood is slowly accomplishing the endeavor, and then when they complete the endeavor, they get the prize, the rewards for that.

On that, can you talk about what rewards players can expect?

Maria Hamilton: Well, I think there's a concept of unlocking visitors who can come and see you. And they might have interesting things to sell, for example, or they might have interesting little activities for you to do. So there's that kind of sort of reward. There may very well also be decor items that you've unlocked in your neighborhood. Anyone in your neighborhood can now get that decor item, for example. I don't have an exhaustive list, honestly, but the idea is that people can work together to achieve this, and we're going to appropriately adjust and scale based on the size of the neighborhood, because some neighborhoods would be very large [or] very tiny. So we don't want to give them the same sort of requirement. We don't want you grinding it.

War Within fans want to know if Black Blood, Beledar, and all these things that appeared in War Within will actually make an appearance in Midnight, and how might they play into the story?

Maria Hamilton: Thinking about the Black Blood in Midnight... It's not something that you are likely to fight against or see... With the idea of a trilogy, we have the opportunity to introduce elements and try to pace things out. And these elements could be true later or not. We can introduce characters in the same way. So, we've learned some essential things. We've seen Beledar and are beginning to understand what happened there...Oh, my goodness, this is the number of Gods. Blood seeped into our planet when they were killed. That's probably not great.

So this is all very pertinent. And as we move in and we start looking at what [they do]... but directly fighting with Black Blood? Probably not, at least in launch. That's probably not, because we need to introduce more stuff. We're doing the let's introduce things and bring threads together. And we have that luxury this time.

Gabriel Gonzalez (Lead Visual Development Artist): I will say in terms of the Black Blood and sort of visual storytelling there, it was very much coded to Old Gods and a lot of the residual stories, right? But for Midnight, we're gonna see more of the cosmic void sort of energy, which visually, has a really distinct language. There are visual themes of crystals. It's a lot more light, it's a lot airy. It's not quite as thick and liquid-feeling as some of the wolf gas stuff that we've seen in the past. And I think that is something that we're gonna see. The cosmic aspect of it is something that we're gonna see more in the void lands. It's more central.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijN4EW6meRk

Moving on from the Black Blood and looking more at the Housing and Endeavour system you are bringing in, I was wondering how the team plans to avoid the criticism that Garrisons created the previous expansions, as it seemed to incentivize solo play.

Gabriel Gonzalez: I would say they really have two different goals right now, looking at Garrisons. Housing is not really something that is tied to the campaign necessarily, as much as Garrison was, but there was, like, that sense of progression that was really personal. With Housing, we're really just focusing on the act of creating, customizing, and creating community in that sense. So, I would say that was the focus from the outset: finding ways to encourage folks to collaborate, create those communities, and work together.

Maria Hamilton: It's our hope that you will choose who to live in a neighborhood with, friends or guild members. But if you want to do a sort of public one, where you don't necessarily have anyone in the neighborhood that's available to you, too. We didn't; we'd want to constrain players in that way. But I would guess that people would want to do this based on real-life friends. They'll want to have a neighborhood and hang out together, so we incentivize socializing by allowing you to unlock things, progress through endeavours, and make it possible to do things together in that way.

I'm not opposed to a solo experience, though. If that's something you want to do, great, as long as you're having fun. We want anyone with any play style to have a good time. But at the same time, we also want to provide social opportunities. I think neighborhoods are an area to lean into. As soon as we can get players playing it pre-launch and gather some feedback, I think we'll be able to plan for additional adjustments. As I mentioned, it's an evergreen system. It's going to continue to go from there.

While we might have answers as to what people will like, those are just moments, and people sometimes surprise you. So yeah, I think social activities inside our neighborhood make a lot of sense. Being able to visit your friend's house... Otherwise, [Garrisons] wasn't all the same, because it wasn't focused on expression. It was focused on convenience. What's the convenience of buildings to build for you? Oh, I'm in the alchemist, I'm in the alchemy building, right? So, it's not the same as here is a section of my house, which I have decided to turn into a total spider theme, right? I'm gonna do all spider stuff, and then I'm gonna show my friends my cool spider stuff. It's a different thing we're going for here.

So I don't know if you've told me the answer to this, but what happens if, say, I want to move to a new neighborhood with a friend who just started? Does my endeavor like basically reset to that neighborhood? Or do I keep my endeavor?

Maria Hamilton: Yeah, I suspect what happens is you've unlocked a thing. I don't think we would take that away from you if you change neighborhoods. That seems unlikely, but your neighborhood might not have unlocked that feature. Perhaps the Endeavor hasn't been completed in that neighborhood, so you could help them unlock it.

If there was something like that, it was unlocked. I think people choosing to leave neighborhoods or deciding to move neighborhoods is something that the team is working directly on. Housing has thought about a lot, just the ease of packing your stuff up and then unpacking your stuff on the other end, for example, we want that to be easy, we don't want you to have to replace all the things again, in that you'll be able to say, yeah, just get me here.

But a lot of the details around exactly how things work in the housing team are being worked on. We have some devs who are familiar with the details, and I think either Dave or someone higher up has provided education on the specifics.

So, going back to the narrative behind Midnight, and also in general, with this trilogy you are doing right now. I'm curious if in Midnight, we will discover how players will start to unite the scattered elf tribes?

Maria Hamilton: This is a really hard battle, and there are many, many years of trauma between the Elvein tribes, and it's not the kind of thing that is easily solved. So you know the common threat is severe, and it means that those groups need to talk again. So through questing, you will definitely experience pulling those tribes together and working together and fighting together against the large threat, and some discussion about why they were separated, why they walked away from each other in the first place. A lot of players don't know that lore and don't know what happened. They don't understand why the Blood Elves were banished, for example... This is an opportunity to educate those folks about that part of the story, but also reveal them coming together, and when we think about Midnight, or any of the expansions of the saga, we're thinking about it all the way through to our final large content release. So things are spaced out over that period of time, and things will happen in those later content releases over the span of the entire expansion. But I can't say that in Midnight proper you will begin that effort to bring the tribes back together.

Poison Ivy standing on a Hammerhead Choppa in Fortnite

The Fortnite island is massive, so traveling around to key locations can take quite a while if you're walking. Luckily, there are several traversal items you can find around the world to make your travels quicker, including the Hammerhead Choppa.

Since this special vehicle wasn't around at the start of Chapter Six, season four, there's a decent chance you don't know where to find one. Luckily, there are quite a few you can hop in around the island, so here are all Hammerhead Choppa locations in Fortnite.

Where to find Hammerhead Choppa in Fortnite

Poison Ivy standing on a Hammerhead Choppa in Fortnite

Hammerhead Choppas can be found at OXR locations around the map, including POIS like OXR HQ and smaller Landmark areas like Infested Outposts. Look for landing pads around these areas to see if there's a Hammerhead Choppa you can catch a ride in on them.

These ships aren't as common as other traversal items you can find around the island, like cars and Roly Polys. To ensure you manage to get one, it's best to head to an OXR location straight out of the battle bus. All Infested Outposts are marked as soon as the bus starts traveling, so mark one of these spots or a main OXR location like HQ as soon as it starts flying.

Hammerhead Choppa map locations in Fortnite

At the time of writing, we've found four possible spawn locations for the Hammerhead Choppa. There may be additional spots they can appear beyond this, so we'll continue searching for them and add any other ones we find here in the future. For now, though, here's where you can find them.

  • At an Infested Outpost directly north of The Hive and west of Supernova Academy.
  • At OXR HQ, slightly east of Swarmy Stash and south of Supernova Academy.
  • At an Infested Outpost slightly north of Canyon Crossing and south of Ranger's Ruin.

Hammerhead Choppa locations in Fortnite
Screenshot by Destructoid

Based on our testing, Hammerhead Choppa's seem to have a 100 percent spawn rate at these locations, so you should be guaranteed to find one at each spot as long as you're the first one there. We'll keep testing to ensure they do actually spawn every match, though, in case the rate is lower than what we've experienced so far.

There are plenty of quests you can tackle around the island now that you have an easy way to get around quickly. Some good ones to work on are all Welcome to the Infestation quests, claiming Capture Points, tackling Shadow Briefings, and discovering the swarm's access point to the island.

Updated on August 26, 2025: Added all new Black Clover units from the 2.0 Update and adjusted the ratings.

The best units in Anime Final Strike depend on which role you're looking to fill. You need to have ground, hill, and air DPSs as well as supporting and farm units. That's why I'll structure this tier list according to those three categories as well as showing you the best starter units. Here's my Anime Final Strike tier list and guide.

Anime Final Strike Unit Tier List

anime final strike tier list

Here are the best units in Anime Final Strike for progression and Raids/Infinite including base versions and Evolutions. Note that units are also ranked within their categories left to right. You'll also find more info, tips and explanations for best units below. I won't talk much about Yuneko+Evo and Namu since they're the only farm units and you should always include one in any team. Also note that I'm assuming you're rolling the best stats you can with Perfect Stat Engrams. I'll show you how to farm them along with Gems and Traits below the tier list.

DPS Highlights

This list includes the best DPS units in Anime Final Strike that you should always go for. Vejita, Roku, Arrow and Ichiru Masked are great beginner options to go for since they're great starters and later have amazing Evolutions for end-game. Also, keep in mind the Hybrid & Air DPS units which are:

  • Akoza & Evolution starting at Upgrade 5
  • Vejita & Evolution
  • Sasoke & Evolution
  • Naroto & Evolution starting at Upgrade 3
  • Vesh Evolution
  • Vasto Lorde
  • Enorai
  • Sogo King
  • Naroto's 2nd Evo
  • Fire Hashira
  • Minato at Upgrade 6
  • Kaziru
  • Roku Black
  • Roku

Unit Notes & Best Trait

Vasto Lorde
Secret
• The best Dark Elemental damage in the game and overall one of the best DPS units
• Unlike Vesh who is a Secret base and Evolution you can get Vasto Lorde from the Ichiru Mythic
• The best unit in the game to get the Emperor Trait on for a single powerful placement.
• Massive AOE damage that shreds Infinite

Best Trait: Emperor

Vesh
Secret
• Best Light damage in the game and the second most powerful DPS overall due to flexibility
• Can be both Physical and Magical
• Also great with Emperor or The One trait
• Either Vesh or Vasto Lorde are a must-have for Raids/Infinite

Best Trait: Emperor or The One

Benomaru & Evo
Secret
• While the base Secret is good the Crimson Commander Evo is currently a Meta DPS and one of the best damage units in Anime Final Strike
• Emperor is a must-have but Frenzy is also good if you're already using Emperor on Vasto Lorde or Vesh
• Top-tier for Infinite

Best Trait: Emperor or Frenzy

Jolis Evo
Mythic
• Currently a Meta unit both for progression due to massive AOE damage and the ability is OP
• Not only that but the Jolis Evo is arguably the strongest unit for Infinite
• A must-have on any team

Best Trait: Emperor/The One

Leona Evo
Mythic
• Same as Jolis in terms of progression, massive DPS
• Not a must-have for Infinite but Leona is certainly one of the best units for it since she has reliable sustained DPS

Best Trait: The One/Emperor

Super Roku Evo
Mythic
• The base Roku is already a great starter but Super Roku EVO is in my personal opinion a meta DPS up there in the ranks of Secrets
• If you don't have secrets yet then just slap Emperor on this one and it'll carry you in all modes
• Really good for Infinite

Best Trait: Emperor or Frenzy

Black Roku Evo
Mythic
• Both the base Legendary Black Roku and the Black Roku Rose evo are great units for two different things
• The base Black Roku is an amazing starter unit
• The Rose Evo version is in my opinion a meta DPS similar to Super Roku Evo
• I wouldn't necessarily use Emperor as a trait here since there are better options but The One is pretty good

Best Trait: The One or Frenzy

Vejita & His Evolutions
Mythic
• The best Burst/Nova damage Mythic
• The base version of Vejita is great for beginners and overall a strong starter
• Then the Evolutions also carry you into the late game and Raids/Infinite
• Vejita Magin is stronger than Vejita Super Ascended but takes grinding
• Hybrid/Air DPS

Best Trait: The One

Arrow & Evo
Mythic
• Arrow is my favorite Fire Force Mythic due to how great of a starter the base version is
• Also, it can deal some great damage so overall the Fire Force Mythics are all really good

Best Trait: Berserk

Arthor & Shinra
Mythics
• While lower on the S-Tier line both Arthor and Shinra are excellent sustained DPS units for all modes
• I prefer Arrow due to the starter potential but once you Evo these they can do some great damage-per-second

Best Trait: Both work really well with Frenzy

Asto Evo
Mythic
• This is an A-Tier for progression
• B-Tier for Infinite

Best Trait: Berserk

Noile Evo
Mythic
• Noile is actually incredibly good for Infinite due to her ability
• I'd say she's up there with Vasto Lorde and Ben as well as Leone but not as good as Jolis
• For Progression she's kind of like Asto and not a must-have

Best Trait: Berserk

Dark Captain Evo
Mythic
• If we're talking straight DPS the Dark Captain Evo is IMO the weakest Mythic because he doesn't bring any utility unlike Jolis or Noile
• He's still pretty strong overall for a Mythic
• That said I'd say he's sup-par for Infinite like Asto

Best Trait: Berserk

Minato Evolution
Mythic
• You can get the base Minato via Tailed Beast Capsules from the Event and then evolve him with Kunais into the Yellow Flash
• He's an incredible sustained DPS unit and one of the best Mythic ones
• Meta DPS unit and in my opinion one of the must-haves for Raids and Infinite farming

Best Trait: The One

Fire Hashira Evolution
Mythic
• An alternative to Vejita in terms of Burst/Nova damage
• One of the best Fire DPS units

Best Trait: The One

Sasoke Hebi Evolution
Mythic
• Hybrid/Air DPS
• Great secondary DPS options to the ones above
• Can compete sustained DPS wise with Secrets and most Mythics
• Better than Naroto Sage but not Naroto Sage Master

Best Trait: Frenzy

Naroto Evolutions
Mythic
• For the Sage Evolution, same as Sasoke but becomes Hybrid/Air at the third upgrade and is a bit weaker overall
• That said the new Sage Master Evolution is a Meta DPS and you should absolutely go for it as it out DPSs most Mythics including Sasoke Hebi
• You can evolve it into Sage Master by farming and getting the Master Sage Scroll from the Tailed Beast Event shop

Best Trait: Frenzy

13th Commander
GamePass Mythic
• Really underrated mythic with great DPS
• The best part is that you can get it by just progressing the GamePass
• A powerful option for Emperor if you don't have Super Roku Evo or Secrets

Best Trait: Emperor or The One

Akoza Evolution
Mythic
• One of the better sustained DPS Mythics
• Great with Frenzy or Berserk and not the best target for The One or Emperor
• Your go-to Earth DPS
• Hybrid/Air DPS

Best Trait: Frenzy

Kabuto King
Mythic
• The base version sucks but the Evolution Kabuto King is actually pretty good sustained DPS with long range

Best Trait: Frenzy or Talon

Yano Evolution
Mythic from Game Pass
• Easy to get since Yano is at the end of the gamepass and while the base version is okay the evolution is much stronger and actually competitive when compared to other Mythics

Best Trait: Frenzy

Kamado (Sun)
Mythic - Epic Banner Unit
• Get him on the Epic Banner because the Evolution is amazing DPS
• Really good for Infinite
• Komado Sun is in the upper tiers of the Mythics but can't be compared to Secrets

Best Trait: Berserk

Enorai Evo
Mythic
• A special shoutout to Enorai who is an amazing and in my opinion one of the best Mythics for Infinite due to his sustained DPS and ability

Support Highlights

The best support unit to go for early is Ulquiora because he is one of the best Hybrid units in the game. Then, take a look at some great options below for mid to late game. Here are all Hybrid & Air units in the Support category:

  • Ulquiorra at Upgrade 5 Unevo & Upgrade 9 for Evo
  • Ice Admiral & Evolution starting at Upgrade 4

Unit Notes

Tobito & Evolution
Mythic
• You can get the base Tobito via Tailed Beast Event Act 2 from the Event shop and then evolve him with Tobito's Mask
• Currently he's one of the best support units in the game
• For Raids and Infinite I prefer him over Ulquiorra slightly and he's a much better support than Ice Admiral and Dark Beard

Best Trait: The One or Talon

Jokar & Evolution
Mythic
• Another great support DPS option to add to a team
• Works great with Frenzy due to the cooldown reduction that makes Jokar's ability better

Best Trait: Frenzy

Ulquiorra & Evolution
Mythic
• Overall one of the most useful units in the game both for supports and DPS
• Easy to access Hybrid
• Best Nature unit in the game
• In my opinion a must-have for Raids/Infinite

Best Trait: Frenzy

Haumia (Mindbreaker)
Mythic
• One of the better crowd-control support Mythics
• I love it for Infinite
• The Frenzy cooldown reduction makes it really good
• This might be my favorite support in the entire game personally

Best Trait: Frenzy

Wind Prince Evo
Mythic
• A meta support unit
• Works great both in Infinite and Progression

Best Trait: Frenzy

Ice Admiral & Evolution
Mythic
• One of the better support units in the game
• Both the Evolution and the base version are useful
• Your go-to Water unit
• Hybrid/Air at Upgrade 4

Best Trait: Frenzy

Dark Beard
Legendary
• A budget alternative support that slows enemy units at Upgrade 3

Best Trait: Sharp Shooter

Oreheme
Legendary
• Another budget alternative support that buffs your units.
• Better than Dark Beard and Ice Admiral in my opinion due to the powerful buffs on your meta DPS units.

Best Trait: Sharp Shooter

Starter Highlights

These are some of the best starting units in Anime Final Strike. They offer cheap placements and good damage that will carry your early waves until you can farm up for the Meta units above. These work both for progression but mainly for Raids/Infinite.

Unit Notes

Best Starters
• Great starters for Progression and Raid/Infinite
• Note that Black Roku, Kaziru and Vejita can target Air
• Vejita Super is the best one

Best Gem and Trait Farm Methods in Anime Final Strike

Here's how to farm Gems, Traits and Perfect Stat Engrams in Anime Final Strike:

  • Perfect Stat Engrams: Farm via the Gold shop, Free Daily Wheel Spins, rewards for progressing and of course codes which are linked below.
  • Best Gems Farm: I recommend farming Event on Act 1 since I get 30-60k+ Gems overnight. The range depends on how good your team is and how many of the best DPS & Support units you have.
  • Best Trait Farm: Raids (50), Tailed Beast Event (25), Dailies (9-11), Challenge every half an hour, Infinite to 15 and restart.

That's it for my Anime Final Strike tier list and guide. The best way to get started on getting the strongest units is by claiming our Anime Final Strike codes for free spins and more goodies.

The pre-orders are now available for both PC and consoles, and come in three different editions. As usual, you can opt for only one edition based on your needs and budget. This year, some changes are being made to how advanced access works and the content of the three editions. But first, let's take a look at when the game will launch.

Standing by a crafting station covered in paint in disney dreamlight valley

Star Path duties are some of the toughest quests to get done in Disney Dreamlight Valley. These missions often give you a tricky task with little guidance, as is the case with the craft any refinement item duty.

Prior to this duty, there's never been a task that asked you to make refinement items, so there's a decent chance you might be unsure what this means. It's not too tough a quest to get done once you understand what it's asking, so here's how to craft any refinement item in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

What is a refinement item in Disney Dreamlight Valley?

Refined Material category in disney dreamlight valley
Screenshot by Destructoid

A refinement item is anything you can make in the Refined Material category at a crafting station. There are five different categories of items you can craft, and only those listed in this single specific category count for the Star Path duty. Refined Materials include items like Ingots, Night Shards, Fabric, and other similar assets.

All refinement items in Disney Dreamlight Valley

All items listed in the Refined Material category count for the Star Path duty that asks you to craft items. If you want to make extra sure you choose the right ones, though, here are all the refinement items you can make.

  • Brick
  • Coal Ore
  • Empty Vial
  • Fabric
  • Fiber
  • Four-Leaf Clover
  • Glass
  • Gold Ingot
  • Iron Ingot
  • Night Shard
  • Pixel Shard Duplicates
  • Rope
  • Seaweed
  • Soil
  • Tinkering Parts
  • V-EGG-etable Seed
  • Brass Ingot
  • Bronze Ingot
  • Electric Power
  • Mechanical Parts
  • Snippets
  • Storybook Magic

crafting snippet in disney dreamlight valley
Screenshot by Destructoid

Although all refinement items count for this task, some are much easier to make than others. If you're looking for the best use of your resources, I recommend crafting items like Iron Ingots, Brick, and Soil since you need lots of all three to make other crafted items like paths, fences, and furniture. Some of the other items are much more costly to make and not as useful, which means you may end up wasting resources. It's best to pick items you think you'll likely use in the future to make sure you don't spend your precious materials on items you don't need.

Craft any refinement item in Disney Dreamlight Valley

To complete the craft any refinement item task for the Retro Roadtrip Star Path event, you need to make 15 items in the Refined Material category. How you break up this process is entirely up to you, which means you can mix and match between different items or make 15 of the same.

Finishing this mission gets you 20 Tokens to spend in the event. This is the maximum amount you can get from any one task, so it's certainly a mission worth completing. You might need to stock up on more Tokens to claim some of the bigger prizes, though, so consider working on cooking a fairly fancy appetizer, digging for pottery materialharvesting something white and fluffy, and collecting some shoreline shellfish next.

crimson desert screenshot

At this year's Gamescom, I had the opportunity to try the latest build of Crimson Desert, a new action-adventure game from the Pearl Abyss team. Honestly, I went into it with no expectations.

I had seen snippets of gameplay, and it appeared to be Breath of the Wild-like, featuring a large-scale world with varying degrees of combat difficulty. But nothing could prepare me for the overwhelming amount of information that I would be greeted with in the opening couple of minutes of my hour-long session.

I want to start by saying that this game can be overwhelming due to the numerous mechanics for combat, traversal, puzzle solving, and more that you need to learn, and also because of its massive scale.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R59mT0IFKeI&ab_channel=PlayStation

For the first 15 minutes, I spent my time in a tutorial learning all the different combat styles available to me, and I was lost before I even caught my first glimpse at the world. There are so many different control schemes and options for fighting alone that I couldn't help but mash the same button when it actually came to real combat, as I had already forgotten all the different combo styles and abilities available to me.

I almost felt like there was too much that I needed to remember in such a short time. But I do feel like being able to learn and grasp all these new things slowly would be much easier, a luxury we'll all have at release. Also, it's hard not to compare it to Breath of the Wild when, after the tutorial, it makes you glide from a high place to look at the massive world around you.

When it finally came to try out the game's story mission, I was tasked with repelling an enemy at various forts and was quickly thrust into combat with 20 different soldiers around me, all fighting me at the same time. It was here that I realised I could easily be overwhelmed by my enemies, and unlike other games where enemies will attack you 1 at a time, giving you a chance to parry, they all attack me at the same time, leading to my swift death. It's a welcome difficulty spike because it represents how real battles would go. Still, it goes to show how easily you can be destroyed for rushing through a level and not planning meticulously beforehand.

I also have to state the obvious. This world is pretty gorgeous in detail. I was only shown a small part of the larger world, but you can clearly see areas in the distance that you could travel to and explore should you wish to do so. Especially when you consider all the traversal options available to you, like having a horse that you can summon at any given time, and also the gliding mechanic —among other things— that gives you a sense of freedom that I couldn't properly explore in this demo.

Still, the overwhelming aspect of it leaves me a little worried when it comes to the sheer amount of things you can do. I'm afraid that it might put off a vast majority of players who don't want to learn all these different button combinations and mechanics and would rather have a simplistic experience where they can explore at their leisure. For now, though, I'm cautiously awaiting hearing more details about this title before its eventual release, and I'm hopeful that these worries will quickly be forgotten about when I play the official version of the game in the future.

A large group of characters wearing firey Phoenix skins in Marvel Rivals

A new hero joins the battle every month in Marvel Rivals, which means there are always exciting additions to look forward to. A reliable leaker in the community may have uncovered two of Marvel's finest set to be joining the roster soon—Deadpool and Daredevil.

X0XLEAK is a trusted source in the community, as everything they have posted so far has ended up in the game. This time, they've shared some voice lines between various Marvel Rivals heroes and these two new recruits.

Jeff with Deadpool Plush in Marvel Rivals
Screenshot by Destructoid

On X (formerly Twitter), X0XLEAK posted two videos packed with leaked voice lines for each character. So far, we only have the lines said to these characters by existing heroes in the game, but these teasers have clear references to both Daredevil and Deadpool.

For now, Daredevil only has leaked dialogue with Venom and Squirrel Girl. Venom tells Daredevil, "We do not like the way you have been looking at us, Devil," while Squirrel Girl says, "You heard the man with the horns, more skittering, less chittering."

The merc with a mouth has a lot more voice lines, which isn't all that surprising considering Deadpool's overly talkative nature. He's already got lines with Hulk, Punisher, Rocket Raccoon, Storm, Doctor Strange, Magik, Mantis, Venom, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Peni Parker, Namor, and, of course, his best bud, Wolverine.

Some of the best voice lines that have leaked so far are Wolverine saying, "I think I've finally stabbed you in the head one too many times," Rocket Raccoon saying, "Who was that guy? It's like he never stopped talking, even when he was down for the count," and Namor saying, "I have no idea what you're blathering about, cretin."

Phoenix and Blade battling side by side in Marvel Rivals
Screenshot by Destructoid

Deadpool and Daredevil are two of Marvel's coolest and most iconic characters, so I'm certainly excited to see some solid teasers for their arrival. My excitement is overshadowed with worry, though, as I fully expect they'll both be Duelists, thus inflating this already massive group of heroes even further and amplifying the already present issue of too many characters in this category and not enough Vanguards or Strategists.

Of course, the roles for both characters haven't been confirmed yet, but it's tough to see these two as anything other than Duelists. Their skills just don't match up with a large tank designed to sustain heavy damage and draw enemy fire or a support unit focused on healing and lending help to allies. The devs could always surprise us and get extra creative with their kits, but these two just feel like they were born to be Duelists.

I'm a big fan of both Deadpool and Daredevil, but can we please focus on evening out the roster instead of adding two more Duelists? I know the devs have been trying to force players to test out other roles, but it hasn't really worked, which means Strategists and Vanguards will likely continue to suffer when these two arrive.

Cloak and Dagger posing together at the Hellfire Gala in Marvel Rivals
Screenshot by Destructoid

Because of how iconic Daredevil and Deadpool are, I feel like it'll be even worse than just a Duelist being added, as many players will likely be extra eager to play these two if they're one of their favorite characters. I know the devs have said they plan their releases around 12 months in advance, so it's likely the schedule for the next year or so is already fully set, but we desperately need mostly Strategists and Vanguards, not two more Duelists.

In season three, we already had back-to-back Duelist debuts with Phoenix and Blade's arrival. As a Strategist and Vanguard main, it's been absolutely brutal. I'm not saying we should forget adding any Duelists at all, but we should at least be getting two Vaguards and two Strategists for every Duelist that arrives until things even out. We really need it. I want to be fully excited about the likely impending arrival of Deadpool and Daredevil, but I just can't get over my worry and frustration.

What do you think about the leaks, Destructoid? Are you excited for Deadpool and Daredevil's likely arrival sometime in the near future? Are you also wishing for more Strategists and Vanguards? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments so we can discuss.

basketball zero style and zone tier list and guide

When it comes to the best Basketball Zero style and zone you have to consider how oppressive and versatile a style is and what are good zone combos. I'll be ranking styles based on both how good individual moves are and also how well they combine together. For zones I'll rank them based on how good they are for most styles. Here's my Basketball Zero style and zone tier list and guide.

Updated on August 26, 2025: Updated the tier list for both styles and zones according to the Spider VS Symbiote patch. Added Spider & Symbiote to styles and Darkness & Senses to zones.

Basketball Zero Style Tier List

basketball zero style tier list

There's no D-Tier because every style can be good based on your skill and your playstyle. That said, this Basketball Zero style tier list takes into account the power of moves individually and how they combo together to create an oppressive playstyle both offensive and defensively. I have accounted for the buffs and nerfs and even though styles like Chrollo and Tatlis got nerfed to be more predictable, they are still quite powerful. Note that A and B tier aren't weak styles, they just require more practice and skill than the rest though the B-Tiers are underpowered and could use a buff. Let's dive into each individual style and their moves below.

SSS-Tier Styles

SSS-Tier Styles Why SSS-Tier? Pros & Cons

Psychic
Limited
• An incredibly versatile set of moves that's good at everything
• You have offensive options with the long range Ordinary Shot that you can move into with the Teleport move
• Then you have an unblockable teleport pass and can even invert controls of enemy players which even against skilled players is extremely annoying and can cause them to fumble
• In Awakening the Self Pass teleport covers such a long distance that you can set up the perfect shot where there are no blockers and the others are just raw offense and free points
+ SSS-Tier offense that disrupts how the enemy team plays
+ Tons of combos with your team
+ Hard to block

– Being picky here but it could use a better shot

Chrollo
Limited
• Chrollo is a mix of powerful moves and knowing when to activate Awakening
• First off the Dribble is broken where you can cover such a long distance with iFrames, especially if you have a Dribble-oriented zone
• Then the full and half court shot is crazy good and better than Sniper because it's faster
• You can activate Awakening when someone is about to steal from you and then your Awakening moves are also really strong offensively for almost free points
• To top it all off, if you see a teammate is about to get their ball stolen you can auto pass to you with Pass!
+ Incredible mobility and range
+ Tons of tricks you can do with Pass! and Dribble

Weak to players waiting to steal from you after Dribble
So learn to save your Awakening for iFrames

Copycat
Mythic
• Copycat is always going to be at least S-Tier because the more OP styles get released the more Copycat can mix and match OP moves to create the most flexible style in the game.
• You can have the most powerful moves in BBZ like Snatch Block from Giant for defense or Creator's Dribble from Chrollo for offense and theoretically get all their strengths and none of their weaknesses.
• Overall, it can be A-Tier or less if you don't have good styles to copy in your match but most often people are playing Chrollo, Tatlis, etc., so you'll always have something powerful to copy.
+ Most Flexible Style
+ SSS-Tier Potential Depending on Enemy Styles

– Highly Dependent on Enemy Team's Styles

Tatlis
Limited
• Tatlis and Chrollo used to be in a league of their own and especially Tatlis since it was the most powerful style in Basketball Zero before the nerf
• That said it's still good and the main reason is that your Snap is just an AOE stun around you that disables players
• After stunning you can shoot, pass or steal and then dash away
• This is boosted by Colored Strike that just allow you to steal the ball with an added mobility move
• The awakenings are just aggro offense and defense in one with the ragdoll, OP
• I would say even with the nerf where it's more predictable, it can still be S-Tier due to just how powerful the stun and steal are
+ Literally disables players around you
+ Incredibly mobile
+ Great in any team and with any zone

– No weaknesses

Jackpot
Mythic
• Jackpot requires a lot of practice to learn its Jackpot move rotations but once you do, this is a really powerful style
• You can literally claim the ball automatically if your teammates have it, you can auto-block shots, transfer the ball from the enemy to your team, mid-air dash steal, etc.
• Plus, there's a cool combo where you can use the Lucky Bounce twice because the Jackpot steal resets the cooldown
• Overall, Jackpot requires practice but can dominate if you know how to
+ One Of The Best Move Combinations
+ Highly Flexible in All Roles
+ Excellent Offensive Power

– Hard to Learn and Can be Unpredictable

Basketball God
Limited
• Shamgod is one of the best dribble moves in the game because if you do it sideways it can get you right into the 3-point area for a dunk and a free point
• Reverse Dunk is a great dunk move and Awakenings are really good for free points
• Overall it's more versatility than other limiteds, strong awakening and overall can be OP both if you spam dunk and go for 3-pointers
+ One of the fastest offensive styles in the game
+ Amazing mix of mobility, dribble, and shoot moves

– Lacks defense and team support

Symbiote
Limited
• Symbiote is really good and much more oppressive than Spider since it has better offensive and defensive options
• It's also strong defensively with essentially a better version of Rubberman's defense
• The Pull and Evade are a great combo and the Dribble is quite strong to get close
• The Awakening is amazing too so overall this is a strong competitor for the SSS-Tier
+ Amazing defense
+ Great offense and mobility potential as well

– Need to play a bit more to find a counter

S-Tier Styles

S-Tier Styles Why S-Tier? Pros & Cons

Cyber
Limited
• Cyber is a great style don't get me wrong, the only reason it's not SSS is because the moves can be predictable
• It's best combined with the Shock Zone
• The Mine steal move and the Dash are amazing even though you can see them coming
• The shot has slow start-up so you can block it but the Awakening moves are really good and have a fire soundtrack
+ Great steal and mobility move
+ Has some utility with the implant buffs

– Moves can be predictable against experienced players

Rubberman
Miracle
• Gum Slap and Gum Block are incredible moves and the main reason you want to play Rubberman
• The shot is decent and the Observe auto dribble is really good
• All moves give you that offensive/defensive flexibility similar to Giant
• And if you can do the dribble move from Awakening easily, Rubberman becomes one of the best Miracles
+ Great defense and steals
+ Flexible both in offense and defense

– Needs a slightly more powerful shot

Lazy Worker
Mythic
• Lazy Worker destroys enemy teams when you're aggressive on the offense forcing passes and failed shots so that you can catch them with Trap, such a powerful move
• The Catch Me is great for both defense and slight mobility into an offensive shot that scores 3
• Overall an incredibly flexibile style that can duke it out with the best of them
+ Turns loose balls into instant points
+ One of the better Dribble moves in the game

– Could use more mobility

Switcher
Miracle
• With Switcher you're basically always forcing the enemy team to guard all your teammates because you can just switch places with them and shoot if they're not blocked
• The Cursed Dash is also pretty good for repositioning but I recommend doing it after switching places to reach the scoring zone
• The zone is a free defensive tool and is usually free points with the Imagination shot
• It's not SSS for me because it needs a better shoot move
+ Incredible mobility and utility
+ Forces enemies to block all teammates since you can teleport

– Needs better shot moves

Emperor
Miracle
• The Emperor Reach auto-steal was the main element of Emperor that made it so powerful and with the massive nerf to Reach Emperor took a big hit
• That said it's still one of the most flexible styles in the game with offense, utility, defense and passing all in one with an amazing Awakening
• Pair with the Gold Vision Zone to slide around the court
• Overall Emperor is the well Emperor of 2v2s but for 3v3s it did fall a bit behind
+ Amazing set of base moves for mobility and support
+ Great defense and offense between base and Awakening
+ Highly Flexible against all styles including Chrollo and Tatlis

– Lacks strong shooting moves
Gold
Miracle
• Gold has some of the best passes in the game because they're fast and unblockable
• In addition to that the Street Dribble move goes so far with iFrames that it can take you into the 3-point shooting range easy for a free 3
• It was nerfed to remove pressure, otherwise Gold would probably be SSS-Tier
+ Some of the best passes in the game
+ Really strong dribble move

– Can't carry alone and requires a good team

Ace
Mythic
• With the rework, Ace is an incredible aggressive offense option with the Athletic Drive being much more difficult to predict and block
• It even has an off-ball version to catch up to players that Dribble away from you
• Athletic Fade is also better but the main thing is the new 100% Drive Awakening that drastically boosts your speed if you mash Space and makes you Dribble constantly as you reach the hoop to score
• Tons of options to score even after the nerf and this is basically one of the best 1v1 and 2v2 styles but for 3v3 there are slightly better options
+ Best Dribbling Moves
+ Best Carry in Public Games
+ Some of the most powerful Awakening Moves

– Aomine Daiki has no weaknesses

Giant
Mythic
• Giant just brings in so much offensive and defensive flexibility and is one of the best defensive styles in the game with Lock
• With for example Posterizer or Streetdribbler to reach the enemy three-point area you can have great offensive potential with Charge and the Dunk
• With Snatch Block you are a defensive menace to block shots and then go into a counter attack
• Overall an incredibly competitive style for any mode, your team will love you
+ Powerful Dunking Moves
+ Best Defense/Offense Mix

– High Cooldowns
– Needs mobility/defensive Zones

Flash
Legendary
• If you know you know, Flash can be on par with Ace (Especially post nerf) to create space between you and your opponents if you use the Dash and Dribble moves correctly
• You have low cooldowns and great 1v1 potential with two aggressive moves
• The Awakening steals balls which can be turned into a free point if you're close enough or you can just pass to reposition
• Overall, you need to practice with Flash and not spam the two moves but once you master matchups you can legit be a budget version of Ace
+ Extremely Flexible
+ Excellent Dribble and Mobility

– A Trash Version of Ace If Played Incorrectly

Lock
Legendary
• Lock is a bit slept on since it's a great interception style if you pressure passes but it definitly needs a slight buff
• Still, the reason it's still such a great style is that on a high level of Basketball Zero players pass A LOT, as they should
• Lock abilities are super clutch in those games since you can intercept passes and then either score of pass immediately so as not to lose the ball
• You always need to be careful around Lock with passes and this kind of pressure is what puts high and probably even higher with a buff
+ One of the best defense-Focused Style
+ Shuts Down Enemy Passes

– Not Flexible For Offense

A-Tier Styles

A-Tier Styles Why A-Tier? Pros & Cons

Spider
Limited
• Spider is fun to play because it has great mobility and freedom with the Roll variants but these aren't super oppressive and OP
• That said, the Steals can be quite powerful if you know when to use them with both Shot Sense and Teamwork giving you a lot of steal options
• That said you don't have a lot of powerful offensive options to use the ball after stealing and should usually pass to teammates
• The Awakenings are great utility too and overall this is a fun style to play by Tatlis that's not that oppressive so I ranked it lower
+ Great mobility
+ Amazing stealing options with two moves

– Needs more offensive power with better shots

Phantom
Epic
• Phantom maybe deserves S-Tier but I'll keep it in A for now since it's highly dependent on how skilled your team is and whether they pass or not
• With players who know how to play teamwork-wise Phantom can pull of clutch support/pass plays and change how the game flows since the enemy team must always be aware of you
• One of the most OP chemical reactions with Star and it's easy to pull off
• If you're playing with a pre-made group of friends via voice-comms who know what they're doing Phantom is at least A-Tier.
+ One of the best support styles in the game
+ If you're in voice chat and playing with skilled players
it's SSS-Tier

– Lacks the shooting and carry potential in public games with randoms

Perfection
Limited
• I might catch some serious heat for this but I think Perfection has fallen off drastically both with the nerfs and the current meta
• It usually doesn't compete that well with the Mythics anymore but the Dribble is still really good
• The three point shot is easily blockable and Blink while weaker can still be good to steal the ball
• Overall it's still a good style with the Awakening and might have low A-Tier potential in aggresive offense but Perfection is not what it used to be
+ Great Mobility
+ Decent Offense, Defense, and Dribble
+ Powerful Awakening Buff

– Requires Skill and Aggression for Full Potential

Star
Legendary
• The rework definitely made Star much better than it used to be for 3v3s
• The Drive is a great mobility move to get you in range for the dunk
• Overall you depend on ball defense a lot so dribble Zones are a must
• Also, a lot of the strength of Star comes from the great chemical reactions like the OP one with Phantom
+ A Great Mobility Move
+ Best when played aggressively with defensive Zones

– Needs to Get In Close
- No team utility

Uncle Sam
Limited
• Uncle Sam's strength is the Eagle Drive for dribble and the full-court Declaration
• The Cannon Pass is decent but it's not an unblockable pass like Gold or Psychic since Giant, Emperor and others can steal it so it's a A-Tier move
• The Cannon Shot or Star Shot can also be easily blocked
+ The full-court Declaration is powerful
+ The Eagle Drive dribble is great mobility, offense and defense in one

– Cannon shot is easily blockable
Passes are harder to block but also blockable

Sniper
Legendary
• I'm solely ranking Sniper with the Animalistic Zone to boost jump range and make the shot moves more difficult to block
• This combo can be quite good but still, Sniper is very predictable and without Animalistic you'll be getting blocked 90% of the time
• Plus, your lack of mobility makes you easy pray so B-Tier is perfect with Animalistic in mind
+ Longest Range Shooting Moves
+ Auto-aim and Guaranteed-score moves

– Highly Dependent on Cooldowns, Positioning and the Animalistic Zone
– No Mobility Moves

B-Tier Styles

B-Tier Styles Why B-Tier? Pros & Cons

Clutch
Rare
• Clutch can be quite decent if you learn how to play it especially with the buffs but it just got power creeped by other OP styles
• The shooting moves here are good due to the Awakening which can be free points if you know when to shoot it
• That said, it's drastically underpowered compared to the rest
• I've been playing it to great effect against higher rarity styles, you just need practice and to understand the game mechanics well to make full use of the moves
+ Easy to Get
+ Powerful Steal and Shoot Move

– Only One Ultimate/Awakening
– No Mobility Moves

Fetch
Epic
• A great offensive style because the Dive is pretty good and the Float can be free points if you're in the right position
• That said Fetch struggles to reach the hoop which is why it's low
+ Great mix of offense and defense
+ Very skill-based with high potential

– Lacks good mobility and dribbling moves

Playmaker
Epic
• One of the best 2v2 styles in the game due to the Alley Oop being free points
• That said for 1v1 and 3v3 it's not the best
• The Awakening Push Off move for solo scoring is pretty good so Playmaker allows for a few free points but it's still underpowered in a practical 3v3
+ Alley Oop is one of the best support moves
+ Incredibly flexible support and scoring

– Only One Awakening Move
– Relies highly on team coordination

C-Tier Styles

C-Tier Styles Why C-Tier? Pros & Cons

Quick
Rare
• Ironically not the quickest style in the game since other higher tiers cover more distance and have more utility and shooting power
• Still can be decent to reposition and has some flexibility for offense and defense with the speed boost and dash but still not that good in terms of raw offense
+ Decently mobile style
– No shooting moves

Chuck
Rare
• While Chuck can be extremely fun to play with its high-risk high-reward playstyle, I don't find it reliable for higher-level games
• It's a subjective thing but I prefer Jackpot if I'm going for a luck-based mechanic since the rewards are greater
• You can still win games with Chuck but in those clutch moments where you really need to score, Chuck can fail you.
+ Easy to get & fun to play
+ High-Risk High-Reward

– Not Reliable
– Luck Based

Basketball Zero Zone Tier List

basketball zero zone tier list

The best Basketball Zero zones usually give you extra dribble which is the most powerful boost in the game as well as giving you something else. Extra dribble is S-Tier because it boosts your defenses and movement options, especially on styles with low defenses, allowing you to score more. The A-Tier are the zones that give you unblockable dunks which is the second most powerful boost along with some other useful benefits. As for B-Tier and below these are usually great alternative bonuses but they get weaker and weaker as you approach D-Tier. In addition to the Basketball Zero zone tier list, let's dive into all zones separately to talk about their individual strengths.

S-Tier Zones

Zone Effects Why S-Tier

Emperor Vision
Miracle
• 25% chance that nearby opponents miss shots
• Extra dribble
• Can't be ankle broken
• Besides extra dribble being the most powerful zone boost, this is also great for defensives styles like Emperor, Giant and Lock
• That said it can pretty much work on any non-aggresive style

Gold Vision
Miracle
• Increased dribble speed
• Extra dribble
• Increased pass speed
• Passes can turn into a dunk
• Amazing support oriented zone for styles with passes like Gold

Ordinary
Limited
• Abilities have 15% less cooldown
• Extra dribble
• Faster run speed off ball
• Like Chrollo's Chaos zone but much better

Darkness
Limited
• Faster with ball
• Increased Dunk Range
• Extra dribble
• Amazing for dunk oriented styles like Basketball God or Star but if you're going dunk then Posterizer and Basketball God is better

Senses
Limited
• Faster movement speed
• Faster shooting speed
• Extra dribble
• Just like Street Dribbler but slightly better

Perfectionist
Limited
• Extra dribble
• Speed increased
• Longer range buffed
• Just a better Street Dribbler

Shock
Limited
• Reduces Psycho Bar %1 every second
• Extra dribble
• Shooting range increase
• Shooting assist increase
• Amazing on Cyborg which is one of the best styles in the game

Street Dribbler
Mythic
• Gives you an extra dribble
• Makes you faster with the ball
• Your ol' reliable if you don't have any of the other extra dribble zones

A-Tier Zones

Zone Effects Why A-Tier

Real Basketball
Limited
• Unblockable dunks
• Increased shooting range
• Faster speed
• S-Tier on Star and Basketball God and many other dunk styles
• Otherwise it's if you're going for dunks from time to time

Posterizer
Mythic
• Unblockable dunks
• Gives you a speed boost in the 2 point area
• Same reasons as Real Basketball but the speedboost is only in the 2 point area

Quick Draw
Legendary
• Release shots faster
• Ball reaches destination faster
• Aim assist slightly improved
• This is a decent zone that makes it harder for opponents to block you by upsetting their jump timing

Speed Dribble
Legendary
• You're faster while dribbling • A decent alternative to extra dribble zones but not as powerful

Animalistic
Mythic
• Increased jump height
• Faster speed
• Longer block window
• Animalistic is S-Tier for Sniper to make your shots more difficult to block but otherwise it's between A and B
• Still good for blocking shots

B-Tier Zones

Zone Effects Why B-Tier

Limitless
Legendary
• Greatly improved aim assist
• Shots from further distance
• Makes it so that you can score 3-pointers from further away, not bad
• The reason it's B is because there are zones that already do this and something else higher up
• That said I might have low balled this because it is A-Tier material on some styles

President
Limited
• Whole teams shooting speed is increased
• Increase their zone by 20%
• Very situational but can be very powerful if your team has good zones and you pop this at the right time

Chaos
Limited
• Increased speed with the ball
• Increased shooting speed
• 10% less cooldowns on abilities
• Overall just a decently good style that makes you shoot out moves a bit faster and move faster with the ball both of which are valuable boosts to have

Rubber
Miracle
• Can't be ankle broken
• Stuns close enemy player when you ankle break them
• A better version of Paint since the stun doesn't have a hit chance
• That said you don't usually want to spam ankle breaks anyway so being immune to them isn't that good
• The main good thing here is the stun

C-Tier Zones

Zone Effects Why C-Tier

777
Mythic
One of 3 boosts will be granted on activation
• Extra speed
• Extra shooting Range
• Or extra dribble
• High risk, low reward since you want the extra dribble but 66% of the time you don't get it
• That said the extra shooting range can sometimes be useful for 3 pointers so you have to adapt but it's not that reliable nor powerful

Paint
Limited
• Increased speed without the ball
• 25% chance of stunning someone for 5 seconds on ankle break
• Can't get ankle broken.
• A worse version of Rubber since your stun has a hit chance

Lockdown
Epic
• Shortened STEAL cooldown
• Increased defense speed
• Can be great for aggresive defensive styles

D-Tier Zones

Zone Effects Why D-Tier

Unbreakable
Mythic
• Can't be ankle broken • Rubber and Paint but drastically weaker

Dime
Epic
• Team-mates gain speed boost for a few seconds when you pass to them • Not useless but not that powerful either

Hustle
Rare
• Slightly faster speed while running with and without the ball • Ehh

Sprinter
Rare
• Faster movement speed when the ball is loose • Meh but more useful than Hustle

Anyone who backed the original Hollow Knight Kickstarter over ten years ago should dust off their old inboxes, as Team Cherry is starting to roll out messages to you regarding Silksong.

Surveys are going out to players who backed the original game, asking them to pick their preferred codes for the upcoming release. The options are PC and Switch, despite Wii U being the original confirmed launch console all those years ago.

https://twitter.com/wario64/status/1960078525307736142?s=46&t=eJmY99xyXgy2CJNq1541kA

For those wondering why those who backed the original game are getting a code for free, well, it's pretty simple. Silksong was initially intended as a DLC for the first game. Still, it unexpectedly grew larger than anticipated, eventually becoming a spin-off and standalone game rather than a simple add-on DLC pack.

It makes you wonder what else the team would have done had the original Kickstart gone beyond its 50,000 dollars in fundraising and unlocked additional Stretch Goals like the third playable character and even PS Vita support. In hindsight, it's amusing to see a project that only raised that much on Kickstarter achieve such success.

For anyone who did back the original Kickstarter but hasn't yet recieved a survey email to get their free game code, Team Cherry is asking players to contact backers@teamcherry.com.au mentioning the email address you used for the campaign for verification, as well as asking players to tell them their new email address, so they can get the survey sent out to you and confirm your identity. They also ask that people wait 48 hours before contacting them, though.

For anyone who didn't back the original Kickstarter, don't panic. No one is getting access to the game early. Not even the press are getting any form of early access (apparently), so everyone will be able to log in and experience the game on multiple systems come Sept. 4, when the game finally releases worldwide.

You know, unless Team Cherry decides to delay it for the memes.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds action screenshot

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is looking to tear a rift into different locations when it drops later this fall, featuring fun gadgets and crossover characters galore.

Sporting the new CrossWorlds feature, racing tracks in the game will have ring portals that will change the environment completely, basically turning each track into three-in-one in certain situations, making for a daring new take on the genre.

This past week at gamescom, Destructoid sat down with the head of all things Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, to discuss the upcoming game's crossover characters and why some of them seem to be mute in-game.

Note: Parts of this interview were edited to avoid repetition and allow for better text clarity.

With all of the different racing games coming out this year, especially with Mario Kart World recently, Kirby Air Riders, even Garfield Kart, How do you feel Sonic Racing Crossworlds is positioned as a racing game to become something that can become its own thing? And what would you say is the main feature or selling point that distinguishes Crossworlds from its competitors?

Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic Team (via translator): Sonic, as you know, had a lot of racing games in the past. All those racing games developed by [Sumo Digital] team and also Sonic Riders is also a racing game for Sonic, as well. And when we kicked off this project, the team wanted to make sure that we can develop the most fun Sonic racing game in history as one of the key goals that they had when they kicked off this project. So, to achieve that, [we] decided to work with the Sega Arcade Division, the Arcade Game Division. So, yeah, I think the goal was to really develop the best Sonic racing experience, to create the best Sonic racing game was really the goal. As far as differentiating from the other rating titles that the other companies were making, [that] wasn't actually one of the key things that they were thinking at the start.

So, I wanted to talk about the gadgets and customization features that you included with this game. Obviously, it's very unique in that the different gadgets combine to give yourself different ways of play. That means that not every rider is the same. I wanted to know how painful that was to develop and how the team came about deciding all these different customization options and actually implementing them into the title.

Iizuka: It adds more, I guess, it could change the rules. So, they have to kind of enlarge the scope of the gameplay. It's also another thing that was really difficult for them. Online competition is really one of the key things that kind of drew this idea about the gadgets. And the dev team thinks that one of the good things or the important things about online competition is that the players will be able to kind of bring their own setting, their own uniqueness to their online experience. [Sonic Team] wanted to create a system where they can implement those [unique ideas] or think about their own strategy so that they can compete in the online multiplayer.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds t-rex

CrossWorlds and crossovers are a big feature of this game, which is being shown, and obviously, the season pass on the DLC with Minecraft, Nickelodeon properties, and recently revealed Pac-Man. I wanted to know where this idea of crossovers came about and which IP or teams were looked at, and what the criteria was for that expanse into a bigger game.

Iizuka: [Sonic Team] wanted to make sure that this was like the best Sonic racing title that incorporates all those elements from the past as well. Guest characters was also one important mechanic that they wanted to reintroduce into this game. Because of that, as you already know, they announced guest Sega characters such as Ichiban and Joker that will be available for free every month through updates. And also then, to expand a bit more on that, if players can buy the season pass, they'll be able to also play IPs such as Minecraft and stuff that also includes new tracks as well. It was just kind of mechanical something that they always wanted to implement. When you talk about the criteria, of course, [Sega Team] also looked about to external ideas to see if they wanted to introduce IPs that have uniqueness and also have maybe a fun world. And then kind of put together some ideas of what IPs could maybe fit, what IPs have uniqueness, and then [Sega Team] approached multiple companies. And I guess the companies that we were able to agree upon were the ones that we are going down.

There has been some talk regarding certain DLC characters not having voices in-game currently. Even just playing on the demo, there was an instance of them not having a voice. Is there any reason behind this? And also, will you potentially add updates in the future to add voices if there's enough fan outcry for it?

Iizuka: In this game, there's a lot of interactions between characters, so if we include voices for the guest characters, that will mean a lot of interaction between them and Sega characters. The scope of the review that we'll have to ask the external companies will become very large. We didn't want to make it difficult for the external company. So that's, I guess, the reason why we decided not to be.

So just to clarify, then it was more a sense that it was just more about making sure the characters were in the game and looked good, and voices were an afterthought? Or is it a sense more that it was a gameplay decision, but it might be something that they'll look back at in the future?

Iizuka: Voices are a really important part of the game, but [Sonic Team] really focused on the interactions between the Sonic characters. The dev team really thinks that it's surprising how much interactions they put into the game for the 23 Sonic characters. They really had to focus, put all the effort into Sonic, that may be another reason. And they had to give up on the non-Sonic characters.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds - Sonic doing a trick
Image via SEGA

When did the team decide to allow players to literally crossover into different stages? And what were some of the difficulties that came with introducing a mechanic that loaded various random or different stages in one singular race?

Iizuka: The CrossWorlds mechanic was actually one of the very first keywords that the dev team was discussing. It was really a mechanic that was in their heads from the start, and that's actually one of the reasons they were able to kick off this project. It was a really difficult project. For a normal racing game, they just have to load one stage and that's it, but for our game, it has to load three stages. That means more data, and each stage has different lighting settings, different shadings and stuff, and additional mechanics. Also, players have to feel good when playing the game, so we have to make sure that players don't feel bad during those three stages. Building a stage that can support all three stages was very difficult.

Regarding the DLC and season pass, you looked at different IPs from a lot of companies. Was there a particular IP that you really wanted to cross over with that you couldn't get? Was there an IP that got away from you, or you couldn't finish or finalize in the end?

Iizuka: Minecraft was an IP that [we] really wanted to include in the game, and we were able to get it. The visuals are very different and unique, and also very popular with kids. That's one we were able to include. [Sega Team] also wanted to introduce characters from non-game media, like Nickelodeon. There were discussions and negotiations, and the IP [Sega Team] was able to agree upon are the ones in the game.

The post Iizuka explains how Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC guest characters were chosen and why they don't have voices appeared first on Destructoid.
