Kotaku Saturday, February 26, 2022 11:30 AM A clip of a Ukrainian fighter jet blowing up a suspected Russian aircraft started trending on social media yesterday. Many believed it was proof of the exploits of a mysterious and unverified ace pilot called the "Ghost of Kyiv." It was actually fake footage from the 2013 PC game, Digital Combat Simulator: World. |
PCGamesN Saturday, February 26, 2022 4:23 PM We've come a long way from the days of 8-bit games and screens with no backlight, as the Steam Deck reinvents everything you know about handheld gaming. It's not the first of its kind, nor is it the most powerful portable gaming PC out there, but Valve's software-first approach and staggeringly low starting price puts it in a class of its own. There's nothing quite like the Steam Deck on the market. It carries the same hybrid magic as the Nintendo Switch while marrying it with the versatility of an entry-level gaming PC. Backed by the overwhelming size of the Steam catalogue, no device has ever launched with such a wide array of games to choose from. Valve's even sifting through them all to ensure they're compatible with the device, and you shouldn't be afraid to dive into unverified titles - most I tried worked with the combination of trackpads and intuitive controller customisation. But you shouldn't get sucked into the vortex of potential and promises. The Steam Deck is not yet a finished product, and it'll take more polish for it to join the ranks of historical hall of famers like the Game Boy. PCGamesN Saturday, February 26, 2022 1:13 PM It's already one of the best platform games on PC, but 2018's Celeste also won the trophy for the Best Independent Game at The Game Awards that year. This month, however, YouTuber PrestigeIsKey discovered that trophy when shopping for a replica on eBay - which apparently the developer never received. It wasn't just one of our favourite games of 2018, platformer Celeste is also an excellent example of LGBT+ characters done right. It won the best indie game trophy at the TGAs for 2018 over the likes of Into The Breach, Return of the Obra Dinn, and The Messenger - but the team never received the trophy again afterward. Events took a funny turn this month when YouTuber and streamer PrestigeIsKey went looking for a replica Game Award on eBay and discovered a "Game Awards Game Trophy" for $500. The seller says it "came from one of our liquidation sources" but otherwise didn't know where it came from. Upon unboxing it, PrestigeIsKey discovered it was clearly marked as the award for Celeste. PCGamesN Saturday, February 26, 2022 12:02 PM The developer of Factorio has begun experimenting with "proper controller support" for one of the best management games on PC, with the goal of implementing it "later this year" - a decision it came to while trying Factorio on Valve's Steam Deck handheld. With the Steam Deck now officially out, the first owners of Valve's new portable gaming PC are finding out its quirks - as Factorio developer Wube Software discovered regarding their own strategy game and reported in a new blog post. While Factorio was initially used to advertise the Steam Deck, and it apparently "technically works great", the team ran into trouble with the controls. "Factorio was designed always with only mouse and keyboard in mind," explains developer Twinsen. They show a video of them getting it working, but it apparently requires players to make their "own controller configuration using Steam Input, trying to map the Steam Deck's buttons to keyboard and mouse interactions" - which apparently also needs "a lot of patience and a good understanding of Steam Input's action sets, layers, radial menus, et cetera." |
PCGamesN Saturday, February 26, 2022 11:21 AM 2015's Batman Arkham Knight is arguably the ultimate Batman game, and certainly among the greatest comic book games ever made. It boasts an open-world Gotham City that still looks good today, you come up against most of the franchise's stellar rogues' gallery - even an undead Joker - and it features the perfect evolution of developer Rocksteady's influential combat system. So what happened to Batman Arkham Knight 2? Rocksteady has since moved on to Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, with Batman Arkham Origins developer Warner Bros Montreal working on Gotham Knights. Granted, they're not in the same universe, but both games are seemingly Batman-less. It wasn't supposed to be this way, however. While Batman Arkham Knight apparently concludes with Bruce Wayne's death, the true ending offers a flash forward to a potential future-set sequel. In this new world, Commissioner Gordon is mayor, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon are married and have retired from fighting crime, and an almost demonic Dark Knight has appeared on the scene. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Saturday, February 26, 2022 3:22 PM In between the Steam Deck reviews and Gabe Newell interviews yesterday came a surprise announcement of a new, short game from Valve. Aperture Desk Job takes place in the Portal universe and stars Grady, a new personality core, setting you product testing challenges while you sit in front of controls that look suspicously like a Steam Deck. You won't need a Steam Deck to play it, though, when it launches on March 1st. |

Siliconera Saturday, February 26, 2022 3:00 PM Witch Watch is a manga that feels like it is covering quite a few genres. We have a situation where two teenagers with special abilities show up. There are hints that one, a witch named Nico, will eventually be in danger and need her bodyguard/familiar, an ogre named Morihito, to step up. It also can sometimes seem like some romantic comedy elements come into play, since the duo share some chemistry. However at its outset, what really ensures it works is the occasionally ridiculous dynamic and situations the two get into as a young witch trying to do good and young man attempting to save her from herself. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities for Witch Watch to get silly. The dynamic between Morihito and Nico is a good example. He's a very grounded and pragmatic individual. He's often realistic. She's more idealistic and naive. It allows for opportunities for Nico to be over the top, while Morihito can be the voice of reason and save the day. A good example comes when Nico shows Morihito what her magic can do. She wants to show how she can use a spell to turn anything to paper. Since he's unwilling to provide any of his things as an example, due to her breaking his favorite mug with another spell, she casts it on herself. She then… blows away. He chases her down and needs to destroy a wall so she doesn't suddenly become 3D again when trapped in a crack between two buildings. It also means we get moments in which we see Nico's idealized version of a situation and the reality of it all. For example, Morihito and Nico reuniting is a good example. She expects a scene out of a shojo manga. One where the two immediately blush, promise to never part again, and walk away as a couple. In reality, she crashes through the glass patio door, he's all business when they reintroduce themselves, and immediately sees it as a "can't be helped" situation. This is all a good set up for upcoming events. The Witch Watch manga hints that something bad is coming. It is part of why Morihito is her bodyguard in the first place. By establishing this tone, there's a sense of what the dynamic could be. The stage is being set for both characters to grow. This first volume establishes Nico's desire to help people. There's her willingness to try. We also see Morihito grow to accept who he is and his power. As the story goes on in the initial chapters, we see him willingly use his strength for the sake of Nico and others. Witch Watch is lighthearted, which works for it. We already have an idea things will eventually turn serious. There are also hints at the strength both Morihito and Nico will possess. But it also seems like Kenta Shinohara understands there is no rush to get to dire situations. As such, for now people can just enjoy the silliness of the situation. Which given the dynamic between the characters and their personalities, works quite well. Witch Watch volume 1 is available in English from Viz Media. New chapters also appear regularly on its site.
