This new GPU trick just made games 1.64x faster

One of the biggest drawbacks with the way games currently render 3D scenes is that there's still a surprising amount of back and forth communication required between the CPU and GPU. This overhead can slow down graphics card processing in a multitude of ways. However, a new technique demonstrated by AMD has managed to massively reduce this, boosting performance by 1.64x with without any extra processing power required.

The technique was demonstrated on an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, the best graphics card you can currently buy for workloads without ray tracing, but this technique doesn't require such a high-end GPU. As such, it could see performance increases in many games for a multitude of GPUs.

New Nvidia AI demo gives NPCs even more reasons to complain at you

Nvidia has just demoed the latest addition to Nvidia ACE, the company's interface for making it easy for game developers to create AI-generated NPCs. With the addition of the Inworld Engine from Inworld AI, developers can now quickly and easily add personality traits and backstories to their characters, allowing these features to inform how the character interacts with the player.

Nvidia has previously demonstrated similar tech powered by Convai AI, which it demonstrated at CES 2024. I had the chance to interact with that demo and was impressed by how well the demo could hear my voice, interpret my responses, and make the character interact in a natural feeling way.      Alone in the Dark review – the death of survival horror's pioneer

Popular gaming history will record 1992's Alone in the Dark as the first, formalized survival horror. Earlier experiments like Sweet Home, Project Firestart, or even 3D Monster Maze or James Andreasen's Haunted House established the spiritually assonant union of videogames and fear - when you're the one in control, and it's happening to you, it can be scarier than a movie or a book. But it was Frédérick Raynal and Infogrames who pushed the survival horror genre over the edge. Alone in the Dark ratified, or began to ratify, the mechanics. Combat is unintuitive by design and best avoided; progression depends on the discovery and decipherment of esoterica while simultaneously managing your constrictive inventory system.

New graphics card memory tech could boost performance by 12.5x

There's an exciting new graphics card memory technology on the horizon that could see huge gains in one of the most important aspects of GPUs: memory bandwidth. The new GPU SCM with DRAM tech can deliver peak gains of up to 12.5x compared to high-bandwidth memory (HBM), while also reducing power consumption.

HBM is a technology that AMD used in some of its previous best graphics card contenders, most notably the AMD Vega lineup of GPUs such as the AMD Radeon VII. It sought to massively increase memory bandwidth - a feat it very much achieved - by stacking the memory chips on top of each other and housing them much closer to the GPU than conventional GDDR. However, it was costly to produce, limited in overall capacity, and also difficult to cool.

As the name implies, it's a bigger, bolder and more ambitious take on their still very popular sandbox game TerraTech, but according to Payload's founder and CEO Russ Clarke, they're viewing this new version as more of a successor to TerraTech than a full-bodied sequel. "The overall quality of experience is really a huge leap forward," Clarke told me during a press presentation last week. "We're not calling it a sequel because we felt that making it a sequel would be a bit too constraining." Rather, it's "more of a reimagining" of the original game, says Clarke, with a change in engine and fresh investment from Tencent allowing them to reach the full potential of their original vision.

I didn't have any particular expectations for Heart Machine's open world roguelike Hyper Light Breaker, but I wasn't expecting it to feel so... broken-up, I guess. In this sequel to 2016's alternately wistful and frenzied action-RPG, you are a debonair-looking sod with a hoverboard, paraglider, blades and guns, sent out into the procedurally generated realms of the Overgrowth to kill Abyss Kings, eat stat boosts and extract with loot.

The aforesaid hoverboard and glider, together with the streaking neon visual direction, suggest a game of fluid acrobatics, akin to the studio's last release Solar Ash, which, to quote Ed's review, "has you rollerblade around shattered worlds like a post apocalyptic gazelle on wheels". Perhaps that game exists deeper within Hyper Light Breaker, but during my 20 minutes with the game at GDC, I found myself stopping and starting and struggling to build momentum using a combat system that felt both deliberately challenging and stilted.

Detective Edward Carnby looks very different these days, and not only because he's made of a lot more polygons. Gone are the professorial waistcoat and bow tie of his angular 1992 incarnation, replaced instead by the grubby suit of a life-bruised 1930s noir PI, complete with hipflask of brandy for when the stress of being unaccompanied with the lights out gets too much.

Carnby isn't the only one who's transformed in this reboot of Alone in the Dark, the classic survival horror avant la lettre, either. Veterans will find plenty of callbacks and familiar names as they poke around its Louisiana manor house – talk of the Pregzt Shipping Company might raise an eyebrow, for instance, as may the gnarled tree filling much of the conservatory. But like these, everything here is remixed, rewritten, relocated. Indeed, Decerto house is no longer empty but a 'home for the mentally fatigued', while player characters Carnby and Emily Hartwood now arrive together, since she's hired him to help check on her uncle, a long-term resident who may be in danger.

Digimon Adventure 02 Paildramon Figure-rise Standard Amplified model kit

Bandai Spirits has revealed that it will release a plastic model kit of Paildramon from Digimon Adventure 02. The Figure-rise Standard Amplified Paildramon kit will be available in September 2024 with a price tag of 5,500 yen (~$36.54). [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]

The company will pay close attention to the Digimon's body details in this model kit. Its black parts will receive gloss injections to show the contrast between the organic and mechanical parts. Its tail will also be easily posable by inserting lead wire.

This model kit will also have a couple of original gimmicks. The owner can extend the Desperado Blasters and even combine both weapons. They will also be able to simulate spikes shooting from Paildramon's arms by using the provided lead wires.

Bandai Spirits also shared several sample images featuring a CG version of the upcoming plastic model kit:

Paildramon is a Perfect / Ultimate stage Digimon generated from a Jogress / DNA Digivolution between Daisuke's (Davis') ExVeemon and Ken's Stingmon. Bandai has also previously revealed D-3 Digivice replicas modeled after both key characters from the 2000 sequel to Digimon Adventure, which are due for release in March 2024.

FFXIV Patch Notes for 6.58 Go Over Paladin and Raid Changes

Square Enix teased the 6.58 update for FFXIV at the beginning of March 2024, and now the patch and notes for it are live on the Lodestone. There are major content additions, but things like Raids and Trials and the Paladin FFXIV PvP action changes did come up in this update.

First, there were a number of changes to help improve the experience for certain Raids and Trials in FFXIV, as well as some adjustments to make things easier to find. Here's a list going over some of the changes in the patch notes.

  • Abyssal Fracture (Extreme): Now found in Duty Finder. Lynx of Abyssal Grief Flute drop rate is higher. (The notes say that needs 99 Voidvessel Totems.)
  • Anabaseios: The Twelfth Circle: Unsung Blades of Anabaseios weekly restriction removed.
  • Pandæmonium: Anabaseios (Savage): 15% increase to max HP, damage, and healing Echo strength.
  • Thaleia: Weekly limits on coins and treasure coffers' rewards removed.

In addition, people will have an easier time getting Divine Solvent. The Radz-at-Han NPC Nesvaaz now sells it for Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thaleia Coins. You'll find the person at X:10.6 Y:10.0.

As for the Paladin, five actions in FFXIV changed according to the patch notes for 6.58. Here are the exact alterations, according to Square Enix:

  • Blade of Faith: Damage potency has been increased from 6,000 to 7,000.
  • Blade of Truth: Damage potency has been increased from 7,000 to 8,000.
  • Blade of Valor: Damage potency has been increased from 8,000 to 9,000.
  • Confiteor: Damage potency has been increased from 8,000 to 12,000.
  • Holy Sheltron: The barrier effect duration has been reduced from 5 seconds to 4 seconds. The barrier potency has been reduced from 12,000 to 8,000. The unaspected damage dealt to nearby enemies when the effect expires has been increased from 100% of the remaining barrier potency to 150%. The Knight's Resolve effect duration has been reduced from 10 seconds to 8 seconds.

There's also a debuff in effect for the Dancer. Honing Ovation's attack and barrier potency is decreased by 1,000 for Acclaim stacks. So for example, before if it was 2,000, now it will be 1,000. Or if you had five stacks and it was 6,000 before, it will be 5,000 now.

Final Fantasy XIV is available on the PS4, PS5, and PC. The FFXIV Xbox Series X version will launch on March 21, 2024. Dawntrail will arrive in Summer 2024, with more news on that coming at PAX East 2024.

New Stardew Valley Farm Type Revealed, Patch Release Time Suggested

Eric "Concerned Ape" Barone revealed the new Stardew Valley farm type will be the Meadowlands Farm ahead of the 1.6 patch release. The developer also confirmed that the update will arrive during the day on Pacific Time, so he can be around when it happens.

First, the update on the type of new farm in Stardew Valley appeared as part of Concerned Ape's 1.6 patch notes teases. It clarified that this will be a type of farm someone may want to pick if they enjoy raising animals and ranching. This is because it starts with a chicken coop that has two chickens and grass around to feed them.

https://twitter.com/ConcernedApe/status/1769772266227671525

This is one of many details about the update before its arrival. For example, one of the other teases noted that people will be able to drink mayonnaise going forward. Also, items in containers will match the color of the substance inside.

As for the Stardew Valley patch release time for 1.6, Concerned Ape noted it will happen during the day and on Pacific Time. When someone asked if it would have happened at midnight on March 19, 2024, the developer said no. The notices on social media also confirmed that the update would appear for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs all at the same time. This is apparently going to be between 9am-12pm PT, which is 12pm-3pm ET.

Review Alone in the Dark Can't Avoid the Curse of Its Name

I had been cautiously optimistic about the new Alone in the Dark reboot. The announcement of Amnesia and Soma writer Mikael Hedberg working as creative director and writer for the game sounded promising, and the new meta-textual take on the original 1992 game got me interested in what could come out of this. Sadly, the second attempt to revive the franchise fails to deliver on both the narrative and gameplay aspects, with a mostly forgettable survival horror adventure that barely holds up in more ways than one.

The story of the Alone in the Dark reboot takes protagonists Emily Hartwood and private detective Edward Carnby to investigate Derceto Manor after Emily receives a strange letter from her uncle Jeremy Hartwood. It warned her to stay away from the manor and to not look for him. The letter itself is a callback to the original 1992 Alone in the Dark, which kickstarted the plot of the game. The difference between these two stories is that Jeremy is already dead in the 1992 release, whereas in the new 2024 reboot he's alive and playing a more active role. The stakes are set immediately, and the angle of this premise takes a familiar meta-narrative approach that we have seen in recent years in games like FFVII Remake and FFVII Rebirth, where knowledge of the original game is rewarded with more than references.

However, this is all the story offers in terms of interesting concepts. While Alone in the Dark is supposed to follow themes of predestination and plays with the idea of analyzing the original text in a more modern perspective, during the entire game there is never an attempt at saying anything at all. It only vaguely gestures at ideas that never get explored. This was a major letdown for me, especially considering my expectations regarding the story and narrative.

Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Pieces Interactive repeatedly stated that understanding the whole story of the game will take at least two playthroughs, one with each playable character. However, in the roughly 6 to 8 hours it takes to complete one single playthrough, you will get as much narrative as this game offers. Playing Emily or Edward only affects how many bullets your starting pistol holds and one single short level in the later parts of the game. Most scenes and interactions with the characters of Derceto will change depending on which character you play, but they all follow the same exact plot beats and take you through mostly the same structure. This wouldn't be so bad if exploration of Derceto Manor was any different between characters, or your choices in different playthroughs changed the way you interact with the manor in significant ways. While the new Alone in the Dark was directly inspired by titles like the Resident Evil 2 remake, this barebones approach makes second runs with another character tedious and repetitive.

At least exploring Derceto is fun during a first run. The mansion offers some fun and interesting puzzles, and it's clear that there was an honest effort to replicate a modern survival horror mansion. The developers also put a lot of effort into filling the world with plenty of files and supporting text that fleshes out the world of the game. However, it can be frustrating to find various files in a row that contain walls of text of up to 6 pages. There's not enough playing for how much text and pauses to read inconsequential text there are. Even more so when the main plot and narrative of the game is so thinly stretched, and cutscenes and events happen so rarely. The main plot and characters of Alone in the Dark feel underwritten, while the supporting text and lore files are long-winded. Characters enter scenes spouting some cryptic dialogue and then leave without much sense nor reason, only to provide a vague sense of mystery. These characters, as well as Emily and Edward's personal stories, amount to very little by the end of the game and don't change anything meaningfully.

The layout of Derceto starts out interesting, but quickly evolves into a sort of hub world where you do puzzles and unlock more linear levels. It is during these levels that you encounter enemies and experience combat. Gunplay is mostly decent and responsive, and weapons have considerable power. However, melee combat is clunky and frustrating. Even though there are plenty of different melee weapons, they never felt distinct. Enemy AI is pretty basic and it is extremely easy to cheese enemies and looping them to finish them with little effort. There's some enemy variety, but all it changes is the way they attack. You either have normal monsters that attack with melee attacks at slightly different ranges, bugs that fly, enemies that puke acid at you, among others. Other than their methods of inflicting violence and their varied designs, they don't shake things up much. Same goes for the different weapons you get. You have three different guns, a starting pistol, a shotgun, and a tommy gun. You also get a flare gun in the last level of the game, but this is more of a puzzle item than a weapon.

Alongside clues and lore files, Lagniappes are the main collectible in the game. These are used to unlock even more lore and text files, as well as to unlock the cabinet for the shotgun early on in the game. Another important use of the Lagniappes is unlocking new endings. I wish I could speak about the alternate endings, but I unfortunately experienced a bug that deleted all of the Lagniappes that I had collected in my first run with Edward, leaving me with only 4 or 5 collectables in the last scene with Emily. While this bug was the biggest I encountered, it was not the only one.

Emily and Edward will oftentimes get stuck on invisible collision (enough to be a noticeable problem), which forced me to reload a recent checkpoint. Additionally, some specific melee weapon stashes will not give you a weapon after interacting with them. Audio bugs were relatively common as well. I encountered one instance where all game audio, except minor background noise, stopped playing. In another one, all audio became bass-boosted and voices sounded oddly deep. Audio would also crackle often too, particularly during a couple of sections in Chapter 3 and 4. While most of these can be fixed by restarting the game, being unable to see new endings after collecting all the required collectables was a major letdown.

What I cannot deny is that Alone in the Dark is a very good looking game. Derceto Manor is a very distinct and fun environment, and even during a second run I was able to stop and appreciate every detail of the world. Graphically speaking, the game doesn't push anything to its limit, but the art direction is definitely the strongest aspect of the game. Some of the more fantastic levels reminded me of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. The music also does a good job at helping with the atmosphere with its particular blend of dark jazz.

On the whole, Alone in the Dark is another derivative and bland entry in the survival horror genre. There is some fun to be had exploring Derceto Manor. Combat is bland and generic, but could be somewhat serviceable if it was supporting an interesting narrative. However, the story is mostly non-existent and it fails to do anything with the themes it attempts to look at. To make matters worse, the abundant bugs and glitches present in the game that were not disclosed as known issues muddied any enjoyment I had with this game.

Alone in the Dark will come out for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam on March 20, 2024.
