Dragon Age The Veilguard confirms tactical combat ability limitations

It must be very difficult to be making a follow up game for a series that's become legendary. You can't just make more of the same, because times have changed and so have tasted. You can't alter too much because you'll alienate the core fanbase who've been with you since the start. That's the unenviable position Dragon Age The Veilguard finds itself in and it's taking some bold moves that might pay off - or might make people very angry indeed.

30 years later, the seriously dark, bizarre Drowned God resurfaces

What's the scariest game you've ever played? Resident Evil, when the dogs first jump through the window. Silent Hill, and the opening section with the chain-link fence and the wheelchair. There's Amnesia, Alien Isolation, the Ravenholm section from Half-Life 2. But there's one forgotten PC game, from the same golden era as Myst, Riven, and Monkey Island, that is perhaps creepier - or at least stranger - than any other. Filled with esoteric and fastidiously detailed artwork, outlandish theories about the nature of reality, and one of the bleakest narratives in game history, after 30 years of silence, Drowned God has suddenly resurfaced.

Our Adventurer Guild is cheerfully simple in appearance, and its turn-based fights and griddy missions establish its parts at once as familiar, potentially even by-the-numbers. But those parts are arranged into an original and deceptively detailed mercenary management game that got harder to put down the longer I played.

Every so often in the ignoble craft of james gournalism you stumble on a game that reminds you why you got into this weird and silly trade, a game that slices through the phantasmagorical mulch of a million Summer Game Fest announcements and clears the portals of the brain. It seems mad to think of Kanitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess this way, given that on some level, it is a tower defence game. Tower defence! The archetypal browser-based strategy experience and darling of emerging smartphones. The great-uncle once-removed of today's idle clickers. Without meaning any disrespect to those currently working in the genre, which I've had a tonne of fun with, when's the last time you were seriously excited by tower defence? As of this week, I am seriously excited by tower defence, because Path Of The Goddess has captured my imagination. It's a stately, beautiful thing. I had a go at this year's Keighleycon, and it's one of two games at the show I wanted to carry on playing once my time was up. Thank goodness it's out (on Steam and the Xbox store) in just a month or so's time.

delicious in dungeon perfume

Scently announced a collection inspired by the anime Delicious in Dungeon, and it will release four unique image perfumes inspired by characters from the series. These exclusive scents debuted on the company's official website on June 14, 2024.

The perfumes are inspired around the main cast of characters and moments from episodes of Delicious in Dungeon. Each scent also comes in a special edition that includes an acrylic stand for display. The special editions are priced at 5,980 yen (approximately $54 USD) plus 500 yen ($5 USD) for shipping, while the regular editions are priced at 3,980 yen (approximately $36 USD) plus 500 yen for shipping.

Here are the official descriptions for each of the four perfumes. Each one is 10mL.

  • Scent of Aquatic Horse: Features a clean, fresh scent of White Lily, Nemesia, and Sweet Alyssum, inspired by Marcille's soap-making efforts.
  • Scent of Dryad's Flowers: Offers a sweet and seductive heliotrope fragrance, coupled with the mellow scent of honey and a gentle floral touch.
  • Scent of the Golem Field: Combines woody balsam, patchouli, and myrrh, reflecting the essence of a farming golem.
  • Scent of the Red Dragon: Evokes the aroma of amber, leather, and other wild ingredients, inspired by the dragon's fierce presence.

And here's the official art for each of the perfumes, which also includes a look at the acrylic stands that comes with the special editions.

Orders will be shipped four to five weeks after being ordered, with potential variations depending on order volume.

The Delicious in Dungeon anime is streaming on Netflix, and season 2 is in development. The manga is handled by Yen Press outside Japan. The Scently perfumes inspired by the series will be available to buy until August 31, 2024

Megaton Musashi W: Wired is much more enjoyable than I expected, and I'm genuinely surprised more people aren't excited about it.

It's been a long time since we've seen Level-5 in full force! It suddenly bringing up its Level-5 Vision events in 2023 and 2024 were welcome news, even if many of the games ended up delayed. Megaton Musashi W: Wired is one of the ones that did roll out as expected and now that I've played it, I'm frankly a bit shocked more people aren't talking about it. While you can see the remaining Megaton Musashi X free-to-play elements, such as currencies and login rewards, it's completely compelling.

A part of this is due to a shockingly strong story with fantastic localization. Yamato Ichidaji is an orphan who, as the game begins, is getting in a fight with another delinquent named Ryugo Nijikata and his crew. When the police roll up, he's jailed. Fellow classmate Teru Asami bails him out and promptly has Yamato and Ryugo get involved in a fight where they need to fight his robots together. It's then they learn the shocking truth about the nature of their world.

Aliens invaded. 99% of the world's population are gone, the planet's wrecked, and most of the people in their town had their memories wiped when moved to this last bastion of humanity. Akagicho is actually in Shelter Ixia, and Teru is part of a group called Oblivion Bay that sends Rogue mech pilots out to safeguard and attempt to survive against the invading Draktors. Yamato's memory being restored explains what really happened to his sister and parents, and a sudden Draktor attack means he heads out with Teru and Ryugo on their first fight.

While there are some pacing issues with the story in Megaton Musashi W: Wired, especially as it can feel like Level-5 is holding our hands a little too tightly at some parts when sending us around during some parts, it's genuinely fascinating! While there are definite Draktor enemies, the nature of certain characters their and their goals show that it's a complex situation and some of those folks aren't "evil." The cast of Rogue pilots end up being pretty interesting as well. I got invested in most of their stories, and the ones I didn't connect with as much usually ended up that way because they didn't get enough attention during the course of the adventure. Also, even NPCs are fun, and I'd talk to citizens for flavor text because their names and asides were genuinely clever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mEq_N0oWbQ&t=1s&ab_channel=LEVEL5ch%E3%80%90%E5%85%AC%E5%BC%8F%E3%80%91

The general progression here involves going through part of the story, heading out on missions tied to the campaign, so you can keep progressing. If you start to hit walls due to difficulty, you take side quests to earn additional parts for your Rogue mech. This means getting different parts — which do change how your unit looks — or specific weapons. Fights are action beat'em ups against Draktor foes across a ruined Earth's maps, with special abilities that can be triggered and skills with cooldowns. Repeating fights is encouraged, as you can get materials to build up the skill tree or additional parts to improve your mech. I didn't always feel like this was necessary, even though exploiting enemies' weaknesses is great and needed, because the general difficulty of the campaign quests isn't too high. However, those who gain satisfaction from seeing a full set of equipment in play or collecting (like me) might find themselves driven to keep going.

During the course of the main game, the only real challenge I faced involved multiplayer. There are competitive and co-op quests in Megaton Musashi W: Wired. I was fortunate enough to have a crew to test cooperative matches out. However, the player pool is small and some of the tasks can be really difficult if you don't find others. I only got to play one competitive fight, and it didn't really stand up to the solo experience because of the trouble it took to play.

While there are some of the former free-to-play elements rearing their heads in Megaton Musashi W: Wired, they exist in a way that doesn't feel like it invades the overall experience. If you play every day, you get login rewards. There is a battle pass, but since it involved things you can earn for free by playing or cosmetics, it didn't feel like it took away from it. I almost wonder if some of the story elements that felt a bit like I was railroaded into things and the pacing at points were also consequences of those types of limitations too.

What I did appreciate is that even with its history, Megaton Musashi W: Wired looks great. The animated segments are fantastic. The battles involving Rogues in the field are clear and handled well. The 2D segments that explore the town generally look good as well. The only quibble I have is that some of the 2D character animations really make it seem evident that they have fixed "joints," which detract a bit from the experience.

Megaton Musashi W: Wired is much more enjoyable than I expected, and I'm genuinely surprised more people aren't excited about it. The story is interesting and really goes some places. The execution is a bit sound, though it plays it easy at times with the difficulty. The remaining remnants from its free-to-play roots aren't too pervasive or invasive. Plus the gameplay loop of going through the story, running and rerunning missions for parts, and taking on fights so you can learn and see more is fulfilling. It makes me hopeful for the future of Level-5 games.

Megaton Musashi W: Wired is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. The anime is on Crunchyroll.

Bishoujo Darkstalkers, Transformers, and Star Trek Exclusive Figures at Anime Expo

Kotobukiya announced its three exclusive Anime Expo 2024 figures, and they are Bishoujo Darkstalkers, Transformers, and Star Trek variants. They involve a new color for Lilith, a Cliff Jumper version of Bumblebee, and a Medical Officer alt.

The cheapest of the three figures is the Star Trek Bishoujo Medical Officer. She costs $129.99. She has blonde hair pulled into a ponytail and held by a bow, is using a tricorder, and wears a blue Medical Officer dress uniform. She joins the existing Science Officer and Operation Officer Uhura.

Slightly more expensive is the Darkstalkers Lilith Bishoujo figure variant. The original one launched in November 2022. This one shares Morrigan's color scheme and costs $139.99.

Finally, the Bishoujo Transformers Cliff Jumper figure is the most expensive of the three. She's based on the Bumblebee one that's already available. It's basically red and grey instead of yellow and black. That costs $149.99.

Here's how all three will look:

All three will be sold at Kotobukiya's booth, which is 1706, between July 4-7, 2024. Each day, a set number of each of the three figures is being sold. Visiting the booth will also give you a chance to get a $14.99 Kaiju No 8 pin set or pick up free Bishoujo trading cards.

Anime Expo is July 4-7, 2024, and it is held at the  Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.

Honkai: Star Rail Imaginary Harmony Trailblazer Early Unlock Explained

In the 2.2 Honkai: Star Rail update, the Imaginary Harmony Trailblazer debuted, and in 2.3 HoYoVerse will add a way to unlock it early for people who aren't that far along in the story. Ahead of the patch on June 19, 2024, the developer explained when and how this unlock will work.

Typically, someone needs to basically nearly beat the Honkai: Star Rail Penacony storyline to unlock the Imaginary Harmony Trailblazer after 2.2. It's a part of the "Beauty and Destruction" Trailblaze Mission. Once 2.3 arrives, someone needs to finish "Jarilo-VI - The Return" to get the option to unlock this new path and element. You can then go into the Event Menu and select "When Charmony Rings Out..." to get the new option for the character.

HoYoVerse also confirmed people who did already complete the 2.2 Penacony Trailblaze Mission will get their own reward. If they go to that area of the Event Menu, they will get a Shadow of Harmony item. They can use this to unlock an Eidolon for that path for their Trailblazer. Likewise, once people who claimed the early unlock for the Harmony Imaginary character reach that "Beauty and Destruction" section, they will get the Shadow of Harmony as well.

As a reminder, the Harmony Imaginary Trailblazer in Honkai: Star Rail helps with increasing damage. Its standard Skill hits multiple enemies with Imaginary damage. However, its Ultimate applies the Backup Dancer effect to all allies for a limited time that allows them to hit all enemies whose weakness is broken a second time when they attack.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the 2.3 update launches on June 19, 2024.

fate/grand order watches

Aniplex will re-run the Fate/Grand Order Seiko watches for a limited time. Each watch costs between 45,000 to 48,000 JPY ($286.10 to $305.20).

All of the watches will re-run for a limited time. When Seiko and Aniplex released them at first, they came out at different times. For example, the Artoria Caster watch came out in 2021 and the Jeanne d'Arc Alter one was in 2022.

The Fate/Grand Order watches that are available are:

  • Abigail Williams
  • Artoria (Caster)
  • Artoria (Saber)
  • Ereshkigal
  • Gilgamesh (Archer)
  • Jeanne d'Arc Alter (Avenger)
  • Katsushika Hokusai (Foreigner)
  • Mash Kyrielight
  • Miyamoto Musashi (Saber)
  • Ozymandias
  • Scathach (Lancer)
  • Sengo Muramasa

These watches tend to use the character's color scheme and motifs for the designs. For example, Musashi's swords are the hands of the watch and the inside of the strap uses the same design as Musashi's obi. Meanwhile, the Ozymandias watch (which is for women) uses gold and blue. The gold is for him being the sun king and the blue is to depict the Egyptian night sky. On the face, there are three cats, which are supposed to be his sphinxes.

Pre-orders are open from June 14 to June 30, 2024. They'll come out some time after late August 2024. The Aniplex store does not offer international shipping.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices.

Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers Anime Adaptation Announced

Arc System Works announced the development of Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers, an anime adaptation based on the latest entry in the fighting game series. A key visual art was revealed featuring Sol Badguy and Sin Kyske, as well as an unknown new female character.

Note: The story includes minor spoilers for the plot of Guilty Gear Strive.

The first teaser trailer for the upcoming Guilty Gear Strive anime series, as well as a panel session with GGST Producer Ken Miyauchi, anime series composer Norimitsu Kaiho, and anime associate producer Seiji Mizushima will be held at the Anime Expo 2024 event, which will be held between July 4-7, 2024 in Los Angeles.

At the time of writing, it is unknown if the anime will be a retelling of the latest game in the series, or if it will feature an original story that follows the ending of the latest video game. However, the new key visual depicts Sol Badguy without wearing his Gear Cell Suppressor bandana as he was seen at the end of Guilty Gear Strive, which might hint towards the anime adaptation possibly being a sequel.

You can check out the key visual in more detail here:

Sanzigen Studios will produce the Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers anime adaptation, and Shigeru Morikawa will be in charge of directing. Sanzigen Studios previously worked on the "Find Your One Way" music video for Sol Badguy in Guilty Gear Strive. Meanwhile, Morikawa has most recently directed the Argonavis the Movie: Axia.

The Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers anime series is currently in development with no known release date. Guilty Gear Strive is readily available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Windows PC, and Slayer is the latest DLC character to appear.

If there are two JRPG series that captivate me more than any others, one of them is absolutely The Legend of Heroes. Ever since I first played the iconic Trails in the Sky, I adored almost every entry in this series. Fortunately, if my recent demo experience is anything to go by, Trails through Daybreak feels like another win for Falcom and NIS America.

If you didn't know, a free Switch and PS4 demo is out right now for The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak. It comes with the ability to check out the prologue on Switch or all the way through the first chapter on PS4, with saves transferring to the full game. I checked out the latter for a quite hefty trial that lasted almost 10 hours.

Screenshot by Siliconera

While it may not be the best place to start the series as a newcomer, it is the closest in quite some time. Trails through Daybreak starts an entirely new arc in the previously unvisited nation of the Calvard Republic. Players take on the role of Van Arkride, a sort of charming rogue and morally gray version of a Bracer.

I already played all of Chapter 1 in Japanese while starting to learn the language, so it was fun to compare the localization. As always, the team is on point by including elements like great innuendos and timely jokes, though I will say the usually excellent English voice acting strangely feels like it took a dip in this installment. There are still some standouts, such as side character Marielle, but even some of the core cast may take some time to warm up to.

Outside of that, this already feels like another Falcom slam dunk. There is something to be said about how brilliant the developer's city and world design is. Trails through Daybreak is yet another testament to that with the capital city of Edith. Each of the districts feels so distinct due to the style and atmosphere. For example, there is the relaxed and brick-laden Riverside, found alongside the thriving and modern Central Station.

Exploring the city of Edith, completing Spriggan requests, and talking to the townsfolk just feels so natural. Better yet, there are even rural areas in Chapter 1 for a nice break from the hustle and bustle. This will all feel familiar to anyone who played the Crossbell or Erebonia Trails games. When it comes to combat though, this game actually radically changes this aspect.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The Trails through Daybreak features a fascinating and almost ground-breaking hybrid combat. The usual active turn-based system still exists. Here, players move around the battlefield on their turn, within a certain range, to execute an attack, skill, or craft.

However, you don't have to fight in turn-based mode if you don't want to. There is a simplistic hack-and-slash variant available as well. While not great for larger enemies or even possible in boss battles, this speeds up the combat even further. Better yet, the two even work in tandem. You can weaken a foe or even stun them in the action mode before switching to the usual turn-based affair to finish them off.

It is an engaging and fascinating system. While I would like more depth in the action combat, it works well enough, including even with a dodge mechanic. That said, outside of this, I am not a huge fan of the combat changes. The new system for link attacks is a bit awkward. Before, you would pick a partner to link with and they would follow up with additional attacks after a critical hit and all that.

However, this version limits links (called SLCMs) to being right next to someone. They are more flexible this way since Van, Agnes, and the others can link up with anyone at any time now. However, it somewhat felt like I was forced to go out of my way to move characters next to one another to gain a follow-up attack.

Screenshot by Siliconera

This new link system got especially annoying in boss battles. I felt like I had to move up my ranged characters like Agnes to be next to my melee fighter in Van. This put the ranged characters in more unnecessary danger just for a linked combo. It is strange since it wasn't like this in past games.

Outside of that, though, this is by far the most fluid and fast the turn-based combat has been in the series. I was blasting through most fights in well under a minute with almost no issue. Even the trickier and lengthier boss fights felt much more manageable in terms of time now.

When not in dungeons, players have the ability to complete various Spriggan requests. These are similar to the side quests and Bracer requests from past games but with a twist. Van is a much shadier person than past protagonists like Rean and Lloyd, and it shows in his requests.

He has an alignment system revolving around Law, Chaos, and Gray. Each request he does adds points to each one. In addition, there are the occasional choices you can make that level up Van's Law, Chaos, and Gray attributes. Most notably, these all level up independently, and each come with special rewards. While I know how these affect the later game from my time with the Japanese version, I won't go into that here. Regardless, this system adds an intriguing layer and makes the already well-written side quests that much more worth checking out. They are just as essential to the world and characters as the core plot.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak demo preview

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak feels like another must-play JRPG from Falcom, based on the demo preview. It is almost a solid starting point for newcomers with an almost entirely fresh cast of characters. It also takes place in the new locale of the Calvard Republic, which is already gorgeous and varied from the places I visited in the prologue and first chapter. The mix of action and turn-based combat is such a welcome move. Anyone who likes past Trails games or just JRPGs in general should check out the free demo ahead of launch.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak will release for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC on July 5, 2024. A free demo is available right now for Switch and PS4.

See FFXIV Dawntrail Allagan Tomestone of Heliometry Gear equipment

When the Final Fantasy XIV Letter from the Producer Live LXXXII got to System Adjustments, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida and Square Enix General Manager of Community & Service Division Toshio "Foxclon" Murouchi went over the new FFXIV Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry and the equipment and gear people can get from them. In total, Yoshida revealed nine of the new sets people can get to wear or even use as glamour.

Previously, Square Enix went over how the Allagan Tomestones of Causality and Comedy would be leaving, and the Allagan Tomestones of Aesthetics and Heliometry will appear following FFXIV Dawntrail for new gear and equipment. The Aesthetics ones will be immediately available after 7.0. However, the Heliometry ones won't show up until 7.05.

After discussing the additions, Yoshida shared images of some of the equipment FFXIV Dawntrail players will be able to get when they exchange Allagan Tomestones of Heliometry for gear. Nine pieces of art were shared, showing things for folks like Black Mages, Dragoons, Pictomancers, and Reapers.

Other topics came up other than Allagan Tomestones during the System Adjustments portion of the discussion. People will be able to hold 1,500 Bicolor Gemstones, instead of only 1,000. The Duty List will also show emotes and delivery item recipes. Glasses will be categorized as facewear going forward too.

You will be able to hide nearby players when near an NPC or item with quest icon, with default, when near quest NPCs, or when interacting with quest NPCs as options. Your party member allies will be able to be shown as an option, but any friends in your party won't be shown. A slide showed the three options in action.

Yoshida also spoke a lot about the dyeing adjustments. These will let you have two on one piece of gear, and there will be more items that support that option. The 7.0 and beyond equipment will all support two dye slots. Greater support may not come until 7.04. You can also set "favored dye" or "previously applied dyes" as an option. Yoshida said this could apply to setting a favorite color as a "saved" favorite.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Dawntrail expansion will arrive on July 2, 2024
