PCGamesN Thursday, August 29, 2024 3:38 PM Gundam has been a massively popular franchise for close to 50 years now, with torrents of comics and TV shows coming out consistently. It's also spawned a hobby community devoted to building models of the iconic mechs designed for various series over the years, which has, in turn, inspired games like Gundam Breaker 4, a hack and slash mech game and digital robot builder that includes the action of an Armored Core 6 with the machine management of Battletech or Mechwarrior 5. And, though it only came out yesterday, the latest entry to the Breaker series is off to a great start based on player reviews and Steam charts. PCGamesN Thursday, August 29, 2024 1:32 PM Five years ago, Green Hell left Early Access on Steam and went on to become one of the most recognizable survival games to come out during an enormous wave of them. Next to the dinosaur filled Ark: Survival Evolved, the watery depths of Subnautica, and the frozen vistas of The Long Dark, Green Hell stuck out for its depiction of life in a stretch of Amazonian jungle. Its creator, Creepy Jar, has stuck with the project in the time since, continuing to add to the game with a series of improvements and additions that will now, finally, come to an end with next week's final update. |

PCGamesN Thursday, August 29, 2024 12:23 PM What are the best sandbox games? Sandbox games are difficult to nail down, as the sandbox style is spread across countless genres with disparate mechanics and settings. But all sandboxes share a common trait: freedom. Whether it's creating a whole world or building up a gang of criminals across a city, sandbox games leave most of the agency up to the player. They are universes to be experienced at a pace not dictated by developers. Some of the best PC games of all time are those that allow total player freedom, but there needs to be a bit of clarity when looking at what makes a great sandbox game. They have, since the days of Elite and Ultima, referred to open-world games filled with choice and diversions. But revisionist history would describe them as "games like Minecraft". For the purposes of this exploration of the best of the bunch, we're taking a look at them all. We support sandbox egalitarianism. So, from the mean streets of Los Santos through the ruthless missions of Agent 47 and the stunning expanse of Eve's universe, these are the very best sandbox games on PC. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, August 29, 2024 11:16 AM The first time I encountered Jack King-Spooner's work, it was when he sent me a copy of Sluggish Morss: Pattern Circus over hospital wifi late at night. The game was a bright spot in a bad time, which might seem peculiar given that Sluggish Morss often looks like a whale's upset stomach, but it's such a feverishly inventive creation. It blew the dust from my synapses. The same appears true of King-Spooner's upcoming Judero, on which he is collaborating with Soul Searching developer Talha Kaya. It casts you as a "pagan seer" armed with a big stick, who is searching the mythical Scottish borderlands for evil creatures to clobber. It looks cheerier and airier than Sluggish Morss, with a more overt emphasis on mechanics such as combat, but it has the same pickled 3am energy to it. It's also now got a release date - 16th September - and a new trailer below. |

Oh boy, does Arco make me sad. Part of it stems from the subject matter, which is handled well and forces you to think about the price and victims of colonialism and exploitation. But it's also heartbreaking to play an absolutely excellent gem of a Panic game, then see members of the development team mentioning the title selling badly and going unnoticed. Here's hoping that, after you read my review, you'll see what I see about it and consider giving it a chance.
Arco begins with an Iyo family heading to The Sacred Tree on a pilgrimage to leave offerings. It's honestly quite peaceful. Tecolotl helps his grandfather with an errand. He trains with his father, which acts as a tutorial to get us accustomed to an innovative and thoughtful combat system. He fights some wildlife for a lizard egg to trade for a rattlesnake's rattle as an offering. But there are unknown people around the Sacred Tree they are there to visit, which offers an ominous insight into what is happening to the land and community around them.
Rather than limit you to one viewpoint, Arco shifts between different characters. So right as you begin to connect with Teco, a new chapter begins and you're following Tizo. He's a man with a capital-P past who is now wandering, looking for work. After taking on a job from an old friend, he's finds himself investigating the involvement of "Newcomers" like the Red Company, invaders colonizing, polluting, and conquering the area, in a massacre. From there, you get insight into the Kanek way of life, following a would-be warrior named Itzae determined to prove herself. Afur and Chio, a pair of twin Tuag traders who end up unexpectedly getting into more trouble and discovering more mysteries after they unload items they stole from the Termano at a village. Each story is incredibly well told, with protagonists and NPCs alike that stand out. Especially when all of the threads you explored in the early acts come together.
As you go through all of these stories, you'll eventually get opportunities to make decisions. Some of these seem clear-cut, but others are morally grey and could lead to heartbreak later on in the story. Depending on your decisions, your guilt will increase. Among other influences, this has a tangible effect on the battlefield. You'll see actual ghosts as you're haunted by your choice, getting in your way and perhaps forcing you to make tactical choices you wouldn't or accept consequences if the only way to success is through them. Do you show mercy and take someone along, knowing it is very likely they will betray you? Do you deny aid and live with the guilt, knowing you probably could have afforded to spare items and help.
Speaking of tactics, Arco is a turn-based strategy game that feels incredibly active and thrilling. You can only equip a handful of actions to each character, with more learned as they gain experience from fights. When a battle begins, your goal is to dodge damage from melee attacks or ranged weapons like guns, while also properly positioning yourself, restoring your points for actions, and also moving in such a way that you're able to intercept opponents. Before each "round," an icon will appear over the enemies' heads to suggest what they'll do next. If it involves movement, you can hover over that one to see where they will go.
Your task if to properly react for each turn. So if you see a number of enemies are all going to fire their guns at you during one turn, you can use the dash to evade. Then, the next turn when they are presumably reloading, you could ideally unleash your own ranged attack or get close enough for a melee hit. If an enemy is going to use a melee attack and you are both close enough and have enough energy, you may be able to use one of your own to keep that from happening and damage them. If you equipped an item before the fight, you may be able to use it for AOE damage to hit many foes at once. Plus, you need to anticipate if additional waves show up. It makes you think.
So do the hidden elements of Arco. You can play through the game in a straightforward way. However, there are also sidequests to take, additional spots to visit, and more to do. That is, if you spend the time wandering around, investigating locations, and talking to people. This is one of those games that feels like a good investment, as I always felt rewarded by those additional moments, even if it led to more guilt.
For as much as I love all of these other elements of Arco, I also can't get over how striking and memorable its sights and sounds are. The minimalistic, sprite-based approach ends up being far more expressive than you'd expect. Homes and towns retain their identities and, in many cases, feel more vibrant due to the fact that we are taking in so much of every moment. While each area you enter is fairly small, there are those aforementioned secrets that come from exploring each corner of an area or going off the beaten path. Not to mention the music is absolutely phenomenal. It's heartfelt. It constantly suits the moment. It lends further authenticity to the regions we're exploring.
The only thing that got to me a bit with Arco involved the Switch performance. Only two issues came up, but they're ones both set to be fixed by a patch. So honestly, by the time you read this, the issue I had with one background track in Act 3 not playing properly sometimes and the game not allowing me to open the save and options menu in one single location in Act 2 could be gone.
Arco is essentially a flawless strategy game that forces you to make difficult choices in and out of battle, then live with those consequences. It's gorgeous and heartfelt. It will challenge you. It will make a region and the tribes of people living there come to life. Then, when it is over, it will leave you wondering what might have been if you made different decisions.
Arco is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

HoYoVerse announced that the Honkai: Star Rail Garden of Plenty event, which doubles the drop rate of Crimson and Golden Calyx in-game, is back effect between August 30, 2024 and September 6, 2024. As usual, it lets you get double the rewards from those battles.
Here's how the Honkai: Star Rail Garden of Plenty event works, in case you haven't used it to increase Crimson or Golden Calyx rewards before. You go to the Calyx of your choice. For the first 12 times you run it, you get double the number of rewards you typically would. This is a once-per-day offer. So each day, you get 12 chances total to get twice as many items like Character Trace Ascension Materials or Character EXP Materials.
As a note, you do need to get through the both the tutorial on Herta Space Station and reach Jarilo-VI. That's because actually taking advantage of Calyx battles is locked behind "Calyx (Golden): Bud of Memories." As long as you finished "A Grand Cool Adventure" and got to Trailblaze Level 7, you should be set.
Here's the list of all the Crimson Calyx that you can visit during the Honkai: Star Rail Garden of Plenty event for extra rewards:
You could also visit the following Golden Calyx spots:
Honkai: Star Rail is available on the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Garden of Plenty event returns August 30, 2024 and September 6, 2024. The next Special Program airs on August 30, 2024.

Remedy Entertainment has partnered with Annapurna, with a goal of potentially producing Alan Wake and Control movies and TV shows. In addition, Annapurna will be co-financing the development of Control 2, which is currently in production.
While no concrete announcements have been made for Alan Wake or Control movies or TV shows, the announcement of the partnership confirmed an interest in expanding the IPs into other mediums. In addition, Annapurna will be helping to finance and publish the sequel to Control. The sequel has been in production for a while, although Remedy have yet to release any specific details. The news comes after Epic Games executive Hector Sanchez made a move to Annapurna. Epic previously worked with Remedy on publishing Alan Wake 2.
Annapurna is an ideal partner for Remedy to cover both their goals. While Control 2 will be self-published by Remedy, funding and additional support is likely to come from the Annapurna Interactive division. The publisher is best known for releasing projects such as Stray, What Remains of Edith Finch and Outer Wilds. Most recently they've released Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Flock and Open Roads. Meanwhile, the Alan Wake and Control movies and TV shows will likely be produced under Annapurna Pictures, the film division that produced Nimona, Her and Zero Dark Thirty.
Remedy are working on a number of projects including Control 2. They are also working with Rockstar on remakes of the first two Max Payne games, along with a co-op multiplayer game known as Condor. The second DLC expansion for Alan Wake 2 is also on the way, following the release of the Night Springs DLC in June 2024.
Control and Alan Wake 2 are out now, and movies and TV shows of both are in the works. Control is available for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, while Alan Wake 2 is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Atlus has revealed new details about the towns and journey elements of Metaphor: ReFantazio. Director Katsura Hashino showed off new locations and mechanics in a showcase on the Atlus YouTube channel.
Three locations were shown off in the showcase. The first of these was Martira, one of the first towns available in Metaphor: ReFantazio, located in the countryside. Other locations included Port Brilehaven, a port town surrounded by mysterious balls of water, and Virga Island, a tropical setting. There were also glimpses of a main quest dungeon set inside the belly of a giant worm. The showcase also detailed how the player gets around in the game. This requires a vehicle known as a gauntlet runner, which the player will spend a lot of time on.
Each of the towns in Metaphor: ReFantazio will contain its own activities for the player to complete. Martira features a bungee jump test of courage and the ability to milk cows. Port Brilehaven features a seafood restaurant where you can learn to fish, along with a coliseum. Even the gauntlet runner contains its own activities, from cooking and reading, to special activities involving allies such as weapon maintenance. These activities will improve your character's standing within the game's Royal Tournament while also building bonds with your allies.
Much like the Persona games, Metaphor: ReFantazio will require players to manage their time effectively as they move between towns. Each activity the player completes will move time forward, so they have to be aware of how much time is left in their main quest. Journeys between major locations also consume several days, although these journeys do contain their own side activities to complete such as scenic sites and combat zones. Even the worm dungeon has its own time considerations, although this is because the dungeon must be completed before the party is digested.
Finally, the showcase revealed a new party member, Eupha. She can be found in Virga Island, although details about her are being kept secret for the time being.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a new RPG from the same team as the Persona series, and shares a lot of common elements with that series. It sees you playing as a protagonist entering the Royal Tournament following the assassination of the king and a curse being placed on the prince.
Metaphor: ReFantazio releases on October 11, 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

There will also be a 5 star weapon campaign that will get us 26 of them. Brands to enhance existing equipment and new Ultimate Weapons are joining to help make your parties stronger in FFVII Ever Crisis. There will also be a Garbs of the Protectors series of draws for four weeks, with one piece of equipment being Bahamut Garb Gear for Cloud. Finally, the two new events are Battle Tower: Singularity The Maelstrom Tower Chaos of the Corrupted and The Cetra's Story: Birth of the Destroyer.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical announced a new game that acts as an ad for CalorieMate called CalorieMate Liquid for Game Creators. It is "coming soon" to Steam and turns players into a can of CalorieMate Liquid Fruit Mix trying to reach a "creator." The product page also said Adobe Stock AI-generated images are used for in-game textures.
There's no trailer for CalorieMate Liquid for Game Creators yet, but the screenshots offer an idea of how it will work. Players control the can and need to get it to the person before it gets warm. In the upper right corner, you can track the temperature in Celsius before it becomes "no good." Along the way, hazards like cats, household items, and video game characters brought to life appear.
Here's a look at the first five images shared with us on Steam.
It isn't uncommon for these sorts of game advertisements to appear. For example, one of the more famous icons also based on a drink is Pepsiman, which inspired spin-offs like Vitamin Girl. Burger King also sold the Xbox games Big Bumpin, Pocketbike Racer, and Sneak King.
CalorieMate Liquid for Game Creators is in development for PCs via Steam.

The first That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles DLC debuted, and it brings Hinata Sakaguchi from TenSura to the game. It is available alone for $6.99 or in the $19.99 Season Pass, and Bandai Namco shared a trailer to help people see how she fights.
Hinata is a member of the Western Holy Church's knights and another person who, like Rimuru, originally came from the real world. Her DLC is called "A Strange Fate." The two main draws are the ability to use Hinata as a playable character, as well as go through the new " A Strange Fate" storyline. 10 sidequests appear in the add-on, as do seven new buildings to place in town. The new places are a 3-Star Luxury Restaurant, Chateau Rimuru, Dryad Flower Shop, Super Rimuloo, Swords of Tempest, Tempest Herbs, and Tempest Museum.
Here is the full list of new sidequests in the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Hinata DLC:
The teaser trailer for the DLC is quite short, however, but it does show how Hinata Sakaguchi fights in this TenSura game. It also teases the appearances of Sumire and Rito in the "A Strange Fate" story.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Isekai Chronicles is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, the TenSura anime is on Crunchyroll, and Yen Press handles the light novel and manga.

Square Enix sent out emails to Final Fantasy XIV players letting them know the User Agreement for the MMORPG will change on September 26, 2024. Four of the sections will change and include new clarifications, and the updated user agreement is already available on the FFXIV Support Center.
Four areas experienced updates. The first section changed involves Disputes. Square Enix stated there are new clarifications in both the main statement and its subsections. For example, when compared to an older FFXIV user agreement, the 4.3 section is now "Recurring Subscription and Cancellation," rather than just "Recurring Subscription." It includes language about automatically renewing subscriptions if a credit or debit card is registered.
The Billing Procedures and Recurring Transactions is the second one changed. It seems the 4.1, 4.3, 4.4, and 4.5 sections involving subscriptions and billing all feature some additions or changes. For example, in 4.1, this is added, "All customer transactions on the Square Enix Account Management System, Mog Station, and FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store, including game subscriptions, are subject to any state or local sales tax, where applicable. Any purchases made are adjusted to include estimated sales tax based on the address registered on the account from which the purchase is made, and tax rates are subject to change according to tax law changes."
The License Limitations section also features a fairly clear change between the old FFXIV user agreement on the Support Center and the updated one for September 2024. For example, the 2.2 section on Real Money Trading Farming and Fradulent Transcations, there is a new line that states, "Further, fraudulent transactions such as purchase of optional item gift codes or illicitly obtained items through resales on unauthorized websites and unofficial reseller websites are prohibited." The Prohibited Activities language changed a bit as well.
Finally, the last addition seems to be in the General Terms section 11.2 about the warranty. It's changed from "Disclaimer of Warranties" to "Limited Warranty." There is an additional paragraph about physical media, which reads as follows:
"Notwithstanding the foregoing, Square Enix warrants to the original purchaser of the Licensed Software that the physical media containing the Licensed Software (which includes any replacement physical media provided under this Limited Warranty) will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase (the "Warranty Period"). Square Enix's entire liability and your exclusive remedy under this limited warranty shall be, at Square Enix's option, repair or replacement, without charge, of the whole or affected portion of any Licensed Software that proves to be defective in material or workmanship during this Warranty Period."
Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Square Enix announced it will be shutting down the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which means the game will end after eight years on October 30, 2024. It also stopped selling paid the paid Lapis currency both alone and in bundles on August 29, 2024.
This notice appeared on its English social media accounts for the game. However, there's no such message on the Japanese account, suggesting it will remain in service in the region. The announcement cited concerns about "maintaining the app experience" as a reason for the shutdown. However, it did note that there will still be new events running for the final two months of service.
Here is the full statement regarding the shutdown.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius featured an original story starring Grandshelt knights Rain and Lasswell, who grew up together as brothers. After meeting an amnesiac woman named Fina at the Earth Crystal, they get caught up in a worldwide adventure to fight back against the darkness. However, existing Final Fantasy characters from different entries appear as summonable units, all the way up through FFXVI. It's also known for its unusual crossovers, such as with Ariana Grande and Katy Perry.
Season 4, Chapter 13, Part 1 just began in the game. The last update brought up on social media involved Blade Breaker Esther. She's available via the Crest Pass, and a trailer showed off her electrical attacks.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is available on mobile devices, though the global version of the game available worldwide will be shutting down and end on October 30, 2024.

Despite rumblings in niche corners of the JRPG community, I didn't expect a full remake of Trails in the Sky. To be honest, I didn't even think it needed more than a port. Well, now we've officially seen The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st.
I was wrong on both counts.
Pairing the story and atmosphere of The Sky Trilogy with Trails through Daybreak's incredible gameplay? (A game I awarded a perfect score to, by the way.) Yeah, I'd consider that a welcome combo. But beyond the thrill of updated mechanics, this remake could address a critical issue with the series. Accessibility.
Trails in the Sky is the starting point for the grand overarching story of the Trails series. The only way to play the game currently is on PC. While I've always praised it, even I can admit it shows its age. This remake could open the game to an entirely new audience, making it more accessible and engaging than ever.
A huge question when a new player starts Trails is, "Where do I start?" I've long advocated for starting with Sky, despite other options. I am of the mind that you need the info and worldbuilding of Sky to process later information. However, for some people the game is just a little too old for them to get into.
There's also the matter of the games slow pace and sometimes repetitive gameplay loop. It's possible that this new Trails in the Sky remake will allow the developers to restructure some of the storytelling. Obviously without influencing the overall narrative, which should remain untouched.
This means that this game will be the definitive starting point for the trails series. And, it's welcome. The Trails in the Sky trilogy are among the best JRPGs ever made. However, it seems like many find reasons not to play them.
And I understand that, the series can feel very gatekeepy. That's something I don't ever want to come across. I love this series and want everyone to experience it. But, I also don't want people to play out of order and get spoiled. And I certainly don't want people to outright skip an incredible trilogy.
But, with the new remake there will no longer be any age on these titles. They'll be the freshest and the newest. Hopefully the slower story beats will be refined and streamlined. Also, the addition of voice acting while the originals lacked English voices will further give new players plenty to feel comfortable about.
So hopefully, when this game releases in 2025, it will end the debate on whether it's "Ok to skip Sky". Because now no one will even consider it.
