InZOI's director was disappointed the new life game isn't as silly as The Sims

The Sims has a new rival in town, and it's off to an impressive start. The first-weekend player count for Krafton's InZOI has seen the realistic life sim blow past its most senior inspiration and rival on Steam - although it's still yet to top the lifetime peak that The Sims 4 has reached on the Valve platform. Early user reviews are also strong, and there's a lot of praise for the game's impressive visuals. As game director Hyungjun 'Kjun' Kim tells me, however, that direction didn't come without its drawbacks.

I just tested the stunning Razer Minecraft keyboard, mouse, and headset

We've had a chance to play around with the Razer Minecraft PC peripheral collection, and it's even better to look at in real life than pictures you may have seen online. This is one of many recent collabs from Razer, with this one ideal for any Minecraft fan who predominantly plays on a PC.

Razer is on quite the streak when it comes to quality PC peripheral collaborations. This Minecraft deal follows the recent Kuromi and Fortnite crossovers, both of which we also went hands-on with and found to be impressive. A big aspect of these collaborations that makes them so good is the thought that goes into selecting the best products for each set. While Razer could easily just throw in the best gaming mouse or keyboard into each one and charge a massive premium, it instead has sensibly picked its more affordable gear that makes this kit a reasonable option for those buying for younger friends and family.

Dice based roguelike Die in the Dungeon expands with new boons and curses

2025 has already been a great year for roguelikes. On the action side of things, we've got the likes of Sworn, Reignbreaker, and Heroes of Hammerwatch 2. If you prefer a bit more considered strategy, there's options such as Grit and Valor 1949, Aotenjo, and Nubby's Number Factory. But when it comes to deckbuilders - or dicebuilders, in this case - Die in the Dungeon has proven itself an early frontrunner for my top games of the year. Combining a delightful pixel-art style with some really clever strategy reminiscent of genre pioneers like Dicey Dungeons and Slay the Spire, it's a surefire winner, and it just got even better.

Boomer shooter bundle gives you $174 worth of explosive FPS games for just $16

When it comes to the best FPS games, it's tough to beat the raw, unbridled action of a good boomer shooter. The genre has exploded in popularity once again in recent years, which is fantastic if you love blasting your way through hordes of foes using all manner of powerful (and increasingly bizarre) weapons. But with so much choice, it can be tough to know where to start. Fortunately, a new Humble bundle deal lets you grab some excellent picks, including hits such as Turbo Overkill and Forgive Me Father 2, for less than 10% of their combined value.

I finally played The Precinct, a new sandbox crime game where you're the cop

I'm glad I don't live in Averno City, the setting of Fallen Tree Games' The Precinct. In the two hours I spent patrolling its streets, crime was everywhere. Speeding is rampant, vandals are around every corner, and it seems like everyone is carrying an illegal firearm and likes to drink and drive. As a rookie cop, it's up to you to crack down on this crime wave and return your town to relative safety.

Hello reader who is also a reader, and welcome back to Booked For The Week - our regular Sunday chat with a selection of cool industry folks about books! I woke from a terrible nightmare last night. I'd just released a book and every three or so pages, the publisher had inserted a double page spread trying to sell the reader a wireless mouse with Minecraft movie Jack Black's gormless, gouty grin on it, turning my carefully curated atmosphere to shit! Phew. Thank goodness it was just a nightmare! Just an utter, utter nightmare.

Anyway, never mind all that. The sun is out, and books still exist and are and mostly advertisement free! Here to talk about them this week is game maker, Dicey Dungeons writer, Now Play This festival founder, and The Husbands author, Holly Gramazio! Cheers Holly! There's never a dull moment when you're playing a rogue-like (or rogue-lite) dungeon crawler. At least, there shouldn't be. The genre is filled to the brim with nonstop action experiences you can gorge on, but stand-out offers available know how to contextualize your runs into meaningful, engaging stories or settings. Hades redefined what these kinds of games could be. While many chase this new standard with similarly grim settings or serious moods, Grimoire Groves is a refreshing change. It's a solid case for delivering the promises of this genre through a much wider range of aesthetics and storytelling. However, the blooming strength of its presentation sprouts more than a few thorns that make cultivating a wholesome experience a bit of a chore.

Primrose is an upbeat and excitable witch-in-training. She has one more hurdle to cross before becoming a full-fledged sorceress: completing her apprenticeship with Lavender, an older, gentle witch who tends to her garden outside the eponymous Grimoire Groves. Upon arriving at the garden, Primrose notices its disarray. A quick trip into the forest itself reveals the Groves have been abandoned by the magical beings and special plants who used to live there. Lavender tasks Primrose with restoring the garden- and by extension the forest- to its former beauty. Bestowed with a magical watering can and a beginner level spell, Primrose must venture into the Grimoire Groves, use her plant-based magic to nurture the plant life back into the soil, and assist the residents of the forest with rebuilding their homes.

Screenshot by Siliconera

I'm a stickler for well-written, natural dialogue. When faced with a cutesy, high-energy title like Grimoire Groves, I always fear the writing is going to push it to the extreme. Situations where characters will be so impossibly sweet, or reactions intensely exaggerated, that it gives me second-hand embarrassment. I'm happy to say Grimoire Groves is remarkably even-handed in its approach. Primrose is bright and cheerful, and being easily excitable, can become equally frustrated or annoyed. Grimoire Groves is a vibrant explosion of color and adorable character designs, and balances this ambush of the senses with good comedic timing and a tinge of sarcasm. Primrose, Lavender, and the rest of the forest inhabitants had endeared me to the world I was exploring.

Despite its disarming exterior Grimoire Groves wants you to focus on the action. It only takes about 15 minutes to introduce you to its premise, some basic controls, and how to equip spells. Afterwards, it expects you to explore and discover many of its little intricacies for yourself. All runs start with choosing a biome to start your dungeon crawl in. You defeat enemies who drop important resources, encounter NPCs who might want those materials, and (maybe) fight a boss. Eventually, you return to the garden and dump everything you've collected into new spells, plants, and various shrines in need of repair. There's a wonderful combination of whimsy and pride watching the garden magically spring back to life. Every new budding plant magically whisks away weeds and bramble. Every structure repaired creates a relaxing centerpiece marking your progress.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Unfortunately, that presentation and explorative freedom can get tangled up into a confusing and, at times, plodding experience. Grimoire Groves is in 2.5D, so it uses 2D objects inside of 3D space. This allows for a distinct, pop-up book look, but creates issues during combat. The plant creatures you're "helping" into the ground have varying shapes and sizes. When fighting large groups, smaller plants can be hidden behind bigger ones, making it difficult to react to their attacks. In addition, not all enemy attacks feature the warning indicators that appear when casting your spells or entering a plant's aggro range. Paired with the sheer amount of environmental objects on-screen and the color palettes of Grimoire Groves' multiple biomes being similar to those of the plants, your overall visibility of what's going on can become very poor.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Progression through Grimoire Groves' central storyline adds a menial element to gameplay that left me a little lost on how to proceed. To unlock boss fights for each biome, you have to complete the NPC quest blocking access to its arena. This usually involves running through the forest to find specific plants, and harvesting resources from them. Finding enough materials in a single run to complete these quests isn't necessarily a guarantee. What's more, you can't bring materials from previous runs into new ones. Not unless you use a specific machine that isn't always accessible in the dungeon when you need it.

The freedom to discover things on your own makes that early-game experience a bit frustrating. For instance, I made charms to raise max health or strengthen my spells, but had no idea how to equip them. It wasn't until I finished building my first shrine that I learned shrines serve as equipment slots. This was after several hours of confusion and many failed runs, before I coincidentally built the shrine. Had I not run out of things to upgrade, it might've taken longer for me to find out. Expanding your abilities and discovering new features on your own is deeply exciting! Not so much when it causes you to miss integral features you're expected to use in order to make progress.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Despite this, Grimoire Groves offers an overall satisfying gameplay experience. With only three spell slots and great diversity in the way spells interact with enemies, there are a ton of playstyles to develop. Although it takes a bit longer than I'd like to understand what I need to do to progress and how to do it, the cute character dialogue and expanding garden still gives me a sense of accomplishment once I do. Much like gardening, Grimoire Groves requires a little patience. But once you get past that initial struggle, it's incredibly rewarding.

Grimoire Groves is available now on Steam.

A smiling warrior and an unconscious man

If you're wondering where to find the blacksmith in The First Berserker: Khazan, your question is well-founded. They're nowhere to be found at the start, and you'll find plenty of items that mention them. Thankfully, it's not too hard to unlock the blacksmith, at least by Khazan standards.

When do you unlock the blacksmith in The First Berserker: Khazan?

Unlocking crafting in First Berseker: Khazan
Screenshot by Destructoid

Players hoping to unlock the blacksmith quickly in The First Berserker: Khazan will be disappointed. You don't even meet the NPC until the fifth main story mission, Strange Stench at Skoffa Cave, where you rescue him from a huge demon spider.

A massive, demon spider boss with venomous arms
Screenshot by Destructoid

You then have to defeat the evil demon spider and talk to the blacksmith Qazumaka back in the Crevice basement, only for him to say he lost his hammer! You'll need to complete a separate mission with its own boss fight, and then you can return to the Crevice and start crafting.

Now, how long does it take to unlock the blacksmith? In my playthrough, I was hard-walled by the Embars Ruins boss for a good two hours, and the boss before Skoffa Cave took me an hour. Including a fairly thorough exploration of each level and the other boss fights, I had easily spent eight or nine hours playing before I added the blacksmith to my growing collection of allies. That number will grow or shrink depending on how much grinding you do and how long you're stuck on any of the bosses.

One final note: blacksmith Qazumaka is only available when you're in the Human Realm version of the Crevice. You'll need to travel back and forth between it and the Netherworld if you want to swap between mission areas and crafting.

How to complete the Blacksmith's Heirloom mission in The First Berserker: Khazan

The Khazan mission screen for the blacksmith unlock quest
Screenshot by Destructoid

Blacksmith's Heirloom is the name of the mission you'll need to complete to get Qazumaka's hammer and unlock crafting in the Crevice. It's a shorter mission in a separate instance of Skoffa Cave, called Spider's Tomb, on the Charnak Mountain Range travel map.

You load into the ruined mine at the start of the mission, at the Blade Nexus called Dead Spider's Lair. A Grantie Jocko gorilla-ish enemy and some monkey-like Jockos are wandering close to the Nexus, so clear them out and proceed through the doorway at the far end of the chamber.

The doorway leading deeper into a cave

More monkey enemies will climb up from the chasm in the middle of the room, and you'll notice a tougher vampire bat hanging from the ceiling on the other side of the pit. Hit the bat with a Javelin before it wakes up to drop it to the ground and stun it for a few moments.

Continue up the path to your right, then keep left through the additional monkeys and a rocky gorilla. Grab the treasure chest in the gorilla's cave, then take the path across the room up and out of the cave.

You'll arrive at the Jocko Hill Blade Nexus, where you should ignore the red items on the ground, as these are bait for Crypt Devourer worm enemies to try and eat you.

Head to your right from the Blade Nexus, clearing the Jocko enemies from the room as you go.

How to beat Bearius and unlock the blacksmith in The First Berserker: Khazan

The huge bear Bearius boss fight
Screenshot by Destructoid

Bearius, the boss of the mission, is nothing more than a boss-level bear enemy, several of which you've likely fought to this point. Besides its increased size and health bar, the only other difference between Bearius and regular bears is the damage it deals. I used armor with solid stats and was several levels above the game's recommendation, and he could still easily two-shot me with his harder-hitting swipes.

We'll go over each of Bearius's attacks below, but they should be pretty familiar if you've fought the smaller bears earlier in a playthrough.

  • Side swipe into uppercut. The right paw swipes horizontally, and the uppercut claws through the ground, sending you flying if it hits.
  • Bear hug double slash. Bearius stands up on its hind legs and spreads its arms, slashing at you for big damage when it comes down. Counts as a Burst Attack.
  • Belly flop. Looks like the bear hug grab startup, but Bearius stands a bit shorter and hunched over, slamming its bulk down for a large chunk of damage if it connects.
  • Mouth grab. This grab has Bearius extend its neck and try to grab you in its fangs. It slams the ground with its left claw after throwing you away.
  • Shoulder check. Bearius can rock back and try to knock you with its shoulder.
  • Three hit combo. Bearius slashes once with its left claws, then uses the momentum to try and hit backhand, before raising up and slamming with the left claws for the third strike.

As a beast-type enemy, Bearius's stamina does not regenerate, but it has a lot of stamina. You'll likely only deplete its bar two or three times. Once the bear's dead, climb the ladder at the back-left of the arena and speak to Hengie. After that, you can return to the Crevice.

All that's left now is to visit Qazumaka, where he'll thank you for returning his hammer and reward you with his services.
