Lost Judgment is a thrilling action game that, despite a few bumpy narrative beats, manages to reach the heights of its predecessor. The subject matter is handled well, the characters are intriguing, and as in any RGG game, beating up baddies is a total blast. If you're a Yakuza fan, you'll want to check out […]

Comedy video games. This writer's blood runs cold just to think of them. In a medium that sees you define your own pace, how can comedy possibly work without fundamentally transforming the medium from interactive to inert? The comedy and the gameplay are necessarily completely separate and so few games have managed to integrate the two in any truly impressive way just yet. Undertale, perhaps, but there's still a lot of sitting around reading dialogue in that.
UnMetal is... a comedy video game. A parody, if you will, and unfortunately not the Parodius kind. What we've got here is an affectionate ribbing of gaming in general, presented in the guise of a stealth game akin to the original MSX Metal Gear, being a quasi-top-down sorta-stealth game. We say "sorta" because the enemies in UnMetal are dumber than a box of particularly uneducated rocks, but that isn't really the point. In fact, playing this thing barely seems to be the point — it's so fragmented in its style that it almost feels like a minigame collection. You jump from cutscene to marginal exploration to adventure game-style item-combinations to more cutscenes to a shoot-out to... well, you get the idea.
On the video game developer chart of weird to normal, and serious to goofy, where Hideo Kojima is weird/serious and Rare is normal/goofy, you'll find Remedy creative director Sam Lake firmly in the weird/goofy category.
His latest publicity stunt for the release of Alan Wake Remastered is proof of this, as the madman not only jumped into a freezing cold Scandinavian lake ("Cauldron Lake", he says) fully clothed, but also drank coffee in it. Sam, why?

Way back in 2011, the very first "Nintendo Direct" featured then-Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé in a white, echo-y room promoting the struggling 3DS by talking about how it was getting Hulu Plus and could record 3D videos. "Up to 10 minutes of 3D video can be recorded of anything you want," he said.…
NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) have exploded in popularity in 2021. This sucks. NFTs use blockchain technology to allow artists and creators to sell a "special type of cryptographic token which represents sgomething unique", so each token is one-of-a-kind. Though to be clear: only the token itself is certified as unique. …
After a few dozen hours in New World I still feel like a stranded traveller, newly washed up on the beaches of Aeternum. I've managed to skirt the mammoth queue times for long enough now to get a feel for Amazon Games' foray into the massively multiplayer genre, and that feeling can pretty much be summed up with a shrug and a '...yeah, it's alright'. Will New World scratch that itch you've got in the back of your brain for a new MMO in a pretty world filled with life and stuff to do? Definitely. Will you be gasping in awe wondering how Amazon managed to reinvigorate the genre? Probably not.
Friends have asked me about New World's mechanics during my playtime and I've found myself giving a disclaimer every time. The combat feels good for an MMO. The crafting is rewarding for an MMO. The world is gorgeous for an MMO. Sure, the more grounded combat is definitely a nice addition, but on the whole there doesn't seem to be much setting New World apart from its contemporaries other than its admittedly very pretty setting and aesthetic.
I haven't had much opportunity to experience PvP combat so far other than a couple of duels - not many players are flagged for open-world combat on my server - so PvE is the only real chance I've had to try out New World's action-combat system. Other than the odd bit of server lag, it feels pretty tight, and the experience varies dramatically depending on which weapon you're using. The greataxe's swing is meaty and impactful, but somehow the greathammer's size belies its range - it feels like you've got to get close enough to touch your opponent's eyelashes. The bow feels meek and lacklustre, but the rifle fires with a satisfying pop and little plume of gunsmoke that other players can see around you. My current favourite weapon is a high-level hatchet I found in a crate, which has a hefty strength bonus. I felt swift and nimble darting around flailing with my swings as my friend aimed headshots with his rifle. Each of New World's weapon types are leveled separately to your main level, so you're encouraged with your introductory loot drops to try out a few.
SCS Software's trucking simulators have had robust support from modders for ages, including a massively-multiplayer online mode with TruckersMP. Official multiplayer support came to American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 earlier this year, and while that implementation is quite different than the one modders built, it offers its own key advantages. Soon, those advantages will include support for even more mods.
Mod support for the Convoy multiplayer mode will go live in patch 1.42 for both ETS2 and ATS, and it's already available for testing in an open beta. As of this update, the server browser will now show you which - if any - mods are required for a given session. If they're available from the Steam Workshop, you'll be able to download them directly via an overlay without even needing to exit the game.
"We expect a majority of popular modifications to work from the get-go with this update, however, there may be some compatibility issues with others," the devs say in the announcement. There are some minor caveats, too - many sound mods will only play for local users, for example, so you won't be able to impress your friends with your custom truck horns.
October is shaping up to be a busy month on Steam. Earlier today the latest game demos event kicked off (here are the 13 best Steam Festival Demos) and later this month they'll be running another Digital Tabletop Festival. Like last year, it's a sale and livestream celebration of games inspired by and adapted from board games. This year the event will lean into RPGs, including a chat with the folks behind both Disco Elysium and Baldur's Gate 3 when it kicks off later this month.
Ever since its reveal back in E3 2021, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin left an impression on the gaming public both for better and for worse. The game, which reimagines the world of the original Final Fantasy and features action combat similar to that of Nioh, gained attention less so for its enjoyable gameplay loop and more so for its corny, meme-worthy presentation and dialogue. Players everywhere endlessly clowned on protagonist Jack's edgy lines about wanting to "kill Chaos." The demo's initially unplayable state upon launch only made the game even easier to make fun of. But regardless if one thinks the game will turn out an enjoyable time or a complete disaster, they will likely be interested to hear that Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin has a new release date of March 18, 2022. And there's a new demo to try out, too. According to a press release, this new demo, dubbed Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin Trial Version 2,...
We finally got a good look at some gameplay footage for Gungrave GORE during the Tokyo Game Show 2021. The South Korean developer IGGYMOB planned for the game to release in Japan by December 2019. However, it was struck by delays until, at last, Gungrave returned in typical bloody style with a cinematic trailer late August 2021. The new trailer gives us a proper look at the nice and gory combat. Ikumi Nakamura, the prior Tango Gameworks developer, also announced that she's contributing to the Gungrave GORE team. First off, let's talk about the trailer. The first part is the same cinematic trailer we saw more than a month back. However, once that's done, the bloodening begins. If you're eager to jump into the action, you can see it at the 1:30 mark. The combat in Gungrave GORE doesn't seem to have evolved much past 2019. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing. You can chalk up the gameplay of Gungrave GORE as "everything that move...
