| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 1:44 PM | | Today, Activision Blizzard announced the implementation of a zero-tolerance harassment policy, initiatives to increase the percentage of women and non-binary people at the company, an end to forced arbitration of sexual harassment claims, and more visibility on pay equity. CEO Bobby Kotick is also taking a pay cut to the minimum salary allowed by California law. The ABK Workers Alliance calls these changes "a huge win", but says there's more work to be done. In a letter to employees, also published as a press release, Kotick says "I have asked the Board to reduce my pay to the lowest amount California law will allow for people earning a salary, which this year is $62,500. To be clear, this is a reduction in my overall compensation, not just my salary. I am asking not to receive any bonuses or be granted any equity during this time." The company will no longer require arbitration for sexual harassment and discrimination claims. Forced arbitration clauses essentially require workers to go through a company-mandated process to resolve legal issues - in other words, it prevents employees from suing their employers. An end to forced arbitration was also one of the key demands from Riot Games employees back in 2019, and one which that company had rejected. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 1:41 PM | | It's nearly time to jump into this year's Call of Duty game, with the Vanguard release date set for next Friday. If you've pre-ordered the FPS game, you'll be able to pre-load it on your platform of choice, although PC players will have to wait a few days longer than console players to start devouring bandwidth. On Xbox and PlayStation consoles, pre-loading begins today, October 28. On PC, you'll be able to pre-load Vanguard starting November 2. We still don't know exactly what the storage requirements on PC are for Call of Duty: Vanguard. Activision has said that thanks to new texture streaming technology, this year's Call of Duty will save "up to 30%-50%" on hard drive space on new-gen consoles and PCs, which is a good thing: depending on which bits of the current Call of Duty you have installed, it could be taking up more than 200GB of disk space. On PlayStation 5, Activision says the game will require 89.84GB, while on Xbox Series X|S, the requirement is just 61GB. The PC install footprint could land just about anywhere, and it will likely depend heavily on whether you decide to install optional components such as a 4K texture pack.

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 11:58 AM | | Turn-based strategy games bring out the more cerebral undertones of the genre – the break afforded by 'turns' allows us to think, ponder and plan our moves with as much expert precision as we can muster. Witnessing that mater plan unfold can create untold levels of satisfaction, and suddenly you fancy yourself the master tactician. This genre is also home to the 'one more turn' trope - that feeling of near-addiction that compels you to click the 'End Turn' button just one more time to see what happens. Maybe you're waiting to see the outcome of a daring attack, maybe you're just trying to click through some downtime. We also have the best strategy games on PC if you're looking to expand beyond petty concepts like 'turns'. This is a living list, in the sense that there are many worthy candidates and not enough room to fit them all in. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 1:12 PM | | Wattson mains, it's time to breathe a sigh of relief. Apex Legends' resident fence-builder is getting a rework for the new season, which should help make her actually viable moving forward. The devs at Respawn provided us some early details on what to expect from Wattson's buffs in the new Escape season, and they're looking substantial. "The biggest change that will be immediately felt is with her fences," balance designer John Larson explains. "The cooldown is cut in half, and placement range has been increased by 50%. Slows associated with placing fence nodes have also been removed. In short, Wattson will have fences much more often and placing them will feel much snappier. Crossing a fence is much more punishing than it was before." When it comes to Wattson's ultimate, "the Trophy system will now have a health pool similar to Lifeline's drone instead of being time based. We found the timer to be unnecessarily limiting. Players may have felt obligated to stay next to it for the duration, or are concerned about placing it at just the right moment. Once the shield pool has been depleted, the Trophy system will persist to zap ordinance until the new one is placed. This means Wattson can rarely place multiple, but we found that was rarely used in the first place," Larson says. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 12:27 PM | | Searching for the best MP40 loadout in Call of Duty Vanguard? The MP40 dominated the Call of Duty Vanguard beta back in September, so there's a good chance it's going to continue its reign as the best SMG in the game. Though this weapon was designed for close quarters combat, it can be customised with a host of attachments to make it effective from medium range. Similarly to the best Kar98k loadout, the stock version of the MP40 is actually very good. It only takes four bullets to down an enemy, and the impressive rate of fire on this weapon results in a low time to kill speed. When compared to an assault rifle like the STG 44, the MP40 is lighter, features less recoil, and can empty an entire clip much faster than other Call of Duty Vanguard guns in the same category. With ten attachments to improve this weapon, our loadout focuses on reducing the recoil on the MP40 even further to make it easy to use. Here's everything you need to build the best MP40 loadout in Vanguard.

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 11:59 AM | | What's more exciting than learning the Hearts of Iron IV: No Step Back release date? Seeing the expansion in action, that's what! As part of Paradox Interactive's regular grand strategy game streaming schedule, viewers were treated to their first look at content from the upcoming Hearts of Iron 4 DLC. Regular hosts Benjamin Magnus and Alex Dunk from the community team were joined by content designers Manuel Molina and Thomas Arnfeldt. The stream featured around an hour's worth of gameplay as the Soviet Union with their new focus tree, which we've reported before needed a dedicated design team just to create. During the stream, the developers mentioned that there could be at least 300 different options in total, making it the biggest tree to date. Other fascinating nuggets from the stream include the fact that players can trigger around three different civil wars themselves when playing as Russia, although that doesn't take into account various AI actions and possibilities outside of player actions. With all that purging, we wonder if you'll have time to fight the real war against Germany. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 12:17 PM | | At this week's Develop: Brighton conference, Total War: Warhammer II developer Creative Assembly has given fans some real insight into how it brought some of the strategy game's most memorable characters to life through speech and audio design. In a talk about dialogue work on the game's creatures and monsters, principal dialogue engineer Will Tidman and senior dialogue engineer Dan Stirling have shared a deep-dive into how they went about breathing life into the Skaven's Warlock Master and Beastmen leader Taurox. Tidman explains that a key challenge in creating new characters is fitting them into a style that's so well established, while still making them individual. For Warlock Master, drawing on the Skaven's existing "skittish", "twitchy", and "aggressive" speech traits with word repetitions offered a good place to start. Tidman says that the dialogue team first took a good look at the character's concept art. Because the Warlock Master didn't already have a big backstory or characteristics to draw from, the devs instead took inspiration from the DLC's mechanical, engineering-focussed approach to battle - especially the ways these themes factored into the lord's designs. For example, his face mask and tubes gave the devs the idea of using respirator-type sounds over his breaths to enhance this facet. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 11:16 AM | | October 28, 2021 The Nvidia RTX 3080 GeForce Now subscription is now available for everyone to pre-order, but comes in limited quantities. Nvidia proved that just about anyone can run the Crysis Remastered Trilogy no matter whether they're using a PC, Mac, or smartphone thanks to cloud gaming, but it's not resting on its laurels. As of today, you'll notice a brand new top-tier membership that lets you exclusively stream from Nvidia's new supercomputer, which packs more than 1,000 RTX 3080 graphics cards. At 35 shader teraflops apiece, that's almost three times the performance of the Xbox Series X and a total of 39 petaflops to tap into. While the GPU takes centre stage here, Nvidia pairs its flagship RTX cards with AMD Threadripper Pro gaming CPUs to make it a computational powerhouse. Naturally, this translates to a whole heap of performance improvements for RTX 3080 GeForce Now subscribers. For reference, the Priority membership lets you play games at 1080p resolution and 60fps for six-hour stints. The new subscription bumps this up to 1440p at 120fps on gaming PCs and iMacs, 1600p at 120fps on Macbooks, and even 4K at 60fps with high-dynamic range (HDR) on Nvidia Shield TV. You might see the latter appear on other devices later down the line, but it will only be on Nvidia's set top box at launch. You'll even get to game for eight hours per session, although we strongly recommend taking regular breaks anyway. RELATED LINKS: RTX 2070 Super review, RTX 2060 Super review, Best graphics card

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 11:04 AM | | Things take a bit of a dark turn in the latest update for Cold War-era city-building game Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic. The sandbox management game, in which you run a command economy in a small Soviet nation in the mid-twentieth century, now has a government loyalty system, secret police to help enforce compliance, and orphanages for the children of workers lost to the many industrial accidents that are likely going on in the coal mines. The big new feature in version 0.8.5.9 of Workers and Resources is the updated government loyalty system. Citizens now have some level of loyalty to the state, and that's influenced by their quality of life, their productivity on the job, and whether or not they see glorious monuments while they're riding the train to work. It's an interesting and nuanced system: if you allow citizens with low loyalty to move into certain key jobs, such as TV broadcasting or teaching, that dissatisfaction and disloyalty can spread to others. Highly loyal citizens won't be as impacted by shortages of basic amenities, but if their loyalty is low, small changes in the availability of goods and services will have a more drastic impact on their overall happiness and productivity.

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:39 AM | | The English are one of the most straightforward Age of Empires IV civilisations, in that Relic has stated in the past they were designed in a way that closely matches civ design in past Age of Empires games. This means they should be one of the more familiar civs for player's of past games to try out, and indeed they are rated one out of three stars on the in-game difficulty tracker. The English as a culture emerged as Anglo-Saxon and Norman heritage mixed together, and in-game they specialise in agriculture and defence. Their unique unit is the Longbowman, but they also get access to the Vanguard Men-at-Arms heavy infantry in the Dark Age, giving them a powerful early game advantage over other civs. Their age-up process is straightforward, with their options during each age essentially representing stronger versions of either Keeps or Town Centers, with only one or two niche picks in the entire range. Let's take an overview of their special abilities, along with general hints and tips on how they play as a faction. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:36 AM | | Looking for the best New World rapier build? There are plenty of powerful New World weapons to choose from, and because Amazon's new MMO doesn't limit you to a single class, players are able to try out every weapon in the game before deciding which ones to level up. The rapier is an instant favourite for many players who enjoy its swishy, nimble playstyle. It's a graceful yet ferocious weapon that is capable of dealing a large amount of single target damage, and has plenty of mobility skills in its arsenal to help you sidestep dangerous foes. The rapier doesn't offer too much in the way of crowd control - it's best suited to one-on-one situations, whether that's dueling foes in PvP or facing formidable PvE bosses. It's also a melee weapon, so you may want to run a ranged weapon alongside it, particularly if you spend time in New World wars, prefer leveling solo, or want more versatility for open-world PvP. No matter the situation in which you intend to wield it, here are the best New World rapier builds. RELATED LINKS: New World system requirements, New World beginner's guide, New World review

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:28 AM | | Looking for the best MG42 loadout in Call of Duty Vanguard? LMGs such as the MG42 historically have two significant weaknesses: reload time and recoil management. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about the reload time other than suggest that you reload only when nobody's around. However, the attachments you can equip onto the MG42 can help mitigate some of the gun's recoil shortcomings. The new Suppression mechanic in Vanguard makes LMGs more enticing compared to previous Call of Duty games. Suppression fire slows down your opponent's movement when they're shot - coordinate with your team to rack up assists by blindfiring at groups of enemies easily. With this MG42 loadout, we're going to focus on bringing down that relatively high vertical recoil so that you can easily hit your target while firing in longer bursts. Sometimes an attachment choice is more critical to one game mode than another, so a couple of the attachments have multiple options you can choose from, depending on your preference. There are some slots that we've left blank in our loadout, and there are very good reasons for this. We will explain the reasoning behind each attachment that we've equipped, any drawbacks that an attachment will give you, and which attachments help mitigate those penalties to the MG42's stats.

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:16 AM | | Want to know what the best New World war hammer builds are for PvP and PvE? There's plenty of choice when it comes to building your New World character, and we've tested quite a few different options since the new MMO game launched. Magic weapons, particularly the life staff, are seeing lots of use, but there are plenty of viable alternatives for those who prefer melee attacks. When it comes to damage, the war hammer doesn't occupy the top spot in our New World weapon tier list, but it plays a significant role as a support to bolster the effectiveness of other weapon types. We have two different kinds of war hammer builds for you: one focuses on healing your teammates in PvP, and the second helps the rest of your expedition team by tanking enemy damage in PvE. If you're still deciding which weapon to level up first, we have several build guides to help you out. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:07 AM | | The Mongol civilisation represents the greatest extent of Age of Empires IV's civilisation asymmetry. They are the horse lords from the steppes, nomads who managed to conquer and forge one of the biggest empires in history under Genghis Khan and his descendants. As such, they play very different to pretty much ever other civilisation, and are not for beginners. For starters, they don't need to build houses - the Mongols start with the maximum population size. They get early access to both horsemen and lancers, and all of their buildings can pack up and relocate somewhere new. You don't want to be sitting passive with this civ - moving around and exploiting the terrain is key, but the Mongols' affinity for stone will focus your attention around the major sources of this resource on the map. The Mongols are rated three out of three starts on the in-game difficulty rating. One of the few things that does play according to the same rules as everyone else is how they age up. You'll still need to build the landmarks as normal to progress through the ages. RELATED LINKS: Age of Empires 4 release date, Age of Empires 4 review, The best RTS games on PC

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:06 AM | | Want to know what the best Kar98k loadout is in Call of Duty Vanguard? The Kar98k has been a dominant force in Call of Duty over the past few years, becoming an instant pick in Modern Warfare, Cold War, and Warzone. What makes this sniper rifle stand out is its mobility and one shot kill potential - if you love quickscoping, this is the best weapon for you. It's rare to find stock versions of weapons that are viable at a high level, but the Kar98k might be the best stock weapon in the game. The default setup works really well for traditional sniping, especially in Vanguard which features large maps with plenty of sniping lanes. However, if you want to play aggressively, there are some attachments that can drastically change the Kar98k. There's no point having the fastest quickscope animation if you need two shots to kill an enemy. For our Vanguard Kar98k loadout, we're focusing on improving the Kar98k's aim down sight speed without negatively affecting the weapon's damage output.

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 10:15 AM | | Prime Gaming is really upping its, er, game. The subscription service - which you can sign up to here - added one of the best Star Wars games to members' libraries this month with the arrival of Star Wars: Squadrons. Now, Amazon has revealed that three other big hitters are headed members' way in November, with some Dragon Age, Tomb Raider, and Control-shaped stuff coming up. First up, BioWare's highly-acclaimed 2014 RPG Dragon Age: Inquisition is coming to Prime Gaming in November, which - like the subscription's library additions each month - will be free to grab and keep for members. Having scooped up over 130 game of the year awards and currently costing around £17.99 / $19.99 for the standard edition on EA's site, it's a pretty good deal if you haven't tried it already. You play as the Inquisitor who has to save the world from falling in on itself, making tough choices in a narrative-driven, role-playing adventure. Elsewhere in November, Rise of the Tomb Raider - the second game in Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix's modern Lara Croft trilogy - is coming to Prime Gaming. The game sees Lara uncover an ancient mystery that sets a ruthless organisation called Trinity against her, and she has to race the group to track the secret in the Lost City of Kitezh down. | PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 9:40 AM | | So, you want to know about Age of Empires IV hotkey and shortcuts? For better and for worse, RTS games often require a high 'APM' - actions per minute - especially when playing competitive multiplayer matches. As quick and accurate as a mouse can be, it's still a lot easier to combine with a selection of keyboard shortcuts so you can do basic actions quickly. These can range from selecting unit groups quickly, to cycling through buildings, and even queuing up build orders without having to click the button manually. These shortcuts can also be useful if you're having trouble locating a specific unit, or just want a quick and easy way to tell everyone to charge that wall like there's no tomorrow. We've put together a quick guide to Age of Empires IV hotkeys. Credit to Microsoft for sharing a detailed list of hotkeys and control shortcuts on the official Xbox website. We haven't copied everything - the more basic control functions will be taught to you in-game, and some of the more niche shortcuts are only really relevant for highly competitive multiplayer. The rest though should be useful to most people. RELATED LINKS: Age of Empires 4 release date, Age of Empires 4 review, The best RTS games on PC

| PCGamesN Thursday, October 28, 2021 9:13 AM | | So, you want to know how to pay tribute in Age of Empires IV? Paying tribute is something you may encounter quite a few times during the new RTS game's campaigns, but it's also something you can do in multiplayer as well, as it involves sending resources to other players. In the second Norman Conquest mission, for example, you can use the mechanic to pay off viking raiders to stop them attacking you on your way to York. In the second Rise of Moscow mission, you have to pay regular tribute to the Golden Horde otherwise they'll attack you with a strong army in retribution. Both instances place tribute as a crucial part of the mission, but if you've not had much time with the game you might initially be confused as to how you do this. The first few times you're asked to do this in the game, a tooltip does pop up to point you in the right direction. These can sometimes be easy to miss or click off, however, and that's not taking into account anyone who's turned off hints altogether. We've put together a quick guide on how you pay tribute in Age of Empires IV - we hope you find it helpful. | Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, October 28, 2021 12:00 PM | | Daniel Mullins says he's not sure that "horror" is the most accurate way to describe his gruesome new card battler Inscryption. He immediately follows this up by telling me a friend of his had nightmares because of the menacing figure you play cards against, so yeah, maybe it's a bit horror-like. But I kind of understand his point. At the start, Inscryption is like a hostage situation, where you're forced to play a card-based roguelike against a sinister games master. Then, just as you start getting the hang of things, the game evolves into something way more complex. If you've played Mullins' other games you'll know his work can go to some weird, meta places. I won't say more above the cut, because I'd hate to spoil it. But for those of you who've already played, read on for more detail on how Mullins created an excellently unsettling world. Read more

| PC Invasion - FeedDDD Thursday, October 28, 2021 4:00 PM | | Another week, another free game courtesy of Epic. This time around Aven Colony is going to be free on the Epic Games Store. Beginning November 4, Epic Games Store users will be able to add the alien city builder to their library. It will remain available for free until November 11. We don't know exactly how much it will cost after this offer ends but it's possible to take a reasonable guess. On Steam, Aven Colony retails at $30 USD outside of sales. Although, right now it is 75% off at $7.49 USD until November 1. Unless you really dislike Epic, I'd recommend taking the free offer instead. Is it worth playing? In short, yes. Aven Colony is a great city builder that takes advantage of its extraterrestrial theme to create some fun mechanics. At $30 USD there was an argument against buying Aven Colony, but with the Epic Games Store taking away that price tag, it's certainly worth a try. Aven Colony's gameplay tasks you with providing humanity with a ...

| PC Invasion - FeedDDD Thursday, October 28, 2021 3:30 PM | | The Final Fantasy series has seen some pretty radical changes over the years, but a certain subset of fans will always prefer the original pixel-art installments that came out on Nintendo consoles. For this reason, the Final Fantasy pixel remaster series has undoubtedly pleased many of those classic fans. Especially since they provide an opportunity for newer generations of players to experience these cherished games. And now, these newer generations will have even more classic Final Fantasy games to sample, as Square Enix recently announced that the remastered version of Final Fantasy V will release on Steam come November 10. According to a press release, Final Fantasy V stars "a young man and his Chocobo, who find themselves drawn toward friends that will change their destiny." These protagonists have a fairly daunting journey ahead of them, as the king has gone missing and "the crystals that balance the powers of the world" have fallen into jeopardy. Playe...

Now would be an ideal time to check your wishlist, as you may have something in there at a reduced cost. The sale runs today and lasts until November 1, which means you don't have long to choose this time. Many Steam sales generally go for a couple weeks, so the pressure is on. The Steam Halloween Sale 2021 is, of course, bringing discounts for horror games, and even features a header to let you choose between good, old-fashioned horror or just "spooky themes." You also have a "Just for you" section that curates games based on your play history. Of course, there's a selection for "Not Horror" if you're simply not into the scares. That's fine, too. But the horror games are what's on display at the Steam Store. Games like Little Nightmares II and Soma are featured. For the former, that one is going for 75% ...

However, Character Producer John Goscicki released a statement on the Valorant website revealing that the Episode 3 Act III agent has been delayed. The new release date for the mysterious agent is two weeks after the start of Episode 3 Act III with patch 3.10. Goscicki stated that the reason for the delay is the agent not meeting the quality standards that fans have come to expect. The agent is 90% done, but for Riot Games the final polish needs to be perfect. According to Goscicki, the main thing that still needs improvements is gameplay clarity. So, the visual cues that let you know what the agent is doing at a glance. In a tactical shooter like Valorant, where the time to kill is milliseconds, these visual elements are essential to competitive integrity. In happier news, Riot has decided to reveal the delayed Valorant agent tomorrow, October 29. You can tune into any ...
