PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:48 AM Dota 2 has just seen the highest number of peak players in over a year and a half, with more than 780,000 concurrent players diving into Valve's MOBA game in January. That's according to Steam Charts (via Yahoo News), which records that the last time Dota 2 surpassed January's peak was way back in spring 2020. January's exact total was 786,118 peak players, going by Steam Charts' stats. While concurrent players have stayed between the high 600 and mid-700 thousands over the past year or so, the last time January's total was beaten was in May 2020 with a hefty 793,135. While it's not totally clear why it's seen such a jump this month in particular, it's very likely the leap has been spurred on by the arrival of Dota: Dragon's Blood Book Two - the second season of the game's anime spin-off - on Netflix on January 18. While that fell somewhat later into the month, it's likely this will have made a not-insignificant impact on Dota's peak player count, particularly given it looks like the debut of Book One also caused a similar rise. The first season arrived in late March, 2021, which then saw the peak players go from 648,875 that month to 705,534 in April - a jump of more than 56,000. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:39 AM The best graphics cards are already absurdly expensive, but Galax's Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti could cost as much as a high-end gaming PC. Spotted by Moore's Law is Dead, the GPU's eye-watering price was listed on a leaked Minh An Computer preorder advert before it was swiftly removed from the retailer's social media and website. The expensive card in question is the Galax GeForce RTX 3090 Ti 24GB EX Gamer Black Edition, a title that's as absurd as its proposed price. The GPU's leak suggests that it could cost 86,990,000 VND ($3,840 USD), meaning it could cost near that of an Alienware Aurora R13 desktop complete with an Nvidia RTX 3080. Lofty board partner prices do enough to make the RTX 3090 Ti unobtainable, but sources close to Moore's Law also say that the GPU is delayed indefinitely, and Nvidia is keeping its plans close to its chest. While this doesn't mean the card has been cancelled, it does suggest that a potential release date isn't in sight. RELATED LINKS: RTX 2070 Super review, RTX 2060 Super review, Best graphics card |
PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:10 AM Want to know how to get Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's skin in Fortnite? As one of the most electrifying men in sports entertainment and featuring in some of the highest-grossing films in the last decade, finally, the Rock has come back to Fortnite. After his brief cameo during the end of Chapter 2, we now have the chance to unlock a Fortnite skin based on the likeness of the people's champion, though it is initially covered up. While these challenges don't specifically ask you to lay the smackdown on your opponents in the battle royale game, you do have a bunch of quests you need to complete to unlock The Foundation's skin and all of the associated cosmetics. Sadly there is no emote to use the people's elbow finishing move from the Rock's wrestling days, but what's here is worth grabbing, including an emote that reveals his face. These challenges may take a bit of time to complete, so we'll go over how to get all of the related Foundation items, including a map showing the locations for one of the challenges and tips for eliminating a rather tricky Fortnite NPC that's just arrived on the island. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:49 AM Halo Infinite's big, bonkers 24-player Big Team Battle mode has faced some matchmaking and stability teething problems since shortly after it debuted. Since then, 343 Industries has looked to fix the issue, though a recent hotfix unfortunately didn't quite do the trick. Now, though, it looks like we've got an update that should patch up BTB coming later today. "Meeting just wrapped: Update for BTB is ready for launch tomorrow, targeting 10am PT. See you all then," 343 senior community manager John Junyszek posted on Twitter last night with a 'fingers crossed' emoji to round it off. So, it sounds like we should see a patch to iron out the BTB issues arrive at some time around 1pm ET / 6pm GMT today - so keep your eyes out for some downtime around then. This follows an update from Junyszek this past weekend on the Halo Waypoint forums giving us an idea of what the patch will entail. "Using the telemetry we received from the hotfix on January 19, we were able to make a new build with an update that we believe should address the core issue impacting the BTB playlist," he said at the time. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:46 AM Before hopping into Techland's new zombie game, you'll need to compare your gaming PC with the Dying Light 2 system requirements. Fortunately, the barrier to entry is quite low and shouldn't tax most modern systems, but hardware requirements quickly become much steeper if you plan to turn on the game's ray tracing features. Yes, that's features, plural. Ray traced global illumination, reflections, and shadows can all be turned on to push Dying Light's visual fidelity even higher, providing you have a compatible GPU. However, turning any of these settings on will incur a performance cost. To combat this, Techland recommends you equip your system with one of the best graphics cards on the market: the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. Thankfully, Nvidia DLSS upscaling technology should help to boost fps if your rig's struggling to maintain your target frame rate. Unfortunately, there's no word of AMD FSR support, so those on team red with Radeon GPUs aren't quite as fortunate. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:16 AM Weekly reset day has arrived in GTA Online. Every Thursday, Rockstar Games updates the online game with new goodies, discounts, and challenges. The official rundown will appear on the Newswire later in the day, though the content refresh is already live. As such, GTA Online players have been mulling around to see what's new. We're still getting a steady rollout of new vehicles from The Contract update, and this week is no different. The Western Reever motorcycle is now available at Legendary Motorsport for $1,900,000 in-game bucks. If you're into your vehicles, the bike looks a tad like the Arch Method 143. The Western Reever has appeared in The Contract's story quests, so you'll likely find it familiar looking. That's not all that's happening this week, either. The GTA podium vehicle is the Infernus Classic, whereas the GTA Prize Ride is the Comet S2, which you can get for placing first in pursuit races for three days in a row. If you're looking to raise some extra funds this week, you can get double the in-game cash and experience on Transform races, Turner contracts, and the Sumo adversary mode. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 5:53 AM Want to know when the Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak release date is? Announced during Tokyo Game Show last year, the upcoming expansion for Monster Hunter Rise adds a whole new region of monsters to hunt in one of the best co-op games available. If the DLC for Monster Hunter World is anything to go by, the Sunbreak expansion will have just as much stuff to do as the base game. The best news is that while we PC owners were late to the party, we're getting the expansion at the same time as Nintendo Switch hunters. This simultaneous release date means that, on PC, you can get the best-looking visuals and smoothest performance when hunting the dragon-like flagship monster Malzeno. If you want the best performance, you should consult our Monster Hunter Rise system requirements guide and if you're still on the fence on whether you should get it, you can also read our Monster Hunter Rise review. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 5:40 AM WASD is a new consumer videogame show headed to the UK later this year as part of the London Games Festival 2022. The show will give attendees the opportunity to try some great games, meet some content creators, and hear about new and upcoming games from developers. Now, WASD is launching a new slice of the event which will let indie devs showcase their goodies for free. Called WASD Curios, the event is looking to offer indie developers a platform to exhibit projects that "sit outside the mainstream; that do things a bit differently", as the show's blog announcement explains. This "different" aspect here can mean a whole bunch of different things - it could be that the games aren't very far along into their development or that they use innovative or non-traditional controllers. It could also be that the project might not fall into the typical category of 'games' or be aiming towards a commercial release. "Nothing is too weird or too small; we're looking to make a balanced lineup of stuff that's exciting and interesting for all sorts of different reasons," the organisers explain on the application page. So, it sounds like there's a lot of scope to show off all kinds of weird and wonderful projects at the show, WIP or not. RELATED LINKS: Best indie games, What is WASD?, Upcoming PC games |
PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:18 AM What is the GTA 5 podium car this week? GTA Online vehicles are expensive things, so we're happy to take a spin on the Diamond Casino's Lucky Wheel to get a discount. Winning isn't guaranteed, sure, but it isn't out of the question either. Look, we don't have a problem - leave it alone. You can spin the Diamond Casino's Lucky Wheel once a day, and each Podium Car refreshes after seven days on a Thursday. Basically, you have seven shots to get the vehicle of that given week. If you own a Penthouse, you can spin it for free, but if you don't it's $500 a spin. Don't fret if you don't win, though, as you can win something else. You have a one in 20 chance of getting the podium vehicle, a car discount, or a mystery prize. There's a four in 20 chance of getting clothes, chips, and cash. Finally, there's a five in 20 chance of getting RP. Keeping tabs on the GTA Online podium car can be a bother, though, so we're going to keep this GTA 5 guide updated so you have somewhere to check back on. On that note, here's the GTA 5 podium car for this week. RELATED LINKS: GTA 5 mods, GTA 6, Buy GTA V |
PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:22 AM The GTA Online Los Santos Tuners update introduced plenty of new content, all focused on the city's underground tuner scene. There's a new 'social space', called the LS Car Meet, where you can show off your souped-up cars, race with fellow gearheads, and take on jobs - here's how to join the LS Car Meet in the Los Santos Tuners update. Throughout your time spent in the Car Meet, you can level up your reputation and unlock new benefits as you progress. There's also a huge Test Track inside the warehouse, where you can try out Test Rides - a great opportunity to take different vehicles for a spin. Becoming an LS Car Meet member sets you back $50,000 in-game bucks, but it grants you access to a bunch of underground shops - the Merch Shop, Tattoo Shop, and a Modding Area where you can tweak your car in real time. At higher levels, you can create your own customised area in the Car Meet, called a Private Takeover. LS Car Meet members can also compete in Prize Ride challenges, in order to be in with a chance to win a Prize Ride. RELATED LINKS: GTA 5 mods, GTA 6, Buy GTA V |
PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 5:02 AM It's that time again, League of Legends fans. Patch 12.3 has made the leap from the MOBA game's PBE to live servers, which means it's now turn for a new testing cycle to kick into gear. League of Legends patch 12.4 has now arrived for its fortnight-long round of testing and tinkering, and there's already plenty to check out. The big news this patch is the arrival of yet another new champion. Hot on the heels of Zeri's release with League of Legends patch 12.2, Renata Glasc has now made her debut on the PBE. Known as the Chem Baroness, she's a powerful figure with "an advanced technological heritage" from Zaun, who has risen through the ranks to become the region's wealthiest chem baron - "a business magnate who built her power by tying everyone's interests to her own". Mysterious, persuasive, and with what sounds like a bit of a ruthless streak, Renata Glasc is being launched as a support champ. You can check out all of her abilities, stats, and skins in the notes below. Elsewhere this patch, we've got some new Shockblade skins on the way for champions Kassadin, Shen, and Qiyana, and the new-and-improved Firelight Ekko - which was previously delayed - is now on the way. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:27 AM When is the Dying Light 2 release date? Techland announced the sequel to their parkour zombie game back at E3 2018. Four laters later it's still not been released, but hope is on the horizon - you won't have to wait much longer. We've seen plenty of details about the game's gameplay, setting, and story, plus a few gameplay trailers. Techland is massively expanding on Dying Light 1's parkour movement - it's safe to say that this isn't going to be your typical undead shooter. Dying Light 2 is set in a decaying city that is struggling to keep itself together amid competing factions, so you will have a lot more to deal with than undead monstrosities. The decisions you make and the groups you team up with will shape the world around you, allowing you to reap the ensuing rewards if you can stomach the consequences. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 4:33 AM Valheim launched on Steam a year ago yesterday, and Iron Gate has outlined its Steam Deck ambitions as a birthday present. In a celebratory post, the Nordic survival game's developers revealed that they're currently working towards handheld optimisation, which could help it earn it Verified status. In its "One Year of Valheim" event post, Iron Gate says "Steam Deck is also planned to launch in February! We would of course like to have Valheim running smoothly on it from the start, so that's something we're working on at the moment." Currently, Valheim comes with partial PC controller support, and it's not yet included on the Steam Deck's Verified list. However, the game is listed as "playable" on SteamDB, so getting Iron Gate's Nordic limbo running on the portable shouldn't be an issue. In fact, players should be able to boost fps and play with higher settings enabled, thanks to SteamOS' included AMD FSR upscaling. PCGamesN Thursday, February 3, 2022 5:04 AM Dying Light 2 kicks off an absolutely absurd month of big game releases in February, and if you're looking to jump into the parkour-fuelled zombie smasher the instant the launch arrives, developer Techland has helpfully provided a full breakdown of the Dying Light 2 release times. And hey, in certain parts of the world, you'll technically even get to play before February 4. If you're looking to read something while you wait, though, the Dying Light 2 review scores are starting to filter through. We gave it a six-out-of-ten score in our Dying Light 2 review. While the parkour and combat mechanics are "excellent", we have found that "bugs, repetitive side content, bad storytelling, and the unfulfilled promise of its choice and consequence system" have left the game falling a tad short. The devs have already provided the Dying Light 2 system requirements, so you can see if your PC is up to the task of running it ahead of release, too. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:47 AM Somehow, it has been one full year since Valheim entered early access. Seems unlikely. I'd buy six months, I'd buy two years, but one year? I don't think so. Still, the makers are quite insistent, so let's humour their charade and hear what they have to say about their future plans for the base-building Norse mythology survival game. Steam Deck support, caves in the Mountains biome, a pretty moth in the Mistlands... okay, sure. |

It will have two editions and will launch on June 9, 2022. Though this release date is for Japan, it is possible that the Switch version will release in other regions, as the game is available in English. However, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!] The regular edition of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles on the Switch will cost 7,480 JPY (about $65), and the limited edition will cost 11,800 JPY (approximately $103). It is unclear as to whether the limited edition will provide new outfits for these characters, or if the Kimetsu Academy costumes will appear as outfits for other existing playable characters. Siliconera Thursday, February 3, 2022 7:30 AM Famitsu announced that Pokemon Legends: Arceus sales during its first three days of release have reached an estimated number of 1,424,657 copies sold in Japan. The outlet counted physical sales in the country from January 28 to January 30, 2022. This number does not factor in digital sales. However, Famitsu did include sales of the physical download cards that gave buyers access to the game once they entered the serial number found within it. [Thanks, Famitsu!] With this number, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has become the second best-selling Switch game during its launch week in Japan . It immediately went above Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The remakes recorded 1,395,642 physical units sold in November 2021. All of the aforementioned games surpassed Pokemon Sword and Shield, which sold 1,364,544 units during their first three days of release in 2019. Pokemon Legends: Arceus also received a distinction for being a single-version title. Famitsu combined the sales numbers for the previous Pokemon titles mentioned above, as they consist of two different versions. However, Arceus has not dethroned Animal Crossing: New Horizons as the best-selling Switch game during the first three days of its release in Japan. The latter had 1,880,626 physical units sold in March 2020. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is immediately available worldwide on the Nintendo Switch. The Pokemon Company also started selling merchandise related to the game in Japan on January 28, 2022. Siliconera Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:30 AM A recent financial report from Nintendo revealed the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes have sold 13.97 million units worldwide. A majority of these sales came from the October to December 2021 holiday period. Total software sales in general saw a significant increase during that time period. The latest sales numbers make Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl the ninth best-selling Switch titles to date. Of the 13.9 million units sold, approximately 10 million units were sold outside of Japan. In comparison, Famitsu previously reported back in December 2021 that the two remakes had sold a combined 6 million units worldwide since launch. Earlier in November, the remakes had sold 1.3 million units in the first week of launch. The next best-selling titles, Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee, have sold a cumulative 14.3 million units since their 2018 release. Interestingly, the financial report also noted that digital software sales saw a significant increase during the holiday season. The report credited a few releases for the rise in sales. These included the release of the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes, as well as the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing Happy Home Paradise DLC, and the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. These releases also likely contributed to the boost in hardware sales for the Nintendo Switch. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are immediately available on the Nintendo Switch. Siliconera Thursday, February 3, 2022 6:00 AM Sales for the Nintendo Switch family of consoles have surpassed the 100 million unit mark. As of December 31, 2021, the Nintendo Switch, Lite, and OLED consoles have sold an estimated 103.54 million units worldwide. This makes the Nintendo Switch the fifth best-selling video game console in history, beating out the original PlayStation and Nintendo Wii. Currently, the PlayStation 4 is the fourth best-selling console, with 116 million units sold. Nintendo released the total sales numbers in a recent earnings report. The 2021 holiday season proved to be an important time for the console, as the Nintendo Switch saw a large boost in sales for all three models. Specifically, the report revealed that the Nintendo Switch console sales reached 10.67 million units in FY2022 Q3 (September to December 2021) alone. That's nearly triple the amount sold in the previous quarter. Notably, the newer Switch OLED model sold approximately 3.99 million units, with most of the sales happening during the Q3 period. Furthermore, Q3 sales were likely boosted by the release of the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes in November 2021. As such, total software sales in FY2022 so far have reached 179.29 million units. Below are the sale numbers for each console model for the 2022 fiscal year so far:
In comparison, Nintendo reported that Nintendo Switch sales had reached 92.87 million units worldwide in November 2021. Additionally, Famitsu estimated that over 5 million units of the console were sold in 2021 in Japan alone.
