It's so terrifying to face that I almost didn't write this post, because I knew I'd have to drop into its heinous lair in order to take the screenshot you see above. But I'm a brave boy, so I dropped in, and of course died almost instantly. Sekiro is still one of the toughest soulslikes around, absolutely filled with extremely dangerous bosses and twisted body-horror monstrosities that can carve you up with just a couple of hits, sending you back to the last checkpoint bereft of all your XP. But the Headless scares me so much, I actively avoid facing it until I have absolutely no choice. |

A lot of them have been cursed by their creators to narrate everything they do, as they do it, incase the meatsacks controlling them are unable to parse even one second of what is happening on screen without direction. I love HZD's Aloy, but does she ever just stream-of-consciousness her way through life. In contrast, the nameless protagonist in Don't Nod's new climbing puzzle adventure (what even are genres?) is also silent. There are no other NPCs. You are climbing up through the ruins of an old civilisation. As such, Jusant relies on the devs having crafted an understandable world that you can barely interact with, aside from painstakingly climbing across it like a spidery archaeologist. You've got to have faith in your environmental storytelling if you're making a game like that. And Don't Nod have nailed it. |

I know a little about the Yakuza series, having reviewed the 1980s-set Yakuza Zero for this very parish in 2018, and tried a bit of 2019's turn-based battler Yakuza: Like A Dragon. Fast-forward to 2023, and all Yakuza games are now Like A Dragon games, including the forthcoming Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which is an... Animal Crossing game, actually? With skateboarding? I'm still getting my head around the existence of a zombie spin-off, Dead Souls, to say nothing of the samurai-era Like A Dragon: Ishin. And then there's the inter-quel Like a Dragon Gaiden, due this November, which seems like a relatively straight-laced delve into the past of original protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. Phew, it's just as well Ed Thorn wrote that guide to the order you should play the Yakuza games in. It sounds like the developers at Ryu ga Gotoku Studio have a hard time keeping track themselves, especially given the rate at which Sega publish Like A Dragon games. According to studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama, Like A Dragon's creators feel a lot of pressure to get the games done quickly, not just with a view to making money but because as projects that riff so copiously on pop culture, Like A Dragon stories go out of date fast. |

It's a slower, more weighty survival game than you might be used to if you're a Valheim or ARK type, for example, and you'll spend a lot of your time in the dark. But what is this, a survival game for elves? No sir. And besides, like I said, it's rather sweet. Cosy, even. |

Lunacid is a homage to classic FromSoftware games - no, not that juvenile upstart Dark Souls, but King's Field and Shadow's Tower, which date back to the late 1990s. I played one of the King's Field games as a sprog and found it to be an extended cave system full of lava, demons and torment. Lunacid sort of applies the perspective and medieval fantasy combat of that series to a story reminiscent of Demon's Souls - the From-alike that spurred the Japanese studio to international fame - with a world that has been flooded with toxic mist by a "sleeping old one below". Your job, as some unfortunate outcast chucked into a pit, is to journey downward and confront this mysterious creature, using any and all combinations of rapiers, clubs and fireballs. Off you go then. |

Pathea Games took to social media to show how My Time at Sandrock development helped with My Time at Portia Switch loading times. Due to work on the sequel ports, the team was able to improve the original game.
The update noted that when working on the console versions of My Time at Sandrock, new "optimization techniques" came up. The team then went back to the original game to see how that would work on the first game in the series. The work still isn't done yet, as the new patch is in Q&A. Once done, it will be handed over to Nintendo and, after that, an update will eventually be released. There's no release window for that new patch yet, however.
Here's the video showing the exact comparison. Entering the Portia Commerce Guild involves 4.02 seconds of loading in My Time at Portia Switch after the update. The original took 7.23 seconds. Leaving the building to go back into town will take 6.33 seconds after the update, compared to 9.11 before.
As a reminder, lag and loading times were both issues when the original game debuted on the Switch in 2019.
My Time at Portia is available for the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC, and mobile devices, and My Time at Sandrock will come to the PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on November 2, 2023.

Square Enix announced the release of the new Cait Sith and Giant Moogle robot plush from FFVII Remake and Rebirth. The new plushes are sold separately and will release in Japan on January 27, 2023.
The Cait Sith plush costs 4,180 yen (or about $28). It is made out of yarn and has a knitted texture. Meanwhile, the Giant Moogle plush costs 5,500 yen (~$36), and it features a soft and fluffy texture. Both plushes are now available for pre-order from the Square Enix e-store.

Cait Sith was confirmed as a new playable character in the upcoming FFVII Rebirth, the sequel to the 2020 FFVII Remake. Square Enix recently shared a divisive post on how to pronounce Cait Sith's name in FFVII Rebirth.
The Final Fantasy VII Cait Sith and Giant Moogle plushes cost 4,180 yen (~$28) and 5,500 yen (~$36) respectively. They will release in Japan on January 27, 2023 and are now available for pre-order from the Square Enix e-store. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. FFVII Rebirth will release for the PS5 on February 29, 2024.

The final anime crossover for Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis in 2023, as Sega announced in the October 2023 NGS Headline that it will add content from Black Lagoon into the PSO2 upgrade. That will show up sometime in December 2023.
A "Black Lagoon Style" scratch ticket will feature avatar items and weapon camos that let players replicate Black Lagoon characters like Revy and Roberta. The anime's opening song "Red fraction" will also be available in-game via a Music Disc.
Sega's announcement included a piece of original artwork where Black Lagoon's Revy is posing with Ogi, the default Slayer CAST character for New Genesis. The upcoming crossover will also come with a Build Part that lets players place a poster of this artwork in their Creative Space.
Black Lagoon will fill the final 2023 collaboration slot for PSO2: New Genesis. When Sega published a roadmap for the second half of 2023, it included teasers for monthly crossovers featuring an Isekai anime, a new anime broadcast in 2023, a sci-fi anime, a sci-fi toy line, and an action anime. These titles were eventually revealed to be Uncle from Another World, Oshi no Ko, Spriggan, Frame Arms, and Black Lagoon.
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available worldwide on PC and PlayStation 4. The free-to-play online game is also playable on Nintendo Switch via a cloud version in Japan and on Xbox One elsewhere globally. The Black Lagoon crossover content will appear in December 2023.

A new visual novel starring Holostars English VTubers will appear on PCs, as the English official social media account for Hololive Production revealed that Doppelganger is in the works. A webpage for the visual novel also appeared on the newly established CCMC Corp itch.io.
People interested in playing this visual novel can place pre-orders on the site with a minimum price of $12.99. They can also add more funds to support the game's development team.
Doppelganger will star all six active Holostars English VTubers as of October 2023. Although Vesper Noir and Magni Dezmond are no longer with the group, Regis Altare and Axel Syrios have since been joined by Gavis Bettel, Machina X Flayon, Banzoin Hakka, and Josuiji Shinri.
As the title implies, the visual novel will feature doppelgangers of the six male VTubers. Each persona will be known respectively as the Demon King, Exiled Prince, Showman, Abandoned Automaton, Karasu Demon, and Huntsman. The game will have six routes focusing on each character, with an additional branch leading to the true ending.
The development team is using the visual novel engine Ren'Py to develop this title. It also placed a warning that Doppelganger will only be suitable for mature audiences, as it will include themes like violence, murder, suicide, and cannibalism.
Hololive announced the Holostars English visual novel Doppelganger will be available on PCs and star the six active English Vtubers. The game's developers also plan to release the title on Steam.

Bandai Namco and FromSoftware released the original soundtrack for Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon on multiple digital music platforms. People can now listen to Armored Core 6 tracks on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.
The Armored Core 6 digital soundtrack consists of 47 tracks totaling 130 minutes in duration. FromSoftware's Kota Hoshino composed most of the songs, with additional contributions coming from Takashi Onodera and Shoi Miyazawa. In just a few hours after its release, Kota Hoshino's "Contact With You" has become the soundtrack's most-played entry on YouTube Music with almost 300,000 clicks.
The Armored Core 6 soundtrack's official aggregate page also includes links to Japanese streaming sites Line Music and Awa other than Spotify and YouTube. Japanese residents can also opt to purchase a downloadable album from Mora and Recochoku in addition to iTunes Store and Amazon Music.
FromSoftware has been regularly releasing Armored Core 6 update patches to fix bugs and adjust the gameplay balance. On October 12, 2023, it released a new bug-fixing update that brings the game versions up to App Ver. 40 and Regulation Ver. 1.04. Players must apply the latest update version in order to continue accessing the mech action game's online modes.
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is immediately available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, and its soundtrack is on various services online now.

Nintendo announced the October 2023 additions to the Nintendo Switch Online library. The newest titles people can play on the Switch are Castlevania Legends (Game Boy), Devil World (NES) and The Mysterious Murasame Castle (NES).
Castlevania Legends was a Game Boy title originally conceived as a prequel to the entire Castlevania series before appearing on NIntendo Switch Online. You play as Sonia Belmont battling the first incarnation of Dracula in the series' classic style. Due to the game now being considered non-canon, it was left out of the Castlevania Collection released a few years ago.
Devil World is notable for being Shigeru Miyamoto's first console-only game. It's similar to Pac-Man, only instead of pellets, you're collecting crucifixes to defeat the devil. Its original NES release was blocked by Nintendo of America due to policies around religious imagery. This makes the Nintendo Switch Online release its debut in North America. The game's devil character has been seen in the Super Smash Bros series as an Assist Trophy.
The Mysterious Murasame Castle was originally released shortly after The Legend of Zelda in 1986 and shares a lot of similarities. You play as Takamaru, a samurai apprentice who is tasked with taking down four evil lords and an alien entity. While originally a Japan exclusive, this game later saw a worldwide 3DS Virtual Console release. Just like the Devil World antagonist, Takamaru has also appeared an Assist Trophy in the Super Smash Bros series.
While these are the October 2023 releases for the basic Nintendo Switch Online service, Mario Party 3 was also released separately recently for the higher-tier Expansion Pack.
All October 2023 additions are all available now through Nintendo Switch Online.

Kotobukiya announced it is now taking pre-orders for its Bishoujo Felicia Darkstalkers figure. The recolor model is expected to release in December 2023 in Japan for 16,500円 (~$109), with Big Bad Toy Store selling it for $154.99 in February 2024.
This is a limited edition version of the character. It features a black and orange color scheme for her outfit and paw pads, which extends to the base she's standing on. Instead of blue hair and eyes, she has purple ones instead. The pose is identical to the other variant, however, with only the color scheme changing for this version.
Here's a closer look at the figure with her box, as well as one from Kotobukiya showing it alongside the original version of the statue.
As a reminder, you can already find the standard version of the figure. Kotobukiya released that worldwide back in 2022. That featured the character in her standard white costume with blue hair. That collection also includes Morrigan and Lilith.
As a reminder, you can find the Darkstalkers games in Capcom Fighting Collection on the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. A Darkstalkers: Hsien-Ko comic also appeared at the beginning of October 2023.
The Kotobukiya Felicia Darkstalkers Bishoujo figure variant will appear in Japan in December 2023 and North America in February 2024.

Square Enix and Applibot announced two new FFVII Ever Crisis Halloween costumes and weapons for Zack and Glenn based on a werewolf and pumpkin. The new Weapon Featured Draw is now available, and its costumes can be obtained through the Stamp Card.
The new costumes for Zack and Glenn are called Black Hound and Pumpkinmare, respectively. The Black Hound costume gives wolf ears to Zack, as well as an orange hoodie and a black jacket with spikes. This could be a reference to Angeal referring to him as a "puppy" throughout Crisis Core FFVII. The Pumpkinmare costume gives Glenn a leather cape, full-head pumpkin mask, and an ornate top hat.
Meanwhile, Zack's new five-star weapon is the Black Whiskers sword, and Glenn's weapon is the Pumpkin Lamppost. You can take a better look at the new Werewolf Zack and Pumpkin Glenn costumes and weapons for the FFVII Ever Crisis Pumpkin Fest Halloween event here:
Additionally, Square Enix announced earlier on October 18, 2023 that Aerith would be receiving a new limited-time Pumpkin Fest Halloween Event costume based on a Chocobo, as well as a new weapon.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available on mobile devices, and the Pumpkin Fest Halloween event runs October 19, 2023 through November 2, 2023. The game will eventually come out on PC.

Bandai announced new room wear apparel based on the uniforms used worn in Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Pre-orders for the uniform room wear are now available until November 29, 2023 from the Premium Bandai online store. [Thanks, Game Watch!]
The new room wear is based on the uniforms that students of the Asticassia School of Technology use in the latest Gundam anime series. They are available in two models, a green and black model with red accents, and a white and black one with gold accents.
Both uniform models cost 13,200 yen (or approximately $88). The new uniforms are unisex, and they are available in M, L, and XL sizes. You can take a better look at the new Gundam: The Witch from Mercury room wear uniforms in the gallery below:
In other recent Gundam: The Witch from Mercury news, MegaHouse recently revealed a new 1/8 scale figure of Suletta Mercury. Pre-orders for the figure are now available, and it will release in late June 2024.

People won't need to wait for Deltarune Chapter 5 to release before getting to play Chapters 3 and 4. Toby Fox's Halloween 2023 newsletter confirmed 3 and 4 will be available to purchase when 4 is finished.
The newsletter began with an update on Deltarune Chapter 3. This is the first since the September 2023 update that went over the removed stealth section. Fox described it as "content complete" and also said that someone already played through the chapter from beginning to end in its current state.
After the update about Chapter 3 being complete, Fox went over why the plan changed from releasing it at the same time as Chapters 4 and 5. Fox specifically said, "My original plan was to release Chapter 3, 4, and 5 together. However, the finish line of Chapter 5 is still pretty far off... and I don't think anybody really wants to wait that long to release anything. Especially me."
As for the Deltarune Chapter 4 update, there's a new producer working on it and both some cutscenes and enemies are done.
Deltarune Chapter 2 arrived on consoles and PCs back in September 2021. While the first two chapters were free, the third, fourth, and fifth ones will cost money.
Deltarune Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are in development for PCs and other platforms. People can sign up for the official mailing list on the website for additional updates.

Square Enix announced a new collection of Final Fantasy XIV reed diffusers based on cities that appear in FFXIV. They alongside the return of older fragrances.
Each room fragrance costs 4,180 yen (or about $28) each, and they will release in Japan on December 16, 2023. They are now available for pre-order from the Japanese Square Enix online e-store.
The boxes and bottles are decorated with motifs from the cities they are inspired after, taken from their flags. Here is the list of FFXIV cities available, and the fragrances corresponding to each one of the Final Fantasy XIV reed diffusers:

Atlus West released a new Persona 3 Reload trailer introducing Mitsuru Kirijo, the refined and erudite heiress of the Kirijo Group. She is a third-year student and student council president at Gekkoukan High School, as well as the leader and organizer of the S.E.E.S. team.
The new trailer for Persona 3 Reload introduced audiences to Mitsuru's new voice actor Allegra Clark, who is best known for her roles in Fire Emblem: Three Houses as Dorothea, Street Fighter 6 as Marisa, Jujutsu Kaisen as Maki, and Dragon Age: Inquisition as Josephine. Many scenes with her new voice actor can be heard in the trailer, highlighting key story events as well as some humorous moments between Mitsuru and the hero in her Social Link.
The trailer also showed off in-game combat with Mitsuru's Persona Penthesilea, in particular when using the ice spell Mabufula. The character introduction trailer also shows Mitsuru in her brand new S.E.E.S. outfit as she completes a special attack against weakened enemies.

HoYoverse set a new time and date for the rescheduled Genshin Impact Special Program 4.2. It will now air at 5:10am PT/8:10am ET/2:10pm CET on November 3, 2023.
As a reminder, the Genshin Impact stream was supposed to appear on October 27, 2023. The company abruptly delayed it a few hours before the airdate. It didn't offer any explanation for the postponement at the time. Sony's official social media account even shared a scheduled post with screenshots and the November 8, 2023 launch date for 4.2.
The presentation will appear on Twitch first, as usual. Then an hour after that, people will be able to catch a rebroadcast of it on YouTube. The official art on the new social media post still shows Lumine, Furina, and Neuvillette, suggesting all three will be the hosts of the showcase.
We do already know some details about what's to come. Both Furina, the Hydro Archon, and Charlotte will be new playable characters following the update. Both already appeared in the game as NPCs.
Note that this will be a busy day. The Honkai: Star Rail Special Program for 1.5 will also air on November 3, 2023. That will appear before the Genshin Impact one, however.
Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Special Program for 4.2 will air on November 3, 2023 at 5:10am PT/8:10am ET/2:10pm CET.

HoYoVerse teased the upcoming Version 1.6 characters for Honkai: Star Rail, and we'll be able to pull for Ruan Mei, Dr Ratio, and Xueyi in the future. Art for all three appeared.
Of the above three, Ruan Mei and Dr Ratio will be the five-stars. Meanwhile, Xueyi will be a four-star. Ruan Mei will be Ice Harmony and Dr. Ratio will be Imaginary Hunt. Xueyi will be Quantum Destruction. Both Ruan Mei and Xue Yi have technically appeared in the game already as NPCs, though players did not get the chance to directly meet with Ruan Mei. So far, there is no official information yet regarding their kits.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Ruan Mei, Dr Ratio, and Xueyi will make their playable debuts in Honkai: Star Rail Version 1.6. A special program that'll give more information on the next update, Version 1.5, will air on November 3, 2023.

Nintendo unveiled the sign for its upcoming Nintendo Museum. The sign looks like the present day Nintendo logo, with the word "Museum" underneath it. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
The company uploaded the image of the Nintendo Museum on its Instagram account. When it finishes in late March 2024, you'll be able to go in and check out all of the products that Nintendo released in the past. This will likely include consoles (much like the display in the Nintendo shop in New York) and accessories like R.O.B. There is also a ? Block on top of the roof. Nintendo first unveiled this aspect of the building in its September 14, 2023 Nintendo Direct stream.
News of the museum and gallery first appeared in 2021. Nintendo is building it in Uji, Kyoto. The reason why it's building it in Kyoto is likely due to the fact that Nintendo opened its first HQ in Kyoto back in 1889. Back then, Nintendo made hanafuda cards and playing cards. There's a chance that the museum and gallery will also introduce that aspect of Nintendo's history, instead of simply starting from its video game ventures. For reference, Nintendo first started working on video games in 1972.
The Nintendo Museum should finish construction in March 2024.

Since Sony acquired them in 2019 they've released two successful console titles in Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, plus a solid VR title in Stormlands and a remaster of their first Spider-Man game. Now, five years after the first one, they've released Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and will follow up in a year or two with a Wolverine game as well which I have no doubt is going to be excellent. Not only are Insomniac delivering high-quality videogames, but they are doing it with a level of consistency that is arguably unmatched. |
