PCGamesN Tuesday, April 16, 2024 9:05 AM Originally released in 2017 as a free-to-play game, the 5v5 hero shooter and MOBA hybrid Gigantic has become a cult classic of sorts, changing up the hero shooter format by combining it with MOBA elements to create a legitimately unique experience, even when compared to later competitors like Overwatch and Valorant. Splitting matches into two phases – an objective based, familiarly King of the Hill-esque phase followed by a more MOBA-inspired space-control Rampage phase – was novel, and nothing has been similar since. When Gigantic was shuttered by Gearbox in 2018, it was a loss for the genre and fans of the game made their feelings clear online that it was sorely missed – that was, until its eventual relaunch. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, April 16, 2024 11:45 AM Years before she worked on top-drawer point-and-clickers Return To Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park, Australian game developer Jenn Sandercock was a junior designer on Team Bondi's historical open world game L.A. Noire. Eventually published by Grand Theft Auto developers Rockstar in 2011, L.A. Noire took seven years to make and is an especially notorious example of crunch culture and mismanagement. Sandercock joined in the middle of one such crunch period, and wanted to make life a little easier for her exhausted colleagues. "Everyone looked so miserable after literally years of hard work & crunch," she wrote on Twitter in 2018. "So late one night after work I baked 2 cakes for the office. I sent out a mass email & we all took 30 minutes to eat cake and talk." Sandercock began hosting weekly "Cake Days", baking a fresh batch in her own time to share around the office. Rockstar were unimpressed, however. They thought Cake Day was evidence of poor productivity and, according to Sandercock, badgered Team Bondi leadership into forcing her to only share cake during official lunch hours. "Apparently the higher ups thought our entire office slacked off ALL the time because we had cake once a week," Sandercock wrote. She herself was told "that I was jeopardising my career". Sandercock hasn't let the demise of Cake Day cramp her creative interest in food, however. In fact, she's found a way to combine baking with game design. Sandercock is now the author of Edible Games, a book of recipes and instructions for concocting games out of food, and food out of games. |

Kotobukiya revealed that it will restock its model kit featuring the Orbital Frame Dolores from Zone of the Enders: Dolores, i. The new batch will appear in November 2024. People can immediately place pre-orders on Japanese online hobby storefronts at 8,250 yen (~$53.40). [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]
This model kit previously appeared as early as 2014. The non-scale kit will stand at around 18 cm (~7.08 inches) tall when completed. But due to how the legs are shaped, the finished kit cannot stand on its own and the owner must attach it to the stand for most of the poses.
Kotobukiya modeled the kit after the protagonist's Orbital Frame that appeared in the Zone of the Enders series' second anime adaptation by Sunrise. Z.O.E. Dolores, i is the sequel to the 2001 OVA Z.O.E. 2167 Idolo that aired in Japanese television in the same year.
Here are some of the sample images for the Dolores model kit:
Kotobukiya has been on a roll in restocking its model kits from Konami's franchises. The company has re-released the model kit of the Zone of the Enders games' protagonist Orbital Frame Jehuty in late March 2024, and its archnemesis Anubis will follow suit in May 2024. It will also restock the model kit of Metal Gear REX from Metal Gear Solid on April 18, 2024.

There are a lot of indie Metroidvanias out there, to the point where it can be hard for any of them to stand out. To solve this problem, Biomorph comes with a unique gimmick: you can transform into most of the creatures you defeat, using their unique abilities to progress.
It's an interesting concept, and it gets put to work relatively quickly. After defeating a grim calcified elk creature, our protagonist absorbs its essence in an animated cutscene. Immediately after, he finds that he can use the creature's solid hide to charge through some debris and open an exit. You'll use a few of these, as well as a brutish amalgamation whose punch has similar effects, to escape the opening prologue.
How can the protagonist do this? Honestly, he's not sure. Hi name is Harlo, a cat-like alien who looks like a moody Ratchet with bionic Rayman hands. He wakes up in a strange facility and remembers nothing about how he got there or where he came from. He realizes that a friend is trapped in a cell, attempts a rescue, and ends up exploding out into a wider world. As the game progresses, Harlo seeks to save his friend, recover his memories and help rebuild a derelict village in the process.
The structure of Biomorph is exactly what you'd expect from any given Metroidvania. Following the prologue, you find yourself in the village of Blightmoor, a run-down port town. From here, Harlo can explore a large world, find new abilities, and then travel down new paths with those abilities. If you've played any game in the genre, you know how this works.
Biomorph starts strong. Using creature abilities to smash open routes in the opening prologue is a great mechanic, which only opens more possibilities once you're in the main world. One creature fires a projectile which can be used to activate faraway switches. Another can casually walk on spikes, allowing you access to areas that would otherwise harm you. Later on, you'll encounter creatures that can slither through tight passages, manifest their own platforms or teleport using dirt patches.
While a creature's ability can initially only be used where you find the creature, absorbing enough unique creatures of that type will grant you access to their form permanently. You can equip up to three of these forms at any given time, allowing you to use their abilities anywhere in the world. It's a great concept that opens so many possibilities, so it's real shame that Biomorph does not use it to its full potential.
Metroidvanias have a well-established progression system at this point. You follow whatever paths you can currently access, find a terminal or an item that grants you a new ability, then find where that ability can be used. Biomorph could have easily shaken this formula up with its core mechanic. The idea that you have to go hunting for creatures to gain new abilities would have put a great spin on the entire genre. Problem is, I found myself rarely using creature abilities outside the areas they were found in. Instead, gaining new abilities that opened wider paths was just the standard Metroidvania progression. You find weird capsules, they give Harlo an ability, you move on.
It was honestly a huge disappointment, especially after the game's strong start. There was even an area teased in the prologue that couldn't be accessed because it was covered in spikes. I returned later with the creature that could get past this, gained an item and thought this would be how things went for the whole game. However, moments like these were few and far between and I could probably count on one hand how many times I reached into my bag and pulled out a creature ability as the world got more expansive.
Speaking of the world being expansive, this is where another of Biomorph's other main problems arose. Harlo is slow, but the world is vast. There are little to no movement mechanics to speak of, making traversal a tedious slog of holding right and occasionally jumping. The problem is, this is a Metroidvania, so not only is there a lot of traversal, there is also a lot of backtracking, so you get to slog back through those huge areas repeatedly.
This also creates a problem about halfway through the game, where a vast expanse becomes open to you, with every area offering at least four ways to go. Which in turn offer another three ways to go, and so on. It becomes a vast maze of expansive maps that take too long to navigate, leaving you lost.
Navigation also goes out the window, as the game throws quest markers at you, but any attempt to follow them is quickly defeated by routes that turn back on themselves. Not just in the sense of routes changing direction, but actively teleporting you to a different part of the map, nowhere near where you thought you were heading. It made exploration annoying, as nothing in the world lined up in the way I'd expect it to. Heading towards somewhere I thought would be interesting ended up with me being thrown off course entirely at every turn. It led progression to feel aimless and random.
Biomorph starts so strong in its opening few hours. Some solid mechanics and a unique gimmick, along with some well-designed opening areas, made those initial hours a lot of fun. The visual style is also great, with the occasional animated cutscene adding a ton of vibrance to the presentation. I even like the NPCs you encounter throughout the world, with all their weird designs and unique motivations. But Biomorph rapidly loses momentum after a certain point and it's a real shame.
I wanted to like Biomorph more than I did. Despite good visuals and a strong start, it eventually neglects its most interesting mechanic and becomes tedious. In the end, despite its best efforts, it ends up being just an average attempt at an already crowded genre.
Biomorph is out now for PC. A console version is in development.

A notable SaGa series character named Mr. S will appear in SaGa Emerald Beyond, and Square Enix shared new screenshots and insights into what he does in-game. Someone could take on Mr. S' Trials or essentially use him as a move tutor.
One part of the benefits tied to Mr. S involves his trials. These give you items and point rewards if you finish them. The screenshots show one situation where a player with a Trial Rank of 1 takes on the 150% Combo Rate, Clean Sweep, and Preemptive Execution trials. After completing them, the person gets an Ironstone, five Spirit Stones, and four Trial Point Rewards.
The other screenshots show Mr. S' Tutelage option. Someone can set him as a tutor for characters to help them learn abilities. This way even if they aren't with us when we go into fights, they still master skills and can then become tutors for them. So in the one screenshot, we see how under Mr. S, his pupils could get a "license" for an ability after the player goes through a certain number of battles. The other screen shows the Tutelage Regimen that reveals which skills the character would learn.
Here are the SaGa Emerald Beyond screenshots showing the character in action:
As a reminder, Mr. S is a SaGa series staple and the most notable past appearance is as the player's teacher in Final Fantasy Legend II (SaGa 2: Hihou Densetsu). People could see him and play that entry most recently in Collection of Saga on the Switch, PC, and mobile devices.
SaGa Emerald Beyond is in development and will head to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices on April 25, 2024. The demo is available now on the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

Supergiant Games opened the ability for PC players to sign up for the Hades II Technical Test on Steam. There's no word yet on when the beta for the roguelike will begin, beyond "soon," and there's no end date for requesting access to the test at the moment.
There aren't too many details about how this Technical Test will go. Supergiant did note there could be "rounds" of invites, which would mean some people would get an email allowing them access once the trial is live. It also noted it will include the "first major area."
Length and launch dates also came up during the announcement. The Supergiant said people who get into the Hades II Technical Test will find it is "longer than a week, shorter than a month." They also said that the findings from the test will affect the launch date of the early access phase.
The one thing that is certain is the PC requirements for those of us who want to participate. Here's what they are:
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Processor: Dual Core 2.4 Ghz
Memory: 4GB RAM
Graphics: 2GB VRAM / DirectX 12+ support
Hades II will enter early access on Steam in Q2 2024, and the PC Technical Test will begin "soon."

Kotobukiya has released a new batch of its 1/400 scale Evangelion Unit 13 model kit on April 16, 2024. People who have placed pre-orders since the company announced the new restocks in September 2023 can expect to have their items shipped in the coming days. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]
Kotobukiya designed this model kit after the Evangelion Unit 13 that appeared in the 2012 movie Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. The 1/400 scale kit will stand at around 19 cm (~7.48 inches) when completed. The kit first appeared in late 2014, and Kotobukiya has since restocked the product multiple times, including in 2020. In early September 2023, the company announced the latest batch for the model kit with April 2024 as its release window.
In September 2014, GA Graphic uploaded a video showing a prototype of the model kit ahead of its first release in November 2014:
Unit 13 is not the only mech-related Evangelion merchandise to (re-)appear in 2024. Good Smile Company sold a limited number of metallic Unit 01 Moderoid kits in January 2024. CCSToys' Mortal Mind action figure of the Evangelion Final Model from the Evangelion Anima novels has also appeared on the franchise's official web store.
The 1/400 scale model kit of Evangelion Unit 13 from Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is available to order from Kotobukiya and other partner retailers while stocks last.

Sensor Tower Japan reported that Aladdin X's official iOS release of Suika Game has generated a revenue of almost $2 million. The game made the feat in the first three months after its release in the App Store on January 1, 2024.
Sensor Tower also produced a chart showing the monthly increase in the game's total revenue. Aladdin X had even already surpassed the $1 million mark within the iOS version's release month in January 2024.
Suika Game is available as a paid app where people have to first spend 240 yen to access it. Despite the prevalence of free-to-play apps in recent times, that still did not deter people from purchasing the game's iOS version. In fact, it even ended up dominating the App Store's paid game ranking.
Another chart from Sensor Tower shows that the iPhone version of Suika Game kept first place for almost the entirety of Q1 2024—save for two days on February 21-22, 2024, when Side Labs' Coffee Inc 2 claimed the spot. Meanwhile, the iPad version never went below the top 3 ranking spots in the same quarter.
The Android version of Suika Game did not come out until April 2024, but that did not stop the then-iOS-exclusive game from competing with free-to-play apps that are available on both platforms.
In the mobile casual game revenue ranking for Q1 2024, Suika Game reached fifth place behind Toon Blast, Royal Match, Brawl Stars, and Magic Card: Catch the Thief. Suika Game was also the only other Japanese mobile bubble shooting game to generate substantial revenue after Line Bubble 2 in the same period.
Suika Game is officially available on Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, and Aladdin X's popIn Aladdin ceiling projectors.

There's new insight into the people we'll meet in the FFXVI Rising Tide DLC, as Square Enix offered official art and brief character profiles for two characters. One first debuted in the Echoes of the Fallen add-on, while the other is an entirely new individual.
First, Square Enix brought up Famiel. This character is someone Clive and Jill encountered a few times when exploring the Sagespire dungeon and going toward Omega. The company didn't note what the character is doing in Mysidia, but did reference his past as a Dusk Crystal trader.
After that, Shula appeared. This is an entirely new character who appears in the DLC. There are few details about this new person, with the company only noting Clive and Shula meet once Clive and his crew reaches Mysidia and that they team up. This person also appeared in one of the latest screenshots from the add-on shared on social media.
This peek at the two FFXVI Rising Tide DLC characters is only one of multiple peeks at the add-on ahead of its launch. Square Enix has also been sharing an array of screenshots. Some focused on the new location of Mysidia, which people can visit after reaching a certain point in the story as part of a quest to reach Leviathan's Dominant. Another showed Clive heading into battle against a type of Tonberry and what may be one of the expansion's bosses.
Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PS5, with the Echoes of the Fallen DLC out now. The Rising Tide DLC will appear on April 18, 2024. A PC version of the game is also on the way.
