Not only is it a fun, well-designed arcade shooter, it seemed to have got off to a good start with its community, responding to feedback and keeping lines of communication open. Recently, however, the community sentiment has turned for the worse, with a souring of feeling among fans. With this coinciding with the game's Twitch viewers plummeting, it looks like XDefiant is beginning to struggle.

Fallout New Vegas dev Obsidian almost quit making this new game

With great talent retention and an impressive conveyor belt of games over recent years, Obsidian is widely regarded as a developer that has, for want of a better phrase, got its shit together. However, in a new interview, studio head Feargus Urquhart says that for a while after its acquisition by Microsoft, it was "a crappy developer" that was struggling to handle its multiple projects. He also says that Obsidian considered halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus efforts on its fantasy RPG Avowed instead.

Metropolis 1998 is a new 'sequel' to SimCity and Rollercoaster Tycoon

Keep your Unreal Engine 5, your ray-tracing, and your 4K resolutions - videogames have never looked better than Rollercoaster Tycoon and SimCity 2000. It's not about fidelity. It's the colors, the lines, and the intricate details juxtaposed with the playful abstractions of pixel art. Metropolis 1998 is a visual throwback, antithetical to the complex, realistic visuals of Cities Skylines 2, but it's maybe the most gorgeous game I've seen this year. A city builder in the classic Maxis style, and directly inspired by Chris Sawyer's epochal amusement park sim, with a new demo available now, PCGamesN speaks exclusively to Metropolis 1998's creator about marrying beautiful retro graphics with modern systems and original mechanics.

blue exorcist beyond the snow saga

A new trailer has come out for Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga. This time, it features the ending theme.

Singer Yobahi will perform the ending for Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga. The song is "Tsurara," which can literally translate to "Icicle." In a Twitter post, we can see that "Tsurara" focuses on Yukio's emotions. It describes Yukio's heart as one that's cold and sharp like an icicle despite his awkward love and affection for his brother. Nakatsu, who's both vocalist and songwriter for Yobahi, states that he wrote the song in hopes that it can warm up someone who's like Yukio. As for Nagare, the guitarist, he states that he's been a long-time fan of Blue Exorcist. He's honored that he can work on the show as part of his band.

You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW6VHxT6DPU

The trailer is very short, showing only brief clips of the characters. The most important part of the trailer is right at the very beginning, showing Yukio glaring out the window. Rin's voice-over assures Yukio that he can always count on his older brother. However, those who read the manga may know that Yukio's not the type who would do that.

Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga will start airing on October 5, 2024. The previous season, Shimane Illuminati Saga, is available on Crunchyroll.

genshin impact neuvillette teacup

The official miHoYo Taobao store will sell a teacup set based on Neuvillette from Genshin Impact. It will be available from August 15, 2024 and they'll ship out some time in mid-September 2024.

The Neuvillette Genshin Impact teacup costs 215 CNY, which would be around $30.05. It's white-and-blue and comes with two accessories. The first accessory is a stirring stick that has a ribbon-like charm at the end. The other one is a tea leaf strainer that resembles a shell. There is an otter at the other end of the shell, which can hold onto the rim of the cup. This can serve as decoration or as a way to prevent the strainer from falling completely inside of your tea.

Here are some more pictures of the teacup:

Other items that the miHoYo Taobao store has sold include fashion accessories based on the Sumeru men, an itabag in the shape of a Blubberbeast, and pet hoods that resemble various characters or critters from the game. Some of these items are available via proxy service if you don't have a Taobao account or aren't sure how to navigate the site.

Genshin Impact is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

palworld server

In an interview with Famitsu, Pocketpair developers working on Palworld discussed issues regarding the heavy server load. Future plans for the game include a better server to allow for more players, as well as cross-platform play. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

The interview starts with a brief summary of how Pocketpair only has a small team and how the game reached significant popularity shortly after launch. The developers reminisce on how they didn't expect how big the game would get and how they were obliviously happy about it. Once the game actually came out though, things with the network weren't working as well as they anticipated. With so many people playing at once, issues like the multiplayer mode freezing plagued the server. They spent a lot of time dealing with network problems.

The Famitsu interview then brought up how CEO Takurou Mizobe posted a half-joking Tweet in February 2024 that server costs would bankrupt the company. At the time, this was because the server cost for February was 70,530,000 JPY, or $480,499.75. Pocketpair explained that most of that money was data costs. The more players connect to the server, the higher the data costs. Pocketpair plans on optimizing the server so that it won't cost as much in the future. This will also help them implement cross-platform play in the future.

Finally, the interview included a spot where the developers could talk about what they're most proud of. They stated that they're most happy with the multi-player system. Relatively speaking, the servers were very stable at launch and the lobby is easy to navigate. All of the information is right there on one screen, which is very rare for Japanese titles.

More information on cross-platform play will appear in the future. Palworld is readily available on the Xbox Series X, Xbox One, macOS, and Windows PC.

final fantasy vii rebirth graphics

CGWorld is running a four-part interview with Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi to discuss how the power of the PS5 helped with the graphics and assets of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (FFVII Rebirth). Today's interview focuses on the map, open world, and the sheer volume of the game. [Thanks, CGWorld!]

To answer a question about graphics, Hamaguchi stated that the team really focused on the world map for FFVII Rebirth. This is because the world map was quite rough in the original and they wanted players to think, "Oh, so that's what it's supposed to look like" when they play the game. For this entry, they focused on increasing the density and number of assets that would appear on-screen. When physical copies were the norm, the game could load all of the assets at once and the players would just wander around a completed world. However, for Rebirth, the game would only load assets into whatever screen the player is looking at. This allows for more assets to appear at once without overloading the system.

Hamaguchi also described how Square Enix developed both Rebirth and Intergrade at the same time. Rebirth was in development for four years, with only the first year being simultaneous with Intergrade. Doing this allowed the team to use what they learned and innovated with Intergrade in Rebirth, as well as tested out things they wanted to try. Since the team members are pretty much the same people who worked on Final Fantasy VII Remake, it went smoothly. Even when people were working at home during COVID-19 quarantine, they'd set up an efficient chain of command that they still used for Rebirth.

Finally, they discussed the open world aspect of the game and how it affected development. Hamaguchi stated that it was really difficult to combine the vast world map, the main story, and the freedom of open world. He believes the game about 30 times in order to find issues or things to add. Because each QA playthrough can take over 100 hours, they decided on something to look for in advance.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is readily available on the PS5. You can read our review of it here.
