First in a trilogy of thriller mysteries, it featured writing that was a cut above Sierra On-Line's usual fare, puzzles that veered on the side of sensible investigations rather than moon logic, and a glorious bastard of a Cajun protagonist. The Kathy Rain series owes much to Gabriel Knight. Swap the '90s-era New Orleans author for a '90s-era biker chick/journalism student, replace the voodoo killings with a conspiracy involving the death of a grandparent, and you have the first Kathy Rain, which was released in 2016 and boasted the generic-but-still-memorable tagline: "A Detective is Born". But despite receiving fair praise from John back in the day, Kathy's first outing had a murky plot about cults, trauma, small town disappearances, and Elder Gods that was only made understandable via a spruced up Director's Cut in 2021. Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer, I'm happy to report, needs no such re-release, though anyone who hasn't completed the first game is bound to still be a little confused. |

CD Projekt revealed the name change in their latest earnings results, according to which the new Cyberpunk RPG has just entered pre-production - roughly defined, the point in a game's gestation when designers, artists, programmers and so forth meet to flesh out the concept, but before they've actually started making anything that's supposed to form part of the finished game. There are now 96 people working on the thing, versus 422 for The Witcher 4, 49 on multiplayer Witcher spin-off Project Sirius, and 19 for an unannounced original game, Project Hadar. The grousing, dilettante reader will object that this is scant material for a news post, especially given that CD Projekt are offering no guarantees that "Cyberpunk 2" will be the project's final name - as they commented to the Verge, Cyberpunk 2 "just means it's another game in the Cyberpunk universe." But the dextrous maven of online news-mongering will notice that "Cyberpunk 2" is, in fact, an extremely compact and subtle piece of worldbuilding. |

At the start of each combat encounter, the demo for this roguelite hack n' slash hands you several numeric cards and lets you pause the game to view both your and your enemies' stats: health, damage, and durability. You then drag the cards on to the relevant stat to modify it, then unpause to continue real-time combat. It's a cute gimmick, letting you knock down high health enemies to a manageable number, or kill weak ones outright, or heal yourself. But it felt a tad shallow to carry a whole game, even one with dodges and parries in its real-time combat. Then, I entered a room with a trap tile that thrust sharpened spikes upwards at timed intervals, and realised I could manipulate the timer. I tuned it right down, and raucously chortled like a portly racoon at the bakery bins as it pneumatically skewered my idiot attackers. |

It's not every day you get to talk to someone as well-known and liked in the indie scene like Toby Fox, but thanks to some wizardry and a sprinkle of luck, we managed to ask Toby a couple of questions recently ahead of the release of Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4 on June 5.
Toby was to the point with his answers, especially in one area where we were keen to find out more information on, with that, of course, being Indie games. More importantly, some of his favorite indie games that were recently released or are coming out soon, and he did not disappoint.
But instead of keeping some of those suggestions to ourselves, we thought we would share with you his shout-outs and decisions, so you can go out there and try them for yourselves to see if they match your tastes!
So, without further ado, let us begin.
ENA: Dream BBQ
ENA: Dream BBQ was the first game Toby bought up, and it was one I hadn't heard of until then. It's an episodic adventure game that follows a humanoid exploring various environments while interacting with other characters to complete tasks and solve mazes, all to reach this mysterious Boss character that centres around the narrative.
Balatro
Balatro was the next one, which was no surprise considering how popular the rogue-like card game has become over the past year. It's a game that needs to be played to be understood, so give it a go if you haven't already. It's also on Xbox Game Pass!
UFO50
The third big shoutout surprised us when Toby mentioned UFO50, a collection of 50 single and multiplayer games that span a variety of genres. There is something for everyone on it, for sure, and is great for on-the-go micro games when you want to pick up and play something for a small amount of time.
Soul of Soverignity
And lastly, Toby felt like he had to mention the visual novel Soul of Sovereignity, made by one of his friends. He was a bit coy, though, only mentioning that he "can't wait to see how the story will continue..." before ominously slipping back into the shadows. What aren't you telling us, Toby!?
The game is currently in development and is a linear (no choices) adventure that is intended for a mature audience with stunning visuals. One to check out!
