Spell-fusing action roguelike Magicraft surges on Steam with 1.0 launch

Precisely one year since its early access launch, spell-fusing roguelike Magicraft has launched version 1.0 on Steam, and it's fast proving to be a winner. It takes the bullet hell style of games like The Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon and introduces a clever spellcrafting system reminiscent of Noita to allow you to create all manner of powerful skills. With an impressive visual art update, a fifth chapter, and plenty of new spells, relics, and gear sets to further amplify the variety of your builds, the full launch is a great time to try it out, and plenty of players have already done just that.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix splits players over its artist POI takeovers

Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix is here, but it doesn't have everyone enthralled. While it brings back that chapter's beloved map, the community is split on just how Epic has implemented the revival. Multiple points of interest are steadily being taken over by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Ice Spice, revamping their visuals and offering new challenges. While some POI changes are yet to come, many are already frustrated with Chapter 2 Remix's focus on musicians, and what they mean for this chance to revisit the old-school map.

TFT's new event is an Arcane inspired fiesta that brings back its best mode

Arcane Season 2 is almost here. We've been waiting for it since 2021, champing at the bit to see what happens to Piltover as Jinx's Super Mega Death Rocket crashes into the council's chambers. Does Mel survive? Does Yasuo arrive and Wind Wall it at the last second and save the world? While that latter one is never going to happen in the series, Teamfight Tactics: Into the Arcane promises to let me live out my bizarre, memey fan fiction, and I can't wait.

One of the best roguelikes ever and two top 2023 RPGs leave PC Game Pass soon

The launch of Black Ops 6 has brought a wealth of new subscribers to PC Game Pass, and that opens up the potential to a vast library of games that you can play for free as part of the deal. Whether you've just recently signed up or you're a long-term subscriber, it's good to keep a close eye on what's available. Unfortunately, games don't stay on Game Pass forever, and some heavy hitters have now been confirmed to be leaving the service very soon, including two top RPGs from 2023 and one of my favorite roguelikes of all time.

Assassin's Creed Shadows delay a chance to

Ubisoft hopes the recent Assassin's Creed Shadows delay will help "change the narrative" around the developer, while also addressing the perceived inconsistency of its releases. With Shadows coming off the back of an incredibly tough 2024 for Ubisoft, the studio is doing all it can to right the ship with its most well-known series. Both Prince of Persia The Lost Crown and Star Wars Outlaws didn't meet Ubisoft's expectations this year, so the studio is changing its strategy with Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Capcom assures that the Monster Hunter Wilds launch will improve on the beta

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta hasn't been going down well on PC. While it's attracted a colossal number of players, there are myriad reports of crashes, bugs, and graphical problems across the board. The full launch is still four months away, though, and Capcom is assuring us that we'll be playing a very different game come 2025. If you've been playing on PC, that might look like a pretty tall order. I wouldn't worry about your beta experience too much, though, because there are already a handful of fixes for all those PS1-looking faces.

Fortnite server status and extended downtime

Are the Fortnite servers down? While the downtime between patches and season changes is usually predictable, there are occasions when something more serious has occurred, warranting prolonged maintenance.

Any downtime in Fortnite is annoying, particularly if you've only got a few hours in the day to play the battle royale game, but the servers can go down at any point. If that is the case right now, you can always check out the latest Fortnite map or Fortnite weapons to discover the new meta.      Hades style King Arthur roguelike Sworn now has a free demo, but not for long

I played an hour of Sworn at Gamescom, and I didn't want to put it down. Of all the many new roguelike games following in the powerful footsteps of Supergiant's Hades, the Arthurian spin on the format from Windwalk Games and Team17 is one of the closest to its inspiration mechanically. Yet that's certainly no bad thing, and with a fantastic amount of build variety, excellent art design, the option to play in co-op multiplayer with a group of up to four, and a pitch-perfect choice of setting, Sworn has my attention. If you're curious, you can try it for free on Steam right now, but you'll need to be fast.

HoloX Meeting Manga Lets Us Savor Hololive Vtubers Successes

The HoloX Meeting manga's first volume focused on introducing the Hololive Vtubers, as it gave Laplus Darknesss, Hakui Koyori, Kazama Iroha, Sakamata Chloe, Takane Lui dedicated chapters. It allowed us to get comfortable with these versions of them and know them based on "lore," in the event they're new to us. We learned about their organization's goal. We maybe even started to root for them. Now in the second volume, we get to see a pay-off and appreciate them more as a whole as they work toward achieving their dream of success.

Editor's Note: There are minor spoilers for volume 2 of the HoloX Meeting Hololive manga below.

As I mentioned before, the first volume of HoloX Meeting was more about establishing each of the Hololive Vtubers' characteristics and roles in the "world domination organization," rather than actually making progress. Yes, some ideas did come up and the group made strides to take over. But it was more about seeing everyone through newcomer Chloe's eyes than anything else. It wasn't until the very end that we saw them enter a singing contest to build themselves up. The introduction for volume 2, appropriately enough, shows it not going exactly as planned!

So what do they do? Well, HoloX leader Laplus decides to "fight back." Because these unknown individuals won, they ended up getting a lot of criticism online. She abhors the thought that people don't recognize her associates/friends' talents, so… they put on another show. This time, it's to prove that yes, they are that talented. Yes, they deserve the attention and success. And… it works.

Which means we get to enjoy some really fun antics for the rest of the HoloX Meeting volume, because now it can focus on the five Hololive Vtubers in fun situations. There are still times when one character will be the focus. For example, Iroha is the point person for the maid cafe "episode." But because the initial volume got over the introductory elements, we can now enjoy seeing personalities play off of each other and how they handle certain situations. Also, because they are suddenly a success and popular, there is that freedom to depict silly situations and have them make sense.

This all leads into a fun original story and an interesting omake section. Because the actions throughout this volume lead to them being discovered. And because this series ends with that recruitment, we get to actually acknowledge their Vtuber personas beyond the backstory and lore-related elements here. I really appreciated the interviews with the actual performers especially, as it's a fun way to cap things off and close them out.

The HoloX Meeting manga really turned out to be a fun setup for these five Hololive Vtubers. It tells their origin story in an engaging way. We get to see how well the personalities and established background really lend themselves to a comedic, slice-of-life tale. Plus, once it closes out, there are those additional ties to the performers both in the way this story ends and the bonus content that allowed them to "speak up."

Both volume 1 and 2 of the HoloX Meeting manga are available outside Japan via Yen Press, and the Hololive Vtubers Laplus Darknesss, Hakui Koyori, Kazama Iroha, Sakamata Chloe, Takane Lui are all active and streaming on YouTube.

Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly 2 Prioritizes Yuuki, Aiko, and Merida

The Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga volumes focus heavily on relationships in the SAO series. For example, much of the first volume focuses on Kirito and Asuna. While we do see the two of them and their closest allies featured heavily in a continuing story in the first part of the second volume, I feel like another one really steals the show. Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly volume 2 marks the debut of the manga adaptation of the Sisters' Prayer storyline, doing a wonderful job of telling Yuuki, Aiko, and Merida's story and showing another side to FullDive VR games and experiences.

Editor's Note: There will be some spoilers for the first part of the Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga volume 2 "Sisters' Prayer" storyline and the characters Yuuki, Aiko, and Merida below.

In the main Sword Art Online series, we hear about the life-threatening SAO incident that resulted in real-world deaths, but the "Sisters' Prayer" tale looks at another way in which the FullDive VR games can affect people's lives. The second half of volume 2 of the Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga introduces the new retelling of this story. Yuuki and Aiko are terminally ill sisters who essentially live in the hospital, with Aiko having sacrificed a chance to experience more advanced, experimental Medicuboid FullDive technology so her sister can be in a safer environment. The two inhabit a Serene Garden hospice VR world. It's peaceful, with no combat or risk.

So as we're first introduced to the situation, we're seeing these two young women dealing with the knowledge that the person behind the systems they are using and experience they're enjoying also was tied to the deadly SAO incident. So there is this moment where the sisters, and us as the reader, need to reconcile the notion that Akihiko Kayaba could be responsible for villainous, criminal behavior, could also be responsible for technology that gives suffering individuals a chance to be free, to live, and to make more memories.

In so doing, we also get to start to bring up the relationships between Yuuki and Aiko, and later Merida, in Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly. The three girls  living with a terminal illnesses meet in Serene Garden, bonding over bug-catching, crepes, and VR games. It's heartening to see this immediate connection. It's like the reasons they are able to be in this VR world take a backseat. They can instead form a real and meaningful bond together. They get to make plans to spend time together, something they probably would never be able to do otherwise.

It means we also get to see the Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga's "Sisters' Prayer" storyline touch on a different issue. Are these VR games valuable? Is it something that should be used for these hospice patients? Are they missing out on final, real-world experiences and "wasting time" here? I appreciate how it is tackled, even briefly.

Given the nature of the Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga series, what we see of Yuuki, Aiko, and Merida here is more of a teaser. It's a first part of a larger piece that will be explored more later. But what is here is very valuable. In a short period of time, it establishes important relationships and gets the reader thinking about interesting questions regarding the creator of certain VR technologies and the usage of them.

Volume 2 of the Sword Art Online: Kiss and Fly manga is available now from Yen Press, and volume 3 will debut on January 21, 2025. It also handled the light novels and outside Japan. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll.
