PCGamesN Monday, January 6, 2025 11:21 AM It's hard to pick the best level in Battlefield 3's peerless campaign. I like the first full mission, with the gunfight in the parking lot and the sniper, but the two levels where you play as the Spetznaz, first in Paris, then in the (extremely destructible) coastal villa are spectacular. The huge battle to capture the bank is another high point, but in terms of sheer tension, atmosphere, and fear factor, I think the prize belongs to the setpiece dogfight mission Going Hunting. I could write an entire article about why this is so good, but it turns out the level's playable character, Hawkins, originally had a bigger role in Battlefield 3. In fact, the campaign's lead designer now shares details on two whole missions that were cut before launch. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Battlefield 3 system requirements |
PCGamesN Monday, January 6, 2025 11:16 AM It's time for CES 2025, which means a gluttony of hardware news is on its way. Before the trade show has officially kicked off, however, we've already got our first look at a new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card from third-party manufacturer Inno3D. This Inno3D card is the first real look at what an RTX 5090 is going to physically look like, with this new Nvidia flagship strongly expected to fully dominate as the best graphics card you can buy once it launches. However, while this leak gives us a glimpse at Inno3D's vision for the new card, Nvidia-manufactured 5090's will likely look quite different, with those graphics cards expected to launch with Nvidia's own branding and design. PCGamesN Monday, January 6, 2025 11:16 AM When is the Dying Light The Beast release date? The newest standalone Dying Light game, now called Dying Light The Beast, originally started out as DL2 DLC. However, once original protagonist Kyle Crane was brought back and the concept and scale of the expansion grew, Dying Light The Beast became, well, a beast of its own. Though we enjoyed Dying Light 2, the futuristic metropolis setting and lack of survival elements fought off the creepy horror we love about the series. We spoke to the devs about this and more ahead of the TGAs and, thankfully, Techland tells us they've taken player feedback seriously. Dying Light The Beast brings back the horror of Dying Light with terrifying new environments, ties the story in with both DL2 and the first game, and gives players an introduction to the future of the series. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 10:53 AM The last time I wrote about Sonic fangame, I innocently and absent-mindedly described it as "SNES-style". This led to a social media dog-pile of an intensity typically reserved for major international banks accidentally tweeting rule34, a howl of derision that washed over me again and again while I rolled around on the floor beneath my desk, caterwauling at Graham to please please delete the whole internet, I want to start all over again. Let's see if we fare better this time round: Sonic Galactic is an absurdly accomplished Sonic fangame from Starteam that, broadly, imagines how the Mega Drive and Genesis platformers might have looked and felt had they been made for the Sega Saturn. There's a new demo, if you fancy trying it for yourself. Please find it here on Itch.io. Perhaps if I'd put the download link higher up the page in the other article, people would have got distracted and refrained from dunking on me so awfully. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 10:11 AM An upcoming life sim which claims to be a competitor to Grand Theft Auto VI is continuing to amass followers and wishlists on Steam, despite the game being unmasked as a vehicle for a dodgy cryptocurrency. Paradise is marketed as a third-person game set in a sunny modern city, where you can speak to any NPC via microphone on the street and get stilted responses powered by artificial intelligence. You will supposedly drive sports cars, shoot guns at people, and accrue in-game cash. But its more outlandish claims attracted immediate scrutiny from video creators who found countless inconsistencies in the marketing material. The game has since been removed from the Epic Games Store, presumably for breaking many of the store's rules. But it's still on Steam, and somehow clambering steadily up the wishlist ladder in defiance of its many red flags. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 8:25 AM Original Fallout designer Tim Cain, also known for co-directing The Outer Worlds at Obsidian, has published a video responding to a player's question about why violence is the "default" path in so many big budget RPGs. That's specifically RPGs with "AAA" budgets, whatever AAA means these days. Cain is, of course, well aware that there are many RPGs from smaller teams that "evolve past the paradigm of violence being the default way in which the player interacts with the world", and that there are plenty of puzzle games, adventure games and the like in which there is no violence at all. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 8:05 AM The baggiest thing about PS1-harkening soulslike Tyrant's Realm is the ratty pair of prisoner pants you start out with. Everything else is pleasingly austere. It is, like Dark Souls, a game about equipment and stamina management, but it finds most success as a soulslike in the sensation that you are alone somewhere bad, not able to do very much except hit horrible things in the space between them trying to hit you. It also offers notable moments of lonely, loud footsteps rebounding off cold stone tiles in the seconds after felling some giant man-bastard - one of the subgenre's greatest un-joys. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 5:56 AM Last June, Valve's trading card game Artifact Classic peaked at 78 players. November was a little rosier for the abandoned multiplayer game, with a monthly peak of 1,028. Then, on New Year's Day, that number jumped to 11,900 players on Steam - its second highest concurrent besides launch. Soon after, they vanished. Who were these mysterious shufflers, flocking to the deserted, echoing halls of Valve's disastrous flop like your mate who uses the word 'liminal' too much to a dead shopping center? Forbes, who first reported on the phenomena, don't know. No one knows. Somebody might actually know but writing 'no one knows' makes it more dramatic. Let's dig in. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 6, 2025 5:11 AM As New Year's Day dawns, the bells ring out from the steeples of old London town. The peals of celebration travel outward through our atmosphere, exiting the realm of Earthly sound and resonating with interstellar plasma and detritus to form a delicate ripple of comet flakes and stray photons, expanding far beyond our solar system. Where the ripple encounters larger masses, such as planets, suns and... other things, it rebounds, riding the weft of stardust back down to Earth. As it returns home, the signal is modified. Tinkered with. It acquires unsettling harmonics and a guttural undertow. By the time it re-enters our atmosphere, it has condensed to three words, which descend and shrink and spiral into your ear like an octopus entering a crevice: FEED THE MAW. |

We now know Yumemizuki Mizuki will be the new Genshin Impact Anemo character who will debut in 5.4. She's from the Inazuma region and is a yumekui-baku youkai that works at the region's Aisa Bathhouse.
HoYoVerse shared two posts about the new Anemo character on the Genshin Impact social media account. One focused on her background and lore, while the other confirmed her relationship with Yae Miko, her element, and details about her Constellation. That is known as Tapirus Somniator, and her full job title is Clinical Psychologist and Major Shareholder of Aisa Bathhouse. While she is a psychologist though, she also dresses a bit like a maid or attendant for the bathhouse. The official art shows her also carrying a tray with a drink.
The fact that she is a yumekui-baku youkai comes in handy for her profession. The lore establishes that they are able to read minds and eat nightmares. She's one of many that work at Aisa Bathhouse, and the backstory suggests the nightmare-eating is what helps clients who visit as patients.
Here's the full background on Yumemizuki Mizuki:
And here's Yae Miko's comment on the heroine:
This is the second new Anemo character to show up in Genshin Impact recently. Lan Yan is the other. She's a four-star unit who will join the pool of available characters upon her debut on January 21, 2025.
Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and Yumemizuki Mizuki will debut in 5.4.

Square Enix revealed the FFVII Rebirth PC specs, and there are minimum, recommended, and ultra requirements to possibly meet. As usual, folks can play on minimum and get by, and Ultra is entirely optional for those capable of meeting those goals. The company also didn't issue a progress report on its Steam Deck compatibility yet.
First, here are the minimum PC requirements for FFVII Rebirth, with those specs making it playable at 30 FPS, 1080p resolution, and low graphics quality. The notes for it also suggest you should have 12 GB GPU memory if you have a 4K monitor.
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i3-8100
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600, Intel Arc A580, or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
Memory: 16 GB
Storage: 155 GB SSD
Here are the recommended specs for the JRPG. These allow you to play it at "medium" quality, which also supports 60 FPS and 1080p resolution.
OS: Windows 11 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, Intel Core i7-8700, or Intel Core i5-10400
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070
Memory: 16 GB
Storage: 155 GB SSD
Finally, here are the ultra level of PC requirements if someone wants FFVII Rebirth to look and run at its best. This enables 60 FPS and 2160p support, as well as allows someone to choose high graphics quality.
OS: Windows 11 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or Intel Core i&-10700
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080

Square Enix also shared an infographic with all of the specifications alongside each other for easy comparisons.

Square Enix announced that it is once again possible to purchase a digital copy of its strategy game Triangle Strategy on the Nintendo Switch eShop. It first appeared there in March 2022, but it ended up being "temporarily unavailable" at the start of December 2024. Now that 2025's begun, the company announced its return. The status of physical copies at retail remains unchanged.
In the case of Triangle Strategy on the Switch, physical copies were always available and those who grabbed a digital version of the game before its temporary removal could still redownload it. No explanation was offered for the removal initially. Now that it is back on the storefront, Square Enix is listed as the publisher. Initially, Nintendo acted as the publisher for the game upon its debut.
The Switch eShop removal happened right after the debut of the Triangle Strategy Meta Quest VR version. That launched in October 2024. A Windows PC version is also available. That debuted in October 2022, just after the Switch release.
While the game is about two years old now, there haven't been any price drops. It is still $59.99 for a digital copy of Triangle Strategy on the eShop. That's how much it is on Steam as well. The Meta Quest version is $29.99.
Triangle Strategy is available for the Nintendo Switch both physically and digitally on the eShop, PC, and Meta Quest headsets.

Bandai Spirits' hobby division revealed Gundam Assemble, a new tabletop miniatures game that will also feature buildable Gunpla model kits. The company first revealed the title at the Bandai Card Games Fest 24-25 World Tour in Orlando, Florida. It also confirmed that the new physical game will be available worldwide.
The new game will feature Mobile Suits and warships from various titles throughout the Gundam franchise. Each unit will have unique abilities, and the player will be able to construct both scenarios based on the original works and crossover events.
In addition, Bandai Namco will hold an in-house crossover with the upcoming TCG Gundam Card Game. The group will include the tabletop game's unit kits based on the Token Cards for each of the four Starter Decks, which will be released worldwide in July 2025.
The Gunplas used for this new tabletop game will have some differences from the regular model kits. While the most common 1/144 scale Gunpla kits of an RX-78-2 Gundam would stand at around 12.5 cm (~5 inches) upon completion, the paintable kits for Gundam Assemble will only result in 5 cm (~2 inches) tall units. In addition, the smaller kits will also be mostly static with almost no movable parts.
Here is the official teaser video for Gundam Assemble, available to watch via YouTube:
The new tabletop miniatures game Gundam Assemble will be available physically worldwide.

PlatinumGames has opened a new webpage on its official site to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Bayonetta. The new page is available in both Japanese and English.
Even though Sega first released Bayonetta for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in Japan in late October 2009, PlatinumGames opted to start celebrating the game's 15th anniversary in January 2025 to coincide with its global releases. Sega subsequently released Bayonetta on the same platforms in North America on January 5, 2010, in Australia on January 7, 2010, and in Europe on January 8, 2010.
The company that developed the Bayonetta video game series will use the new webpage to share new smartphone wallpapers with an optional calendar every month. The January 2025 wallpaper features Bayonetta and Jeanne with Japanese attires to symbolize the New Year festival season.
On the same webpage, PlatinumGames also shared the new Bayonetta music box, which Wayo Records will release in Q1 2025 for €220.00. The latter will design the music box after Bayonetta's Super Mirror, and it will play Masami Ueda's "Theme of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny" for 30 seconds with 10 loops.
The first Bayonetta is available on not only the PS3, Xbox 360, and Switch, but also PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, and PC worldwide.
