Resident Evil Village Review

A little less than a year after being announced, Capcom's Resident Evil Village is finally here. Can Village stand toe-to-toe with the recent Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes? Check out our review and find out.

Resident Evil Village Review

Resident Evil Village starts with a recap of Resident Evil 7, one designed to make sure you know what's going on in Village. The title once again stars Ethan Winters, who happily lives with his wife Mia and their new daughter Rose. Shortly into the game, Chris Redfield and his team bust into Ethan's house to capture him and his daughter. Chris kills Mia and takes Rose without explaining why. When you wake up, you find yourself in a strange forest next to a couple of dead guys, and your daughter is missing. You travel through the woods until you enter the village, and that's where the real nightmare begins.

Resident Evil 8 honest game review

After exploring the village for a bit, you are introduced to the main villains of the game. They have Rose, and want to play with you for a bit. This, of course, comes back to bite them. You escape the enemies and then begin the search for Rose. Your first adventure is in Castle Dimitrescu, where a tall lady lives with her daughters. You have to explore the castle, get the keys, and escape the crazy vampire ladies that live inside. The campaign took around 10 hours to complete, though you can squeeze out a few more with additional exploration.

Resident Evil Village has a first-person combat system, as opposed to the third-person view of the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes. This title is is not a twitch shooter, however; your aiming is slow and all of your ammo counts. The enemies will sway, charge, duck, run, and do anything else they can do to overwhelm you. Still, once you get used to it, the game becomes pretty easy on the default difficulty. You start to learn their patterns and can land headshots with ease. When it becomes that easy, the game becomes less tense and loses some of its scare factor. If you are a veteran of Resident Evil, you might want to bump the difficulty up a notch.

Village is a bit different when it comes to its horror. You get different vibes from different areas and different bosses. Lady Dimitrescu plays the role Mr. X had in the Resident Evil 2 remake. You can hear her hunting you through hallways and stairwells. A later area strips you of your weapons and light, leaving you to stumble through an old house while something chases you. There is also a water boss, which had me on edge because it was a one-hit kill in that area. My point is, you are likely to find something in the amalgamation of horror genres Village offers.

Resident Evil Village honest review

One thing that Resident Evil is pretty well known for is its puzzles. Resident Evil Village has some great puzzles that require you to think on your feet. They aren't afraid to let you miss some things if you ignore a puzzle. While you have traditional puzzles like figuring out music notes or replacing fuses, Village also has a bunch of environmental puzzles. I like them here because they make you think. Early on, there is an easy torch puzzle, but the second one makes you try new things to complete it and get your reward. The puzzles are satisfying and rewarding, which is an essential part of the series.

Another rewarding part of the game is the exploration. Treasure makes a return to the series, allowing you to trade it to a new merchant for ammo, weapons, upgrades, and even meals. He goes by The Duke, and he somehow is allowed to trade here without being attacked. Instead of being a background merchant, he becomes a bit of a primary character, offering Ethan advice and help from time to time. After a few hours of play, he will offer to cook meals for the two of you. These meals will increase your stats permanently, giving you more HP and increasing your movement speed.

If there is one thing that really irks me about the game, it is how it handles progression. You are always moving forward at a steady clip, which is nice. However, after you beat a big area, such as Dimitrescu Castle, it becomes locked off. That means if you missed any ammo, supplies, treasure, or whatever, it's gone for good. I'd be okay with it if it were a minor area, but huge chunks of the map eventually become inaccessible. I know why it's done; it's to prevent players from thinking they are missing an essential item in the old area. Still, it proves to be fairly annoying nonetheless.

Resident Evil 8 honest review

Resident Evil Village also brings back the fan-favorite Mercenaries mode. In it, players are given a timer to clear out a certain amount of enemies before you can move on to the next level. You collect resources to upgrade in between levels and can find buffs during the fights. These buffs can give you more damage, heal you per shot, and make you do more knife damage. There aren't many levels, but hopefully we can get some more as free DLC. It isn't the Mercenaries of the past, but it is a step in the right direction. I think we'll see the game mode come back fully in the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake.

I played the PlayStation 5 version of the game and didn't run into any bugs or crashes. There were a couple of pathing issues with the enemies, but nothing major. The game looks gorgeous as well; some fantastic lighting work on display. Just be warned that there are flying enemies, which are always incredibly annoying in first-person shooters.

Resident Evil Village shines brightly as one of this year's early Game of the Year contenders. Whether you're a fan of the series or a survival horror fan in general, be sure to pick it up.

This Resident Evil Village review was done on the PlayStation 5. A digital code was provided by the publisher.

The Dublin's Reach quest requires Dublin Renown level 2. This guide on How To Increase Dublin's Renown In AC Valhalla Wrath of the Druids explains how you can increase your Renown Rank in the Wrath of the Druids DLC for Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Wrath of the Druids focuses on a story between Barid and Eivor as they attempt to create a thriving trade hub in and around Dublin. While some of it is related to the main quest, much of it is optional content as you run around exploring, finding new trading outposts, building them, and upgrading them to earn more resources. Herein lies the best method of increasing Dublin's Renown Rank to level 2 and beyond.

Scattered around the map are Trade Posts. If you're struggling to find them all, check out our map of all Trade Post locations. Each Trade Posts function much in the same. When you first arrive you need to kill all of the enemies and then find a clue to the location of the Deed. Hunt down the deed, return to the Trade Post, and then build it. You can then upgrade each Trade Post with various facilities.

Each Trade post you own creates resources over a fixed period of time. These resources generate automatically and can be gathered from a chest in Dublin. After a while, you'll get a decent stock, so make sure to check the chest before it's full so you don't waste resources.

After you have a decent collection of resources you need to speak with Azar in Dublin. Each time you take a Trade Post, Trade Contracts in the Overseas Trading screen are updated, providing you with more trading options. Focus on all of the ones with the icon that gives Dublin Renown to increase your rank. This will require a lot of Trade Post Supplies, so get to farming.

Trade Posts are important to both the story and the side content in the Wrath of the Druids DLC for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. There are a number of Trade Posts scattered around the map and each serves a different purpose – although they are all unified under the banner of the new trading system. Trading is also the only way to get a number of the new armor sets, so it's worth investing if you want to customize your characters abilities and builds further.

Each of the Trade Posts are highlighted by our icon in the map above. They all function in a similar way. When you first reach the Trade Post for the first time, it will be filled with enemies. You need to defeat all of the enemies and then search the area for a clue. The clue will give you the general location of the Deed for that particular Trade Post. Track down the Deed and then return to start building the Trade Post.

You can then invest Trade Post Supplies to further expand the Trade Post to provide more materials. There is not enough Trade Post Supplies in the enemy camps alone so you will need to make sure you can find more Trade Post Supplies as you explore through the game.

The Drumlish Trade Post needs a special deed to unlock. This Trade: Dyed In The Wool Drumlish Trade Post Deed Location Guide For AC Valhalla will tell you how to track down the deed as the game just asks you to investigate the Trade Post, which doesn't bring up any clues or other information.

Trade Posts play an important role in the Wrath of the Druid DLC, so it makes sense that you want to find all of the Trade Posts. Trade Posts open up new trade options that can unlock brand new armor sets and provide other rewards and goodies. There are also special quests that offer double the rewards if you have certain buildings constructed at specific Trade Posts. The Drumlish Trade Post is one such location, so you'll want to find the Deed so you can upgrade the Trading Post as soon as possible.

There may be a clue or another tip in the Trade Post itself but I never found one. To find the deed you need to travel South to Knockfree. There's a tower here with a golden chest near the top. You have to shoot through a grate to destroy an explosive jar, this in turn destroys the wall, revealing the path to the chest.

Right next to the chest is a skeleton. Loot the skeleton to claim the deed. You can now return to Drumlish and build the Trade Post.

AC Valhalla Wrath of the Druids Execute, Brutal Death, Or Cruelty Choice

AC Valhalla Wrath of the Druids Execute, Brutal Death, Or Cruelty Choice
Near the beginning of the Wrath of the Druids DLC you will choose Thorstein's fate. This AC Valhalla Wrath of the Druids Execute, Brutal Death, Or Cruelty Choice guide details each of the three choices you can make, outlining the outcomes so you can choose what path you wish to follow.

After you capture Thorstein from his encampment, you're tasked with taking him back to Barid. When you return to the center of Dublin, Barid asks for your advice on how to deal with the situation. You can choose a dignified execution, a brutal death, or a display of cruelty.

AC Valhalla Wrath of the Druids Execute, Brutal Death, Or Cruelty Choice

If you choose A Dignified Execution
Sichfrith agrees with this but Barid says it's not worth the bother. He decides to confiscate Thorstein's land and silver, and banishes him from Dublin. Afterwards his son and Eivor question his choice and Barid explains it was to win favor with the king.

If you choose A Brutal Death
Eivor suggests a brutal death is the best solution to dealing with Thorstein. Barid's son is all for this idea, but Barid is not. Barid disagrees and decides to exile Thorstein, banishing him from Dublin and confiscating all his wealth.

If you choose A Display of Cruelty
Barid agrees and decides the fitting punishment is exile, sending Thorstein away and confiscating his goods.

Ultimately, the decision doesn't seem to have much impact on the story.

The Wages of War quests needs you to kill The Seed. This guide on How To Find And Kill The Seed In Assassin's Creed Valhalla Wrath Of Druids will walk you through the process of finding all of the clues relating to The Seed, and then tracking him down so you can kill your target.

Most of them are optional however, the Seed and one other are both integral parts of the story. If you need to find the earlier clues be sure to check out our Children of Danu guide.

How To Find And Kill The Seed In Assassin's Creed Valhalla Wrath Of Druids

Find And Kill The Seed In Assassin's Creed Valhalla Wrath Of Druids
If you are currently hunting the Children of Danu, there is a misleading clue for The Seed. It reads, when in Ireland, The Seed will be found in Dunseverick Fortress. However, that is not possible until a certain point of the story. Unlike the other members of the Children of Danu, The Seed cannot be killed until a certain part of the story has been reached. I won't spoil the details but you will know when the time comes as you'll be tasked with killing The Seed.

When you reach that stage head to the location shown above, at Movilla Abbey in East Ulster. In the main building where the altar and long benches are, search one of the benches for the clue to The Seed. Once you have the last clue, the first clue makes sense.
