By my own rough count, the Halo series has seen some 150 or so multiplayer maps over the course of its two decades. Many of these are good. Some are great. And of course, some are terrible.      Call of Duty Vanguard and Warzone Season 1 – everything we know

There's a big update coming to CoD's battle royale game; Warzone integrates with this year's Call of Duty, Vanguard, later this year. Call of Duty Cold War integrated with Warzone not long after Cold War's release, and Season 1 began for both games simultaneously in December 2020.

It looks like this year will be fairly similar, with the Call of Duty Vanguard release date scheduled for November. We've already had a chance to play the Vanguard open beta and have put together all the Call of Duty Vanguard weapons we've seen in the beta so far - all of which can have up to ten attachments - so you better get planning your loadout.

Warzone is currently on Season 6, with both Modern Warfare and Cold War weapons available to players. The Warzone map changed significantly in Season 3, receiving an '80s makeover complete with action film icons John McClane and Rambo. Now there are even more changes coming to Warzone in November with the integration of Vanguard, including a new map, weapons, and anti-cheat system.

When does the new Warzone map come out?

Want to know more about the new Warzone map? Sledgehammer Games' WWII themed release will integrate with Warzone in December 2021, introducing new weapons, vehicles, and a brand new WWII map set to replace '80s Verdansk. The new map is called Caldera, and it's going to launch with Vanguard and Warzone Season 1.

Black Ops Cold War fully integrated with the battle royale game at the beginning of Season 3 with the release of '80s Verdansk, five months after its November launch. There were a number of issues with the Cold War integration that took a while to fix: popular weapons were completely unbalanced for months, attachments didn't function like they were supposed to, and weapon balancing on Modern Warfare weapons completely stopped.

A recent Call of Duty blog post broke down everything coming to Warzone less than a month after Vanguard launches. There are plenty of in-game events on the run up to Warzone Pacific, so stay tuned for more information. Here's everything we know about the new Warzone map so far.

One of Epic's next free games is a classic isometric horror game

It's Thursday, and you know what that means – another round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store. This week, you can grab the the Antstream Arcade – Epic Welcome pack and The Hunter: Call of the Wild. As ever, Epic has revealed next week's freebies, too, and one of them is classic isometric horror game we're sure you'll recognise.

You'll be able to grab Dead by Daylight and While True: learn() from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page on Thursday, December 2 at 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST. It'll be there for one full week, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie - or freebies, if you're lucky. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for.

Here's the Dead By Daylight blurb, to give you a taste: "Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer (four vs one) horror game where one player takes on the role of the savage killer, and the other four players play as survivors, trying to escape the killer and avoid being caught and killed."

Distant Worlds 2 devs want to

Distant Worlds 2 is one space strategy game that's been on our radar ever since it was announced earlier this year. Currently scheduled for release early next year, it presents players with a living galaxy, teeming with private enterprise, pirates, and powerful space monsters beneath the usual humdrum of the 'big' empires.

Distant Worlds' place within the space 4X genre is distinct - if not wholly unique - and the developer Code Force's main aim was less to reinvent it for new audiences, but rather to bring the established premise into the modern age with new, 64-bit tech.

"With Distant Worlds 1 we had a lot of great ideas," game director Erik Rutins tells us, "but we were a generation behind in terms of the game engine." One of the team's primary goals was, as Rutins puts it, to "correct that gap" and ensure Distant Worlds 2 is a game that existing fans could recognise and enjoy, while also being confident that it was a modern game. "It was actually a huge goal and a huge amount of work for us, given the size the team," he observes.

Best Black Friday gaming headset deals

     Stellaris devs outline

Space strategy game Stellaris just received a new expansion pack that introduces aquatic species, along with a whole host of other neat add-ons for the five-year-old game. Today, the devs have taken a moment through their weekly dev diary update to explain what the plan is going forward.

First and foremost, there's the 3.3 patch due around February, which tracks with what the devs have said previously about the near-term plan. One thing the team has confirmed it will be working on is changes to how Unity (a resource for unlocking powerful perks) works, with the goal being having everything ready for the next patch.

The dev diary also notes that, since the changes are a bit "spicy", the team is considering running a beta ahead of the 3.3 patch to collect community feedback. The devs will release more details on the Unity rework and potential beta run towards the end of the year. There are some other big things in the pipeline as well - more AI improvements will be coming, for example, and the team also wants to create a new system called 'Situations'. This is going to be similar to the Disasters system from historical grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV.

Nvidia RTX 4000 GPUs – everything we know about Lovelace

It may be hard to believe, but it's been just over a year since the launch of Nvidia's RTX 3000 GPUs, but the best graphics cards wait for no one, and it looks like RTX 4000 products will be with us sooner rather than later. We've put together all the latest rumours you need to get acquainted with 'Lovelace', including its release date, price, specs, and benchmarks.

As much as the raw performance of team green's RTX GPUs make them attractive to anyone looking to upgrade their gaming PC, it's features like Nvidia Reflex and Nvidia DLSS that elevate the graphics cards above its competition. RTX 4000 cards will likely come armed with the same technologies, if not even more.

However, Nvidia isn't content with simply cornering the desktop GPU market and has its sights set on the cloud too. The company's Nvidia Geforce Now service currently provides up to RTX 3080 levels of performance to all manner of devices, such as low-spec PCs and smartphones (and not-so-smart-phones), via cloud streaming. Team green will undoubtedly update Geforce Now with RTX 4000 graphics cards at some point after their release to the public.

Call of Duty Warzone – Secrets of the Pacific locations

Want to know more about the Secrets of the Pacific event in Call of Duty Vanguard and Warzone? The latest Warzone event gives players a glimpse of Caldera, the new Warzone map set to replace Verdansk in December. There are separate challenges across Vanguard and Warzone, each containing in-game rewards and a picture of Caldera's points of interest.

Caldera was originally set to arrive on December 3, but the devs made the decision to delay the launch by one week. As a result, it's unclear whether the final Warzone event is going to take place on November 30 as planned. The only information we know about this event comes from the Call of Duty blog, claiming it's going to be a "spectacular and fitting end to your time in Verdansk".

The Secrets of the Pacific event went live on November 24, but the event has been temporarily removed from Vanguard due to game breaking bugs. As of the time of writing, this issue has yet to be resolved - keep an eye out on Sledgehammer Games' Twitter page for the latest updates. Here's everything you need to know about the Secrets of the Pacific event in Call of Duty Vanguard and Warzone.

Zotac has created the ultimate anti-RGB gaming PC range, and you could win it

More often than not, the best gaming PCs and their internal components are designed to put on a show. From RAM with RGB-clad heatsinks to colourful case fans and peripherals,  desk setups usually feature quite a lot of flare. Yet, it seems like Zotac gaming has been listening to the Rolling Stones recently, as the company has taken its latest product range and painted it blacker than black.

Dubbed Dark Matter, Zotac's new lineup features an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, RTX 3070, and a ZBOX Magnus One case that are collectively coated in the world's "blackest paint". According to the product's official page, the range's ultra-black matte has a light absorption rate of 99.4%. In other words, these expensive parts all but vanish with the lights out, with accent lights being the only way to ensure they still exist on this plane.

While gaming on something that looks like it came from the abyss sounds appealing, this gothic range could pair nicely with conventional RGB components. Arming the ZBOX Magnus case with a Dark Matter graphics card and flashy components might seem counter-intuitive, but it could make your other parts pop - like watching an expensive motherboard float through the void of space.

Minecraft 1.18 snapshot gets your cats off their butts and scaring phantoms again

With the Minecraft 1.18 release date coming up soon, the pre-release snapshots for the update are getting teenier and weenier. But still, the snapshots keep on coming each week with some useful updates and tweaks - and while this week's round doesn't contain anything major, there are a few bits and pieces worth noting - the most important of which are all about our (virtual) feline friends.

Mojang explains that one of the bug fixes for 11.18's pre-release 8 patch addresses "cats no longer scar[ing] phantoms away". As fans will know, phantoms are hostile mobs that haunt the night skies - and they're super scared of cats. That's because cats will hiss and spit at phantoms that attack player characters, which means the spooky spirits will try to steer pretty far clear - about 16 blocks, in fact - of them.

Phantoms started being afraid of cats as of a 1.14 update - 18w44a if you want to be fancy about it - and the latest snapshot means that your feline friends can continue to keep them at bay.

You can loot the panther statue from the Cayo Perico Heist for the next week in GTA Online. While Rockstar Games hasn't posted the details to the Newswire yet, the weekly update is already live, allowing players to see what's new for themselves.

It fetches a price of $1.73 million in-game bucks on the regular difficulty and $1.9 million in-game dollars on hard.

FFXIV modder turns Fat Cat plushie into a mount controller

While some Final Fantasy XIV mounts show off a particular feat you've accomplished, easier to obtain mounts can be just as popular due to how over the top they are. Take the Fat Cat mount, for example - it's fat, and it's a cat. That's excellent. So tremendous is this mount that Square Enix sells a chonking big plushie version of it on the store, which one fan has now decided to turn into a controller, bringing us full circle.

YouTuber Louis 'Super Louis 64' Hamilton explains that the way it all works is pretty simple - his Warrior of Light hops on their mount when he sits on the plushie and then hops off if Hamilton gets off his Fat Cat. If you want to get technical, Hamilton has woven some sensors into a blanket that triggers a macro in the game when he sits on the plushie or gets off of it.

"That's pretty much it!" he explains on Twitter. "The board is completely open to add joysticks, buttons, and what not if I want it to take it one step further for a Fat Cat battle controller, but we'll see!"

The best Genshin Impact Yanfei build

After the best Genshin Impact Yanfei build? This four-star Pyro Catalyst wielder arrived during the Genshin Impact 1.5 update as part of the Zhongli banner. Although she's squishy, paired with the right party and the best DPS build, you can maximise her Pyro damage and ensure she stays alive.

Yanfei is the top legal expert in Liyue Harbor, fully versed in every area of the law, also known as the "law that walks". She also shares a mysterious connection to another  Genshin Impact character, Eula. She's part illuminated beast, similar to Ganyu, and generates scarlet seals, which decrease her stamina consumption, when using normal attacks or her elemental skill and elemental burst. You can check out her full abilities below.

The scarlet seals can be used to increase her charged attack's area of effect and damage output, so although there's nothing particularly outstanding about Yanfei's stats, positioning her as DPS, alongside shield characters such as Diona and Zhongli, will help you get the most out of her. First, let's take a look at the best Genshin Impact Yanfei build.

Valheim update brings new armour and something that

There's something stirring in the swamps of Valheim. The team at developer Iron Gate has teased a new presence that's just made its way to the Viking game's murky marshes as part of its latest update - and there are some other bits and pieces joining whatever this "something" is. Some potential (minor) spoilers about what's new follow, folks.

"Something stirs in the swamps", the 0.205.5 patch notes tease - and that's just about all we know. The November dev blog goes a weeny bit further to explain the meaning of this addition, noting: "We have heard something strange is stirring in the swamps, and brave Vikings who dare to investigate will be rewarded with materials to craft something brand-new." Tucked away in the blog as a spoiler is a shot of an impressive - and pretty intimidating - new armour set that you can fashion, which we've included an image of below.

Elsewhere in the patch are various handy bug fixes, across gameplay, audio, and some other areas of the game. Monsters will now wake up if hit with ranged attacks, for example (as you'd expect of a slumbering beastie pelted with an arrow), and there are some music fixes in the mix, too.

Katharine and I went hands-on with Babylon's Fall last week, that online action RPG by PlatinumGames which falls in and out of memory as the years tick by. Still, when an invitation to the third phase of its ongoing closed beta test arrived, I couldn't help but get excited. These are the folks behind NieR: Automata and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, after all, and now they're making a live-service, co-op slasher. Sign. Me. Up.

As it stands, the closed beta only showed a very small, very early build of the game, but we've got some thoughts. Combat, exploration, and co-op were all on offer here, and there's a fair amount to unpack. Look beyond the early build jank and there's definitely potential.

Recently, I've moved out of the city and into a little village in the middle of nowhere. Look outside the window and I see trees, maybe a little house nestled atop a hill. I walk past sheep and hope they don't shuffle away from me this time, as it could mean we're finally mates. At night it gets really dark, darker than you think is possible. An owl screeches and it scares the bejeezus out of me.

Yeah, it's nice out here. But getting into the village by car is a challenge. The roads are wobbly and narrow, with little patience for noisy machines. This means I've had to stop and let other cars pass a lot. At first it was irritating, but now I've come to enjoy it. Getting a wave or a flash of the lights warms the heart and can turn a bad day into a good one. It strikes me that multiplayer games lack this fleeting comradery, which is a shame.

Amazon Studios are "nearing a deal" to develop a TV series based on Mass Effect, according to a recent Deadline report. Excellent stuff. I'm all for it! If Mass Effect were to be adapted into anything, I'd much rather it be a potentially long-running series rather than a film so it has enough time to establish its excellent sci-fi setting. However, we need to talk about what story Amazon could potentially take from the games. To me, it seems likely they'd follow the trilogy, which I reckon is the right move. But I don't think we need to see more of Shepard's side of things, you know? They should put Liara front-and-centre instead.
