Kotaku Wednesday, December 8, 2021 4:25 PM Despite its trappings as a jingoistic space opera, the Halo franchise often finds itself straddling the line between serious and humorous. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 4:46 PM The nominees are in, and it's nearly time to split your attention between the best games of 2021 and the brightest lights of the upcoming release slate - yes, it's once again the season of The Game Awards. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 3:24 PM The holiday season has arrived in irradiated Appalachia, and that means it's time for Fallout 76's Mothman Equinox event. Now through December 21, the post-nuclear MMORPG will host a new seasonal event every hour in Point Pleasant, where a group of robed oddballs are summoning the Wise Mothman. The Mothman Equinox event, as mentioned, is taking place in Point Pleasant, in the forest region. You'll start out by speaking with Interpreter Clarence, who's stationed on the roof of the Mothman Museum. By lighting ritual bonfires and fighting off rival mothman cultists (who worship a false and strange mothman rather than the one true Wise Mothman), you'll be able to earn the benevolent cryptid's favour - which, in turn, is a chance at some sweet loot. Cultist high priests are wandering all over Appalachia, though, and you can hunt them down to earn new Mothman Cult gear. The patch notes, however, warn that you'll want to keep an eye out for the cult's shadow creatures. Sounds like you'll want to bring along some extra ammo and Rad-Away. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 3:23 PM Want to know where to find the Halo Infinite skulls? As Halo veterans know, skulls have always been a real pain to find in every campaign in the series. However, when you find these skulls, you can use them in the campaign menu to add modifiers, such as doubling the explosion radius. While you can find a few skulls on the map in the open-world game, there are also specific missions with skulls hidden throughout the campaign. Unfortunately, these skulls are easy to miss, and there's no way to replay missions without starting from the beginning. Since the Halo Infinite campaign length is reasonably long, you should probably know where to find them first time around. So here are the Halo Infinite skulls locations, modifiers, and key details you need to know before setting off from the nearest fast travel location. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 1:03 PM It may surprise you to learn that you can find Halo Infinite multiplayer skins and other cosmetic items in the single-player campaign. You can find them in the open world by capturing FOBs, which ping the skin location on the world map. Once highlighted on your map, it's just a case of finding the Mjolnir Armory cases and opening them up to get the item. However, not every one of these caches contains armour coating. They can also have weapon skins, vehicle skins, emblems, nameplates, charms, and stances. Once you've opened a cache, you can equip these items to your character in multiplayer mode. To learn more about how to do this, check out our Halo Infinite character customisation guide. You could just go and open every one of the Mjolnir Armory caches. However, we've separated all items into their relevant categories should you wish to prioritise the Halo Infinite multiplayer skins or any of the other unlockable items. In addition, some of the caches are hard to find, so here's a description of their location. RELATED LINKS: Halo Infinite release date, Halo Infinite system requirements, Halo Infinite ranks |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 1:02 PM Want to know about every boss in Halo Infinite? Zeta Halo is full of powerful enemies who desperately want to take down Master Chief - fortunately, there are plenty of weapons and explosive tanks to stop any foe in their tracks. If you thought the grunt enemies in Halo Infinite were tough, these destructive bosses should give you a run for your money. Halo Infinite's campaign forces you to fight against a set number of bosses, however, there are high value targets spread across the map which you can seek out at any time. These mini-boss targets are side missions and don't progress the story, but you can unlock unique weapon variants to spawn at any of your bases. Unsurprisingly, this guide contains major spoilers for Halo Infinite. If you're using this guide to work out how long you have left in the game, you may want to read our how long is Halo Infinite guide which breaks down the length of the campaign. Here's every Halo Infinite boss and what you need to defeat them. RELATED LINKS: Halo Infinite release date, Halo Infinite system requirements, Halo Infinite ranks |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 1:00 PM Searching for Spartan Cores in Halo Infinite? Master Chief's foray into the open world of Zeta Halo introduces RPG mechanics to the series. For the first time in a Halo game, players can upgrade Master Chief's Spartan armour using the Spartan Cores spread across the map. There are upgradeable abilities acquired during the early hours of the campaign - check out our latest guide to find out how long the Halo Infinite campaign is. You might find Spartan Cores on your travels, but the most reliable way to collect them is to capture forward operating bases, also known as FOBs. The map reveals every hidden item in the surrounding area once you take over an enemy outpost. Remember, you don't need to capture an FOB to claim Spartan Cores - skip out the hard part by going directly to the cores. Halo Infinite has plenty of collectibles, including unlockable multiplayer skins, skulls, and audio logs. Don't worry if you are unsure about what suit upgrades to pick, we'll break down the best abilities and explain what makes them must-haves. Here are the Spartan Core locations in Halo Infinite. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:52 PM Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a massive game, whether you're measuring it by the scope of the world, the hours of content, or the install size. That last one is an unequivocal negative, but the game's next title update will shrink the game's footprint on your hard drive a good bit. You'll just have to download an absolutely massive patch to make it happen. Title update 1.4.1 for Assassin's Creed Valhalla features a data restructuring - basically, the devs are repackaging the game files to be more efficient after all the updates over the past year. That means you'll have a smaller install size, plus improved performance across the board, with "faster loading screen times, improved world data streaming, and overall runtime performance." But it also means that you have to essentially redownload the entire game with this update. On PC, that's a 78GB download (console patch sizes range from 40GB to 71GB, as you can see in the update notes), which will ultimately save you 34GB off the previous install size (13GB to 44GB on console). Expansions won't be affected by this. RELATED LINKS: Assassin's Creed Valhalla review, How long is Assassin's Creed Valhalla?, Buy Assassin's Creed Valhalla |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:27 PM The hugely popular military MMO, World of Tanks, is now offering new players a bumper sign-up bonus if they sign up before the end of this month. In addition to a beefy tank to start you off strong, and 600 gold to spend in game as you wish, this offer also gives players unlimited access to a premium account for seven days - all for the grand price of absolutely nothing. With a worldwide userbase of over 160 million players, you'll pretty much always have an opponent ready and waiting whenever you want to play. Just sign up to one of the best tank games using this link and you'll gain access to all the goodies mentioned above. Starting a new MMO can be daunting (especially one that's been around as long as WoT), but that's part of what makes this deal so great: the M22 Locust is a tier 3 premium tank which would normally cost 900 gold. By signing up now and claiming your bonus, you'll gain some early leverage against the more seasoned players who have been playing for years. If you're playing from a CIS country, you'll instead receive the T-127, another equally cool tier 3 premium tank. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:04 PM Battlefield 2042 is getting one last major update before the holidays, with a broad array of fixes and balance changes to improve the game. Update 3.1 features improvements to hit registration, plus balance changes for recoil and bullet dispersion, and a broad nerf to the Ranger bot. (I guess he's been a bad boy). There will be "improvements to bullets hit registration consistency", as the update notes explain, though we'll have to wait until the update goes live to see how those work in practice. The devs also note that "Ranger's effective combat range and overall health has been decreased", so expect the assault robot to be a bit less effective from here. The big balance changes are for recoil and balance spread - in short, weapons should be a bit more accurate across the board from here. Accuracy will degrade more quickly when using burst fire, but it "now takes slightly longer for weapons to become overly inaccurate in sustained fire". The devs say that "over aggressive recoil jumps" have been pulled back for the AK24, LCMG, PKP-BP, SFAR-M GL, and PP-29, too. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:31 AM When God of War arrives on PC next month, it'll boast a couple enhancements over its original PlayStation version that should please PC players - although as with Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn, we won't be seeing more transformative additions, such as ray-tracing, in this port. However, any new features at all are the perfect excuse to cut a new trailer, and so today we get to gawp once again at Santa Monica's mythological action-adventure game. The trailer is captured in 4K at 60 fps, which gives us a nice look at the higher-resolution shadow maps featured in the PC port of God of War. The trailer points out that this version will also support Nvidia's DLSS and Reflext technologies at launch, which will be welcome news for anyone with a mid-spec machine. As we've reported, God of War's PC version also supports AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, so you'll be able to scale the base resolution to fit your performance needs no matter which gaming GPU you've got installed in your PC. The only other new feature specifically called out in the trailer is the improved screen space reflections, which will definitely look nice but likely fall short of the transformative visual punch provided by true ray-traced lighting and shadows. |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:16 AM Want to know more about the new Warzone map? Sledgehammer Games' WWII themed release will integrate with Warzone in December 2021, introducing new weapons, vehicles, and a brand new WWII map set to replace '80s Verdansk. The new map is called Caldera, and it's going to launch with Vanguard and Warzone Season 1. Black Ops Cold War fully integrated with the battle royale game at the beginning of Season 3 with the release of '80s Verdansk, five months after its November launch. There were a number of issues with the Cold War integration that took a while to fix: popular weapons were completely unbalanced for months, attachments didn't function like they were supposed to, and weapon balancing on Modern Warfare weapons completely stopped. A recent Call of Duty blog post broke down everything coming to Warzone less than a month after Vanguard launches. There are plenty of in-game events on the run up to Warzone Pacific, so stay tuned for more information. Here's everything we know about the new Warzone map so far. |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:12 AM Want to know everything that's coming in the Minecraft 1.18 update? The Caves and Cliffs update has been split into two halves: the first part has already been released with the Minecraft 1.17 update. This means we have plenty of new Minecraft mobs to get acquainted with such as goats, glow squid, and axolotls, as well as the brand new amethyst blocks. However, the 1.18 update is where all the world-changing features will arrive. These include all new biomes, a fearsome new enemy mob in the form of the Minecraft Warden, and new blocks that enable wireless Redstone for the first time in Minecraft. It's all very exciting stuff and if you can't wait until the official release date to experience it for yourself, you should probably check out the Minecraft snapshot betas. So without further ado, this is a roundup of everything that we currently know about the Minecraft 1.18 update, otherwise known as part 2 of the Caves & Cliffs update. We'll also include all of the announcements that Mojang has made regarding any confirmed features coming after the 1.18 update. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:37 AM God of War finally comes to gaming PCs on January 14, 2022, just short of four years after its release on PS4, and now developer Sony Santa Monica has revealed what your rig needs to pack in order to play it. It seems like the wait might even be worth it, too, with the God of War system requirements granting you access to plenty of graphics settings and exclusive features. We've known since its announcement that the Nordic epic will feature Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling technology so you can boost fps, which truly makes use of God of War's uncapped frame rate. Nvidia Reflex is also no surprise, and should make the game more responsive when you're stringing combos together. DLSS uses Tensor Cores, so you won't be able to enjoy it if you're running anything less than an RTX graphics card, but Reflex is available to anyone using a GeForce 900 series GPU or later, and FSR is ready for everyone - regardless of hardware. There is also a wealth of PC-specific features designed to lean into the PC's capabilities, such as higher detail assets and rendering resolutions, enhanced Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion (GTAO), and Screen Space Directional Occlusion (SSDO) effects. Even more impressive, storage requirements are actually 10GB lower than initial estimates, at a lean 70GB. RELATED LINKS: Best SSD for gaming, How to build a gaming PC, Best gaming CPU |
PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:10 AM Picking the best gaming mouse is far more difficult than it used to be, with more gaming PC brands to choose from than ever before - and with advancements in low latency technology, even the best wireless gaming mouse is an option. Nailing down exactly what you want can be tricky, as it's a delicate balance of finding the right mix of features and design. You have to juggle comfort, ergonomics, performance, reliability, specs, and, as always, aesthetics. Figure out which of these attributes are most important to you, and then take a dive into the comparisons below. While it used to be as simple as buying Logitech or Razer, competition is hot with digital rodents from SteelSeries, Corsair, Cooler Master, and more in 2021. We've tested a wide variety of gaming mice and have narrowed down our favourites based on the genres of games, grip styles, and hand sizes they're most suited to, as well as the more affordable options for those of you that don't mind sacrificing a few features. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 10:58 AM Minecraft Live 2021 has come and gone, but not without a whole lot of detail about what to expect from Minecraft's next update. Well, Minecraft's next, next update. The 1.18 release date with many of the Caves and Cliffs part two features is still coming this year, but now Minecraft 1.19 has been confirmed as The Wild update. The Deep Dark features have been delayed out of Caves and Cliffs part two into The Wild update, and the devs at Mojang showed off how the sculk spreads with a catalyst block, and noisy shrieker traps that will summon the Warden, a new hostile mob that can be found lurking in the Deep Dark biome. We can still expect to see lush caves and dripstone caves, as well as new snowy biomes to explore when the second part of the Caves and Cliffs update releases later this year. For now, here's everything we know about what's coming to Minecraft The Wild update next year including new mobs, biomes, and blocks. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:47 AM If there's one thing Genshin Impact fans love, it's a new character. Mihoyo teased Hu Tao on YouTube and the video swiftly racked up one million views in a few hours. Throw in a bit more mystery, though, and things really go up a level. Genshin Impact is no stranger to leaks, which means we often catch glimpses of upcoming characters before they're completed - as you can likely guess, that leads to a lot of excitement and speculation in the fandom when Mihoyo actually teases something. Genshin Impact fans are currently rather excited about a potential new pal called Kamisato Ayato. We don't have too much to go on - nor do we know what he actually looks like - though it looks like we now know what he sounds like, and that's enough for fans. Mihoyo has released a character teaser (below) for an upcoming big Oni lad called Arataki Itto. He's the head of the Araktaki gang that's been causing some mischief for the Tenryou Commission. Once the video fades to black, though, we hear a short clip of a boy speaking to his lord who says that it's "a pity the Tenryou Commission has arrived". PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 10:55 AM A new story is on its way to GTA Online, and it features not only hip-hop legend Dr. Dre playing himself, it also includes new tracks by Dre - as well as a heist in which you'll have to work with Dre to recover his unreleased tracks from a thief who has stolen his phone. The new mission is called The Contract, and it arrives in the multiplayer game December 15. Since the events of Grand Theft Auto V's main story, co-protagonist Franklin Clinton has built his own agency - an organisation that caters to Vinewood's glitziest clientele and offers to fix up any 'problems' they run into in the course of business. This is where you come in, through your mutual contact Lamar Davis. Once you've linked up with Franklin's agency, you're quickly roped into helping out the fledgling company's first big client, Dr. Dre, who needs your help recovering a phone that went missing on his way to Cayo Perico in last year's big heist. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 10:50 AM Despite releasing over a year ago on PC, developer Guerilla has released a brand-new update for Horizon Zero Dawn. While this patch brings various performance improvements that will benefit all gaming PCs, the biggest additions are undoubtedly Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling technologies. Despite the fact that the game uses checkboard rendering on the PS4 Pro to push resolution up to 4K on the console, the same tech didn't make its way over to the PC version. However, everyone will now be able to boost fps in Horizon Zero Dawn with AMD FSR upscaling, regardless of what brand of GPU you're using. Unfortunately, you'll need one of Nvidia's best graphics cards to use the company's DLSS technology (sorry GTX 10 series owners). However, if you have a compatible card, you should enjoy a solid fps boost, while also maintaining higher visual fidelity. PCGamesN Wednesday, December 8, 2021 1:05 PM Want to know how long Halo Infinite is? 343 Industries has made some big changes to the single-player campaign in this FPS game. Unlike the linear, mission-based campaigns in previous Halo games, Halo Infinite features an open world, RPG mechanics, and a grappleshot to traverse the environment. After the negative reaction to the campaign demo in July 2020, Halo Infinite was delayed until 2021 to give the game some much needed polish. This is also the reason Halo Infinite's campaign doesn't feature co-op at launch, another first for the series. The devs have confirmed that they plan on launching the co-op campaign during Season 2 - this means players may have to wait until May 2022 to fight against the Banished with their friends. It's not all bad news though, as Halo Infinite's free-to-play multiplayer mode was released ahead of time as an open beta, to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary. This is the biggest shake up to the Halo formula in some time, but does the Halo Infinite campaign length suffer as a result? Here's how long it takes to get through Halo Infinite. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 1:14 PM The next patch for Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a big one: 78GB big. Ubisoft today announced that next week's patch "will "will require players to re-download the entire game as part of a data restructuring." The whole base game, downloaded all over again. It's for a good cause, at least. This should make the game load faster and generally run better, which is a nice change for a game to still have the motivation to deliver a year after launch, but maybe not such welcome news if you're on a slow, throttled, or metered connection. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:57 PM While some Chaos gods have perfectly reasonable cover stories for their interests in pursuits like decay and mutation or murder and mutilation (I mean, one can hardly get skulls for one's skull throne at Ikea), Slaneesh is unashamedly 'horny on main' (as middle-aged people like me believe young people might still say, possibly?). This much is clear in a new trailer which introduces the Slaneesh of Total War: Warhammer 3, clad in hot pinks and meat lingerie. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:34 PM Ever since Grand Theft Auto V launched eight years ago, fans have pleaded for Rockstar to release a singleplayer expansion, and received only multiplayer additions. Well, they still haven't announced more singleplayer GTAV, but today they did announce one of the singleplayer stars will return in multiplayer. The next GTA Online update, named The Contract, will focus on campaign co-star Franklin, now running a 'fixer' agency and needs our help dealing with a big client, Dr. Dre. Yup, it's the D-R-E, and he's bringing unreleased new music with him. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 12:33 PM When The Game Awards start cranking out trinkets and marketing tomorrow night, you'll be able to watch the whole shebang from within an official "metaverse experience" in game-making platform Core. Launched on Monday, it's named Axial Tilt, and what I played of it ahead of the live in-game event is rubbish. This is exactly what I have come to expect from the ongoing "metaverse" gold rush: marketing wrapped in a bad video game. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:21 AM The Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker expansion is out now, with plenty of bunnyboys jetting off to the moon. That is, if they're able to login successfully. The servers have been overwhelmed since early access began last week and the thirst for furry friends in maid outfits simply won't abate. Not only do the long login queues persist now it's out properly, but there are plenty of errors plaguing the process which makes the wait even more frustrating. Thankfully, an update is being deployed today that should fix those server errors, increase server capacity, and make the login process a bit smoother. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:09 AM I don't agree that being mean is always the funniest joke, but it is often the easiest joke, and let's keep that in mind as we talk about next year's Mario movie. You know, the one where Mario will be played by Chris Pratt. In the event that the film turns out to be good, I will enjoy it - like how the Sonic film was actually pretty decent, especially James Marsden's star turn. But for now, Untitled Chris Pratt Mario Movie is bad, and a guilt-free laugh. I saw this extremely funny bingo card on Twitter and my eye was drawn to a discussion in the replies. One of the square on the bingo card is "Jump by Kriss Kross plays" and someone else says they think it's "50/50 they choose Van Halen's "Jump" over Kriss Kross", which leads yet a third person to bring up House Of Pain. From this exchange I am 100% sure that a jump-themed song will feature in this film - but the question is which? |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 11:05 AM Ahead of God of War coming to PC on January 14th, an Nvidia blog post has laid bare the enhancements you can expect from the port, as well as the PC system requirements. In fairness it looks like a pretty comprehensive effort, combining expected tweaks like 21:9 ultrawide monitor support with performance-boosting Nvidia DLSS upscaling and even some general graphical upgrades. There's a PC features trailer, too. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, December 8, 2021 10:59 AM Watch out if you're looking forward to playing Halo Infinite's campaign tonight - you'll need to install the game after it goes live. Unlike most other big games this year, Infinite has no preload option, so you won't be able to have it downloaded and ready to go by the time it launches. Though, developers 343 Industries say you can make the download a little smaller by having the FPS's multiplayer beta installed. |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Wednesday, December 8, 2021 2:30 PM An announcement on the Star Wars: The Old Republic website by Project Director Keith Kanneg delivered some bad news to players today. The next expansion coming to the game, Legacy of the Sith, has been delayed into next year. Initially set to release on December 14, it'll now arrive on February 15, 2022. So, you'll need to wait a couple more months to explore the depths of Manaan, discover the new story, and unleash new abilities and Combat Styles. Gamers have become proficient at waiting. So, a two-month delay isn't too bad. The fact that the announcement was made a few days before the expected release of the expansion is what really stings. The new release date also drops it right in the launch window for Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons, and just before the release of another big MMO release, Lost Ark. It's going to be a busy time for MMO fans. For the players In the delay announcement post, Kanneg cites a need for more time to get Legacy of the Sith to a point tha... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Wednesday, December 8, 2021 2:00 PM Rockstar Games announced the next update coming to Grand Theft Auto Online. Releasing December 15, The Contract features the appearance of Dr. Dre, as well as the return of Franklin Clinton. The Contract update for GTA Online features new missions set in Los Santos as you work for Franklin's newly established "celebrity solutions agency." Players will work alongside returning characters, and Dr. Dre himself, as they try to return his lost property. This is exciting news for anyone who wanted to see the original protagonists of Grand Theft Auto V make a return. It's especially exciting for players who were hoping to see some single-player DLC for the main game featuring Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. While this may not be exactly what fans were expecting, it's still nice to see Franklin make a return to the game in some way. This time, Franklin's calling the shots While Franklin had the least amount of experience in Grand Theft Auto V, times... |
