Kotaku Friday, December 17, 2021 11:30 AM Niantic's recently declared intention to better communicate with Pokémon GO players isn't exactly going well. In the last week, trainers have realized that they're all being charged different amounts for a particular item in the game's store, without being told why. And Niantic's explanation to us isn't great. |
Kotaku Friday, December 17, 2021 10:00 AM 2021 was a helluva year for games. Some of it good, most of it bad, and a handful of it truly disappointing, particularly around preserving older titles. Games deserve to be played in their entirety forever, regardless of when they came out, yet this year saw so many of them unceremoniously delisted by publishers… |
Kotaku Friday, December 17, 2021 6:30 AM Japan is the home of Final Fantasy. It's not only where the games are developed, but where some of FF's biggest fans reside. Yesterday, Square Enix announced that it would be halting the sale of Final Fantasy XIV and yanking ads due to server congestion. I'm sure you have lots of thoughts about this—so do folks in… |

PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 10:52 AM RimWorld is one of the 'original' steam early access darlings, an excellent survival city builder game that drops you on the frontiers of known space and expects you to scrape a living surrounded by deadly mechs, weird aliens, and weirdos who most of the time want to kill you. It's a modern successor to something like Dwarf Fortress, an excellent management strategy game, and a wholly solo affair as far as the original design is concerned… but that's not stopped people wanting to play RimWorld in multiplayer. If you're having fun keeping your rag-tag band of misfits alive in a hostile world, imagine how much fun you can have doing it with friends. RimWorld spent five years in early access, and since its full release in 2018 has had two major patches and a premium expansion called 'Royalty', but no 'official' multiplayer support. What developer Ludeon has done, though, is make modding the game especially easier and it's to the RimWorld mods community we turn to get that multi-person frontier experience we're all craving. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 11:56 AM A daily free PC game from the Epic Games Store is now an established holiday tradition. Today, it's Neon Abyss, a roguelike platform game about hunting down an upstart group of New Gods who've taken up residence underneath your favourite nightclub. It's free for the next 24 hours, so head over to the Epic Store and snag yourself a copy. Neon Abyss has a bright, neon pixel art look, but what's most interesting about it is its item system. As in games like Enter the Gungeon and The Binding of Isaac, each run is determined as much by the weapons and items you pick up - and how they synergise with each other - as by the layout of the dungeon itself. It takes a hilariously fanciful approach to weapon design, by the way. There are standard-issue guns that fire boring stuff like laser beams, but you'll soon trade those in for the weirder weapons, like Jimmy and Terry - a pair of cats who fire splitting fish bones at your enemies. You can pick up active abilities like Awful Poetry, which damages all enemies in the current room when activated. Items run the full gamut, too - you might pick up a clown hat that gives you a chance of firing a fake rat from whatever gun you're holding. |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 10:54 AM The best graphics cards are still in short supply, but Nvidia has a bunch of GPUs lined up for 2022. Not only is the green team planning an RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 refresh, but its next-generation RTX 4000 series could also be on the cards for next year. Yet, it looks like the graphics titan plans on revisiting the past before embracing the future, as its new laptop graphics lineup includes a discrete RTX 2050. According to the company's latest press release, its laptop GPU ensemble now includes a GeForce RTX 2050, MX570 and MX550, all of which feature RT and Tensor Cores. The new graphics card selection also boasts Nvidia DLSS, Reflex, and ray tracing capabilities, meaning your next budget gaming laptop could pack more of a punch. Nvidia also says its new GPUs will embrace its Optimus technology, which should help balance battery life and performance. While you'll still need to use your laptop power supply to enjoy peak performance, the optimised power setup should help cut the cord and make light gaming on the go more practical. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 10:02 AM Turn-based strategy games bring out the more cerebral undertones of the genre – the break afforded by 'turns' allows us to think, ponder and plan our moves with as much expert precision as we can muster. Witnessing that mater plan unfold can create untold levels of satisfaction, and suddenly you fancy yourself the master tactician. This genre is also home to the 'one more turn' trope - that feeling of near-addiction that compels you to click the 'End Turn' button just one more time to see what happens. Maybe you're waiting to see the outcome of a daring attack, maybe you're just trying to click through some downtime. We also have the best strategy games on PC if you're looking to expand beyond petty concepts like 'turns'. This is a living list, in the sense that there are many worthy candidates and not enough room to fit them all in. Every so often (especially as new games come out), we'll give this article a refresh and an update to bring give other titles their turn in the spotlight. Also, don't be alarmed that games like Civ 6 aren't on the list: You can check out our guide to the best 4X games to see our thoughts on that particular niche. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 9:38 AM Why do gamers fill their spaces with RGB lights? Because they look flipping sick, that's why. Using smart technology, you can set just the right tone and lighting effects to give your room the perfect atmosphere, and create a true sanctuary for fun and de-stressing. If you've always meant to bring some colour to your rig with a set of RGB lights, the good news is that you can now get 30% off smart bulbs and LED strips from Yeelight, helping to make them just a little more affordable during the expensive holiday season. The offer comes as part of Yeelight's Christmas campaign, and it's true that you can give any room that heartwarming festive feeling with RGB lights. However, they're not just seasonal decorations. Heck, you can keep that in your gaming room and configure them differently every month to move away from the seasonal aesthetic. They open the doors to a wide range of customisation options and that's precisely what makes them so great. While you certainly might want to buy these for yourself during the sale, it's worth thinking about getting them for friends and family, regardless of whether they're a gamer or not. These RGB lights are useful for just about anybody and they're sure to appreciate them. |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 9:30 AM Crusader Kings 3 mods are flying as the game marks a whole year since release. At the time of writing there are several thousand mods available via Steam Workshop alone. It turns out people are not only keen to play Crusader Kings III, they're keen to mod it to high-hell and back again as well. If you're on the fence about buying it, we found it to be a great entry point into the complex world of grand strategy games, although make sure you read our Crusader Kings 3 review, just to be sure. It's still early into the life cycle of CK3, but it's clear that the modding community is already in full flow. Some have already begun work on the ambitious project of making some of the popular mods from CK2 available in CK3. With all this buzz surrounding the mod scene, we figured we might as take a brief look at what's already on offer and let you know what the most promising projects are right now. Expect this list to grow and change over time as the mod scene matures. RELATED LINKS: Crusader Kings 3 review, The best Crusader Kings 3 mods, Play Crusader Kings 3 |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 9:09 AM Network N is expanding its creative team and needs a new, hungry script writer to produce written copy for a range of content, primarily video and web stories. This position is available remotely, though we might need you to head into our recently refurbished, swanky office in Bath from time to time (we promise it's worth the trip, and to pay your travel expenses if you're a remote worker). Whether it's video or web story scripts for Network N's owned and operated sites including PCGamesN, or bespoke scripts for our Most Wanted series - which is syndicated across over a hundred partner sites within Publisher Collective - Network N's creative output is growing by the day. Your words will help us produce sharp, well-written content that stands out from the crowd, and to match ever-growing demand. You'll need to have a passionate, expert understanding of videogames across all platforms, as Network N reaches audiences on mobile, console, and PC. You'll also need knowledge of not only the major video platforms, but social media spaces as well such as TikTok. |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 9:08 AM Want to know how to warm yourself at the Yule log in the Cozy Lodge? This year's Winterfest challenges start with a relatively simple to complete, albeit slightly confusing one. That's because it's not an in-game challenge you can finish by finding a location in the battle royale shooter, but rather one where you need to navigate to by clicking on the main menu. Here are the steps to get to Cozy Lodge and how to find h the Yule log to warm yourself up to complete the first Winterfest 2021 challenge. These are worth doing because if you complete seven and ten Winterfest challenges, you unlock two Winterfest-themed cosmetic items. While you're in the Cozy Lodge, though, you may as well open up one of the Fortnite Winterfest 2021 presents. You can open one gift each day and, depending on which present you choose, you may get lucky and open up a festive Fortnite skin. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 9:15 AM Baldur's Gate has gotten itself an excellent modern revival courtesy of Larian, but when it comes to the series' console-focused spinoff, well… the new Dark Alliance didn't exactly set 2021 ablaze. Luckily, the original Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance came back to consoles earlier this year, and the D&D-themed action-RPG is coming to PC soon, too. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance will be available on Steam, GOG, and Epic at a price of $29.99 USD today. The devs at Black Isle announced a PC port earlier this year, but there was no release date announcement prior to today's launch. (Surprise!) You can make use of Steam remote play to enjoy a bit of long-distance couch co-op. The original Dark Alliance was released in 2001 on PlayStation 2. Ports to Xbox, GameCube, and even Game Boy Advance eventually followed, but it was never previously made available on PC. The game trades in the hardcore role-playing of the BioWare originals for a much more action-focused experience, similar to Diablo. |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 10:34 AM Welcome to the wonderful world of Stellaris mods. If you thought navigating through all of the Crusader Kings 3 mods was easy, or that the 4,000 or so EU4 mods wasn't daunting enough, then we've got a bigger challenge for you. Stellaris, Paradox's grand strategy 4X adventure boasts an entire galaxy of over 22,000 modifications. This game seems to lend itself more to user-generated content than its predecessors, both of which are double Stellaris' age but with far smaller mods scene. Properly charting a course to the brightest of these luminaries while avoiding wasting one's time on buggy or bland black holes is essential for anyone wanting to truly expand their Stellaris experience. As we've done in other mod recommendations, the mods are generally divided into categories. In this case, we've looked at total conversion mods, mechanics mods, 'immersion' mods and finally cosmetics. As usual, most mod choices are subjective so take this guide more as a means of how to search for mods rather than strictly which mods to get although we've done our best to look into what some of the current favourites are. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 8:02 AM The ongoing chip shortage continues to affect the availability of products across silicon-dependent industries, with the most recent example being Nvidia's RTX 2060 12GB GPU. Valve's Steam Deck also fell prey to the shortage earlier this year, forcing the company to delay the launch of its handheld gaming PC by three months. However, in a recent interview with PC Gamer, Valve has reassuringly said that its portable Steam machine will make its February release date. Valve designer Greg Coomer says that the company is "still bummed that we had to move from end of this year to beginning of next. But yeah, all the signs are pointing to us being able to ship in February". Tragically, Valve were close to reaching a point where it wouldn't have to delay the Steam Deck, but were unable to secure around 50 components in the category of "microchip type ICs" from multiple manufacturing partners. Since then, however, members of the Steam Deck team have been devoted to ensure said parts will show up in time. RELATED LINKS: Best SSD for gaming, How to build a gaming PC, Best gaming CPU |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 7:34 AM The Company of Heroes 3 release date is a long way off. Mirroring the work Relic is doing with the Age of Empires community, the team working on the new Company of Heroes entry have been collaborating closely with fans to make this a sequel worthy of the RTS game's storied legacy. That's why it's already been in development for four years, why the pre-alpha is being given out to people right now, and why we're over 12 months from any kind of release window, according to Relic. Still, there's plenty to talk about regarding the game while we wait, so we've created this guide as a running resource of all of the most important bits of information currently doing the rounds. We'll keep this updated as time goes on, but for now we'll focus on what we know about Company of Heroes 3's release date and anything else we feel is important. The campaign layer especially is a bit unprecedented as far as the Relic's history goes, so there's a lot of potential there, as well as a lot of unknowns. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 6:54 AM After a difficult day of making hard choices, slaying monsters, and batting away the judgemental eyes of those you help, you just want to sheath your swords, head home, and perch your posterior on a cushioned seat. Secretlab has once again teamed up with CD Projekt Red to debut The Witcher Edition of its Titan 2022 gaming chair, inspired by the grizzly Gwynbleidd himself: Geralt of Rivia. If the timing seems suspicious, you're right; Secretlab's seat is here to celebrate the release of The Witcher season two on Netflix, but the gaming chair pays homage to the design of the games instead. From embroidered twin steel and silver blades on the back to the White Wolf emblem on the front and metal studs on its wings, the throne resembles the roster of armour you can unlock throughout The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Secretlab even borrows from the card game by pairing every purchase with two exclusive, physical Gwent cards: one with The Witcher Edition chair on and a random one that features either Geralt, Triss, Yennefer, or Ciri. PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 5:43 AM While PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' festive collaboration event with Kakao kicked off earlier this month, the winter fun isn't stopping there. Krafton is testing a winter-themed racing mode on the battle royale game's test server, LABS. The suitably titled Winter Race mode puts you and several others on one of Vikendi's five race tracks. You can select the Motorbike, Pickup, Coupe RB, Quad, or Zima as your vehicle, with each one providing its own weapon and set of equipment. You'll need to drive through checkpoints as you reach the finish line, so don't wander off the track for too long. While some of the fun in PUBG's racing mode comes from shooting someone off their vehicle, you won't be able to do so until ten seconds into the race. If you spawn in after being eliminated, you'll be invulnerable for five seconds. You'll also stumble across plenty of crates during your race. Some are typical ammo drops, though others give you new weapons for your ride and speed boosts - no blue shells, though, as far as we can see. RELATED LINKS: PUBG new map, PUBG weapons, Play PUBG |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 5:40 AM Galactic Civilizations IV's most recent 0.65 update brings two new civilisations to the galactic stage, and today we're going to be looking at the Drath Freehold. Anyone who pre-orders the strategy game will get instant access to the alpha where you can take these ancient, manipulative gossipers for a spin yourself. You don't last as long as the Drath have without knowing how to stay ahead of the game. They revel in the wars of others and there are rumours that the Drath are behind every major conflict in the galaxy. It's entirely possible they started that rumour themselves. About the only thing the Drath are willing to do openly is press their claim to the Arcean Republic - the homeworld of the other new race introduced in this update. This highly specific hatred of the Arceans is the only thing about the Drath that's more widely known than their penchant for making money from other races' conflicts. In terms of racial traits, there are several that warrant further exploration. RELATED LINKS: The best 4X games on PC, The best turn-based strategy games on PC |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 6:41 AM Co-op games can reward you like no other genre. Games offer up magic in lots of different guises, but working with a friend to achieve a goal is, arguably, where they really shine. So what are the titles that will really pull friends together and offer the best group-based thrills? The best co-op games are the ones that let you explore new worlds with a buddy by your side, triumph over evil as a team, introduce a novice to the wonder of the medium, or simply beat each other over the head with questionable weaponry for kicks. Single-player games can be a life-swallowing hoot, but those virtual victories taste all the sweeter when you share them with friends. Whether that's sitting next to your mate with a gamepad in hand or working together in beautiful harmony via voice chat, co-op games produce some of the best gaming moments around. So embrace companionship and say so long to playing solo. These are some of the very best co-op games for you to share with your favourite people. |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 5:17 AM The best SSD can make all the difference when it comes to PC gaming, and high capacity PCIe drives are more affordable than ever. Sure, getting a hold of the best graphics card possible is a priority for most enthusiasts, but since stock from Nvidia and AMD is scarce, it's wise to focus on the parts you can upgrade. So, if you still have a rickety old hard drive whittling away in your rig, you might want to consider a switcheroo, as Western Digital's 1TB NVMe SSD is currently half price. The WD Black SN750 is a fantastic investment that could give your old PC or gaming laptop a new lease of life. Featuring respective read and write speeds up to 3,430Mbps and 3,000Mbps, this sappy solid-state drive should help Windows boot faster and save you from staring at loading screens when playing your favourite games. Over on Amazon US, you can grab 52% off a WD Black SN750 1TB SSD, shaving its price down from $249.99 to $119.99. If you reside in the UK, you can also snap up a similar SSD deal, as it's currently got 21% off at £85.79. RELATED LINKS: Best SSD for gaming, How to build a gaming PC, Best gaming CPU |
PCGamesN Friday, December 17, 2021 5:36 AM Looking for Genshin Impact codes? MiHoYo's charming open-world game is notoriously addictive, and if you're anything like us, you're constantly on the lookout for more Genshin Impact primogems and other goodies. Gathering currency in Genshin Impact can be quite the grind - while you can earn mora and primogems by completing quests such as daily commissions, an injection of extra funds will always be gratefully received. Fortunately, the developers occasionally send out free gifts in the form of codes that can be redeemed online. These Genshin Impact codes are released periodically. They frequently appear in MiHoYo's special programs that reveal information about future updates coming to the game soon, but are also released to celebrate milestones or to coincide with Genshin Impact events. Most codes also only work for a limited time - so it's a good idea to redeem them as soon as possible in case you miss out. Codes can only be redeemed once per account. Redeeming them is simple - log in to the Roblox website and navigate to their promo codes page, where you can enter your code, and the item will automatically be added to your account straight away. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, December 17, 2021 11:03 AM Earlier this year, Black Isle Studios and Interplay Entertainment announced they were porting the old 2001 hack and slash Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance to PC and consoles. It came out on PlayStation back in summer, alas they didn't give a date for PC. But, surprise! It's today! PC folks can finally try out the Baldur's Gate that console users first experienced 20 years ago. I did a full playthrough this summer and had a lovely time, at the expense of my partner, who I made sit through one of the jankiest couch co-op games in existence. |

But we (I) gather ourselves and chat FPS news, like how PUBG is going free to play, Overwatch actually has something new, and lots of Halo Infinite stuff. They didn't have much to say about it at the time, but last night they announced it properly. Named Nine Sols, it's an action platformer with combat inspired by Sekiro. Honestly, they still don't have much to say about it beyond that, but they have released a gorgeous poster featuring a cat-like character that you can see in full below. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, December 17, 2021 6:21 AM You know what Christmas was missing? The unmatched fear of being chased by terrifying killer robots through a shopping mall. This is the eighth mainline game in the long-running pizzeria-based horror series (I know, there are loads of spin-offs too), and for the first time it will let players properly roam free, rather than be tied to a desk monitoring cameras. |

Like last year, the company will present a virtual presentation to everyone online. The presentation will feature GeForce Senior Vice President Jeff Fisher and Vice President and General Manager of Automotive Ali Kani. The two will go over the "latest breakthroughs" in both accelerated computing and autonomous vehicles, respectively. No other details were given about the presentation at the time of writing. Will we get a new Nvidia GPU at CES 2022? At last year's CES, Nvidia used the stage to announce the release of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card. Rumors, speculation, and even leaks have suggested that Nvidia is set to release an RTX 3050 GPU in the coming months. The RTX 3050, according to the late... |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Friday, December 17, 2021 10:15 AM After a delay kept it from its initial December launch date, Valve says the Steam Deck is still "on track" for its new February 2022 release. The update came via PC Gamer, which conducted an interview with Valve designer, Greg Coomer. "We do feel like we're on track for that," Coomer said in the interview. "We're still bummed that we had to move from end of this year to beginning of next. But yeah, all the signs are pointing to us being able to ship in February." The original delay came, according to Valve, due to the component shortage plaguing the entire industry. Despite so many other pieces of hardware — GPUs, CPUs, consoles, etc. — still being nearly impossible to find, Valve thinks it'll be okay for the initial release. But even with the February launch for the Steam Deck, many will obviously wonder if it will be a soft or hard release. According to Coomer, the company will be prepared for a full launch. ... |

Not to be confused with Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, which disappointed earlier this year, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was recently re-released for consoles.
