Kotaku Monday, January 3, 2022 11:00 AM I'm looking down at my spacebar in absolute shame. It's just plain white. And yet, it could be the absolutely beautiful work of keycap maker, Hirosart, containing a diorama of Pokémon in their natural setting. |
Kotaku Monday, January 3, 2022 9:10 AM As the unstoppable virus of Sundays continues its gruesome pandemic into a new week, it seems more humans than ever are turning to video games in order to survive. PCGamesN Monday, January 3, 2022 11:25 AM Dungeons & Dragons' influence on videogames can't be overstated. However, while many of the best RPGs owe their mechanics to tabletop gaming, digital adventures struggle when it comes to replicating the flair and theatre of a classic DnD adventure. Enter Elden Ring, FromSoftware's latest Soulsborne game that, judging from a few hours with the network test, feels primed to capture the imaginative dramatics of a dedicated dungeon master. Sure, RPG staples like Baldur's Gate, Divinity, and Dragon Age also emulate tabletop storytelling, and they do it well, but Elden Ring's pacing and atmosphere feel similarly authentic without sticking so rigidly to Wizards of the Coast's fantasy world; wherever you go you get the sense that your adventure would pair perfectly with the scene-by-scene narration of a dungeon master. There are plenty of similarities between Hidetaka Miyazaki's Soulsborne games and pen-and-paper escapades, however, by embracing a completely open world, Elden Ring becomes a treasure chest of decision-making and opportunity where every vista feels like a fork in the road. Do you chat to the friendly looking pot? Explore the ruins over yonder? Pick a fight with the knight on horseback? Or try to sneak past them? PCGamesN Monday, January 3, 2022 10:44 AM Steam just clocked its highest-ever number of concurrent users on the platform, hitting nearly 28 million players logged in January 2. The new record, 27,942,036, comes after a period of steady growth that began last July. Early January is typically a strong time of year for Steam player counts, thanks in part to the holiday season for workers and students in many countries getting a bit of holiday time off. Over the past two years, that effect has been magnified by the covid-19 pandemic, which has resulted in more people spending more time indoors near their PCs. In November, Steam broke its previous record by logging more than 27 million concurrent users, and it set a new high water mark over the weekend. It's worth noting that the majority - 20 million or so - of the 'concurrent players' counted in this record-setting figure weren't playing a game at the time, they were simply logged into Steam. Still, the number provides a pretty good idea of the platform's growth over time. The most-played games of the moment are some perennial favourites: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends make up the top five, with Naraka: Bladepoint and Amazon Games' fledgling MMORPG New World creeping into the top ten as the only games on that list released in the past year. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, January 3, 2022 8:00 AM The first rule of video game club (apart from not talking about video game club) usually involves saving the world somehow. We do our best to rescue others from harm, to avert world-ending disasters, and give everyone around us the happy ending they deserve. But if there's one thing I've learned about myself in 2021, it's that I'm a cruel, heartless robot who will happily toss others under the bus if they don't provide any material benefit to me. Or at least I am when I'm playing Unsighted, the gorgeous and criminally underrated action RPG from Studio Pixel Punk that puts a ticking time-bomb inside each of its characters' metallic chests which, if left unchecked, will remove them from the game entirely, preventing you from gaining some potentially very handy upgrades to help you in your quest to fight back against your human oppressors. It's an ingenious system, as you're not only fighting against the hordes of enemies that appear onscreen, but your own ineptitude. |
