God of War devs confirm Steam pre-loads

God of War is, at last, ditching PlayStation exclusivity with a PC release. If you're especially excited about that fact, you might want to get in as close to launch as you can manage - and luckily, the devs at Santa Monica Studio have confirmed that pre-loads will soon be available on Steam, as well as when you can expect them to begin.

Pre-loads for God of War on Steam begin on Wednesday, January 12 at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT. Since the God of War system requirements recommend 70GB of hard drive space, it's safe to expect a similar download size for the game. Sadly, the devs have not yet provided any specific unlock times for the game, or info on pre-loads via the Epic Games Store.

The God of War release date is set for January 14 on Steam and Epic, and you can pick it up at a price of $49.99 / £39.99 / €49.99.

Forza Horizon 5 devs working on fixes for wheels, EventLab, Festival Playlist, more

We sure like Forza Horizon 5 around these parts: Playground's latest open-world racing game is big, beautiful, and fast as heck. Since its launch, however, there have been a few persistent issues making players a bit carsick, and Playground Games has identified the ones it's working on fixing now that the holiday break is over.

Incorrect scores and point totals have been a problem in Forza Horizon 5 for the past couple months. In the latest community update, Playground says it's working on fixing a problem with Accolades not unlocking correctly and, in some cases, resetting. The devs say there's some wording in Accolade descriptions that's a bit misleading too - and these are all issues that'll be addressed in the next update.

Players have been asking for the ability to save and edit their creations in Forza Horizon 5's EventLab post-creation, and Playground says it's currently working on adding this functionality to the feature - that'll be out in "an upcoming update," the studio says. It's also working on making sure that the Festival Playlist can be completed by everyone, and that players are retroactively awarded points they missed out on in bugged challenges during Series 1 and Series 2.

Cold War RTS Warno is set in a convincingly plausible alt-history 1989

Cold War-era RTS game Warno is gearing up to hit Early Access, and developer Eugen Systems is taking an interesting approach to its setting. The studio is keen to include historical orders of battle, but it also needs a fictional war for its NATO vs. Warsaw Pact factions to fight - and so, it's tweaking history in a couple key places, as it explains in the latest devblog.

Warno's first major divergence from history as it really happened is a bloodless coup that ousts reformist Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and his allies from office in 1987. Historically, Gorbachev was reelected in 1990 and left office after the August putsch in 1991, but in Warno, the party hardliners take control of the USSR much earlier, replacing Gorbechev with a troika representing the Communist party, the army, and the KGB.

In the game's fiction, this leads to swift condemnation from the western superpowers, which enact new sanctions against the USSR. US president Ronald Reagan, heeding the most hawkish of his advisers, rescinds a key nuclear treaty, and NATO ramps up military training exercises in western Europe, taking a weather eye toward the crucial Fulda Gap - a heavily militarized region in Germany seen as the natural approach into Europe for Russian tanks, and vice-versa.

Hidden Deep is a horror Metroidvania inspired by Aliens

The first half of the Metroidvania portmanteau already has plenty of allusions to the Aliens franchise and a subtle horror vibe, but the upcoming indie game Hidden Deep aims to go much further in the direction of scares. Blending Metroidvania-style exploration with more emergent sandbox gameplay, Hidden Deep is looking like one to watch ahead of its launch into Steam Early Access later this month.

Hidden Deep is described as a "2D action and exploration sci-fi thriller set in a mining and research facility more than a mile under the ocean floor". After a group of researchers disappear while investigating a strange phenomenon, you play as a team out to discover what happened. You can take control of your team members directly for exploration in the traditional 2D platformer style, or give them commands so that you can take on multiple objectives at once.

There's a narrative-driven story mode with bespoke levels, as well as a challenge mode where you can play through randomised levels either alone or in co-op. Developer Cogwheel Software plans to take those local co-op features online over the course of Early Access, while expanding the story and adding features like a level editor.

Elden Ring release date: the latest details on Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin's game

It finally happened: we now have an Elden Ring release date. Previously announced at the Microsoft E3 conference a few years ago, Elden Ring has been confirmed for Xbox One and Windows PC and will be produced by Bandai Namco, and developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki's studio, FromSoftware.

With the Dark Souls and Sekiro director at the helm, we already know we're in for mystery, nightmarish boss designs, and a whole lot of dying. The announcement trailer gives off some very Dark Souls vibes. Although Miyazaki confirms that Elden Ring gameplay is heavily based on the Souls series, combat will play out very differently due to the "open and vast environment".

Keeping things FromSoft, Elden Ring is also a third person open-world dark fantasy RPG, but what's new is that it features a collaboration with Game of Thrones writer and author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin. As a result, we're anticipating plenty more in terms of storytelling than we're used to from Miyazaki, without sacrificing any of the rich, lore-soaked environment and boss designs we know and love from the Souls games. Elden Ring will also feature music from Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro composer Yuka Kitamura.

For Honor makes a comeback in Valheim

While For Honor didn't quite get the Rainbow Six Siege-style uplift its dedicated fans might've hoped for post-launch, it's continuing to get updates into 2022 and has enough players to sustain itself. One fan has brought For Honor's legacy into 2021's megahit survival game, Valheim, and the results are gorgeous.

Redditor Financial-One-3717 has created a viking village in Valheim "inspired by" For Honor's own Viking Village map, and even if it's not a one-to-one recreation, it's still impressive. The coolest bit is the small inlet flanked by towers and encircled by walls, where ships can come in to deposit their hauls.

For Honor's Viking Village was introduced back in 2017 as part of the game's third season of content. If you're coming to this from the Valheim angle, For Honor's a multiplayer game where fighters of various historical factions - including Vikings - are smushed together into a big brawl, with minimal regard toward pesky things like the actual timeline of history.

Minecraft Java and Bedrock – what you need to know

So, you want to know about the differences between Minecraft Java and Bedrock? What even is the Minecraft Java edition? Stay a while and listen - we've got the information you need.

First of all, Minecraft Java is the official name for the original version of the popular crafting game created by Mojang in 2009. It's the version you buy via the Mojang website, although it's also available via PC Game Pass now. Either way, it only runs on PC. Minecraft Bedrock is a new version of the game created by Microsoft in 2017 that simultaneously replaced and unified the console, mobile (formerly known as the Pocket Edition), and Windows 10 store versions of the game.

That means Bedrock is available across multiple platforms, and as PC players we're spoilt for choice as we can choose to play either one of them. Thanks to the recently released Minecraft launcher, we can also manage both installs in one easy place. There are more differences than just what platforms the respective Minecraft versions run on, however, so let's dig into this a little more.

The best action-adventure games on PC in 2022

The best action-adventure games have been capturing the thrill of an expedition ever since Indiana Jones swung across a chasm with his trusty whip to retrieve an idol from a booby-trapped tomb. From Pitfall through to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, we got our fix through platformers or point-and-click adventure games, but then 1996's Tomb Raider melded the two together and perfected the action-adventure game - and it's only grown in popularity since.

The PC boasts some true classics of the genre, from classic tomb raiding to games with enough exploration to fill an entire sandbox - not the one in your backyard - so we've put together a list of the best action games around. This includes some of the finest games ever made on PC, action-adventure or otherwise, including several titles that changed the entire gaming industry.

There's no Uncharted here, as emulation or PlayStation Now doesn't count, but we'd take any one of these games over Sony's series. Here's the definitive list of the best action-adventure games on PC.

Apex Legends tier list: the best Legends to use in Season 11

With the release of Ash, Apex Legends players now have 19 Legends to choose from when taking on the battle royale known as the Apex Games. Each Legend has their own skills, playstyle, and personality, with plenty of choice for every type of player, whether you like to be aggressive, defensive, or offensive to the senses (cough – Caustic – cough).

Your ideal Legend pick depends on your strengths and weaknesses – your experience, gamesense, movement skills, and aim all factor in, as does your squad composition and whether you're playing with friends or a team of strangers. That said, although all the characters are relatively balanced, there are some Legends who have pulled away from the pack due to their powerful abilities, and some who are more niche picks.

We've ordered the Legends here in order of general effectiveness, to help you decide who to play if you're after the big win. We're aiming this list at the average player who has a reasonable grasp of the game, but we'll also point out the best characters for absolute beginners, and mention the ones you'll see in top tier competitive play.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen trailer shows off a new destination

You still have a month to wait for Destiny 2's next expansion, but at least now you've got a teaser to take a look at. Bungie has released a trailer showing off The Witch Queen's new destination, Savathûn's Throne World, and it's a real trip.

Savathûn's domain has a green and mossy vibe, with wildlife ensnaring familiar Hive architecture. The red flora of the world sticks out against the dull and worn backdrop. Of course, the trailer isn't merely about taking in the scenery as fighting soon breaks out. We've fought the Hive before, but we're up against Savathûn's Lucent Brood this time. It's the Hive as you know it, except the enemies have been infused with the same powers you have, which means the Crucible isn't the only place you'll have to worry about a Titan charging about.

There are plenty of other features coming to The Witch Queen expansion, too, such as the ability to forge your own weapons and a new weapon type called the Glaive - think of a spear or a polearm, but Destiny-ed up. We're also getting a new six-player activity and a raid, though we haven't got too many details on those yet.

Humankind is getting an African cultures DLC

Historical 4X game Humankind is getting its first expansion pack this month. The Cultures of Africa DLC is set to launch January 20, and will add six new cultures to the 60 existing cultures present in the base game, with one new culture per era.

The DLC, which you can pre-order on Steam and the Epic Games Store, also adds new wonders to build or discover, seven new independent peoples, and 15 new narrative events. From the earliest to most modern, the new cultures are the Bantu, the Garamantes, the Swahili, the Maasai, the Ethiopians, and the Nigerians.

The Bantu are an expansionist culture in the Ancient era, good at claiming lots of new real estate early on in the game. In the Classical era, the Garamantes are an agrarian culture that built the innovative qanat irrigation system, which makes them terrific for producing food in their territories. The Swahili, a merchant culture, are the new option for the Medieval era, and are experts at coastal seaport trading - perfect if you've got an extensive shoreline.

How to get a Minecraft cape

How can you get hold of a Minecraft cape, you ask? You may have heard rumours, whispers of a mythical piece of cloth that adorns the shoulders of the most elite Minecraft players. The legends speak of myriad Minecraft capes handed out to the lucky few over the years. Word on the block (sigh) is that capes also modify the appearance of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found in end ships, as they occupy the same space on a player's back. Needless to say, Minecraft capes are highly coveted, but they haven't been easy to get.

Those who ventured to a MINECON event prior to Minecon Earth 2017 each received a cape; each year a different colour and design. Even rarer still are the personal capes gifted to lucky individuals in recognition of their achievements, like Reddit user u/billyk_ who was given a personal turtle cape for suggesting that turtles be added to Minecraft.

Unless you can come up with a suggestion as good as turtles (unlikely) or can time travel back to Minecons past, it looks like you're out of luck when it comes to obtaining any of the Minecraft capes that are currently flapping around out there. You can try on a cape with the help of Minecraft mods, though it'll only be visible to you - or if you own Minecraft Bedrock edition, you can get access to capes through skin packs. There is a way to get your hands on a cape for Minecraft Java edition, though - read on to find out how.

Far Changing Tides Release Date PcOkomotive and publisher Frontier Developments are just about ready to let the atmospheric discovery game FAR: Changing Tides loose onto the world. Shown off last year in June, Changing Tides dives deeper into the world imagined by FAR: Lone Sails. Of course, the adventure isn't quite the same. New challenges and dangers await when FAR: Changing Tides hits its release date of March 1. The big change between the two games revolves around how you traverse the environment. Lone Sails saw you on a solo adventure while piloting a massive ground vehicle. You needed to keep the metal beast running, completing environmental puzzles to continue on the journey. FAR: Changing Tides, however, puts you out on a large ship traversing the ocean.   Some gameplay elements remain the same. Like the vehicle before it, the ship is a clunky monstrosity that requires plenty of TLC to keep it chugging along. There will still be light puzzles to solve, and a world of mystery to uncover. However, ...

Hitman 3 Year 2 updateHitman 3's getting its first major Year 2 content reveal on January 13 during a reveal stream. It'll feature more information on graphical enhancements, additions to the Elusive Target mode, and the inclusion of VR, as well as new footage. That's only the beginning, too, with the developer planning to bring more content to Hitman 3 throughout the year. Arguably the biggest inclusion in January's update is the VR mode. It was previously exclusive to the PS4 version of the game, and it wasn't clear if VR support would ever come to PC. But, on January 20, players will be able to take out their targets in a more personal manner. The already excellent Hitman 3 is looking to have a pretty strong year in 2022.   Hitman 3 has a big year ahead The first addition that Hitman 3's Year 2 content will bring is ray tracing. The advanced lighting system impacts most mid-range graphics cards pretty hard, but players who are able to use it without issue are i...

Nvidia DLDSR downscaling DLSSIn a very sudden move, Nvidia has revealed that its upcoming Game Ready driver will include Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution (DLDSR) resolution scaling tech. It seems to be a direct response to AMD's own Radeon Super Resolution tech, even though the inner workings of each technology vary significantly compared to the similar results. This news comes from out of nowhere, but it is interesting to see nonetheless. Nvidia's DLSS has made some big advancements over the years, and it's nice to see Team Green take algorithmic resolution scaling one step further. DLAA was another step in this direction, but that doesn't scale the resolution; it just cleans up visual artifacts and improves the sharpness of objects in images. DLDSR does something a little more complex by downscaling the image from a higher resolution to one that matches your monitor, which is useful for increasing the quality of the image.   DLDSR isn't a very catchy name, is it? Deep ...

Forever Skies trailer titleThe highly anticipated Dying Light 2 Stay Human will finally come out next month. Once that happens, it will inevitably become the talk of the town for a while until the next big release arrives. In the middle of all the marketing hype, though, former Dying Light developers have prepared a project of their own. That project comes in the form of Forever Skies, "a first-person action survival sci-fi game that takes place on a destroyed and deserted Earth in the wake of a massive ecological disaster." Just today, Forever Skies received its first teaser trailer, so players can finally catch a glimpse of what this ambitious new game has in store. Unlike other teasers, this Forever Skies trailer features light gameplay consisting of simple exploration across dilapidated buildings. The visuals look incredibly sophisticated and decidedly "AAA," which only makes sense since the developers have had ample experience working on AAA games. Out of everything the trailer sh...

Overwatch 2 Lego Set Delayed Bastion Brick SkinLego has delayed an Overwatch 2 set that originally would have gone on sale in February. The Danish toy giant has chosen to delay the product whilst it reviews its partnership with Activision Blizzard. This decision has been made in response to the ongoing Blizzard allegations regarding the unacceptable treatment of its marginalized employees. The statement emphasizes that Lego is not comfortable with the lack of progress made since the allegations came to light. More specifically, it believes that its "treatment of female colleagues," and failure to create a "diverse and inclusive environment," are problematic.   Moving forward Lego intends to review the partnership between itself and Activision Blizzard. The statement does not specify that the product has been canceled, but rather that it won't launch on February 1 as initially intended. It seems possible that the Overwatch 2 set may release later if Blizzard makes progress in regards to workplac...
