For a young up-and-coming NBA player, the phone call telling them they've been selected for their first ever All-Star game can rank as one of the most defining experiences of their entire career. Provided, that is, they're able to pause the Pokémon game they're playing to take the call.

While the game has its fans (hi!), there's no escaping the fact that in a wider context Battlefield 2042's launch has been a disaster for Electronic Arts. Fan reception has been hostile, playercounts have dropped like a stone and the company won't even disclose how many copies of the game have been sold.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 devs get a second chance at Vienna

Euro Truck Simulator 2 will be a full decade old this year, and in that time, the devs at SCS Software have only been getting better at making more realistic recreations of real-world locations. That's why we're getting this like the Austria rework, bringing old content up to the standards of the modern game. Today, the devs have shown off a bit of their second attempt at Vienna.

"As the largest city in Austria, recreating this historic capital and important truck routes was by no means an easy task," the devs say in the announcement. "Since the release of ETS2 in 2012, time, tools, skills and technology have changed significantly, allowing our teams to create a more realistic and detailed recreation. Some of the detailed parts of Vienna you will be able to see and drive past include The Wiental and Danube Canal, which was a challenging addition for our map team."

Relevant for the truckers, you'll also find a new industrial area south of Vienna "including an oil refinery, warehouses, and a supermarket", all of which should provide some more distinctive pickup and delivery locations.

Pokémon's new and improved online TCG gets a beta this month

Are you looking at the success of Yu-Gi-Oh: Master Duel and wondering when that other big anime-adjacent card game you remember from the 90s and early 2000s is going to get a similar treatment? The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon TCG Live last year, and it looks like it's getting nearer to release. Some of you will even be able to play it as soon as next week.

A "limited beta" for Pokémon TCG Live kicks off in Canada on Tuesday, February 22 at 12pm PST / 3pm EST. It'll be available on PC (both Windows and Mac) as well as iOS and Android devices, with cross-play across all the clients. The devs say that "Canada is the only market identified for limited beta launch at this time" in an official FAQ, but don't rule out beta access for other regions in the future.

Progress from the beta will carry forward into the full game at its global, free-to-play launch. And if the devs are already committing to saves carrying forward, hopefully it won't be too long before that full launch arrives.

Super Dungeon Maker is Mario Maker for Zelda on PC

Ever since Super Mario Maker debuted on Nintendo's WiiU, players have been clamouring for a Zelda-themed version that would allow them to create their very own dungeons to share and explore with others. Super Dungeon Maker is, effectively, exactly that - it's a sandbox game that lets you use all kinds of Zelda-style building blocks, just without the licensed Zelda characters. Instead of playing as Link, you're a chicken - a chicken with a sword.

While you won't find Zelda, Link, or Gannon in Super Dungeon Maker, the trade-off is that you can find it now in Early Access on Steam. You play as a wobbly yellow chicken with a sword who can manage just about anything Link could in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. There are clay pots to pick up and smash, tall grass to cut down, and switches to slap to raise and lower colour-coded bollards nearby.

The best part is that you can make your own dungeons from scratch in Super Dungeon Maker. Once you've cleared the introductory level, you can pop into a sandbox in the town map to build your own challenges, which you can then share with other players.

Sims 4's next pack is delayed so it can launch in Russia

Last week, EA and Maxis announced that The Sims 4's upcoming game pack, My Wedding Stories, would not launch in Russia, citing issues with federal laws around the depiction of LGBTQ characters. After backlash against the decision from Sims fans around the world, the devs have announced that My Wedding Stories will launch in Russia after all, "unaltered and unchanged".

My Wedding Stories will be delayed by a few days, and will now launch worldwide (including in Russia) on February 23.

"It's equally important for us to stand by our values, including standing against homophobia, and to share stories like this with those who want and need it most," the devs say in the announcement. "With this in mind, we've reassessed our options and realized we can do more than we initially believed and we will now release The Sims 4: My Wedding Stories game pack to our community in Russia, unaltered and unchanged, featuring Dom and Cam."

Gloomhaven's Jaws of the Lion expansion is coming to PC

You might know Gloomhaven as the giant box on the shelf at your local Barnes & Noble, as it's a massively successful fantasy board game that began as a Kickstarter campaign in 2015. However, there's also a very good PC edition of Gloomhaven, and that version will be expanding with the Jaws of the Lion expansion in the near future.

Jaws of the Lion originally launched as a standalone addition to Gloomhaven, and was originally a Target exclusive. It's a prequel story to the events of the base game, and it was meant to be an easier introduction to Gloomhaven's complex systems of cards, combat actions, and turns.

The digital version of Jaws of the Lion will work a bit differently. Sold as add-on DLC, you'll unlock its 25 new missions once you've completed the second scenario in Gloomhaven's main campaign. It's adding four new mercenaries: the Valrath Red Guard, the Inox Hatchet, the Human Voidwarden, and the Quatryl Demolitionist. There are 10 new items, 10 new types of monster, and 22 new city events as well.

Win an RTX 3070 Ti GPU to celebrate Eve's glossy gaming monitor

It's official: the Eve Spectrum will get a glossy coating option on its 4K 144Hz and QHD 280Hz models, making it the first gaming monitor to shed the traditional matte finish. This is something the company first teased back in December after getting its hands on LG's new glossy polariser, and it's not short of demand. Eve held a poll with its community and found that at least 1,417 people are interested in the innovation.

Glossy displays are a dime a dozen in the smartphone and smart TV space, but the reason it's taken so long to come to monitors is because of the additional research and development costs it brings - after all, the old adage does say 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. What might seem like a simple layer from the outside actually requires fundamental changes to the assembly line, calibration process, and durability testing.

Armed with the enthusiasm of its fans, Eve explains that it convinced LG to take the plunge, and glossy Spectrums are inbound. These include the same specifications we praised in our Eve Spectrum 4K review, including an IPS panel and HDMI 2.1. It might be too much to ask for better DisplayHDR 600 implementation given this is a new finish and not a new model entirely, but the deeper blacks that glossy screens afford might make forgoing HDR a little easier.

yae miko genshin impactGenshin Impact Version 2.5 just dropped, bringing in tons of new content for players to enjoy including a new world boss and playable character. This playable character is the popular and lovable Yae Miko, the overseer of the Grand Narukami Shrine and owner of the Yae Publishing House. As someone with close ties to the Raiden Shogun, Yae Miko is a powerhouse of her own, zapping her foes to oblivion with her Electro powers in the latest Genshin Impact trailer. It's not a surprise her power levels are high. She not only has ties with Raiden Shogun, but other archons like Zhongli and Adeptus like Ganyu. But surprisingly, her life is a little more chill than you might expect for such an ethereal figure, as she trolls her staff with an electrifying story. In the trailer, she tells one of the shrine maidens of her powers, wiping the floor with enemies with her Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst. It's all for the process of writing a story, as Yae Miko is a light novel author ...

Dead by Daylight Sadako killerAt this point, the 2016 multiplayer survival horror game Dead by Daylight has crossed over with more horror franchises than one can seemingly count. Not only does the game feature characters from popular horror games like Silent Hill and Left 4 Dead, but it has also brought over some truly iconic faces from beyond the world of games, such as Michael Myers from Halloween and Pinhead from Hellraiser. Late last year, developer Behaviour Interactive teased yet another crossover for the game, this time with the esteemed Japanese horror franchise Ringu, or The Ring as people in the West know it. And just yesterday, Behaviour Interactive revealed that, as one would expect, this crossover made it possible to include Ringu's Sadako in Dead by Daylight. According to the developers, Sadako will make her way to the game on March 8, and she will join the title's ever-expanding roster of playable killers. She comes as part of the "Sadako Rising" event, and will go by the n...
