Classic city builder Pharaoh gets a remaster Steam demo

We already knew a 4K remake of classic city-building game Pharaoh was on the way, and now you've got a chance to give it a whirl for yourself. Pharaoh: A New Era has come to Steam Next Fest, a now-live festival on Valve's storefront with hundreds of demos to try for free.

Pharaoh: A New Era overhauls the classic 1998 city builder with a complete graphical remaster in 4K HD and a modernised UI. The game features all of the original's content, including 50 missions and its Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile expansion, as well as a full map and mission editor. So, while you should find gameplay to be largely the same as you remember if you're a fan of the classic, the remaster will totally refresh the look to make it a far more modern experience. Publisher Dotemu shared a handy side-by-side comparison clip of the original and remake last year, which you can catch below to get a taste of what's in store.

Now, there's a demo to try out through the game's Steam page, ahead of the game's arrival sometime later this year. It's only a taster sample of the game, as you'd expect, featuring a tutorial with four playable missions, some "motivational tracks" to help you get used to the day-to-day of ruling your city, the game's classic "fire in the city", and, er, "ostriches to feed your inhabitants (with love)". Oh no.

How to unlock the horse in Elden Ring

Are you trying to unlock the horse in Elden Ring? Unlike Dark Souls 3 which features a linear game world, FromSoftware has decided to mix things up with Elden Ring by introducing a large open world to explore. It's difficult to move around while wearing leather armour at the best of times - thankfully, Elden Ring players have access to a spectral steed, a special horse named Torrent that can be called upon whenever you need it.

You don't need to use the horse to complete Elden Ring, but you might miss out on several helpful mechanics if you don't. There are many areas across the map called Spirit Springs which Torrent can use to gallop across the sky, all without ever taking fall damage. This allows you to skip lengthy treks across mountainous regions with the press of a button.

To top it off, you can fight on horseback using traditional weapons or spells. This is perfect if you want to avoid taking any damage and if Torrent takes too many hits, you can always resummon it by consuming a flask of crimson tears. Here's what you need to do to unlock the horse in Elden Ring.

Steam Next Fest: Crossfire Legion, intense C&C RTS from Homeworld 3 dev

Steam Next Fest is underway, and fans of RTS games might want to try the Crossfire: Legion demo from developer Blackbird Interactive - the team behind the upcoming Homeworld 3 and Hardspace: Shipbreaker - which looks like a more action-focused mix of StarCraft and Command & Conquer: Generals.

Crossfire: Legion is a strategy game spin-off from the popular Korean online FPS Crossfire, which recently got an Xbox release with a campaign made by Alan Wake and Control developer Remedy. However, we played the RTS last month and can confirm that you don't need to know any of that to get stuck into Crossfire: Legion and enjoy yourself.

The game's planned for an early access release in the next few months. You can play the RTS right now on Steam, however, as it's got a demo as part of Steam Next Fest. Be warned that it's a PvP multiplayer-only preview, which Blackbird Interactive says will be the basis for the first early access release.

Cryptominers may have found a way to unlock LHR Nvidia RTX GPUs

Nvidia's LHR graphics cards are specifically designed to deter crypto mining, but that hasn't stopped enthusiasts from developing workarounds. While circumventing the green team's lite hash rate measures previously came with caveats, a new BIOS modification tool threatens to unlock the full mining capabilities of limited RTX 3000 series cards.

Spotted by MyDrivers, the new "Nvidia RTX LHR v2 Unlocker" removes hash rate limitations on both GeForce RTX 3000 and RTX workstation cards. According to the tool's creator, Sergey, it's "simple, intuitive and requires no advanced knowledge" to use, all while boasting the ability to flash and modify a new GPU BIOS.

The LHR unlocker relies on specifically tailored drivers, which automatically download after installation. Naturally, this means that unless the process is reversed, the cards won't be suitable for PC gaming, but will be fully capable of mining cryptocurrency. In terms of performance, Sergey's Github page claims that unlocking an LHR RTX 3080 could result in a hash rate increase of up to 100MHps, surpassing the abilities of Nvidia's dedicated 90HX mining GPU.

This 2TB Samsung NVMe SSD is at its lowest price ever on Amazon

As our Steam libraries grow larger with each passing sale, we never seem to have quite enough space on our gaming PC for all the videogames we'd like to install. Worse still, as 4K gaming becomes more commonplace, the best PC games seem to only ask for more and more storage space (here's looking at you, Total War: Warhammer 3.) Thankfully, this can be quickly remedied by installing one of the best SSDs for gaming, like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus.

Don't let its slim M.2 form factor deceive you, as this SSD has a 2TB capacity, leaving plenty of room for your favourite games and just about anything else you might need. It features a PCI Gen 3 interface too, allowing for sequential read and write speeds of 3,500/3,300MB/s, which should keep loading times low and system responsiveness high.

At just $199.99 USD, it's at its lowest ever price on Amazon, with 60% ($300) off its $499.99 price tag. UK shoppers can share in this bargain too, as the SSD is also the cheapest it's ever been on Amazon UK too, at just £179.98 GBP.

Here's every reason why you need PC Game Pass

It's no exaggeration to say that Game Pass is revolutionising the way that people play games, and expanding the horizons of gamers around the world. A few years ago, trying a new game would have meant coughing up a chunk of hard-earned cash – but Microsoft's Game Pass lets you dip your toe in without having to buy the whole bath.

The selection of games included in Game Pass for PC encompasses enormously popular FPS games like Halo: Infinite, open-world favourites like Fallout 4, cutting-edge racing games like Forza Horizon 5, iconic strategy games like Age of Empires 4 – all for under $10 a month. The selection is so diverse, no matter what your preferred type of game, you're sure to find something that you can sink hours into.

Today, huge portions of the population watch television through streaming services, and it's not hard to imagine a similar future for the video game industry. Games are getting more and more expensive all the time (and we, the downtrodden masses, can't always keep up financially). However, Game Pass provides a convenient and affordable way to access a vast library of popular games.

League of Legends patch 12.5 notes – Bees! champion skins, Elise VFX update

The updates keep on coming, LoL fans. League of Legends patch 12.4 has made its way to the live Rift, bringing a raft of new skins, champion balance changes, and - of course - steely new Champon Renata Glasc. That means it's now time to see what's headed our way with its follow-up update. While the latest round of skins gave Kassadin, Shen, and Qiyana some dazzling new Shockblade styles, this fortnight's offerings are fare more whimsical. Let's take a look.

The new skins coming with League of Legends patch 12.5 add more champions to the game's Bees! alternate universe, with four new looks on the way. As you'd expect, the names are pun-tastic, with Heimerstinger, Nunu and Beelump, Orbeeanna, and BZZZiggs joining the skin line. You can check out the in-game clips of these in action and their splash art in the skins section below.

As is very often the case when a fresh patch hits the PBE, there aren't any balance changes up for testing just yet, but we can probably expect a bunch to arrive there soon for a test drive. So, keep an eye on these notes as we'll update them with everything you need to know ahead of the patch's launch.

The best JRPGs on PC in 2022

Want to know what the best JRPGs on PC are? JRPGs are a very different beast to western RPGs, which you'll find in our best RPGs on PC list, and while some tactical RPGs can also use tropes found within JRPGs, there's a lot more variety on how a fight plays out. Sometimes it's just a turn-based combat system with a small number of characters, but more modern JRPGs experiment with realistic movement. While tactical RPGs have a fixed chess-like structure, JRPGs allow you to switch between characters.

Therefore, the genre has significantly evolved since the early days of both the classic NES era Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games, ranging from vast open world adventures to more refined turn-based combat. Some games do away with the fantasy in favour of a more realistic setting. Others focus on adding to the game's overall package to flesh out the world.

Here are the best JRPGs on PC, and no, before you say anything, the list isn't just games by Square Enix despite how tempting it was to include them all. The PC JRPG landscape has a lot to offer, including cult classics and new favourites.

With them, you can craft all sorts of valuable gadgets such as arrows that inflict elemental damage, items that heal status ailments, and consumables that boost rune acquisition for a short time.

Once you do get a cookbook, though, you still need the ingredients listed in each recipe to make the items. Knowing how to make recipes in the first place is a crucial step and it's not an easy feat to find all of the cookbooks. So if you want to learn how to make specific items to aid you on your adventure, here's everything you need to know about Elden Ring cookbooks.

     Elden Ring map fragment locations

Want to know where you can find Elden Ring map fragments? As you explore the vast regions of The Lands Between in this open-world game, the places you've visited are gradually revealed on your in-game map. This allows you to easily navigate back to a safe location or return to a dungeon to slay monsters that you weren't quite up to fighting when you first found them. There is, however, a faster way to open up an entire area.

In specific locations in every region, you can find map fragments that fill in the blanks, showing you all of the named locations and Elden Ring dungeons in the local area. Knowing where everything is in the region is particularly handy in your search for valuable items such as Elden Ring Ashes of War or Elden Ring cookbooks. You can also use your newfound knowledge to hunt down all of the optional Elden Ring bosses.

Since these key items are so valuable for exploring each area in The Lands Between, we have a list of all of the known Elden Ring map fragment locations so that you can scoop them up as soon as possible.

When Broken Rules announced their colourful 2D swingathon Gibbon: Beyond The Trees at the beginning of February, I was immediately on board. Finally, I could live out my dream of sliding down tree branches like Disney's Tarzan, all while playing another gorgeous adventure from the makers of Old Man's Journey and Secrets Of Raetikon. Admittedly, I was surprised when I saw it was going to be part of this week's Steam Next Fest. The developers have said upfront that the game is only around an hour long, and with this week's demo stretching to a generous 20 minutes, part of me's now quite sad that I've already seen a third of it in action.

The other part of me, however, is absolutely thrilled, and it's all down to my gibbon's sick, speed-boosting backflips.

Nier Reincarnation Roadmap FFXIV

The NieR Reincarnation and FFXIV crossover event is officially coming to the global version of the game, according to the game's latest roadmap. In addition to a new Dressing Room feature that will appear sometime after May 2022, the roadmap also mentions various other new features, crossovers, and main story content.

Square Enix showed a similar roadmap during a live stream celebrating the first anniversary of the game's Japanese release. During that same live stream, it revealed that an FFXIV crossover event would be heading to NieR Reincarnation sometime after May. Until now, it was unconfirmed whether the crossover event would also appear in global version of the game.

For the most part, the roadmaps are the same. However, the global version will get a new chapter of the Sun and Moon main story in March, which is one month earlier than the Japanese version. Some key new features include monthly-updated Hidden Stories, new weekly arena ranked rewards, new difficulties for event quests and exploration, and costume bonuses. Sometime after May, Square Enix also plans to add a Dressing Room feature. Details are still scarce as to what this new feature will entail.

Nier Reincarnation Roadmap FFXIV

Finally, the NieR Automata and NieR Replicant crossover events are coming back to NieR Reincarnation in February and March, respectively. The NieR Replicant crossover event previously appeared in September 2021, while the NieR Automata event appeared earlier in July 2021.

NieR Reincarnation is immediately available on iOS and Android devices. The dressing room feature and FFXIV crossover event will appear sometime after May 2022.
