PCGamesN Tuesday, May 10, 2022 6:02 PM  Following the leak of a 2001 demo build of the troubled FPS game Duke Nukem Forever, the founder of Apogee has published some thoughts about what went wrong and ultimately led to developer 3D Realms handing the project off to Gearbox Software almost ten years later. It was Duke Nukem Forever, he says, that wound up sinking 3D Realms. "Anyone expecting much of a playable game will be disappointed," writes Apogee founder Scott Miller, in a post titled 'The Truth About DNF'. "The game's brilliant trailer from that period definitely over-represented what was actually playable in the game." "DNF is the game that destroyed 3D Realms and ended up getting the company sold to an investor in Denmark," Miller writes. At the time the leaked build was created, Apogee was generating revenue from games like Max Payne and Prey, while Duke Nukem Forever was simply burning through money with no end in sight. He says the studio was understaffed, lacked a working development roadmap, and was constantly rebooting in order to adopt the latest in 3D rendering technology. |
PCGamesN Tuesday, May 10, 2022 5:56 PM  Someone has made a Minecraft mod that will turn the building game into the Lego game of your dreams. It makes sense as Minecraft is all about building, and Lego is a toy all about the same thing. Both focus on creativity and allow you to let your imagination run wild and put together whatever you can think of. They go together well, which is why we wrote about this excellent Minecraft piston that was built entirely out of Lego. We also briefly mentioned a Redditor called Cirelectric, because they posted an image showing off zombies in the style of Lego minifigs in-game. It was cute, but Cirelectric has now made a full mod pack for that style. You can download the mod yourself if you want, which gives a new skin to most Minecraft mobs you'll encounter. Overall, it's an incredibly cute pack, with only one mob being an outright eldritch horror. You might expect that to be the Enderman, but you'd be wrong; it's the pig. In what we can only assume is an artistic choice that us mere mortals can't comprehend, the pigs have humanoid arms but still crawl around on the floor. Will it pick up where Mass Effect 3 left off, or will it be a fresh start, like Mass Effect: Andromeda was meant to do? As it turns out, a piece of promotional art may have tipped BioWare's hand, revealing that Commander Shepard may be an important character in the new space game. On its official site, BioWare sells an attractive lithograph version of the teaser art it revealed last year on N7 Day, which shows a party of explorers venturing into the caldera of a volcano. The scene is depicted from a bird's eye view, so it's impossible to tell who any of the characters are. However, a YouTuber called MrHulthen spotted an interesting detail in the product description on the BioWare store page. Originally, the text included a passage that read, "Shepard's final quest may have ended the threat of the Reapers but at great cost including Earth itself. While Shepard and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are wondering what's next." |

Out of the two teases we've had before, we can gather that the game will bring the return of Liara and the Geth. In the first teaser, we watch as who we assume is Liara searching for something. The broken piece of metal with the N7 logo hints that it may be Shepard she's looking for. The next game will no doubt answer our burning questions on how the Normandy crew fared after the last game. The company announced a refresh today for the existing lineup based on the RDNA 2 architecture. The new models from AMD include the Radeon 6950 XT, 6750 XT, and the 6650 XT. These models all offer slightly more gaming performance than the standard versions, but unsurprisingly cost more. Gaming performance increases vary per model and per game, but you can generally expect small performance gains. This refresh is nothing that invalidates the previous lineup. These new models are differentiated from the existing options by higher clock speeds, improved Infinity Cache, and faster GDDR6 memory. Other than that, these are the same GPU chips. Whether or not these improved models are worth it will just depend on the performance targets you want to hit. And, of course, the size of your wallet. The Radeon 6950 XT starts at $1,099 US... |

The Chinese developer has been rolling out the massively popular gacha games, Genshin Impact and Tears of Themis, as well as teasing the arrival of a new game Honkai: Star Rail. All this success is allowing HoYoverse to experiment with even more games. And now, the Genshin Impact developer has released a new teaser for its upcoming game, Zenless Zone Zero. The teaser comes in form of a good, old-fashioned countdown. It's paired with a calendar marking off the days until the eventually full-fledged reveal. The calendar has circled off May 13, implying that we'll get a full trailer or reveal of some sort this Friday. It previewed a few of the new zones coming to Diablo Immortal while teasing a boss enemy. Diablo Immortal had a closed beta not long ago on mobile, but it wasn't the full game. The developer update introduces some never-before-seen content, which will be playable when the game lands next month.
