GTA 6 likely entering next phase, as Rockstar posts dozens of jobs

GTA 6 could be heading to Vice City, and there might be information on the game's characters, radio stations, and production code name. That's what we learned on July 18, but now there's even more, as listings on Rockstar's careers page point to a massive upcoming development effort, potentially directed towards the new Grand Theft Auto.

Rockstar is currently advertising openings at a variety of its global studios -- including the central GTA hub, Rockstar North -- and covering almost every game-making discipline, from animation to mission design, and vehicle physics.

Rockstar San Diego is looking for an associate designer for "open-world events", which sounds very Grand Theft Auto-related, while Rockstar New York is looking for an additional someone to oversee "adoption and acquisition" of GTA+, the new Grand Theft Auto-exclusive subscription service which launched in March, and could likely feature as a component in GTA 6's online offering.

Valorant fans create their own honour system – and it's perfect

Valorant, Riot Games' quickfire, free-to-play FPS, has often struggled to engender good behaviour and friendly competition between its fans. But now, a Reddit thread suggests a potentially perfect new honour system -- things could be looking up.

User u/rookcookie's post gained some traction this past week, as the bottom-fragging Brim player suggested an honour system to reward teammates for good behavior. Despite their poor in game performance, their teammates remained cheerful and encouraging; positive attitudes that deserve commendation.

The interesting part of this idea is that it isn't an entirely new one. Positive feedback options aren't new to the online FPS scene, or even to Riot Games. League of Legends implemented an honour system back in 2012. Along with being able to report toxic players, LoL players can honour their teammates for staying cool, shotcalling, or being friendly and in earlier implementations, even honor opponents.

CS:GO, which has one of the largest online FPS scenes, also has an honour system in place. During the post-match lobby, players can choose to honour teammates for their attitude, game knowledge, and skill.

Overwatch takes the honour system a step further. Players can still honour each other for categories like sportsmanship, shotcalling, and being a team player; however, the Overwatch system calculates these endorsements into an endorsement level that is shown on a player's account. Players with a high endorsement level earn additional XP and are rewarded regularly with free loot boxes.

The best grand strategy games on PC 2022

Grand strategy games are an emerging sub-genre of strategy games that typically encompass long periods of history (or, if sci-fi, time), and involve many intricate layers that players need to contend with. It's not just about winning that war or setting up this mine; you've got to develop infrastructure, set policy, and manage internal dynamics over the long term.

This genre often involves the exploration of the map in order to better understand the resources at your command and the position of your enemies – and your friends. Lines blur when picking apart the edge cases, but by and large count on grand strategy games to make the management of your faction the primary part of the experience. They often over-lap with other genres within strategy gaming, especially 4X games, but a key difference can be in framing. Games like Civilization, for example, typically put the emphasis on managing military resources in particular, with other mechanics in a supporting role.

It can also be just as much a case as to what the accepted definitions are and how a game is marketed. In any case, this is definitely a genre worth exploring in more detail, and we've put together a guide on the best grand strategy games around.

The best free VPNs for PC in 2022

If you want the benefits of a VPN, but don't have the room in your budget for another subscription, you'll probably be happy to discover the best free VPNs. There are a wealth of free options available from a wide range of providers, but it's worth keeping in mind that they won't be quite as robust as their paid counterparts.

Of course, before diving into the wonderful world of free VPNs, it's important to learn how each works before trusting it with your data. Naturally, even if a VPN is free, it still costs its provider money to run, so it's important to identify any potential hidden costs or caveats associated with seemingly free services. This includes agreeing to your gaming PC becoming an exit node for other users, intrusive browser ads, and the risk of your data being logged and sold to third parties.

That said, there are still free VPNs out there that can provide a great service without paying a monthly fee. While you'll still need to pay to experience the best VPN subscription and all its intrinsic benefits, you should still be able to find a good balance between usability and security when using a free version of a VPN.

It's been a hot minute since a cute animal adventure scarred me for life. Ever since the first Shelter game where my sweet baby badger got snatched up by the claws of a giant eagle, I've learned that these adorable animal games can be pretty ruthless. It's the maternal connection that gets me, the pang of loss for something you were supposed to protect. It shoots right between the ribs and straight into the heart. Ow.

Endling - Extinction Is Forever is one such game. You play as a fox mother trying to keep her four cubs alive in a post-apocalyptic world, and from that premise alone it definitely feels like developers Herobeat Studios are deadset on making me cry. After playing through the game in two evenings, Endling didn't end up being the emotional gut punch I had braced myself for, but its story of scrappy survival did have me reaching for the tissues by the closing credits. What can I say, I see an animal in distress and I'm a weepy mess.

Nintendo has confirmed the global closure date of the 3DS and Wii U eShops. In mid-February 2022, the company announced that it would close the legacy platform eShops in late March 2023. A new update to the announcement page reveals that the stores will close in the West on March 27, 2023, and in Japan on March 28, 2023.

In the West, Nintendo will no longer let users add funds after August 29, 2022, and purchase anything after March 27, 2023. Nintendo's Japanese website provided a more exact time for the shop closures in the country. Adding funds will no longer be possible in Japan on August 30, 2022, at 1:30 PM JST. The 3DS and Wii U eShops will close in Japan on March 28, 2023, at 9 AM JST, which would be equal to midnight in UTC.

The Japanese and UK websites also have a special mention for Fire Emblem Fates, the 3DS game where players can purchase additional routes via DLC. Players of the game can download the story routes until the eShop closure date in the respective regions. However, Nintendo UK will cease selling the main digital copy of Fire Emblem Fates one month earlier on February 28, 2023.

After the 3DS and Wii U eShop closures, users will still be able to download digital content that they have purchased previously for the foreseeable future. The Japanese page added that Nintendo will eventually cease the download services as well.

The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops are available until March 27, 2023, in the West and March 28, 2023, in Japan.

Untamed Isles Coming To Steam Early AccessUntamed Isles is an MMORPG coming to Steam Early Access later this year. This new game from developer Phat Loot Studios is a monster-catching adventure in the same vein as games like Pokémon or TemTem. However, Untamed Isles has a twist that makes it stand out from the crowd. Instead of hunting for hundreds of unique monsters, Untamed Isles only has 10 creatures that can be mixed and matched. The core feature of Untamed Isles is limb-swapping. Each "tame" has a head, torso, tail, front legs, and back legs which can be interchanged at will. Since the limbs of the 10 tames can be swapped, the developer says there are over 1.5 million potential combinations. Untamed Isles was recently funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign, and the trailer for the game can be viewed below.   A press release describes the game as one in which "players will find tames, unique creatures that inhabit an ever-evolving world, with interesting looks and even more intriguing features."...
