I was all geared up for some science fiction-tinged Spice Girls shenanigans, but I was left bitterly disappointed. However, I'd already installed it, so I decided to check it out and see what kind of game it actually is. Turns out that Victoria 3 is a grand strategy game, just like its Paradox stablemates Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron. Trying to classify Victoria 3 is pretty damn important. Unlike, say, the Total War series, Paradox's grand strategy titles are differentiated by a lot more than their time periods. Hearts of Iron its WW2 military ticker on its sleeve, while Crusader Kings (my personal fave) is secretly an RPG, just one that happens to cast you as the ruler of a country, rather than a random wandering murderer. Figure that out and you grasped the appeal of the game, especially for people who may lack interest in - or be downright put off by - the historical era it covers. |

One of the new playable River City Girls 2 characters is getting time to shine, as WayForward released a new Marian trailer and talked about the heroine on the PlayStation Blog. Formerly, Marian was known as Billy Lee's girlfriend and tended to be in need of constant rescuing. Here, she's a playable character beating up baddies in River City Girls 2. She's a fast character in-game who uses moves inspired by boxers and wrestlers. This means in addition to punches like KO Cutter, she'll use command grabs. In the original game, she only ran a shop. But here, she and Provie will join Kyoko and Misako as they fight through the city. Here's her new trailer: There's also a new piece of concept art offering a closer look at Marian's design in River City Girls 2. It offers an idea of how her Elbow Driver aerial attack should look, as well as designs looking at some of her different punches and grabs. WayForward's been doing quite a bit to introduce returning and new River City Girls 2 characters like Marian. For example, in September 2022 the Sabu family got their own "villains" trailer. The cast as a whole River City Girls 2 will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on December 1, 2022 in Japan and in 2022 worldwide. The season 2 of the viking anime Vinland Saga is coming early in 2023. Twin Engine and Studio Mappa unveiled the show's opening theme in a new trailer, which also set the premiere date. It opens on January 9, 2023 and will stream worldwide. The first season premiered back in mid-2019. Crunchyroll will offer it as part of its Winter 2023 season. The Vinland Saga Season 2 trailer begins with Thorfinn living as a slave after the events of the first season. He's instructed by his owner to befriend another slave, the Englishman Einar. The Season 2 opening theme song is "River" by Anonymouz. Though the first season was produced by Wit Studio (which produced the first seasons of Attack on Titan), production for the second season is being handled by Studio Mappa (which is animating the ongoing Chainsaw Man anime). Key members of the first season staff are reprising their roles, though, including Director Shuhei Yabuta, writer Hiroshi Seko, and character designer Takahiko Abiru. Sega announced that it had established a new subsidiary in Singapore on October 13, 2022. Sega Singapore Pte. Ltd. will act as the company's representation in Southeast Asia as it undertakes marketing while intensifying its research of the region's market. Sega Singapore is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japan-based corporation. By establishing an office in the hub of Southeast Asia, Sega aims to investigate the possibility of establishing more business operations to deliver entertainment content from Japan to the region. Sega has been promoting and releasing its games in Southeast Asia long before it established an office in Singapore. Sega Asia, which also covers China and Korea, has handled regional releases of both internal titles like Persona and Like a Dragon as well as external cooperations, such as Aniplex's Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles. The company and its subsidiary Atlus have also set up their own Facebook pages dedicated to the Southeast Asian audience. However, it remains to be seen whether Sega would add localization support for the region's languages to its upcoming games. Besides Sega and Atlus, Bandai Namco had also established a dedicated Southeast Asian office in Singapore after splitting its Asian branch in the 2010s. It spearheaded the English localization of franchises that were previously exclusive to Japan, such as Super Robot Wars. In recent months, Bandai Namco also confirmed Thai and Indonesian language supports for its newest upcoming titles, like One Piece Odyssey and Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom. According to Deadline, Halia Abdel-Meguid will be the executive producer and writer of Netflix's new Death Note live-action series. Abdel-Meguid is a "longtime fan" of the series, and will be working with Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things) on the show. Netflix previously released a live-action film that reimagined the story as an American one. [Thanks, ANN!] The Death Note series will be yet another "new take" from the Netflix film. It is unknown if that means it will be set in America again, or if it will take the story back to its native Japan. Abdel-Meguid previously worked on The Devil in the White City and Miss Annity. She has also worked with the Duffer Brothers before on their adaptation of The Talisman. News of a new Netflix live-action adaptation of Death Note first appeared in July 2022. Back then, we only knew that the Stranger Things creators would be working on it. Death Note originally came out in 2003 and is a supernatural suspense manga. It was a collaborative effort between Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Death Note focuses on Light Yagami, an honors student in Japan who finds the titular Death Note. The Death Note is a tool that shinigami (Death Gods) use in order to kill people, and with it, he goes on a crusade against criminals. L, a renowned detective, takes on the case, and the first half of the series centers on their cat-and-mouse game. The new Netflix adaptation of Death Note is in development. Fallout 4 will look a bit different on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2023, thanks to an upcoming next-gen update. Bethesda announced it as part of its Fallout series 25th anniversary. A lot of the details about it are still vague, but the company did confirm that when it arrives, it will be a free update for people. The announcement did bring up a few points players can look forward to for the game. Fallout 4 will get a performance mode after the update. Like such features in other games, it will mean higher frame rates and resolution quality. There will also be additional Creation Club items. In the original version of the game, people could purchase Credit packs to purchase additional content for the game. Bug fixes will also be a part of this patch. The 25th anniversary update also included a nod to things happening in Fallout 76. People can take part in Spooky Scorched until November 8, 2022. This is the game's Halloween event that involves trick-or-treating and opponents wearing costumes. People can also claim one free item per day in the Atomic Shop as part of an anniversary event. Those free gifts will be available October 25-November 8, 2022. Fallout 4 is immediately available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Following its launch in 2015, Bethesda released story-based DLC like Automatron, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World, as well as additional add-ons like the Contraptions, Vault-Tec, and Wasteland Workshop sets. The Nintendo Switch is home to plenty of ports, from revivals of Wii U games to surprisingly great versions of Dragon Quest XI, the Ori games, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it feels like Persona 5 Royal is the latest to be considered among the best. The fact that the hit to the performance isn't that bad, coupled with a file size that isn't too big, the included content, and portable nature, all works in its favor. It means that one of the best JRPGs out there still remains just as incredible even on a platform that might not initially seem ideal for it. My time with the Persona 5 Royal Switch port is primarily spent in Handheld mode on a Switch OLED, which means a few built-in "edges" to help ensure it is the best portable performance for it. While the level of detail and intricacies suffer a bit when exploring the city or running through Palaces, especially if an area is crowded, it runs admirably. There's the same pretty consistent 30FPS gameplay as there was with the PS4. The textures may not be as sharp, but the aesthetic direction, frequent use of cutscenes, and design decisions mean that it still looks good even if it isn't as crisp or flashy as the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 version. It is also only 14.2GB on the system before patches, which is about half the size of the original PS4 version. Considering how compact it is and the compromises required, the port works so well. There's also the element of what a new Switch port of a game brings to the table to make it unique and, while Persona 5 Royal doesn't do anything to really stand out, it does excel at what it is. That is, the full version of the game. The DLC for the PS4 version is here, and you can start using things like costumes once April 12th rolls around. (The items will be waiting in a box in Joker's room.) You also have access to the so-powerful-they're-game-breaking Personas like Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro, Messiah, and Thanatos. Possessing these opportunities to be extremely powerful, while also paying tribute to past Persona games and in-world series like Featherman is an entertaining extra. The hybrid nature of the Nintendo Switch also makes the Persona 5 Royal experience more attractive. Granted, this isn't the only version to boast this benefit. The PC port of Persona 5 Royal is Steam Deck verified. But given the wider available of Nintendo's system, lower price, and fact that it also developed a name for itself as an RPG console, it feels so much more at home here. I've found I'll save the big moments, such as taking down a boss, experiencing a Confidant outing, or favorite story beat, for the big screen. My system goes right into the dock for those. But if I'm taking Mementos requests, going through some grinding in a dungeon, or even building up Joker's stats, that time is spent in handheld mode.
There's a sense of completion that comes with the Switch port of Persona 5 Royal that helps make a collection a bit better. The system is gradually becoming a great go-to for a Shin Megami Tensei collection. In the Persona line, we now have Persona 5 Royal and the Musou spin-off Persona 5 Strikers, as well as Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and soon Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable. SMT III Nocturne HD Remaster and V both appear here. The Nintendo Switch Online library in Japan includes the original Shin Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei II, and Shin Megami Tensei if…. Gaps remain, to be sure, but it feels like it is gradually moving forward in a good way. The Nintendo Switch library of ports is only guaranteed to grow as time goes on, but it feels like the nature of Persona 5 Royal, its contributions to its series and genre, and its general ambiance will always guarantee it as spot as one of the best ports on the console. It's a joy to play and, some texture and resolution issues compromises aside, is a fairly complete version of the game that isn't too distant a relative from its older PS4 sibling. Persona 5 Royal is available now on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. There is no free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for the game. Shueisha announced that Square Enix's upcoming Dragon Quest Treasures game will inspire a manga series. Titled Dragon Quest Treasures: Another Adventure Fadora no Takarajima (Fadora's Treasure Island), it will be published in Shueisha's V Jump magazine. Serialization will begin in the January 2023 issue of the magazine, which releases on November 21, 2022 in Japan. With a story by Masaki Hara and art by Yoichi Amano, the Dragon Quest Treasures manga will tell a "unique 'another' story." Details are still scarce, but this means that it will be more of a companion manga to expand on the story of the game rather than a simple retelling. More information will come at a later date, according to Shueisha. Dragon Quest Treasures is an upcoming "Treasure Life RPG" from Square Enix. It will feature Dragon Quest XI's siblings Erik and Mia as they hunt for treasure in the land of Draconia. Many of the monsters in Draconia can be befriended and added to the siblings' party, where they will help with the treasure hunting. They will give clues as to the whereabouts of treasures, provide support in battles, and help players traverse the world. People will get to see a new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer tomorrow and, appropriately enough, it seems like ghost type Pokemon could be the stars. The official Pokemon YouTube channel shared the video, which will premiere on October 25, 2022 at 6am PT/9am ET/3pm CET. The title of the video is a series of question marks, while the description features a number of periods. There is a hint at the contents of the new Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer, however, as the ghost Pokemon Gengar appears peeking out from behind a bush. The character first appeared in the original Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue games, and consistently remained a staple for the series ever since. The environment around Gengar is also rather shadowy and ominous. Here's the trailer, which will go live tomorrow. The last Pokemon Scarlet and Violet trailer introduced Iono, the electric-type gym leader who is also a streamer. There was a two-part reveal involving her, as the second video showcased her partner Pokemon. That is the new frog-like electric-type Bellibolt. G-Mode announced that another deep cut from its back catalog will be ported to the Nintendo Switch. Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible New Testament III: Mugen no Eiyuu will join the expanding G-Mode Archives+ Switch collection in Japan. The game was first released in 2010 for mobile phones on the iAppli and EZAppli platforms. Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible New Testament III joins the previous two games as part of G-Mode's G-Mode Archives+ line. The Last Bible New Testament games are phone-based spin-offs of Atlus' Famicom-era Last Bible titles. Loosely based on Megami Tensei, the Last Bible games struck a more traditional fantasy style and tone, with closer similarities to Dragon Quest than the darker urban and occult leanings of the core Megami Tensei games. The Last Bible New Testament titles also featured classical Megami Tensei mechanics like demon negotiation and fusion. Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible New Testament III is a sequel to the first two games, and involves Leon and Luna, the "Children of the Gospel" from the previous game. The game is set on in the world of Damir, which is under threat from demonic beasts. The protagonist dons a mysterious "COMP" bracelet, attracting the attention of the demons and enabling them to gain their allegiance to fight by their side. G-Mode has been rereleasing its mobile phone-based catalog to Switch since 2020. Once specializing in Java-based phone games, G-Mode was acquired by Marvelous in 2015. It rereleased the first Last Bible New Testament title in July 2022 on Switch in Japan. No release date has been specified for the other two games. The new Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games video is out, and this time the SSBU Kazuya Kazama DLC is used as an example to show when "Too Much is Just Right." The video is dedicated to over-the-top animations in game, showing how the extra emphasis and action can be an effective means of showing intensity and enhancing the experience. The video kicks off with the most extreme example of "too much is just right" regarding Kazama in SSBU which involves his roundhouse into Triple Spin Kick that sees his upper and lower body twist in a way that is unrealistic and, in a normal human, would likely break their spine. Sakurai pointed out that this isn't a bug, and cites how that same animation appeared in the original Tekken. He then explains how more exaggerated motions lead to animations looking better, and more moderate ones aren't enough. Sakurai cited other games when discussing how far fighting game animations have come over the years. He began by discussing Dragon King: The Fighting Game, which eventually became the original Super Smash Bros., and how technical limitations meant arms were connected to the torso and limited to different angles. He also showed an example from Virtua Fighter, which featured Lao performing that same sort of roundhouse kick as Kazama with the same exaggerated movement. The life-size statue of the Scopedog from Armored Trooper Votoms is on display with its iconic Red Shoulder at Inagi Pear Park since August 1, 2022. The limited-time color was originally set for display until October 31, 2022. The Inagi City Tourism Bureau has newly announced that it will extend the display through 2022 Christmas Day. People in Japan can still see the special design from Chirico Cuvie's Red Shoulder Battalion until December 28, 2022. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!] The life-size Scopedog statue from the Votoms series made its first public appearance at the Inagi Pear Park in March 2020. The city of Inagi is best known as the birthplace of Kunio Okawara, the mechanical designer for Votoms and the inaugural Mobile Suit Gundam. While Sunrise is better known for showcasing the life-size statue of RX-78-2 Gundam in Odaiba and Yokohama, it also placed 1/5 scale statues of Amuro Ray's Gundam and Char Aznable's Zaku II in Inagi in 2016. The Armored Trooper Votoms franchise began when its first TV anime show aired in Japan in 1983. The Real Robot show tells the story of Chirico Cuvie, a soldier who has to survive on his own after his former army pursues him for discovering a secret. The protagonist is also known for piloting a customized version of Scopedog, the 3.8 meters (12.5 feet) tall Armored Trooper. The series also had multiple OVAs released afterwards, such as The Last Red Shoulder in 1985 and Pailsen Files in 2007. The latest OVA entry, Votoms: Alone Again, appeared in 2011. Armored Trooper Votoms has also made multiple appearances in the Super Robot Wars crossover game series. The latest title that included the series' storyline is the 2019 Super Robot Wars T. Bandai Namco also added Chirico's Scopedog with a brand-new loadout in an Expansion Pack for the globally-available Super Robot Wars 30 in April 2022. There's now a way to celebrate Halloween in Cult of the Lamb, as the Blood Moon Festival event is live. Between October 24, 2022 and November 10, 2022, people can take part in new activities, activate a new ritual, and get new Follower forms. You'll also start seeing Followers you've lost along the way again roaming around the world. Here's a trailer going over the Cult of the Lamb Blood Moon Festival and its Halloween-themed activities. It takes its time going through the new things people can do in the game. It starts off with a peek at the Lamb performing the Blood Moon Ritual. When performed, you can spend 40 pumpkins to create a Blood Moon for three days. This makes your fallen Followers appear again. When they return, you can send the Lamb around to capture them in their book. You can unlock the Blood Moon Tree during this time. This also means new decorations, like ones that resemble the Dia de Los Muertos sugar skulls. Following that, the three new Follower forms appear. It isn't uncommon for games with simulation elements to celebrate special occasions. For example, Animal Crossing: New Horizons includes a Halloween event. Cozy Grove also features a Fall Festival at the end of October. Cult of the Lamb is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Halloween Blood Moon Festival will run until November 10, 2022. Shown in the trailer, Genshin Impact version 3.2 will bring new bosses, area expansions, and characters. This includes the Dendro Archon, Nahida. Nahida rules over the nation of Sumeru and commands the Dendro element, the newest element in the game which was introduced at the start of Genshin Impact's 3.0 update. But there's another character bound to pull players into a frenzy — Scaramouche. Scaramouche is a popular character in the game, introduced all the way back in an event near Genshin Impact's launch. This marks the game's official release after a long series of updates and improvements. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord entered Early Access back in March 2020, and garnered a fairly strong player base.
