We got another good look at said magic slinging at this year's Summer Game Fest, which has seemingly resulted in several reports of it being like a wizardy Call Of Duty. But having played a 30 minute demo of it this week, I reckon it's nothing like COD at all, really. Instead, it's more like Doom / your other retro shooter of choice, but one that carries itself with a frightening seriousness. Sometimes, that's fine. There have been plenty of these smaller sorts of blockbusters that have successfully struck the right balance of silly to serious, with the best ascending to a place of endearment. But so far, Immortals Of Aveum hasn't filled me with hope that it'll join the likes of Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, or like, The Darkness, as a twinkling beacon of silly fun. |

I've played just over three hours of a very early Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor build, and while it's both missing some parts and could benefit from the odd tweak, it's already capable of pumping out dopamine as efficiently as any established VampSurvs-alike. |

Ancient ruins of a house to be admired and contemplated, but not fit to live in. The ceilings are too low, the stairs too narrow, the pipes an afterthought. Jagged Alliance 2 isn't that far gone, but it's getting there. It gives lots of options for fine control but using them is largely gated behind esoteric, repetitive keyboard shortcuts, which get doubly cumbersome during its awkward transitional moments between real and turn-based movement. It's about leading a group of mercenaries to overthrow the tyrannical queen of a fictional island. A guerrilla warfare sim with great strategic freedom and probably the best turn-based tactical combat ever, all buoyed away from self-seriousness by a campy, irreverent tone and intentionally over the top characters. What I'm saying is: it's still worth it. |

Punters pay to use any ride, they pay for entry, for toilets and cash machines, and for every item you price in every shop. That's as close as it gets to micromanagement, unless you count finely tuning the position of every rock, shrub, and decorative roof panel. It's more Planet Coaster than the cynical money grubbing of Theme Park, so if you're here for rollercoasters that do stunt jumps over canyons, it's mostly good news. |

If you like old Sonic games, there's no doubt in my mind you'll love it. If you don't, there's no doubt in my mind you'll think it's agony. |

Valve announced the desktop update back in April, where the new version has been in beta for some Steam users to try out. In Valve's post from yesterday announcing the update is available for all, it did note that the "most impactful changes in this update aren't immediately visible," as a lot of the work put into the update was today with how it "[shares] code across the Steam Desktop Client, Big Picture mode, and Steam Deck." According to Valve, these changes should mean that future features should be more quickly implemented and iterated upon. |

Good Smile Company shared details about the Diablo III Demon Hunter. It will cost ¥7,900 in Japan. Through the US Good Smile Company online store, it is $53.99. It will show up in Japan in October 2023 and North America in Q4 2023. In terms of accessories, the Demon Hunter doesn't come with too many extras compared to other Nendoroids. While many include three face plates, it features two. One has a stoic expression, while the other is a shouting one. The character comes with two crossbows to equip. There are also some effect parts to make it look like multiple arrows are being shot at once. Here's a closer look at the Diablo III Demon Hunter Nendoroid with its accessories and a few example poses. This isn't the only western game character with a Nendoroid on the way. Good Smile Company also opened pre-orders and announced release windows for its Halo Infinite Master Chief Nendoroid. A special "stealth" version is available through Microsoft. Kotobukiya has announced that pre-orders for new The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie figures of Rean Schwarzer and Altina Orion are now open. The Rean figure costs 19,800 JPY (or roughly $140) and is expected to release on November 2023 in Japan. The director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio explained the meaning of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth's Western name. In a message on Twitter, Masayoshi Yokoyama went over the difference between the Japanese and English titles. He also confirmed that it is the eighth main game in the series. The game will be called Ryu ga Gotoku 8 in Japan, continuing the numbering system of the series. However, the name change to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in the West was due to new fans coming to the series through the previous main game, Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The subtitle, Infinite Wealth, is directly tied to themes within the game. However, Yokoyama kept quiet about what that means for now. He also pointed out the infinity symbol also appeared in the game's teaser trailer in 2022. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth was recently shown off in a new trailer at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase. It featured protagonist Kasuga Ichiban washing up naked on a beach in Hawaii and alarming other beachgoers. NetEase revealed a new key visual featuring the silhouettes for the Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony characters that will appear as costumes for the new crossover event with mobile game Identity V. The tweet posted by the Identity V official Twitter account features silhouettes belonging to Kaede Akamatsu, Shuichi Saihara, Miu Iruma, Kokichi Oma, and Rantaro Amami. Standing next to the statue of studio mascot Ludens, Cage can also be seen writing a message to Kojima and the studio team thanking them for the tour. There's a chance to see a bit more of the Persona 3 Reload remake due to a trailer that aired during a commercial break in Japan. Atlus announced that on June 15, 2023, it would air a new ad for the game once during a certain time block. The goal was to celebrate the announcement. While it did include some footage from the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 trailer, it also appears to show some new gameplay from the upcoming remake. This commercial isn't available on the AtlusTube Japanese YouTube channel. However, Faz uploaded the full trailer online, so we can see the new Persona 3 Reload commercial worldwide. As a reminder, this isn't a remake of FES or Persona 3 Portable. This means the female avatar option and The Answer portion of the game will be absent, though some things from FES will be included apparently. Persona 3 Reload is in development for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam. There's no release date yet. However, Atlus noted we can expect it sometime in early 2024. Metaphor: ReFantazio won't be an Xbox-exclusive game, as Sega Korea just confirmed PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. During the Xbox Games Showcase 2023 on June 11, 2023, Project Re Fantasy reappeared. However, Atlus only confirmed Xbox Series X and Windows PC in that reveal trailer. This latest announcement added a trailer with an additional row of platforms. That confirmed the two Sony consoles, as well as a Steam release for PCs. [Thanks, Gematsu!] Here's the Sega Korea confirmation of the Metaphor: ReFantazio PS4 and PS5 versions. For those unaware, Sega owns Atlus, explaining why it would be handling such an announcement for the region. It also confirmed team members we were already aware of. That is, Katsura Hashino is the game's director, Shigenori Soejima is the character artist, and Shoji Meguro composed its soundtrack. The trailer itself is identical to the Xbox Games Showcase one, albeit with the different panel at the end revealing platforms.

It seems another classic Star Ocean game could return. The official Square Enix Support Center page shared, then removed, a logo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This only appeared briefly on June 15, 2023. No remake has been officially announced yet. [Thanks, RPGSite!] As a reminder, ahead of this Star Ocean: The Second Story R leak, the game's appeared on a number of platforms. It first showed up on the PlayStation in Japan in 1998, with worldwide releases following. A Second Evolution PSP version in 2008 in Japan and 2009 worldwide. That version also eventually appeared on the PS3, PS4, and Vita in Japan. This installment involved two storylines. People could follow either Claude, the son of Ronyx from the previous game, as he crash lands on a new planet called Expel or Rena, a woman from the planet. In each case, the party gets caught up in a world-spanning adventure to save the world. We already saw one Star Ocean remake, though that was a few years ago. Square Enix released Star Ocean: First Departure R worldwide on the PS4 and Switch in 2019. That retold the story of Ronyx and Ilia as they encounter people like Roddick and Millie on the planet Roak to make a vaccine for a disease spreading on the planet that came from a person named Asmodeus in the past. We could see Star Ocean: The Second Story R in the future. The game appeared on the PlayStation and PSP worldwide, then on the PS3, PS4, and Vita in Japan. On June 15, 2023, Grasshopper Manufacture released its own Grasshopper Direct 2023, an 11 minutes long video celebrating the company's 25th anniversary. The video goes over games developed by the company, as well as teasing some of its future projects. Additionally, the company will hold an art exhibition in Japan, and a new Grasshopper online store was announced. The store will offer Grasshopper themed t-shirts, including 25 anniversary ones, and it will allow for overseas shipping in the future. Ahead of its debut, Siliconera got to talk to Gust Executive Officer Junzo Hosoi about the development of this installment, its new quality of life features, and the chances of us seeing games like Atelier Elie and Atelier Lilie returning too. Jenni Lada: When did work on remaking Atelier Marie begin? Junzo Hosoi: We began development in 2021. What sorts of quality of life adjustments did Gust consider when preparing Atelier Marie Remake? Which one do you think is most helpful? Junzo Hosoi: We thought it was essential to add an in-game tutorial and an intermediate goal of "Professor Ingrid's Task" to guide the gameplay so that new or current game players can smoothly enter the game. "Professor Ingrid's Task" clearly states the minimum goal to clear so that even newcomers can play without hesitation. How much did the actual game itself change between the original and the remake in terms of both gameplay and its story? Did this mean additional script adjustments or mission rebalancing? Junzo Hosoi: The biggest change in gameplay is that you can now obtain items of your choice by gathering. At the same time, we have adjusted the balance of requests, battles, and number of days for synthesis. As for the storyline, additional events to interact with the characters you can hire, as well as events in which the teachers evaluate Marie's performance have been added. There are few changes to the original storyline. Junzo Hosoi: I think it is Atelier Sophie 2, which was released last year, and Atelier Ryza 3, which came out this year. In order to bring Atelier Marie up to a quality suitable for the present day, the knowledge we have gained from these two works has been utilized in this one as well. What led to the implementation of the Professor Ingrid's Tasks feature in Atelier Marie Remake and how does it work? Junzo Hosoi: As the original version of the game had limited in-game instructions, some first-time players may be unsure of what to do. The idea was to make it easier to play by presenting short-term goals for such players. By having Professor Ingrid give you a task every six months, it is easier to know what you need to do next, and it makes it easier to play toward the ending. In Ultimate Mode, the deadline for these tasks can be ignored, making it easier to play for people who are not comfortable with the deadline system. There are all new 3D character models for the Atelier Marie Remake. How did the original designs influence their new looks? Junzo Hosoi: We created the characters to be cute in a modern style, while reproducing the character designs and pixel art features of the original work. How did the team prepare it for a digital release on multiple platforms? Junzo Hosoi: Since the foundation for multiple platforms has been laid with the past Atelier series, development and debugging for each platform was done pretty much simultaneously. Junzo Hosoi: It is possible. One of our goals is to have the entire Atelier series, starting with Atelier Marie, available in the digital stores. Now that Ryza's story's been told and we'll meet Marie again, what would you like to do next with Atelier games?
