It is, she points out, understandable why the sanitised Bethesda of today would leave well enough alone: "2002's Elder Scrolls game is an overambitious, odd, scrappy, and spiky beast. It is a game happy to leave you lost, confused, misunderstanding, weirded-out, frustrated, and stuck." Yet, Morrowind is loved! And in the comments of that article Nic Rueben mentioned the demo for Ardenfall, an RPG with no release date but a Steam demo. So off I toddled to have a look, and though I haven't played much of it yet, I'm confident in saying that if you liked Morrowind you should check the demo out. |

With development being led by former Irrational Games co-founder Robert Fermier and Age Of Empires II lead designer Ian M Fischer, Millennia will see you attempting that classic quad of Xs across ten distinct historical ages, starting in the Stone Age before eventually ending up in a "post-modern future", designer Ben Friedman tells me. The twist here, however, is that you've also got what C-Prompt are calling 'Variant Ages', which let you bend the timeline to your will. Some of these variants are more historical in nature, such as an Age Of Monuments where everyone's building Egyptian pyramids, Friedman explains, while others are more fantastical, with the words steampunk, alchemy and space alien invasions all mentioned in the same sentence. I had a good time with it during my demo, but the real delight was seeing my home army of Kyoto go and invade neighbouring settlement Telford, before going on to conquer Rome - as you do. And also, very relieved. Released in 2020, the original Cyberpunk 2077 stands as an uncommonly thunderous example of overhype and project mismanagement, with technical issues at launch that extended from comical bugs such as disappearing penises to serious breaches such as graphical effects capable of triggering epileptic fits. CD Projekt have spent years attempting to address the underlying systemic and workplace issues and claw back some goodwill - hence, the general atmosphere on Xitter of developers needing to take five and stare at a flowerbed for a while. "It was a rough few years but there's finally celebration and closure (for me at least)," posted senior level designer Seb Mcbride. In RockPaperShotgun's own Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty review, Graham summed it up as "perhaps the best expansion ever made", which has gone down a treat with the developers. "Is it? It's called Spectra, and it's set in the US in an alt-history 1972 where Soviet Union is the dominant military power after President Roosevelt was deposed in a fascist coup. You play as a Soviet agent tasked with infiltrating and fomenting revolution in a fortress city called Hiwatha. Tucci wants Spectra to meet the criteria players will expect from an immersive sim. "To me, the immersive sim is the platonic ideal of the video game" she says. "I've tried to deliver on that immersion by creating an environment that is extremely interactable and flexible in the ways it can be used." She explains that "a quite frankly silly proportion of the buildings in each map are enterable and that "you can turn off the lights, set traps, and use things like televisions, radios, or payphones as lures." It sounds like everything immersive sim fans want. But there's one big difference between Spectra and the games that inspired it. Tucci is making it on her own. And she isn't the only indie developer working in one of the most ambitious, developmentally complex genres in the industry. In my experience, at least, most RPGs only give you the build-up to a character romance, then flash-freeze the relationship post-consummation, perhaps because you've unlocked a sexy "loyalty" companion ability and the developers don't want to take it away from you. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the few that thinks about how chemistry might come and go. |

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Producer Yoshinori Kitase, along with Directors Tetsuya Nomura and Naoki Hamaguchi, recently revealed some details about the upcoming game in an interview with Game Spark. Part of it went over how existing elements from the game will be recreated in this remake. In particular, we learned more about what the date event at the Gold Saucer might look like in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as well as who we may see as options to take on a date. [Thanks, Game Spark!] Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that the date event that takes place at the Gold Saucer in the original story will be present in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. He referred to it is one of the most anticipated story events from fans of the original game. As in the original game, the date partner the protagonist Cloud chooses will change depending on the player's choices. Hamaguchi offered the following comment about the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Gold Saucer date to Game Spark:
As a reminder, the original game offered Aerith, Barret, Tifa, and Yuffie as date options. Hamaguchi also mentioned that there would be more mechanics in place in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to make the date itself more exciting than the original. We already had an Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes release date thanks to the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, but now there's new gameplay footage too. Pre-orders are also open, with the official social media account revealing what's in the Digital Deluxe Edition of Eiyuden Chronicle.
First, here's the Eiyuden Chronicle gameplay and pre-order trailer. First, it offers an idea of the environments you'll see. It also mentions how influential the rune-lenses are on the world. After that, it introduces the three heroes Nowa, Seign, and Marisa, who act as the games' leads. After they're introduced, we see some story segments with other characters. Peeks at the fishing minigame also appear. After that, we get to see some of the various party members in battle. For the second half of the trailer, we see more footage while the Sarah Alainn theme song "Flags of Brave" plays.
The English voice actors for all three of the main characters were also revealed. Here's who's playing all the characters.
As for the Digital Deluxe Edition, it comes with five extra items along with the game. You get the Season Pass for all the DLC. There's a Headquarters Custom Object that lets you place and R&B Statue. The Easy Journey Pack gives people revival and recovery items. Finally, you get a digital soundtrack and art book.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on April 23, 2024.

The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki will appear outside Japan as Trails through Daybreak. NIS America and Nihon Falcom revealed it will bring the RPG to the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC. We already saw the game appear on the PS4, PS5, and PC in Japan. It follows the events of both Trails of Cold Steel 4 and Trails into Reverie. It will appear in Summer 2024.
In this newest The Legend of Heroes games, we'll head to a whole new region. This time, we'll follow ARKRIDE Solutions Office Spriggan Van Arkride. He's basically is a mercenary of sorts who can fight or investigate issues in Calvard. The story begins when a young woman named Agnes heads to Van to get his help on a new "case."
This entry also features a morality system. As you play, you'll be able to make decisions that shift the scales from lawful to neutral and chaotic. This determines the course of the story.

NIS America and Nihon Falcom announced that the companies will bring both The Legend of Zelda: Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4 to the PS5. Both games will appear on the console outside Japan in early 2024. However, there's no exact release date for either one of them yet. This comes after "Teen" ESRB ratings for both games appeared online at the beginning of September 2023.
The initial announcement for the RPGs included some details about the games. For example, both will offer English and Japanese audio and English subtitles. Trails of Cold Steel 3 will also offer French as a subtitle option. These will be HD versions of both RPG. Also, they will include the cosmetic add-ons for characters.

As a reminder, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4 begins after a timeskip from Trails of Cold Steel 2. Rean is the new Thors Military Academy's Branch Campus instructor teaching Class VII, which now consists of Altina, Ash, Juna, Kurt, and Musse.

During the Tokyo Game Show 2023 Capcom Online Special Program, a new trailer and release date appeared for the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. The trilogy collection official website is open as well. Earlier in June 2023, Capcom announced that the game would be scheduled to release in early 2024. Now we know the exact date it will be released: January 25, 2024. Digital pre-orders will begin in Fall 2023. The collection will include HD ports of all three Apollo Justice courtroom battle games. Those include Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, which was originally on the Nintendo DS, and Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, which were both on the Nintendo 3DS. The trilogy collection will include some new bonus features. First, players can swap out the outfits of the playable characters. Some of the outfits included were originally only available as DLC. During the TGS 2023 Capcom Online Program, the company shared a Monster Hunter 20th anniversary piece of art that seemed to show a new hunter. The image showed an array of hunters from past entries throughout the series. It also included the new logo for the anniversary in the upper right corner.
Here's a closer look at the new art. The new hunter is at the far left. It seems like it could be hinting at a remake of the original Monster Hunter game or Monster Hunter Freedom.
The first Monster Hunter game appeared on the PS2 back on March 11, 2004. Following its Japanese debut, it eventually showed up worldwide. Later, a version of its Monster Hunter G version showed up on the PSP as Monster Hunter Freedom. That entry also ended up showing up on the Wii in Japan in 2009. Since then, multiple mainline entries and spin-offs appeared. The latest major release was Monster Hunter Rise for the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. However, in September 2023 Capcom and Niantic released the mobile spin-off Monster Hunter Now.
The Monster Hunter 20th anniversary will be celebrated in March 2024. There will be more news about what to expect from it as the date approaches.

A new Dragon's Dogma 2 trailer appeared during the Capcom Online Program broadcasted during TGS 2023. The new trailer introduced the two nations that will appear in the game. These are the human kingdom of Vermund and Battahl, land of beastren. Additionally, two new advanced Magick vocations were revealed: The Mystic Spearhand and Magick Archer. Oxcarts will also serve as a means of fast travel.
In Vermund, those Arisen that have managed to slay the Dragon have ruled for generations. Vermund is green and lush, and has plenty of caves, valleys, and hills to explore. Meanwhile, Battahl is a canyon nation with a city built upon ancient ruins. The environments and monsters featured in Battahl will be drastically different to those of Vermund.
The Mystic Spearhand vocation combines magick attacsk and weapon-based physical attacks. It introduces dual spears as a new weapon type never before seen in the Dragon's Dogma series. The Magick Archer is a range vocation with a heavy emphasis on ranged attacks, and it mixes archery skills with powerful magick arrows.

Oxcarts allow players to fast travel. Time will naturally pass with each trip. Additionally, players will have the option to close their eyes during the trip, instantly transporting them to their final location, or let the ride continue for its full duration.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is currently in development, and it will appear on the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

The characters in Octopath Traveler 2 will venture to new platforms in 2024, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions confirmed. Square Enix made the announcement at TGS 2023. In addition, the already available PC version will also show up on the Microsoft Store at that time. This means it will be available on all major platforms next year.
As a reminder, Octopath Traveler 2 appeared on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC in February 2023. It features eight playable characters with their own storylines. New to this installment are some storylines that involve two party members working together through an adventure once you've recruited them both. All characters have jobs tied to them, and you can mix and match to set up an ideal party for your needs. There are also some additional jobs you can happen upon as you travel through the world.
To go along with the new reveal, Square Enix shared another trailer for the RPG. It shows both story segments and its turn-based battle system.
Octopath Traveler 2 Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions will appear sometime in 2024. That's also when the PC version will be on the Microsoft Store. The Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam versions are all already available.

Hidetaka "Swery65" Suehiro and Goichi "Suda51" Suda finally revealed their collaborative game Hotel Barcelona with an official trailer at the Xbox TGS 2023 Digital Broadcast. The new game co-developed by Swery65's White Owls and Suda51's Grasshopper Manufacture will be available in 2024.
The trailer described Hotel Barcelona as a 2.5D slasher film parodic action game. The game will task the player to defeat serial killers from all around the U.S. who have gathered at the eponymous location. In the broadcast, Swery65 and Suda51 revealed that the Overlook Hotel from The Shining and a secluded hotel where the two stayed during an event in Banff, Canada served as inspirations for this game's location.
The reveal trailer for Hotel Barcelona is available formally on the Xbox YouTube channel with English voiceovers. The game will also include a Japanese voice option.
Swery65 and Suda51 first revealed the collaboration project in 2019. Devolver Digital and Siren creator Keiichiro Toyama also showed interest in joining the project. When the reveal trailer for the game showed up at TGS 2023, the logo of Swery65's company White Owls appeared as the primary creator.
Hotel Barcelona will be released for Xbox Series X and S in 2024.

The first day of Tokyo Game Show 2023 featured an announcement event for Japan Game Awards 2023. Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak won the most prestigious Grand Award.
The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association narrowed down the top eleven titles from a list of popular games that were released in Japan from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak was included in the list and thus also won an Award for Excellence. The association ultimately decided that Sunbreak deserved to win the highest Grand Award out of the eleven titles.
A special panel of judges, which was led by Masahiro Sakurai and included Yoko Taro and Hideki Kamiya, deliberated separately for the Game Designers Award. The group gave this award to RPG Time: The Legend of Wright.
The presentation also included an award from Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry. While the minister usually gave this award to individual or group developers, the 2023 award went to Family Computer (a.k.a. Nintendo Entertainment System) for its contribution to the growth of Japan's gaming industry. The console is also celebrating its 40th anniversary since Nintendo launched it in Japan in 1983.

Sunbreak's victory also marked Capcom's success in achieving Grand Awards for both a base game and its expansion. The base Monster Hunter Rise shared the Grand Award with Ghost of Tsushima in 2021. The company repeated this feat after Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite won back-to-back Grand Awards in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
In the 2022 edition, FromSoftware's Elden Ring won the Grand Award. The game's director Hidetaka Miyazaki also received an award from the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game annual special sets frequently target nostalgia. Evolutions! Celebrations! But more than any expansion before it, Scarlet & Violet 151 builds around the franchise's long-time motto: "gotta catch 'em all."
Featuring the original Kanto creatures and with set order matching Pokedex order, 151 is a set built to be stored in binders. Rather than a smattering of different types and regional forms, the expansion presents each in their proper context and iconic form. This is a set that knows its audience. And isn't afraid to hit it hard in the wallet! Like other special expansions, it's unavailable in individual booster packs and more commonly found in curated boxes with promotional cards and such. (Still, there are "booster bundle" packs and Elite Trainer Box releases, for those looking to buy in more bulk.)
The inclusion of the full Kanto Pokedex means the return of Kadabra. Gone from the TCG for two decades after some legal entanglements with magician Uri Geller, the Scarlet & Violet 151 appearance isn't something The Pokemon Company is particularly touting, but it's notable for long-time collectors. It also means we'll probably see more of fan-favorite Alakazam in future sets. It has made an appearance every time the card game had another "this is a Basic no matter what" concept, like EX or Radiant or V, so we'd bet printing it more often is in the company's plans.
Adding to the nostalgia of Scarlet & Violet 151 is the use of "galaxy" foil for the Pokemon TCG set's energy cards. Old-heads like us may remember this holographic treatment from its earliest days, and filling decks with that design might tempt some. (And along the way, maybe they'll open some Eeveelutions or a particularly hungry Snorlax.) We don't know this for sure, but it feels like these foil energy might be in higher quantities than usual? Fingers crossed; it'd be helpful if they are.
Unsurprisingly, The 151 set includes a truly stellar #151, Mew ex. Its Restart ability is a great bench staple, letting you draw up to three each turn. The Genome Hacking attack lets you use any move the opponent's active creature has, which ain't a slouch either. It is, of course, exceedingly rare, though! Even with full-art and gold variants in the set. The Ultra-Premium Collection does include an Illustrator Rare version of the card? At about $120, it's as expensive as it sounds, but it also might be the cheapest way to get one. Just thinking about it does make us start trying to rationalize that "it isn't that good, actually."
Past the Pokedex numbers, we do get a few interesting Trainer cards. It's the first appearance of Daisy, your rival's older sister, who appropriately gets a Town Map-like ability to look at your Prize cards. Bill's Transfer lets you access your deck's Pokemon. Erika's Invitation lets you pull a Pokemon from an opponent's hand directly to the active spot for a pummeling. And yep, Giovanni's here too.
It's a weird set to talk about, honestly! We feel like you probably know if you're interested in Scarlet & Violet 151 by the time you've finished reading the name, and what's intriguing here is often the most obvious-in-retrospect sort of treatment for a species or character. But there are absolutely ways to have messed this set up, so it's nice to see it come together nicely.

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for the Cult of the Lamb Nendoroid. The figure will appear in May 2024 in Japan and Q4 2024 worldwide. The figure costs ¥6,500 in Japan and $41.99 from the US storefront. As expected, items from the game like the crown and poop appear. There is also a bonus stand with the game's logo if someone purchases the item from the official Good Smile Company storefronts. We last saw the figure at Anime Expo 2023, though it was only an unpainted prototype at the time. However, a painted version of the Cult of the Lamb Nendoroid is available to view.
The Lamb arrives wearing the cape and hat seen throughout the game. Both of these can be removed for poses. There are three face plates included. One features the character smiling. In another, the character's eyes are bloody as though it is performing a ritual. You can equip the Lamb with a broom or a sword, and there is a piece of poop for them to sweep up.
