PCGamesN Wednesday, November 1, 2023 2:36 PM What are the best retro games on PC? The gaming industry has come a long way over the last decade or two, but sometimes it's soothing to go back to the basics. Games-as-a-service titles like Fortnite and Overwatch have set the benchmark over the last few years by adding new content and cosmetics over an annual plan - something that has been adapted or originated by plenty of other studios, too. It's not all sunshine, battle passes, and dabbing, though. There's still space for games in the modern day that buck these trends by putting on a pair of rose-tinted pair specs, from Doom-like FPS games shooters to love letters to the early days of the World Wide Web. These retro games are, believe it or not, new, but bring back fond memories of the past. If you're after the real deal instead, don't worry, we've got you covered with a list of our favorite old games, too. Of course, there is much more to the best horror games than jump scares and gore. So while we have included a few obvious picks like some of the best PC games, Outlast and Amnesia, you can also expect to find games that use different tactics to raise your heartbeat and get your palms sweating, whether that's a dread-inducing atmosphere and careful pacing, or unpredictable multiplayer antics like you'll find in Phasmophobia. PCGamesN Wednesday, November 1, 2023 1:24 PM What is The Day Before release date? When its first trailer dropped back in 2021, The Day Before blew people away with its gritty open-world set in the United States following a deadly pandemic. A survival MMO, the game will see players exploring the world, scavenging for resources in the abandoned metropolis of New York City and the lush countryside outside it, all while taking down (or hiding from) infected, zombie-like enemies, and other players alike. The Day Before was then met with a series of delays due to claims of copyright infringement and faked footage, leading some to believe the game was a scam all along. We're assured that the zombie game is still on its way, so here's what we know about the post-apocalyptic MMORPG game - and if The Day Before release date brings gameplay remotely like we saw in that original trailer footage, it could join our list as one of the best PC games this year. Since Palia hasn't been out all that long, and the MMO made its Epic Games Store debut, there aren't a ton of mods out there right now, but as we expected, the ones you can find are those that are helpful in navigation or make Palia's already vivid art style look more colorful than ever before. I have not, thank goodness, reached the stage where my psyche's split in two (yet), but this spiral of self-doubt has now got to the point where I simply have put words, any words, in front of one another to write my way out of this hellish pit of despair. Alan himself goes through a similar ordeal of writing to escape as he tries to find a way out of the prison-like dimension known as The Dark Place, where he's been trapped since the events of the first game - and I take heart from the fact that it's clearly well-worn territory for the folks at Remedy as well, such is the forensic precision in the way it's portrayed onscreen: a chaotic, supernatural tornado that not only threatens to unravel Alan's own identity, but also the wider world as we know it. It's imposter syndrome writ large, and honestly, Remedy are pretty on the money with this one. Horace is not a pretty taskmaster when the words stop coming. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 1, 2023 12:00 PM Thirsty Suitors is a dazzling new entry in a genre that is always badly in need of bolstering: turn-based RPGs without anime aesthetics and a story about something other than killing God. The game sees you play as Jala, who returns to her dilapidated hometown after getting dumped by the older woman for whom she abandoned college and her high school sweetheart. Waiting for her is a disappointed mother, a soon-to-be-wed sister who refuses to even speak to her, and a shadowy cabal formed of her spurned exes from the time in her life when rampant, unrelenting teen horniness nearly ripped the town apart. Jala's journey to redemption and genuine adulthood will take her to the psychic plane to do cathartic (if overly simplistic) battle with her wronged exes, to the local skatepark to pull off some janky grinds, and to grounded emotional revelations that are rarely written this well in videogames. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 1, 2023 9:00 AM Beware major plot spoilers for the entire Amnesia series, together with descriptions of fictional torturing techniques. The most ghoulish of Amnesia's many ghoulish ideas is "vitae". It's a luminous, blue-green fluid that can be used as an energy source, a chemical catalyst and a supernatural healing agent. Each Amnesia game is broadly a story about the production of vitae, with some levels consisting of huge distillation and refining apparata, and major plot developments tied to what you do with it. In the original Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you'll brew potions using vitae in order to keep a decapitated head alive. In 2020's Amnesia: Rebirth, you'll use ornate metal cannisters of the stuff like batteries to power otherworldly machines. Vitae is the blood and breath of Amnesia, the grease upon the narrative axels, the fuel in its boiler, the miracle McGuffin that sustains its nastier flights of fantasy. But what is vitae, exactly? Agony. |

The official Shonen Jump YouTube channel shared an hour long music video featuring Himiko Toga and Ochaco Uraraka from the My Hero Academia manga and anime series. The video is a "what if?" scenario showing both characters growing up together as childhood friends.
The video shows four scenes featuring Ochaco and Himiko spending time together. The scenes are rendered and animated in a pixel art style, accompanied by piano music, with corresponding sound effects playing in the background.
You can take a look at the My Hero Academia Ochaco Uraraka and Himiko Toga pixel art video here:
The first scene includes both characters as children playing in a park during Spring. The second scene continues into Summer and involves the characters playing with a cat and picking flowers near a shrine. The third scene changes things to show the characters grown into middle school students, taking cute pictures together at a purikura photo booth.
The final scene shows Ochaco and Himiko grown into high schoolers, spending time during winter in the park from the first scene. At certain points in the video, a memory of them as children will appear where they were playing during the same scene. In addition, snow starts falling near the end of the fourth scene.
The My Hero Academia anime series is available on Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the localization of the manga outside of Japan.

A sequel to Neowiz Games' Lies of P was confirmed in a video from director Ji Won Choi, along with plans for an upcoming balance patch, sequel, and DLC. While no specific dates were confirmed, the balance update is said to be planned for November, 2023, and will arrive along with several in-game gifts from the developers.
In the video, Choi stated that the development team's main priorities are working on both the Lies of P DLC and sequel. Though no concrete details were revealed, Choi did show two pieces of teaser art for the DLC towards the end of the video. One of the two features what appears to be a large water turbine, while the other shows Pinocchio exploring two crashed sailing ships.
You can see the pieces in the gallery below:
For the balance path, Neowiz plans to update several areas in response to player feedback. The first listed is the tweaking of several blades and handles that were "underperforming" as part of the Weapon Assemble system. Choi also addressed concerns over the initial difficulty of the game, in particular an enemy located in the Venigni Works that was able to stunlock players who had not unlocked a certain skill. To combat these frustrations, the developers are planning to have the Rising Dodge ability unlocked from the start instead of later on, allowing players to roll out of a knocked-down state, as well as adding two more skill-unlocking items to an early vendor's inventory.
Choi also described plans to provide players with several in-game gifts to express the gratitude of him and the team. These gifts include a wearable outfit resembling special weapon merchant Alidoro's, which was apparantly hotly requested, as well as a hat and pair of glasses to use with the new facial accessory slot. The slot will allow players to wear both hats and accessories where before they were limited to one or the other.
You can watch the full Director's Letter below:

I still can be wary about Persona and Shin Megami Tensei spin-offs. Persona 5 Tactica is a cover-focused, turn-based strategy game not unlike XCOM and Mario + Rabbids and, in my first hours with it on the Switch, I found the gameplay paired well with the series concepts.
Persona 5 Tactica begins with a bit of mystery. The Phantom Thieves are gathering at LeBlanc after the events of the main game, socializing and escaping inclement weather. While there, they see news about Diet member Kasukabe disappearing. Not long after they do, something happens, causing weird imagery to appear at the door. The group ventures out, finding themselves transformed into their Phantom Thief attire when they do. It's then that they also encounter a dreaded figure known as Marie and her minions, and eventually need to fall back alongside resistance member Erina to regroup and better prepare to retaliate.
Basically, from what I saw in my first missions, you want to get the Phantom Thieves into cover while also evicting opponents from their secure spaces in Persona 5 Tactica. Sometimes, you may even find spots that offer a degree of recovery while standing there. But for the most part, you want to position your party members behind "large" pieces of cover, rather than waist-high ones, to ensure a complete block from damage. At the same time, you want to use Persona skills like Morgana's Zorro's Garu or less risky melee attacks to knock enemies out of their safe spots. (In the case of a well-times and arranged physical attack, your unit will then occupy that foe's former spot and immediately be in cover after the attack.)
Aside from the aforementioned Persona skills and ability to use guns for ranged attacks, other sorts of Persona series staples exist. If you manage to knock down an enemy with the strength of an attack or defeat it, then that character gets to take action one more time. It's incredibly handy and, even in the early missions I played, encouraged smart gameplay. The Triple Threat mechanic, which sees someone knocking down an enemy, then positioning two other allies in a triangle surrounding them to deal AOE damage to all foes within those lines, is also an "All Out Attack" sort of major assault that could easily deal significant damage and help clear out enemies. Not to mention I found it often helped with getting through the three Awards challenges that might involve getting through a stage in X number of turns.
At times between these missions, players get a chance to retreat to Erina's resistance's headquarters. There, they can invest in the different character's skill trees to unlock active and passive abilities, talk to the people there, visit the Velvet Room to manage Personas, buy new guns, and go through replays. I found it a handy break between major missions. Though I also did find it a relief to know that I could save at the start of a fight and there was an autosave option so progress never ended up being lost.
All of these early hours of Persona 5 Tactica left me feeling rather optimistic about the adventure. The gameplay seems solid enough, with some opportunities to strategically find a safe spot while also ensuring there was no security for opponents. I'm curious to see how it shapes up as I get further into it, replay some fights, and get more into fusions.
Persona 5 Tactica will appear on the Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam on November 17, 2023. There will also be Repaint Your Heart DLC with Goro Akechi and Kasumi Yoshizawa released on launch day.

Bandai Namco released the Tales of Arise Beyond the Dawn DLC theme song, "We Still." It may sound a little familiar as it is performed by Kankaku Piero, the same group that performed the original game's track "Hibana."
To go along with the release, there's a music video to watch. Bandai Namco shared the full version of Kankaku Piero's "We Still" on top of footage from the game and its expansion. People can see both the existing cast members reuniting and experiencing important moments, while also seeing the new character Nazamil. During the event scenes, we see Nazamil meeting and connecting with the party, as well as people like Alphen, Shionne, and Rinwell using their abilities to attack.
There will be a way to hear the Tales of Arise Beyond the Dawn DLC theme song outside of the game. Bandai Namco confirmed it will be streaming online starting on November 9, 2023. It didn't note which services will offer it. However, Bandai Namco did recently release the Armored Core 6 soundtrack on Spotify, Amazon, and Apple Music, so those could be contenders.
Tales of Arise is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Before the Dawn DLC will arrive on November 9, 2023.

Arc System Works' latest update for Guilty Gear Strive revealed Bridget ended up most popular character worldwide in the Season 3 Survey. The team also went over the upcoming roadmap for updates for the game.
The Season 3 Survey happened in September 2023, with over 37,000 offering thoughts on Guilty Gear Strive, the most popular character, and the person people most want to see as DLC. Worldwide, Bridget came in first, followed by Sol in second, Ramlethal in third, Baiken in fourth, and Ky Kiske in fifth. As for characters who people most want to see return as a playable character, A.B.A. topped the list in North America, South America, and Africa, Elphelt Valentine was first in Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, and Slayer is most wanted in Europe and the Middle East.
The popularity of Bridget in Guilty Gear Strive seems to have influenced merchandise for the series as of late. In September and October 2023, we saw shirts based on her, Dizzy, and Ramlethal, her outfit in VRChat, and a variant of her Pop Up Parade figure.
The Developer's Backyard also confirmed some other upcoming additions. In Season 3, the 15 launch characters are getting new attacks, and Anji, Faust, Giovanna, May, I-No, and Ramlethal already "learned" theirs. The Wild Assault and Deflect Shield mechanics are new. There will also be new DLC characters in December 2023, followed by additional ones and stages in 2024.

Although WarioWare: Move It is one of the strangest gaming experiences I've had in a long time, its addicting gameplay also made it one of the most enjoyable games I've played all year.
Originally launching on the GameBoy Advance over two decades ago, the minigame franchise returns for its twelfth major title on the Nintendo Switch. However, like 2006's WarioWare: Smooth Moves for the Nintendo Wii, WarioWare: Move It asks a lot from players as the game heavily leans on the motion controls of the Joy-Con controllers, which is sometimes to its detriment.
To get things out of the way, WarioWare: Move It requires players to detach their Joy-Cons from their system at all times to play the game. For those that run their console through their TV, this isn't a problem. However, this isn't exactly ideal for players who prefer the portability of the Nintendo Switch. If you fall into the latter category, you will have to get used to setting your tiny Switch screen down on a table or desk while playing the minigame collection. It's not the worst thing ever, but this could be a big caveat for some fans.
Additionally, WarioWare: Move It also has some rather unique requirements that players must fulfill to get through certain minigames in the collection. In the "Trust Tether Sign" pose, you must have the wristband cable attached to your Joy-Con. This is because the microgame has you dropping your Joy-Con in the air and dangling it. If you don't have the strap, you can theoretically get around this by dropping your controllers on a chair or couch. But from my experience, the game often doesn't register these movements correctly using this method, so you really need to have the accessory.
Once you get past those hurdles, WarioWare: Move It is an absolute blast! After winning an all-expenses paid trip to Caresaway Island, Wario begrudgingly invites all of his friends from previous games to a vacation resort. In many ways, WarioWare: Move It plays like a love letter to the niche franchise. Fans of the series will feel right at home as beloved characters such as Mona, Ashley, Crygor, and Penny are all here and incorporated into the story in a really neat way.
For its core gameplay loop, WarioWare: Move It has you navigating around the Caresaway Island map as you unlock new chapters in the story. However, each level is centered around a specific character's point of view as we get to see how they are spending their time at the vacation resort. In every chapter, you are thrown into a series of quick minigames that you must complete to reach the final Boss Stage.
For example, the first level has you taking on Wario, who is being chased through the jungle. As you watch the Nintendo mascot sprint for his life, the game quickly cuts to minigames that range from chopping carrots in a kitchen to playing whack-a-mole with a giant octopus. Because I am a clumsy person, I accidentally threw orange juice into a character's face instead of gently clinking their wine glass in one of the challenges. Oops! If you use up your lives and fail the game, no worries, as WarioWare: Move It! gives you an infinite amount of continues, as long as you are willing to swallow your pride and re-create a goofy "sacred pose" with your Joy-Cons.
Another stage had me joining Mona, who was on a Mermaid Meet and Greet adventure. In each level, the game introduces you to new poses you have to mimic with your Joy-Cons to progress the story. For Mona's segment, I had to hit a baseball, keep my character dry with an umbrella, and use a plunger to get a turtle out of a clogged toilet. Yes, the game gets weird quickly. In the opening stages alone, I had to "de-stock" a character by pulling the stretched garment off her face. Why? Who knows! But it's these bizarre moments that make WarioWare: Move It a joy to play. While it lacks the strategic elements of board games like Mario Party, its frantic and unexpected gameplay is constantly stimulating. I couldn't stop laughing when one of the challenges literally had me creating a Snowman with my butt. Yeah, don't ask.
WarioWare: Move It has two core modes: Story and Party. In Story Mode, you and another player move up and down Caresaway Island, tackling each level's minigame-filled story segment. The campaign can also be played solo. Party Mode, in comparison, gets straight to the action and is just a collection of minigames that up to 4 players can jump into. In this mode, you will not have to watch lengthy cutscenes or deal with the resort story.
While it's to be expected from the series by this point, I was surprised at how tired I got while playing WarioWare: Move It. The game lives up to its name, as it really expects you to use your entire body while utilizing your full surroundings. In one minigame, I almost fell down on the ground after bending backward so my on-screen character would fit under the game's limbo bar. Players with mobility issues may struggle with certain aspects of WarioWare: Move It!, as there are almost no compromises regarding the physical requirements of each minigame.
WarioWare: Move It is an absolute blast to play and is the perfect mix of chaotic gameplay and bizarre humor. However, the game's heavy reliance on motion controls and strict minigame requirements may be a dealbreaker for some players. Ultimately, Nintendo's decision to go all in on the Joy-Con mostly pays off as WarioWare: Move It has some of the series' most innovative and bizarre minigames to date. If you can get past the hurdles, this is one of the best party titles on the Nintendo Switch and is a perfect love letter to the long-running franchise.
WarioWare: Move It will appear on the Nintendo Switch on November 3, 2023.
