PCGamesN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 11:02 AM Intel has given a sneak preview of what its Application Optimization - or APO - can do for games when using a 14th gen CPU. However, it has triggered disappointment in some as it confirmed there are "no plans" to roll APO out to 12th or 13th gen chips. We looked at the results of what Intel APO can do for games when one round of testing done by Talon's Tech pushed Rainbow Six: Siege to over 1,100 fps. This was cause for excitement, given that many expected Intel to eventually roll this technology back as far as its 12th gen CPUs. PCGamesN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 11:13 AM The Corsair MP700 Pro provides a few upgrades versus the vanilla MP700, namely increases to sequential read and write speeds, as well as the inclusion of an optional heatsink. Both of these changes place the SSD among the speediest you can buy today, but it only really flexes its muscles during large file transfers rather than gaming. In terms of raw speed, the MP700 Pro is one of two drives that can lay claim to the title of best SSD, with the Crucial T700 serving as the only other option to provide the same specs. However, the MP700 Pro aims to maximize its performance through the application of an active cooling solution, giving it an edge if you don't mind an additional cable and a small amount of extra noise in your PC. PCGamesN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 8:03 AM How do you unlock the Remnant 2 Ritualist Scythe? The Forgotten Commune is likely the first side dungeon you explore in The Awakened King DLC, so the odds are high that you've picked up a quest item or two while defeating the optional bosses that lurk within. The Scythe Blade and Scythe Hilt seem like a natural fit – in fact, their item descriptions even hint that "if you can reunite them, you'll have a brutal new weapon to add to your collection." But how do you actually do that? Well, it's more straightforward than you might think – you don't even have to return to Ward 13. When reunited in the action-adventure game, these two quest items form the best melee weapon for the Remnant 2 Ritualist thanks to its unique Remnant 2 mod, which allows you to inflict more damage to enemies suffering from negative status effects. So, if you want to expand your Remnant 2 arsenal with weapons unique to the Remnant 2 Awakened King DLC, here's how to unlock the Ritualist Scythe. PCGamesN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 7:58 AM What are the Starfield console commands and cheats? We've all been guilty of it. PCGamesN Wednesday, November 15, 2023 7:38 AM What do you want from a videogame? As I look back across 2023, and all the big releases like Starfield, Diablo 4, and Baldur's Gate 3, it seems like exploration, freedom, and choice are the defining characteristics of today's popular PC hits. But there is another type of game - or rather, another approach to game-making - whereby your freedom might be limited in the literal sense, but the richness and depth of what you experience is just as great, or perhaps greater, than the most expansive RPG. Personally, I like shorter games where every single moment feels written, pored over, and choreographed. You might have played Amnesia The Bunker, or other entries in the superlative horror game series. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 15, 2023 1:14 PM It's a good time to be a strategy game developer, according to Oxide Games, developers of Ara: History Untold, which happens to be a strategy game. Speaking to me during a showing of Ara - which is notable among turn-based 4X games for playing out every player's turn simultaneously - the creators offered a rousing characterisation of the genre, suggesting that strategy games have somewhat shucked off their association with stifling complexity and elitism, thanks not least to the recent influence of board gaming. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 15, 2023 12:49 PM If you haven't heard by now, Metal Gear Solid's Master Collection - which includes the first proper outing for MGS3: Snake Eater on PC - is a bit of a mess. Lacking graphics options, suffering from visual limitations and crashes, and generally barebones as a package, the catalogue of the first three Metal Gear Solid titles and their two Metal Gear prequels hasn't exactly gone down well with players. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 15, 2023 11:43 AM Naheulbeuk's Dungeon Master is a staff management game disguised as a dungeon management game. At the start of each week, your minions might choose to go on strike, demanding everything from more cells in the prison to fewer dwarves in the workplace. If that second example elicited a startled little "yikes", then good, you're paying attention. Your minions are also occasional racists – which at least makes some of the more brutal options at hand for dealing with striking workers more palatable. You can sacrifice the entire picket line to your in-house demon lord, or terminate their employment without tribunal. You can also lock them up in those prisons they repeatedly claim are so lacking in cells. Or you can agree to their terms to expand the canteen and sack all of their shortest colleagues. But no matter which option you choose, minion strikes are inconsequential, only ever amounting to a comedy aside. Just as the turn-based Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk set out to skewer D&D, Naheulbeuk's Dungeon Master is a brave and self-aware parody of dungeon management games. But it's far too barebones to invest in seriously. |

Following in the wake of Microsoft, Epic, CD Projekt, Sony and, well, take your pick, the company aim to cut roughly 30% of their workforce to shore up profits. The specific reasoning here is that Digital Bros think that people aren't interested in playing original new games; they'd rather get to grips with fictions and franchises they know and love already. As such, the company plan to "limit" their big budget projects in future, though no specific cancellations have been announced. |

Enter the best early Black Friday graphics cards deals, offering up some rare opportunities to upgrade your PC's most gaming-focused component without the usual financial devastation. I'm exaggerating – for effect! – but there genuinely are some chunky savings to be had here, even on the very latest graphics cards with enhanced ray tracing and DLSS 3 support. It's not just super-duper-high-end cards like the RTX 4080 that are getting cuts, either – the early deals I've found so far cover more affordable and/or mid-range far as well, like the Intel Arc A750 and RTX 4060 Ti. There are already many mods for the venerable fantasy RPG, of course - the options range from mods that give you Henry Cavill's face to mods that simulate the effects of long Covid to raise awareness - but the editor should make life easier for the internet's Geralt-whisperers. Better late than never. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, November 15, 2023 10:00 AM Have you ever watched critically acclaimed 1998 comedy drama The Truman Show and thought "What if the whole city was people who didn't know they were in a TV show?". That's kind of the deal with American Arcadia, a puzzle-platformer about a dude who lives in an ultra advanced dome city that is for some reason 70s-themed, and is also a huge reality show for the Twitch generation. I actually love the 70s theme. This combined with story-within-a-story-within-a-story framing, bits of lovely, almost Wes Anderson-esque art design, and some extreme multi-tasking combining 2.5D and 3D makes American Arcadia an interesting little treat. Cover shared an announcement referencing a "corruption beast outbreak" regarding Hololive or Holostars Vtubers. The reveal showed up on both the Japanese and English social media accounts, suggesting it applies to all regions and could apply to a new generation and group.
The imagery shows a dark type of guild hall that isn't dissimilar from the Holostars Tempus one. There are tables with overturned chairs beside them and glasses and bottles on top of them. There are also some strange machines, skeletal architecture, and swords around. At the back of the room is a table with four chairs at it.
Here's the official announcement, which could suggest a new generation of Hololive or Holostars Vtubers. The Japanese one is identical. It didn't offer an exact date for a reveal.
It is also important to note that at the table, there are some informational boxes, with six showing up. These could represent the six current members of Tempus, which are Regis Altare, Axel Syrios, Gavis Bettel, Banzoin Hakka, Josuiji Shinri, and Machina x Flayon.
This comes after a major release for the Holostars Tempus Vtubers. Cover announced a Doppelganger visual novel starring the six of them. It is available on PCs worldwide. This is the second recent game release involving the company's performers, as Minato Aqua's AQUARIUM recently appeared on PCs worldwide.

It's looking like the Baldur's Gate 3 Xbox Series X release date could still fall in 2023. Larian Studios just teased a December release window and The Game Awards announcement.
Here's the social media post noting that it will reveal the Baldur's Gate 3 Xbox Series X release date on December 7, 2023. It doesn't specify an exact time for the reveal. Typically, this sort of news could come up as an announcement during presentations or during commercial trailers at the event. However, that does start at 4:30pm PT/7:30pm ET, so anytime after that could be fair game.
As a reminder, Baldur's Gate 3 first entered early access in October 2020. At that time, people could play through the initial build of the game via PCs and the now defunct Google Stadia. The full PC release fell on August 3, 2023. The PlayStation 5 version then showed up a little over a month later on September 6, 2023. Toward the end of August 2023, Larian noted that an Xbox Series X version of the game was in development and should be out in 2023. However, no exact time was mentioned.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available for the PlayStation 5 and PC. The Xbox Series X version is going to appear in December 2023, with the exact release date coming up at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023.

CD Projekt Red announced that there will be an official The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Mod Editor to assist people with creating and using mods in the game. However, it won't appear until 2024.
The company brought up the new tool on social media. The announcement didn't offer too many details about what to expect from it. However, it did note it can be used for altering existing content or implementing entirely new things. Note that the game first came out on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC in May 2015, so this mod support is coming about nine years after the game's official release.

While there's no official mod tool yet, there are plenty of mods still present in the game. For example, going to the official Nexus Mods page for the game shows that new ones are still appearing on a weekly basis.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. The official PC Mod Editor is in development, with a 2024 release window.

Square Enix officially releases official interviews with folks who worked on their games. The latest involved FFVII Remake and Rebirth composer Masashi Hamauzu who discussed his work on the game and, in particular, creating "Jessie's Theme" song.
Hamauzu noted that "Jessie's Theme" is a song that was originally new to FFVII Remake, due to the character's increased role in the remake. When he first discussed the track and taking charge of creating the piece, he noted, "Many composers took part in Final Fantasy VII Remake, but there was a distinction of roles, such as me being in charge of basically the new characters and themes. It wasn't an absolute rule, but I was put in charge of the newer parts."
After that, Hamauzu went over what he was trying to "say" about Jessie when composing her theme. He noted it was more about implying who she was, then connecting with the listener. Here's his full statement from the interview:
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come out for the PS5 on February 29, 2024. The exclusivity deal with Sony ends on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is currently available to play on the PS4, PS5, and PC.

Nearly three decades after its release in 1996, the Super Mario RPG remake gives the classic a much-deserved second chance on the Nintendo Switch. The off-beat project from Square and Nintendo not only holds up with its witty humor and quirky level design, but I think people will find it's better than they remember.
When Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars originally launched on the SNES, the game's risky genre mashup was pretty mind-blowing for many players. However, some may consider it something of a hidden gem, despite being responsible for spawning other beloved role-playing series' such as Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. The Super Mario RPG remake on the Nintendo Switch is a faithful adaptation of the cult classic while reimagining the entire game from the ground up with gorgeous high-definition graphics that breathe new life into this creative take on the side-scrolling plumber.
I first encountered Super Mario RPG when I was eight years old. While visiting my uncle's house in 1996, I accidentally stumbled across the SNES cartridge while rummaging through his room and was completely perplexed by its strange artwork. Decades later, I am shocked by how well the game's story still holds up. In particular, Super Mario RPG has a hilarious script that had me constantly bursting into laughter. One of the game's opening scenes perfectly sums this up. Mario celebrates his swift victory after defeating Bowser in battle. However, King Koopa decides that if he's going to go down, he's going to take his rival with him and cuts down his chandelier too. Both characters then burst into tears as they plummet to their peril. Super Mario RPG's snappy humor is rapid-fire at every turn in the plot, and this is the funniest the franchise has been in years.
In the game, players get to control the Nintendo mascot in turn-based combat. On the surface, the battle mechanic has the standard physical attacks, magic spells, and items. However, what surprised me is how engaging the battle system is, despite being 26 years old. Whenever you use a move against an enemy, you can double your damage if you press the attack button at the right time. However, every attack and magical spell has a unique animation, so it's not as easy as it sounds to work out the timing. You can also block all incoming damage from enemies if you press the defense button a second before your foe lands a hit on you. This system kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat throughout the game's campaign. Also, because enemy types constantly change, Super Mario RPG keeps you on your toes with the mechanics.
Combat in Super Mario RPG is incredibly fun. If you successfully time your attacks, you damage all enemies simultaneously while having a random chance of filling up your health or magic meter. Certain battles can even end with a random minigame, during which you can double your experience points or coins. In an adorable shuffle game, you must guess which egg baby Yoshi hides in as an example. These battle gimmicks create a fresh take on the traditional RPG formula, which results in combat never feeling tedious. The quirky systems also extend to the game's overworld, as hidden chests and various secret interactions are a joy to engage with. For a game made in 1996, you can tell how much love Square put into creating a unique fleshed-out world for their crossover project with Nintendo.
Super Mario RPG also strikes an interesting balance in that it's deep enough for veteran RPG players to enjoy, while not being too complicated for casual fans new to the genre. For example, the game has a pretty straightforward level-up system. After reaching enough points, you only have to choose between Physical, HP, and Magic stats. You power up your characters primarily by unlocking new armor and weapons. This split system allows you to fix your characters at any time if they become underpowered because of their stats. I also think the equipment system is more rewarding, as I was always looking forward to finding a new city or hidden chest to improve my character.
In Super Mario RPG, the Mushroom Kingdom is thrown into despair when the monstrous sword Exor crashes into Bowser's Castle. In an exciting twist, Mario is not going on another adventure to rescue Princess Peach for the millionth time. Instead, he gets to team up with Bowser, Peach, and newcomers Mallow and Geno to repair Star Road and defeat the nefarious Smithy Gang.
While the plot is not deep, its vibrant cast of characters and quirky story make it one of the best Super Mario campaigns in the franchise's history. Super Mario RPG also features some of the most diverse level designs since the release of Super Mario World in 1990. Whether it is a rocky mountain town run by mole miners or a tropical pond inhabited by dancing tadpoles, every section of the campaign is packed with quirky locations.
Speaking of quirky, Super Mario RPG is also one of the weirdest games in the long-running franchise. You can feel the influence of Square on this project, as the iconic Japanese studio was not afraid to create bizarre enemy designs. While playing the remake on the Switch, I was in awe of how weird the game was willing to get. Seriously, you get to take on a top-hat-wearing dinosaur and a four-eyed cat with a long tongue. This game often feels more like a Final Fantasy game, and it's all the more interesting because of it.
Regarding accessibility, Super Mario RPG has a Breezy or Normal difficulty setting. Breezy is the game's Easy Mode, which substantially scales back its challenging battles. Players not used to RPGs can comfortably jump into the campaign with this mode without any issues. On the other hand, Normal Mode offers a pretty decent challenge, as the game has various difficulty spikes throughout the story. During my playthrough, I had to spend a few hours grinding because I hadn't leveled enough and was getting easily defeated by late-game bosses.
The only thing I would caution some players against is relying too much on the game's Easy mode. I think it's an excellent accessibility option and will allow players of all ages to engage with the role-playing game. However, I found the mode to be a bit too simple when I tried it. Thankfully, Nintendo allows you to toggle the mode on or off anytime. So, if you find yourself getting stuck on a boss or feel like the game is becoming too challenging, you can easily switch it on. But I just found that leaving Easy mode on for too long can be detrimental, as your characters become overpowered quickly and you will start to snowball enemies. So, if you specifically want a challenge, just be mindful not to leave the more accessible setting on for too long.
Super Mario RPG is also gorgeous. Although the remake carefully re-creates every pixel of the original game, Square's offbeat designs and use of vibrant colors stand out in the HD reimagining. Super Mario RPG specifically looks lovely on the Switch OLED, as its colors jump from the screen. This is particularly true during the Triple Move group attack segments in combat, which trigger a beautiful cutscene of Mario and his party members coming together to create a devastating attack. Because the game meticulously re-creates the game faithfully, I feel this is a rare case where the remake is better than the original. Instead of overhauling everything to modern standards,it keeps the game's original art direction intact and is more of a restoration showcasing what the game was always meant to look like.
Super Mario RPG breathes new life into an SNES classic, allowing players to re-experience one of Mario's most unique and adventurous titles on the Switch. The remake is an accessible entry point for newcomers to the role-playing genre while offering a challenge for veteran players. Despite being decades old, Super Mario RPG still holds up today with its witty humor and hilarious story. The game's engaging combat and quirky battle systems also make this one of the best games in the Mario franchise.
Super Mario RPG will be available on the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023.

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Wednesday, November 15, 2023 2:00 PM What's worse than one flying boss? That's right. Two flying bosses. Beating the Winged Pale Lament in The Last Faith is a bit of a trick due to their airborne nature, but once you have it cracked, you'll have them grounded. Bringing the Winged Pale Lament to the ground At first, these guys can seem a little daunting due to their double team and airborne nature. However, they're just a pair of softies, really, and can be taken down easily with the right tactics. Keep them together Your weapon in The Last Faith usually has good range, even if you're using something like the Axe. This means that if you keep the two of them together, your swings will do double the damage. However, in the process of cleansing, he becomes a horrible monster, akin to the story of Jekyll and Hyde. It is up to you to defeat Dr Ridley Hermann and continue to fight another day in The Last Faith. Dr Ridley Hermann's Move Set I find that with The Last Faith, beating bosses is much more about learning move sets than healing. This is not a unique mechanic to The Last Faith, but it does mean you need to keep your head on a swivel. Dr Hermann has two stages. These are the moves you need to watch for and how to stay ahead.
