PCGamesN Tuesday, March 12, 2024 7:04 AM  I'm so conflicted about FPS games and new shooters right now. On the one side, we have Counter-Strike 2 and Call of Duty, which are simple, swift, and largely committed to the basic joy of online battling, but don't always lend themselves to the tension and spontaneous drama I would perhaps enjoy. On the other side, we have Escape From Tarkov, Rainbow Six Siege, Hell Let Loose, and harder military sims like Arma. I love the ostensible depth of these games, the heightened difficulty and the focus on tactics, but that can also make them hard to enjoy, especially if you're playing them for the first time. There are great stories and moments to experience in the likes of Hunt Showdown, but make one move, or fail to find a group of comrades with whom you can easily cooperate, and you'll find yourself dead, and waiting once again for the next round to start. A new FPS game, however, might be the solution. Attempting to find the middle ground between accessibility and realism, it's already leaping up the Steam charts after a hugely successful first playtest. You can imagine my intrigue when I saw that Tents And Trees, a picross-ish puzzle game previously on Switch and phones, is coming to PC on April 24th. That's a couple of months away, but you can play the short demo on Steam now to get a taste. It's slick and clean, and I like it! |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, March 12, 2024 7:50 AM  I've written a bit about playing Helldivers 2 as a solo diver, noting that Arrowhead's frenetic shooter holds up surprisingly well when you rudely insist on treating it like an open world stealth sim, a la Metal Gear Solid V. The developers have weighed in on this front, commenting that strictly speaking, Helldivers 2 doesn't support stealth at all. It's just designed in an "agnostic", systems-first way and this in itself makes stealth a possibility. It's also a quiet attempt to capture something of the intricacy of a full-blown military simulator, while still being a very "arcadey" game at heart, which owes a little to Arrowhead's own collective time in the military. |
