Cozy new Metroidvania has Dark Souls design but a heart of gold

The best Metroidvania games have typically focused on combat, but highlights like the masterful Tunic and the recent, excellent Animal Well show how successfully the format can work when it leans more towards puzzle design rather than action. While both of those still involve a fair amount of peril, now, from indie developer Hyper Luminal and publisher Little Nook, comes Pine Hearts, a cozy new story-led adventure game that's just arrived on Steam.

Hyper realistic strategy game and War Thunder rival just hit 1.0

When it comes to war and strategy games, how much detail do you really want? XCOM and Command and Conquer demand a certain amount of attention and expertise, but they're also relatively easy to pick up and play, and they make intuitive sense - stay in cover, don't get destroyed, and try to kill the enemy. The further you zoom out, the more complex, and arguably the more rewarding, the strategy experience becomes. Channeling the realism and military sim pretensions of Arma and War Thunder, perhaps the biggest and most detailed war game there is has just hit 1.0.

While I've always thought the race towards graphical hyperrealism isn't as pervasive as it's often perceived, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is definitely one of those games. The kind that probably has twelve artists dedicated to the recreation of visible pores, that sort of thing. It's so focused on looking pretty that it hasn't even noticed the title and subtitle got mixed up.

Sure enough, Hellblade 2 is a harsh test for older hardware, with a heavy reliance on DLSS or FSR upscaling to keep performance sweet. That said, it's no Dragons Dogma 2-style technical horrorshow either. A happy balance of visuals and smoothness is attainable on plush PCs and low-end laptops alike, while DLSS 3 frame generation can deliver an effective kick in the framerate pants on RTX 40 series GPUs.

People Should Play Genshin Impact Instead of Wuthering Waves (at Least at First)

Wuthering Waves just launched and, well, there are a lot of comparisons to Genshin Impact! They're similar sorts of games, after all. I've sampled a bit of it, as well as played HoYoVerse's now famous title a ton. While in time Wuthering Waves could maybe be worth it, I feel like right now people's time would be better spent going through Genshin Impact instead.

First of all, the whole gameplay element in Wuthering Waves is essentially identical to Genshin Impact. Granted, this isn't exactly unique. Many other open-world types of titles feature the same sorts of exploration. I mean, Genshin Impact itself was accused of being a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild clone ahead of its launch due to some early footage and area examples. But the thing here is that I feel like Wuthering Waves doesn't feel like it has anything at launch that we really haven't seen in Genshin Impact, Tower of Fantasy, or other titles.

So… let's give Wuthering Waves some time! Right now, we're seeing a lot of similarities to games like Genshin Impact. But we also know that HoYoVerse encountered those same sorts of issues in launch areas. That then changed when we started to see later updates with regions like Inazuma, Sumeru, and Fontaine. So this could be a situation where Wuthering Waves needs time to come into its own as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRhVca9Aeu4&ab_channel=WutheringWaves

Especially since, well, a big part of one of the things that would make you want to explore is a bit tainted. The localization for Wuthering Waves is terrible, as the translation means that so much of the text reads awkwardly. This doesn't just apply to flavor or tutorial types of text from NPC. (For example, "Have you confirmed the inventory? What about the spare list? Sort out the consumables as soon as possible.") But you also have major characters like Yangyang saying, "Practice is better than words." Or we hear Taoqi say "And for your own safety, please be reluctant to leave city grounds without authorization." One of the early positive impressions praising the fact we can skip text and the story isn't a good thing! Given so much is voiced, odds are we won't see the past parts fixed. But perhaps there's hope for the future with fan feedback?

Meanwhile, Genshin Impact has such a fantastic localization. Yes, we may get an occasional spelling error in the written text. Sometimes there'll be an awkward localization of a song that sounded way better in Chinese or Japanese. But the flavor and detail going into the work is so much better. It's richer and feels more unique. Even the fact that, while we are dealing with a protagonist who is stranded and a mystery after an attack, we aren't relying on the typical amnesiac protagonist helps enhance the experience.

Really, the only reason to consider playing Wuthering Waves over Genshin Impact is the character designs and what they can do in combat. It's the one area where both games can stand up in unique ways. But then we also have to consider these are gacha games. The number of characters you get for free is few and far between. At launch, we don't have many available in Wuthering Waves. I also know from experience that (sadly) power-creep is a thing in gacha games. So this is again a situation where someone should wait, perhaps at least until a few weeks or months after launch, until Wuthering Waves finds its footing and go with the more established Genshin Impact for now instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WLAUxb8AUk&t=73s&ab_channel=GenshinImpact

I suppose what I'm saying is Wuthering Waves might not be the right choice at this exact moment, and Genshin Impact could be instead the game to play. Down the road, this could blossom. It could become more unique. The localization could end up being better. There could be a larger selection of characters and balancing could happen. But for now, maybe wait and go with something more tried and true.

Wuthering Waves is available for the PC and mobile devices. Genshin Impact is available on the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices.

The Vic Viper has been a staple unit appearing in numerous Konami entries. However, Kotobukiya modeled this kit after the transformable LEV piloted by Leo Stenbuck in the 2003 PlayStation 2 entry Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner.

The kit initially appeared in June 2012 to help promote the releases of Zone of the Enders HD Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the same year. Other than the transformation gimmick, the set will also include swappable alternate parts for the manipulator hands.

Here are some of the sample images of the Vic Viper model kit:

Romancing SaGa - Saga Prefecture collaboration 10th anniversary event

Square Enix revealed that it will hold the "Romancing Saga" collaboration's 10th anniversary event in Japan's Tokyo and Saga prefectures in the latter half of 2024. This milestone will pertain to the collaboration between the Romancing SaGa game series and the actual Japanese prefecture Saga for sharing a similar name.

When Square Enix first launched the collaboration in 2014, it held an event in Tokyo that managed to get a long queue of visitors. The company then gradually added more collaboration content in the Saga prefecture, such as utility hole covers in 2020 and train liveries in 2022.

The collaboration will come full circle with its 10th-anniversary event taking place in Tokyo again. People will be able to visit the Tokyo Midtown Hibiya Atrium to attend the event for three days from August 30, 2024, to September 1, 2024.

In addition, Square Enix will hold multiple events in the actual Saga prefecture in late 2024. See Honkai Impact 3rd Lantern Lone Destruction: Shadowchase Battlesuit

We already knew Lantern Tsavorae, the Shu of Destruction, would appear as a playable character via the Honkai Impact 3rd battlesuit Lone Destruction: Shadowchase. Now we know a bit more about her design ahead of her 7.5 launch, thanks to a HoYoVerse post.

First, some of the details go into what sorts of damage we can expect. Lone Destruction: Shadowchase is an S-rank battlesuit. She is a PSY character who will deal Fire damage when you use her to attack. Like the boss version of her players get to fight, she switches between multiple weapons as you play. However, the weapon you'll need to get to equip on her is Rapid-Shot Crossbow. As she's a Part 2 character, she uses the Astral Ring Specialization system

HoYoVerse wrapped up its insights into Lone Destruction: Shadowchase by showing some Honkai Impact 3rd equipment that would work well for the Lantern battlesuit. It highlights three Stigmatas, which all feature Lantern and seem to be new, as well as what look like two new Rapid-Shot Crossbows. One recommended weapon is the five-star version of Burn the Long Night. The other looks to be a new, signature crossbow.

Finally, one of the infographics go over certain design points HoYoVerse incorporated to show her character. It noted how her hair glows, for one. It also pointed out her affinity for lollipops. The last detail noted how, because she's the Shu of Destruction and throws herself into fights, her clothing is always torn.

Here are all three of the Honkai Impact 3rd battlesuit Lone Destruction: Shadowchase Lantern images.

This is the second of the Seven Shus to become playable in the game. The first was the Shu of Pleasure named Thelema. Her Mad Pleasure: Shadowbringer appeared in 7.4.

Honkai Impact 3rd is available for the PC and mobile devices, and 7.5 is on the way.

yoasobi nhk

Yoasobi will be in charge of writing and performing the NHK Sports 2024 theme song. The duo will be collaborating with three mangaka with series in Shonen Jump+ and a novelist to create an original song.

The song, according to the NHK, will play in streams of a variety of sports this year, as well as in the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. For this project, Shueisha has requested three sports mangas from three Jump+ manga artists. Once they finish the mangas, writer Jun Esaka, who has worked on many Naruto novelizations, will write a novel based on them. Then, Yoasobi will create an original song based on that.

Taizan 5, who worked on Takopi's Original Sin, wrote a story called Hanareta Futari. It appears to be a story about a soccer team. Yuki Kirishima, who worked on one-shots like Metamololita, wrote Parallel Lane. It seems to focus on a guy and a girl, though it's unclear what sport they play. Finally, Hirusagari Haruno wrote Owaranai Deuce, which seems to feature two girls who play tennis.

Yoasobi is a very popular Japanese music duo featuring Vocaloid producer Ayase and singer-songwriter Lilas Ikuta. Yoasobi has released many major songs for anime, including "Idol" for Oshi no Ko, "Kaibutsu" for Beastars, and "Shukufuku" for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. It has also released songs based on stories, such as "Gunjou" for Blue Period and "Seventeen" for Iro Chiagi no Trump.

The Yoasobi NHK sports theme song will play during major sports events such as the Olympics and Paralympics in 2024.

Bag Shaped Like Xbox Controller Heading to Zara

The site for the clothing and accessory store Zara shared a product listing for its upcoming Xbox Controller Belt Bag. There's no release date for this bag yet, but it will cost $29.99.

This particular bag is designed to look like an Xbox Series X controller. It has the same share and screenshot buttons. The whole bag is controller shaped, with a green tag and accents. The Xbox logo on the front glows in the dark. It will be just over six inches tall, almost nine inches long, and two and a half inches deep. The Xbox console logo is also on the back clip.

Here's a closer look at the bag from different angles.

And here it is directly compared to a controller.

This isn't the first time the retailer sold a bag that looked like a game controller, as it did so for the Dreamcast as well. That one costs $29.90 and is a cross-body bag. In the past, Zara also sold an Xbox Backpack for $55.90 that also included a coin purse shaped like one of Microsoft's controllers.

The Xbox Controller Belt Bag is "coming soon" to Zara. When it does arrive, it will cost $29.90 like the company's Dreamcast Controller bag.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is one of three DB games on Steam just made available in Japan in May 2024

People in most countries worldwide have been able to purchase PC versions of Dragon Ball games via Steam. However, Japan was not included in that list until now. Japanese outlets reported that Bandai Namco has just made the Steam releases of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot available for purchase in Japan on May 23, 2024. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

While PC releases have been a given for global markets, Japanese companies still have some hesitation with releasing PC versions of their games in their own country. Prior to this announcement, players in Japan had to purchase the PC versions via Microsoft Store. This is because the latter platform is linked with the Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions, which are also available earlier in Japan.

This issue also causes a bizarre case for the upcoming title Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. The game's Steam page mentions the inclusion of Japanese subtitles, but its Japanese website still only lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as of May 2024. Dragon Ball: The Breakers was an exception to the norm, as Bandai Namco had included the PC Steam release in Japan during its initial reveal.

However, Bandai Namco has still yet to make every Dragon Ball game on Steam purchasable in Japan. In its report, 4Gamer added that Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission and the first Dragon Ball Xenoverse are still not available in Japan as of May 2024.

The PC releases of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on Steam are available worldwide, including in Japan.

Dragon Quest Champions is one of two DQ games Square Enix will close in July 2024

Square Enix will shut down two Dragon Quest mobile games at the end of July 2024. The titles in question will be Dragon Quest Champions and Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi. The company made the announcements simultaneously on the respective official X accounts for Champions and Keshi Keshi on May 23, 2024, at 3pm JST (2am ET).

Dragon Quest Champions is a turn-based command battle RPG with a PvP mode that is reminiscent of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Square Enix employed help from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, which is best known for Dynasty Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes. Square Enix held a beta test in February 2023, but it actually released the game on June 13, 2023. That means Dragon Quest Champions has still yet to reach its first anniversary when the company announced its closure.

Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi is also a collaborative project, but Square Enix did it with NHN PlayArt of LINE: Disney Tsum Tsum fame. As implied by the Japanese title that means "Erase Erase," this game features the series' heroic characters as rubber erasers, and they are tasked to exterminate doodles made by an evil pen. As the game came out in Japan on December 1, 2021, it will have a longer total lifespan of exactly two years and eight months.

Dragon Quest Champions will remain available until July 30, 2024, and Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi will close the day after on July 31, 2024. Both Dragon Quest games have been playable on Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan.
