Kotaku Tuesday, June 18, 2024 4:30 PM There aren't many video games out there that let me toss a garbage can at a '40s-era mobster's groin and then spin-kick him off a pier into shark-infested waters. Thankfully, Fallen Aces, out now on PC via Steam early access, lets me do just that and so much more. |
Kotaku Tuesday, June 18, 2024 4:00 PM Nintendo's reputation for taking down anyone it deems is using its intellectual property in a way it doesn't like is pretty well documented. Kotaku Tuesday, June 18, 2024 1:50 PM I don't have the wealth of history with classic RPGs that many of my peers and colleagues do. PCGamesN Tuesday, June 18, 2024 4:56 PM Voice acting is a funny business in gaming. It's one of the core things which can make or break a game, poor or flat voice acting can leave players feeling disengaged or even turned away. Good voice acting, however, can turn a good game into something great, so it's time we paid more attention to the craft. PCGamesN Tuesday, June 18, 2024 12:31 PM Corsair has just launched its LX RGB Series of iCUE Link PC case fans, and they're easily the most tempting yet of the company's range of single-cable fans. The new Corsair fans provide an ideal balance of RGB dazzle and affordability, bringing the possibility of a stunning gaming PC build within reach of more buyers. Corsair has previously launched its QX RGB and RX RGB iCUE Link fans, with both making a compelling case for a place on our best PC case fan guide. However, the QX RGB is quite expensive and the RX RGB is aimed at high performance rather than silence and has very basic RGB. The LX RGB should, then, be the ideal balance with more RGB than the RX, a lower price than the QX, and what should be quiet performance. PCGamesN Tuesday, June 18, 2024 12:03 PM What is the Elden Ring DLC release date? We've been anticipating a follow-up expansion to FromSoftware's definitive soulslike since we first sat upon the throne and became the Elden Lord. Fortunately, the long wait is almost over, and the Shadow of the Erdtree looms large. Elden Ring immediately secured a reputation as one of the best PC games of all time following its release in 2022. Since then, FromSoftware has been hard at work on the DLC, which sends the Tarnished into the Land of Shadow in pursuit of the Empyrean Miquella. As my Summer Game Fest schedule began to fill up, Amazon Games and Ncsoft's Throne and Liberty was the game that rounded out an exhausting second day in the LA sun, thankfully slowing things down after high-octane shooters like Marvel Rivals. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, June 18, 2024 12:35 PM Battle Aces is billed as "a vision of the future for real-time strategy" but if you glance at a screen, you might think you're staring into the past: another toonified science fiction world of scuffed, shiny nodules, lanes and arenas, an overly functional colour scheme, and hotkeyed hordes of little and large units that appear devoid of personality, even by top-down generalissimo standards. Let's start by addressing that last complaint: the units of Battle Aces have immense personality. It just doesn't come across well in screens. Each is a mix of bug and robot, with a clutch of finely observed, quirky-but-never-gratuitous animations that immediately had me choosing favourites when I played the game at Summer Game Fest. "Our main unit design concept artist, his father was also an illustrator and nature illustrator at that, so he's already accomplished with animal designs, but he also loves mechs and robots too," notes Uncapped Games art director Ted Park. "So he's kind of melded both worlds as much as he can." |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, June 18, 2024 12:00 PM If nothing else, Workers & Resources Colon Soviet Republic will give anyone an appreciation of the incredible complexity and difficulty of building and maintaining a city. On another day I might call it the first ever city building game. Even a Settlers or Factorio cannot match its extreme focus on logistical simulation. It isn't realism for its own sake (look no further than the automated vehicles and the ludicrous citizen behaviour to refute that), but a fundamentally different interpretation of what city building means. It's about co-ordinating all your pieces so they'll be in the right place to support each other, and how the whole is all that matters, but that whole will fail if you don't organise its parts. It is… a lot. It's too much at times. But if you have those times, it will occupy them like nothing else. |

Kotobukiya has opened pre-orders for its upcoming figure of Adol Christin from Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. The company will formally release the figure in December 2024 with an MSRP of 26,950 yen (~$170.45).
This static figure will have a scale of 1/7. Adol Christin has an actual recorded height of 175 cm (5'9"), so his height on that scale would be 25 cm (9.84 in) when standing still. However, this figure will only have an overall height of around 22.5 cm (8.86 in) due to his sword-wielding stance.
Here are some of the sample images for Adol's new figure, including the base pedestal designed after the Isle of Seiren:
The figure is also available to order via other websites that support international shipping, such as AmiAmi. However, only select stores like the Japan-exclusive Kotobukiya Online Shop will offer a bonus alternate head part that shows Adol smiling instead of frowning.
The pre-order window for Adol's figure opened not long after Kotobukiya shared sample images of its prototype earlier in June 2024, as his figure is already completely painted. The company is also working on another figure based on Ys VIII's heroine Dana Iclucia. However, the latter will take more time until release, as the company has yet to paint her figure prototype.
Kotobukiya will formally release the Ys VIII Adol Christin figure in December 2024. It will model this figure after the series protagonist's appearance in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, the action RPG available worldwide on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Studio Trigger has revealed that it will help Aniplex hold a series of crossover exhibitions featuring Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill. Officially titled "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann VS Kill la Kill Exhibition," it will be held at four Parco department stores across Japan throughout the latter half of 2024. The first event will appear in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, in July 2024.
These exhibitions will feature not only displays of artwork from both anime titles but also sales of exclusive merchandise. In addition, it will have guide voiceovers by Gurren Lagann's Kamina and Kill la Kill's Ryuko. The voice actors Katsuyuki Konishi and Ami Koshimizu will provide new voiceovers based on their respective characters.
People who want to enter the exhibitions will have to pay 1,800 yen (~$11.40) to gain access. An exception will apply to elementary school students and younger children, who can enter for free. However, they must be accompanied by older guardians who must get the paid tickets.
Here is the full schedule for the exhibitions:
This crossover is made possible because Aniplex was involved in the production of both titles. Trigger is the anime studio that worked on Kill la Kill. Meanwhile, Gurren Lagann was made by Gainax, which had gone into bankruptcy recently in June 2024.
The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann VS Kill la Kill Exhibition will kick off at the Ikebukuro Parco Factory in Tokyo on July 12-29, 2024. The event will also appear in Nagoya in August 2024, Fukuoka in late September 2024, and Sapporo in December 2024.

The Japanese McDonald's Twitter (X) account shared three posts teasing a Kiki's Delivery Service collaboration. There will likely be toys or a new menu item in the future based on the property.
All the tweets are quite simple, with "This is a delivery" as the only sentence. To be precise, while the art style is similar to Ghibli and the character's dressed like Kiki (complete with Jiji in the animation with her on the broom), she's not actually Kiki. The first animation has her flying on a broom with a take-out bag from McDonald's around the handle. The second one shows her running through a marketplace while holding a bag of groceries.
Previous McDonald's Japan collaborations include ones with Sanrio and Kirby. Both of these collaborations focused on toys and other small items in the Happy Meals. Sometimes, such as in the case with One Piece, McDonald's releases limited time menu items.
Kiki's Delivery Service is an animated fantasy film from Studio Ghibli that came out in 1989. The plot follows a young witch named Kiki, who has a talking black cat named Jiji. She opens up a business in which she delivers goods via broomstick, but when she experiences a personal crisis where she no longer knows what purpose she has in life, she loses both the ability to fly and understand Jiji.
More information on the possible Kiki's Delivery Service collaboration with McDonald's Japan will appear later.

HoYoVerse has been sharing character trailers for Zenless Zone Zero leading up to launch, and the latest looks at Grace Howard. She is an S-rank Agent affiliated with Belobog Heavy Industries and will be playable at launch.
The video begins with Grace working on a machine. Her fellow Belobog ally Koleda. Koleda is telling her about a situation. She referred to Grace as "sis," while Grace called Koleda "sweet pea" and a robot a "child." However, when Koleda reveals an Ethereal was at the scene, Grace gets so excited that she abandons her task and takes off to go see.
From there, we see Grace heading into the field. This is the gameplay showcase portion of the trailer. She's an Electric type character with Pierce attacks and the Anomaly fighting style.
In the past, HoYoVerse shared quite a few details about Grace and her role as a character with Belobog in Zenless Zone Zero. For example, an official pamphlet revealed she is the technology specialist for the company. The official website also emphasized her caring nature and intelligence. However, this Zenless Zone Zero character trailer is the first time we've gotten to see her impulsiveness and excitement when it comes to the robots she loves.
Zenless Zone Zero will come to the PS5, PC, and mobile devices on July 4, 2024.

With Katsura Hashino's departure from P-Studio and Kazuhisa Wada becoming the new head of the division, we're about to enter a new era for the Persona series after Persona 3, 4, and 5 revolutionized it. One of the changes that I hope P-Studio brings to Persona 6 (whenever it comes out) is a playable cast of adult characters, rather than yet another story about teenagers in high school going through high school troubles. Yes, today, we're rehashing that old discourse.
While you can play Persona games as standalone titles, some common themes and motifs (not to mention gameplay elements) tie the series together and give them all a sense of cohesion. Themes of friendship, self-discovery, and growth are present at the heart of most Persona games. Those are basically the ingredients for success in a shonen manga. So it stands to reason that the cast tends to skew young. But after three mainline titles in a row focusing on the teenage experience, adults should get a chance to reach out to the truth of who they really are under the Persona mask.
Adults? In a Persona game? Preposterous! The Persona games are a very uniquely teenager experience! That's the kind of response some people have given to the idea of a Persona game about adults. But is it truly that strange? Before we continue, I would like to note that "someone 19 or older" is an adult in the context of this entire article. While the Persona series has always had its share of hardcore fans, it didn't blow up and become the global juggernaut it is today until the success of Persona 3. Previous games in the series, such as Persona 2, have never shied away from playable adult characters. The problem is that the first two games (from Team Maniax) are fundamentally different when it comes to how characters get their Personas. Because of that, it's hard to do a one-to-one comparison.
Fortunately, the newer entries seem to be experimenting with older playable characters. In Persona 5 Strikers, Zenkichi Hasegawa joins the party as Wolf. He is a police inspector who's probably in his forties or so. This is even more of a spin-off than Strikers was, but in The Phantom X, there's Kayo Tomiyama, who moonlights as Okyann in the Metaverse. When she's not serving as the player's Navigator in battle, she's a housewife in her mid-forties. To be fair, she looks much younger than her actual age when she's in the Metaverse.
From what I can see online, there are two main camps to this discourse: those who believe that Persona games cannot be about people older than teenagers, and those who want to play as adults in the next entry. There's always the chance that Persona 6 will do what Persona 3 did and change the overarching rules for how someone can awaken to a Persona. That would be an interesting thing to see. But even if it doesn't, there's nothing about Persona that inherently tells a teenager story. It's only the framing device of "transfer student" that makes it feel that way.
When thinking of stories that can only work when the characters are a certain age, the first one I think of is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. A lot of the story beats feel like they would be unbelievable if the characters are older. Sayaka is the worst offender of this. Aside from her black-and-white worldview and obsession with justice (very Persona 5 of her), her general naivete about love led to her making a stupid decision with major consequences. Apart from Sayaka, Madoka in Homura's original timeline decided to become a magical girl to save a cat. These are choices that are only believable when the characters are twelve years old. The narrative focuses on the girl experience.
Now, let's go back to Persona. None of the major story beats really focus on something that is teenage-specific. There are some interpersonal conflicts that arise from general immaturity—think Junpei's jealousy early on in Persona 3, Yosuke bringing weapons to the food court in Persona 4, and the Ryuji and Morgana argument in Persona 5. But other than that, the stories aren't as centered on the teenager experience as Madoka Magica was for girls.
Let's say that Persona 6 doesn't change anything in how characters can awaken to their Persona. The new method of awakening to your Persona in 4 and 5 is, in simple terms, to come clean to yourself about your true feelings. It's a bit naive to think that adults magically figure themselves out as soon as they hit 19 years old. In the case of Futaba, she had to overcome a past trauma before she awakened her Persona. Again, this is not unique to teenagers. In Persona 2, Baofu's past trauma and guilt are major parts of his narrative arc and characterization. Zenkichi and Kayo prove that the newer versions of Personas can also manifest in adults. So, please, Atlus, give us more!
Without sacrificing realism, there are only so many stories and themes to explore with a teenager. But adults can have such a wealth of experiences, both negative and positive, and complexities just by merit of living a few more years and going through more stuff. Zenkichi was a single, widowed dad who was losing touch with his beloved daughter thanks to his workaholic tendencies. That's so interesting precisely because it was out of the expected norm from Persona.
Something I didn't consider until discussing this with a friend is how the Persona writers can get away with lots of things when the characters are teenagers and not adults. It's pretty easy to accept a teenager being self-contradictory. How many teens are there on Twitter who love Black Butler but take offense to "age difference" ships? Like, my friend, you are reading the age difference manga. This is the most obvious in Persona 5, which had one of the messiest stories I've seen from an Atlus game. Despite the narrative framing them as these great heroes, the Phantom Thieves have a very childish and reactionary sense of justice. The game never seems to acknowledge this.
With the exception of Madarame, all of their targets are people others chose for them, or people they need to target because otherwise they're in danger. Kamoshida is another exception I'm willing to overlook because he's the first one and the inciting incident. The marketing for the game sold the Phantom Thieves like they're in control of their own destiny. Yet, never at any point did it feel like they had any real agency over their decisions.
A character making dumb choices does not make for bad writing. Rather, it's the lack of consistency in themes and tone that do. Ryuji repeatedly blowing the Phantom Thieves' cover in public with his loud voice and impulsive personality doesn't mean that the writers are incompetent. It's a character flaw. What was bad was when the Phantom Thieves thought Ryuji died after Shido's Palace. After he reveals himself perfectly alive albeit shaken up, the Phantom Thieves beat him up as a "funny" moment. It felt out of character at best. At worst, it's insensitive considering Ryuji's history of physical abuse from his dad and Kamoshida, on top the fact someone did actually die in that Palace. Though you can argue that only Joker's aware of Ryuji's past, the writers could have simply chosen to not include this, or turn it into a more emotional reunion instead.
The game clearly wants us to take Kamoshida's sexual abuse and pedophilia seriously. It opens with an attempted suicide, after all. But then, after his arc, Atlus starts using the girls for fanservice. Even during it, Ann expressed discomfort about her Panther catsuit. This sort of "Eek, I'm in a revealing outfit but I don't like it!" gag is almost always to titillate. After Kamoshida, we had: Ryuji looking up Ann's skirt while she's sleeping, the girls' underwear being visible due to sweat, a close-up of the girls' necks and legs during the summer festival, and more. I'm not arguing for Persona 5 to remain as grim as it was in the beginning. I'm saying there are ways to be funny without objectifying girls, Hashino, especially when the opening act of the game was about how bad it is to sexualize minors.
As a disclaimer, I don't care about fictional characters' ages. But it's hard not to side-eye Persona 5 when the game opened with Kamoshida being an unrepentant and disgusting pedophile, only for the rest of the game to use the teenage girls as eye candy. This isn't even a point of equality where I'm trying to demand the guys also be sweaty or naked. The dissonance between the themes and narrative framing was just ridiculous, and a microcosm of a lot of Persona 5's issues as a story.
Again, while adults are fully capable of being hypocrites, it's much more common for teens to say something and then do something completely different. Ryuji calling out Kamoshida for being gross only to turn around and be gross himself is a pretty realistic reaction...for a "dumb" teenager. It's easy to forgive him for this due to his age, whereas if Ryuji was older, people might not let him off the hook with a "boys will be boys" mentality.
I've seen people defend some aspects of Persona 4 and 5's writing as cultural differences between the west and Japan. For example, if you take into consideration Japan's family register system, it's very easy to understand why Akechi's reveal of his orphan status was framed like a big deal. But these inconsistencies in tone, values, and themes are not a cultural difference. It's just bad writing. Persona 4 suffered from something similar, though not to the degree of 5. Could an older cast of characters guarantee better writing? Well, no. But it can certainly place more pressure and expectations on the writers when it comes to narrative beats and characterization.
The unfortunate reality is that games don't just depend on developers and programmers. Investors are a major part of the process as well. Like it or not, the Persona brand has become associated with a certain narrative and people have certain expectations. Much like how you can always expect a mainline Pokemon game to follow a young child going on their first adventure to collect gym badges, Persona games have become stories about a transfer student who moves to a new place, meets new friends, and finds themself wrapped up in some murder plot or other. As I mentioned earlier, some people are firm in their belief that Persona is a series about teenagers. Maybe those people won't even bother buying a Persona game if it differs too much from that premise, and that "what if" might be enough for investors to shut down a potential adult-oriented narrative.
Atlus has not given us any real information on Persona 6 yet. For all we know, the next game might really feature a cast of people in their early twenties who are adults, ready to take on societal injustices while balancing their career and/or university. I sincerely hope we can finally graduate from high school and explore some more varied or nuanced narratives again.

With only a short time left before Firefly makes her playable debut in Honkai: Star Rail, HoYoVerse has released another trailer for her. You can watch "Embers in a Shell" on its YouTube channel.
Here is the Honkai: Star Rail Firefly trailer:
You can also watch it in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Though the trailer starts out like a sort of demonstration of Firefly's capabilities in battle, it moves on to focus on her determination to make her own choices in life until her inevitable death. The shots of Firefly inside of her SAM suit are similar to the shots Marvel Studios employs for Tony Stark inside Iron Man. As well, the particle-like wings that emerge from the back of SAM's suit are similar to that of the Moonlight Butterfly from Turn A Gundam or the Wings of Light effect from Gundam Seed Destiny's Destiny Gundam. It's unclear if HoYoVerse used any of the above properties, or similar mecha-focused media, for inspiration.
Firefly will be a 5-star Fire Destruction unit who'll be in the first phase of Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.3. She'll specialize in Break Effect damage, which will make her perfect on teams with characters like Ruan Mei or Harmony Trailblazer. The new Iron Cavalry Against the Scourge and Forge of the Kalpagni Lantern Relic Sets will also match her kit.
Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Version 2.3 of Honkai: Star Rail will go live on June 19, 2024.

The Universal Studios Japan (USJ) X (formerly known as Twitter) account teased an upcoming collaboration with Chainsaw Man. More information on it will appear at a later date.
There aren't many details about the event. It features a person whose face is mutating into a more monstrous maw trying to get at a person whose hand is turning into a chainsaw. The artwork of the hand and the chainsaw is a match to Denji's arm in promotional materials of Chainsaw Man. So while chainsaws in horror fiction are a very staple trope, it is more than likely that this will be a Chainsaw Man event.
Universal Studios Japan often runs limited time events and collaborations with other intellectual properties. For example, it had several collaborations with Resident Evil and Demon Slayer. Usually, if you go to the theme park during the event, you'll be able to order limited time menus from an exclusive menu, as well as enjoy themed rides. These rides tend to involve an indoor roller coaster that takes you on an adventure based on the work, complete with newly recorded lines from the voice actors. You'll watch scenes that are projected on a screen while the coaster shakes or otherwise imitates action.
Chainsaw Man is readily available for streaming via services such as Crunchyroll. More information on the USJ Chainsaw Man collaboration event will appear later.

Part 2 of the NieR Automata Ver1.1a anime will start airing on Crunchyroll from July 5, 2024. This is the same starting date as Japan.
You can watch the trailer for it here. However, it's the same as Promotion File 11, which Aniplex released earlier in 2024:
A-1 Pictures first announced the second cour in late May 2024. The trailer teases some of the battles that the YoRHa androids will undergo, as well as shows part of the Red Girls' more sinister true personality. As a reminder, LiSA will be singing "Black Box," the opening of NieR Automata Ver1.1a part 2. In the past, LiSA contributed opening or ending songs for anime like Fate/Zero, and Demon Slayer. Though it was only for the Japanese dub, she also sang the theme song for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
NieR Automata Ver1.1a is an animated adaptation of the award-wining NieR Automata video game. However, rather than a straight adaptation, it features some characters from the stage play as well. The main voice actors have reprised their roles and like the game, it features music from MONACA.

Ahead of the release of the latest FFXIV Dawntrail expansion, Square Enix released a detailed plan to handle server congestion at launch. Starting with Patch 7.0, the release of Dawntrail Early Access, the company will implement several limitations to curb the strain on the servers.
To begin with, FFXIV login queues will be implemented in a more stringent way. Logins will prioritize full version accounts over free trial players. In addition, to keep server congestion in FFXIV Dawntrail to a minimum at launch, they will be limiting Data Center travel between servers. In North American and European servers, some Data Centers will be completely cut off from travel. For the Japanese servers, the company will be limiting the amount of non-home world characters that will be able to log in. The new Oceanian Data Center is being floated by Square Enix as an option to use the Data Center travel feature to avoid periods of high congestion.
Players will also be unable to create new characters on World servers with high congestion. Square Enix also recommended players plan around normal times of high congestion for players to get in and access the expansion. These times are listed as follows:
Square Enix also mentioned that the early access release falling on a weekend may make the congestion windows larger. The company advised us to keep that in mind as players log on during that time period.
Famously, there was a massive bottleneck during the FFXIV Stormblood expansion colloquially referred to as Raubahn Extreme. It had players lining up on servers to, one at a time, attempt a story-mandatory instanced fight. Square Enix is hoping to avoid any troubles like for the new release.
In the most recent Live Letter from the Producer, the FFXIV staff showed off what players can expect going into Dawntrail, including new gear and new end game content.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail will enter early access on June 28, 2024. The full release will arrive on July 5, 2024. It will be available on the Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox and PC.

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Tuesday, June 18, 2024 4:44 PM With many other players waiting to continue crafting and upgrading their bases in Pax Dei, finding resources in the wild can be particularly difficult.
