Last year, a growing trend saw AAA video game publishers offering early access to new games if you pre-ordered a pricey special edition version. I worried then that if some publishers were successful in locking games behind a ransom fee, many others would do the same in the future. And here we are, in 2024, and most…

When we talk about the post-apocalypse there are only two names that tend to come up - Fallout and Mad Max. The latter of these is enjoying a renaissance following two recent very well received movies and while not an official crossover, Once Human is getting a new event that appears to be very much inspired by it. So if you've ever fancied yourself a road warrior, it might be time to head into the game and hit the highway.

New space strategy game The Crust debuts to positive reviews

If games are especially good at one thing, it's testing players' ability to figure out survival methods in harsh environments. Strategy projects like Frostpunk, Homeworld, Against the Storm, and Manor Lords all take place in settings, whether stretches of unforgiving wilderness or the lifeless outer reaches of space, that demand careful planning. Their premise is a natural fit for the genre, lending an inherent drama to the logistical challenges of founding and taking care of groups of people. It also seems to be a popular one, given that new space strategy game The Crust, which takes place on the surface of the moon, is already attracting a healthy player base and positive reviews on Steam.

Blizzard will be making WoW tanks much less tanky in The War Within

Playing World of Warcraft as a tank is a tough proposition. You're the lynchpin of the entire group and if you should place an enemy in the wrong position, grab aggro from the wrong thing, or simply die - your team is looking at a wipe. That said, it has become a little easier in recent years with tanks being able to shrug off ever-increasing amounts of damage. Blizzard just announced that this is all about to change, with tanks becoming less tanky and more reliant on support.

Grab the HD version of strategy classic Stronghold for less than $2

Late last year saw the launch of a remastered version of the 2001 Stronghold in the form of Stronghold Definitive Edition. Though the work that creator FireFly Studios put into making the classic strategy game look and feel much more modern makes it a solid choice for players, the 2013 Stronghold HD is a slightly less overhauled — and more immediately nostalgic — version of the original that's well worth a look as well. Even better, anyone who's looking to pick up a genre standout that rivalled contemporaries like Starcraft, Warcraft 3, and Homeworld can do so for very cheap, with Stronghold HD currently discounted to less than $2 on Steam.

Grab AMD's fastest Ryzen X3D gaming CPU for its lowest price ever

AMD has been steadily slightly reducing the price of its current crop of 7000 series CPUs, but Amazon Prime Day has added an extra little discount on the company's top-tier chip. This AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D deal nets you the most powerful X3D chip the company makes for just $459.99, which is $240 cheaper than its MSRP at launch.

With features shared by several of the best gaming CPUs you can buy, the Ryzen 9 7950X packs in 16 cores and is boosted - particularly when it comes to gaming performance - by the addition of an extra 64MB of L3 cache that's attached right on top of one of the main chips. That's the part that sets AMD's X3D CPUs apart from its standard chips.

AMD's new Ryzen 5 9600X CPU just appeared on sale, and it's not cheap

Although AMD's new Ryzen 9000 CPUs aren't scheduled to be released until the end of July, one of them has already just appeared for sale on Amazon, possibly giving us an indication of pricing. The new six-core AMD Ryzen 5 9600X is listed for sale on the Canadian version of the site for a price of $475.51 CA, which works out at around $347 if you do a straight currency conversion.

This new CPU's predecessor, the Ryzen 5 7600X, currently has a spot on our guide to the best gaming CPU, but only because it's had a drop in price. When it first launched, it cost $299, which is a lot of money for a six-core processor. This AMD chip now goes for just $184.99, meaning the 9600X at the Amazon Canada price represents an 87.6% price increase, and we doubt it's going to be anywhere near 87.6% faster.

GTA 6 is going to dominate 2025. Nobody wants to go up against Rockstar's crime epic, and it's easy to see why.      Chained Echoes meets FTL in new strategy game Dead Weight

If there's one design decision that's bound to grab audience attention, it's strong pixel art visuals. Throwback RPG games like Chained Echoes or Sea of Stars, platformers like Celeste or Shovel Knight, and crafting or farming games like Stardew Valley and Terraria all look back to earlier eras for their aesthetics, and owe at least some of their success with players to that choice. It's also part of why the upcoming tactics project Dead Weight caught our attention when it was first announced, and why we're happy to see how the game plays now that it's just put out a Steam demo.

New RPG Yaoling: Mythical Journey is already beloved on Steam

Just released into Early Access, Yaoling: Mythical Journey is an RPG adventure with strategy elements and an absolutely beautiful art direction. Yaoling: Mythical Journey could be compared to Pokemon in the fact it involves catching the titular Yaolings and commanding them in battle, but simply calling it a Pokemon-like would be a disservice to its unique identity.

When is the new Blox Fruit update? Whether you're waiting for the right moment to start or need some new content to conquer, it can be hard to understand when a new Blox Fruits patch is on the horizon. Time your sessions around updates, and you're more likely to score some helpful freebies to boost you on your way to the top.

And if we just so happen to be in a bit of a Blox Fruits content drought with nothing new expected for a little while, there's still plenty more to play across the Roblox platform. For a familiar experience, King Legacy codes are always available to use. If DICE's Battlefield series lacks for one feature, it's surely the option to dig trenches. Properly dig them, I mean, not just waft them into existence with a wave of your magic trowel, a la Battlefield V. Think Minecraft, but with howitzers instead of Creepers. I have never been to war, but I do own several shovels, and let me tell you, if I ever hear artillery fire or even just dangerously raised voices round these parts, the first thing I will do is tunnel straight down.

Fuck it, I might do that if I read any negative comments on this news piece. Vex me not with your pestilent talk of "map balancing". Watch this trailer for Flying Squirrel's new FPS Over The Top WW1 instead. It abounds with trench-digging, and it looks like you can make some decent-sized craters, too.

Back in 2011, Robot Entertainment released tower defender Orcs Must Die!, adding an exclamation mark to spark some urgency and also, irritate anybody who has to write about video games for a living, though not as much as the absolute maniacs behind Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. Evidently, players did not sufficiently meet their demand for wanton Orc-massacring, for Robot were forced to release two sequels, which I personally would have titled Orcs Must Die!! and Orcs Must Die!!! or perhaps Orcs Must Die!!?, to indicate a mounting existential crisis.

Now, Robot have stepped things up by announcing Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap, a newly roguelite, four-player spin on the goblin-farming formula, whose subheading throws bumbling Orc murderers a bone by specifying that you might try building a trap of some kind, a deathtrap possibly. Please find below a suspiciously innocent trailer, which I promise you isn't covering a wall of arrow launchers or similar.

I increasingly judge Souls-adjacent games not by the height of their bosses or the depth of their dungeons, but the cleverness of their shortcuts, and Flintlock: Siege Of Dawn has my favourite shortcuts in an age. Rather than just being routes around to the other side of a barred door - though there are plenty such Lordrannish loops to find in this game - they consist of aerial chains of magic, purple triangles that suck you toward them when you hold a button. They lend vigour to a branching, faux-Napoleonic world that might otherwise be a collection of atmospheric strolls between bonfire-equivalents and fights defined by taut resourcing systems. They're idiot-proof grappling points from which you can launch yourself at another triangle, a ledgeful of upgrade materials, or a loitering musketeer who is in urgent need of a ground-pound.

Now you too can get one on the cheap, by way of a chunky Prime Day discount – and as if God himself was calling me a loser nerd, it's the significantly brawnier RTX 4060 model to boot.

Screenshot of Neuvillette in battle in Genshin Impact

When HoYoVerse announced the 4.8 Genshin Impact update was live, it also noted that a Neuvillette bug fix that nerfs the amount of damage he does in certain circumstances appeared among the latest changes. The developer also noted that every player received 100 Primogems as compensation for this bug.

Specifically, the Neuvillette nerf in Genshin Impact applies to his Charged Attack: Equitable Judgment. After charging up up and unleashing what is essentially a water cannon, it would be possible to spin the character around for a greater AOE effect. This has been present and normal for us since he debuted as a playable character on September 27, 2023

At the one minute mark of this Zhongli Unbreakable Shield video, you can see Neuvillette's range and speed ahead of 4.8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym1IZoT1b3s&ab_channel=ZhongliUnbreakableShield

And this Engineering Plastics video showed Neuvillette dealing 1.5 million in damage. (Spoiler alert, as this example shows the Everlasting Lord of Arcane Wisdom: Shouki no Kami, the Prodigal Sumeru boss fight.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMIA1XfYdEY&ab_channel=EngineeringPlastics

Here is the text from the full message sent out to players in Genshin Impact about the Charged Attack: Equitable Judgment fix.

"Dear Traveler,

There is an issue whereby Neuvillette could rotate at an unusually high speed when casting his Charged Attack, resulting in an abnormal attack range under specific circumstances. This issue has been fixed. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused in your gaming experience and have prepared the below compensation for you. Please make sure to claim it in time."

As for the Scope of Compensation notice in the official update notes, HoYoVerse noted,

"Bug Fix Compensation for the issue whereby Neuvillette could rotate at an unusually high speed when casting his Charged Attack, resulting in an abnormal attack range and other issue fix compensation: Travelers who have reached Adventure Rank 5 or above by 2024/07/17 06:00 (UTC+8)."

As for the 100 Primogems for the Neuvillette Genshin Impact bug fix, that is in every players' inbox. As long as you were at Adventure Rank 5 as of July 17, 2024, you can claim it. However, the announcement noted people should read and redeem that credit from their in-game mail by July 20, 2024.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Neuvillette's last rerun appeared in April 2024.

If you only want to buy the items alone, three things are available. There is an almost six-inch acrylic standee of Pekora in her new swimsuit, based on her new model. That costs $9.99. NieR Automata 2B and 9S ARTFX J figures by Kotobukiya

Kotobukiya revealed two new 1/8 scale ARTFX J figures based on 2B and 9S from the NieR Automata Ver1.1a anime. Pre-orders for both figures have also opened worldwide. Kotobukiya's own online shop is only applicable to those in Japan. However, people residing outside the country can place orders on other sites like AmiAmi, which supports worldwide shipping.

While both figures will look the best when paired together, Kotobukiya will sell them separately. Despite the difference in the figure bases, both products will have the same tax-inclusive MSRP of 25,300 yen (~$161.80).

The character figures will be accompanied by their respective Pods. Each set will also come with a swappable alternate unmasked head part that shows the characters' eyes as based on the anime version.

Here are some of the sample images for both figures, with a focus on comparisons between the masked and unmasked head variants:

The Ver1.1a anime versions of NieR Automata characters have been frequently used by numerous companies across Japan as models for their new figures. Earlier in July 2024, Proof revealed its own 1/7 scale static figures of 2B and 9S that it will release in December 2024. Just like Kotobukiya's ARTFX J, Proof's figures will also come with swappable unmasked head variants.

The 1/8 scale ARTFX J figure of the NieR Automata anime version of 2B will appear first in January 2025. The 9S figure will follow suit the month after in February 2025.

honkai star rail lingsha

HoYoVerse has released the key visual for Lingsha, who will be a new character in Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.5. She will be a 5-star Fire Abundance character.

Lingsha's real name is Dan Zhu and she is the new Cauldron Master of the Xianzhou Luofu's Alchemy Commission. She is, like Bailu and Dan Heng, a Vidyadhara. According to her character description, Lingsha uses incense to soothe others and has a sharp sense of smell, which she uses to diagnose her patients. In English, Whitney Holland voices Lingsha. Holland's past roles include Penny in My Time at Sandrock and Epona in Mythic Heroes. Her Japanese voice actress is Kaori Maeda. Maeda's previous roles include Shizuku in Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and Nice Nature in Umamusume. Finally, Lingsha's Chinese voice actress is Rao Zijun. persona 3 reload tracks

Atlus has announced that, as the third round of DLC for the Persona 3 Reload expansion pass, players will be able to listen to four tracks from the first two Persona games in the dungeons. These tracks will also be available in Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis, which will be available from September 10, 2024.

You can listen to the tracks here:

https://twitter.com/p_kouhou/status/1813393180772983025?s=61

The four DLC tracks are Reload versions of the Persona, Snow Queen, Time Castle, and Maya themes. In Reload, they sound much higher quality and feature some different instruments as well. Other DLC in the past include costumes, as well as the various music from Persona 4 The Golden and Persona 5 Royal.

Persona 3 Reload came out in February 2024 as the remake of Persona 3, which originally came out in 2006. It adapts the original story rather than Portable, though it adds a lot of QOL from FES, as well as the Episode Aigis epilogue. It was very well-received, with high scores from critics and users. As well, it is Atlus's fastest-selling game, selling over a million units in its first week.

Persona 3 Reload is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. Episode Aigis will come out on September 10, 2024.

Emio - The Smiling Man Is a Famicom Detective Club Game

Nintendo fully revealed Emio following teasers of a man wearing a paper bag with a smile on it, and it turns out it was part of a reveal for Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. This is the newest entry in the series of point-and-click adventure games, and it will come to the Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024.

While Emio - The Smiling Man carries the classic series' name name, it is an entirely new title. It is not a remake of a classic Famicom Detective Club title like the two Famicom Disk System entries. Once again, players work for the Utsugi Detective Agency as they deal with the possible return of an urban legend cold case when a new murder happens. People will go through the point-and-click adventure game searching for clues and answers.

Here is the reveal teaser from social media:

https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1813560122549137533

Nintendo also shared a video from Producer Yoshio Sakamoto discussing the entry:

The first two games in the series were remade by Mages for the Nintendo Switch and released in 2021. Those are Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behindand The Missing Heir. It is unknown if Mages is behind the new entry.

Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club will come to the Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024.

nintendo world championships nes edition review

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition wears its inspiration in its title. It seeks to capture the nostalgia for the competitions from over 30 years ago! And perhaps mostly the legacy built after the fact by collectors and communities wishing they weren't just one-offs and actively building around that old branding.

The aesthetics of the game work really well! The soundtrack and backgrounds really remind us of The Wizard, which is absolutely correct for this package. The gameplay of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition appears to build on the framework of NES Remix, the Wii U and 3DS collection of similar challenges. There are bite-sized and… slightly larger but still bite-sized gameplay segments from 13 games: Super Mario Bros 1, 2, Lost Levels and 3; Zelda 1 and 2; Metroid; Donkey Kong; Kid Icarus; Excitebike; Ice Climber; Balloon Fight; and Kirby's Adventure.

Speedrun Mode, the one mode you can play offline, is extremely like NES Remix, with escalating challenges to unlock and coins to collect to do that. They start at the shortest and simplest "Normal" ones, and go all the way through Hard, Master and Legend. Master and Legend challenges aren't necessarily the hardest to complete, but they are the longer and more interesting ones, and perhaps there are many more things you'd need to get exactly right to get a top time. There are even Nintendo Power-like strategy tips for these final ones, and these add to the atmosphere and are a nice touch.

nintendo world championships nes edition review
Screenshot by Siliconera

Of course, the selling point of NES Remix was the, well, remix part, and this release has none of that. The game segments here are fully ones you could experience before. Instead, it's built around online competition. The two online modes are World Championships, which gives you a weekly playlist of five challenges, and Survival Mode, which collects ghost data to create a 99-like battle royale spin.

The World Championships mode of the game is understandably intended as the centerpiece. Each week, you play five challenges and compete for the best times on leaderboards. Unfortunately for the experience, it deviates from the original Nintendo World Championships formula in one big way: you can replay it as many times as you want, and each part is tackled separately. You don't chain together challenges, and there are no interesting score strategies. It boils down to "do these five again, just like you've done before." Just you have to log on every week.

Survival Mode also recycles those challenges, this time formatting it as a battle royale-like competition. That said, like we mentioned, it uses ghost data! So it's just an artificial way to make the normal speedrunning look different. You'll take on three of the challenges — at least in the pre-release review period, these were identical to the World Championships ones for the week — and winning is a combination of doing well and happening upon the ghost data and event order that makes the finals most winnable. Half the "players" are eliminated each round, so early ones are more forgiving. So maybe keep entering and quitting until your weakest one is first, to save time? To the game's credit, your performances in these two online modes do update your best times for Speedrun Mode, which is something.

nintendo world championships nes edition review
Screenshot by Siliconera

You don't want to chase slightly better times through repetition? Truly the game's not for you. It's geared exclusively toward this sort of play, and it's unapologetic about it. As an example, Kirby's Adventure is a game about enjoying power-ups and creative solutions. Many of its included challenges? They're no-power-up boss time challenges. We're well-documented Kirby fans, and we're not having fun playing the Kirby parts here! It works better for a game like Balloon Fight, but the true genres for this sort of thing don't feel represented. There's no Tetris, even as a nod to the original competition, nor do we see something like Dr. Mario here as a substitute. Scrolling shooters would also be good to see, or white-knuckle games like Punch-Out!! and such.

The game really wants you to play on TV, and with an audience. The interface is more for a spectator than a player, for better and worse. If you play by yourself, especially on a handheld screen, your actual view of a given game is only about a quarter of your display. The local multiplayer option, Party Mode, lets you play with up to eight players locally at the same time. And hey, this could be fun with a group?

Nintendo has been exceedingly clear that full NES games are not part of the Nintendo World Championships package. But, frankly, why not? We know that all of these titles are part of the Nintendo Switch Online offering, so they're available to play, but what if there were built-in speedrunning milestones with split times, verified leaderboards and ghost data? This would be extra value, and still fit within the premise. If this project started life as one of the annual Nintendo Switch Online freebies, we'd believe it. With its focus on online play and general depth of content, it fits better beside Tetris 99 than Tears of the Kingdom.

perhaps the one genuinely good feature in the game
Screenshot by Siliconera

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a release held together by sentiment and atmosphere, partly because that aspect of the game is so good and partly because the remainder of the game is so devoid of merit. Like NES Remix before it, it lives in a liminal space between viable gameplay ideas. If it were supposed to be a punishing speedrunning challenge, it would give players one try in the weekly championship and offer more long events. If it were a WarioWare-like fun time, it'd have a faster pace and a lot more variety. If it were a weekly Nintendo Switch Online diversion, it'd be a lower-commitment free download built around a real-time experience. And, well, it's none of those.
