Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 review - great combat, bland missions

Warhammer 40k is overwhelming. The details of its universe have accrued over decades into something that seems unapproachably huge. It's still possible, though, to appreciate the surface elements of its aesthetic - to be compelled by the over-the-top charms of its towering and glowering armored soldiers, the candle-lit majesty of its gothic sci-fi structures, and its unabashedly grim vision of a far future characterized by never-ending war. This has made Warhammer 40k games an appealing proposition for the casual observer. Dipping a toe into the setting through a throwback shooter like Boltgun or the Dawn of War strategy series is easier than finding any other entry point. Spending a dozen or so hours soaking up its style and fiction is a good way to enjoy what 40k offers without needing to get fully invested. Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 is, theoretically at least, another compelling tour of this setting for the Warhammer curious.

Best Black Ops 6 LR 7.62 loadout

What is the best Black Ops 6 LR 7.62 loadout? Sniping in Call of Duty can be a tricky thing to get right; sniper rifles often have extreme damage, but require a lot of skill to operate effectively. If you miss your shot against skilled players, you'll likely find yourself on the wrong end of a kill screen. Nikhil Murthy's Syphilisation is a "postcolonial 4X game", which might sound like a contradiction in terms. While approaches to 4X and grand strategy vary hugely between games, factions and players, the genre as a whole is firmly wedded to imperial conquest, both structurally and at the level of narrative aspects and set-dressing. Many 4X games are triumphal re-enactments of specific periods of colonial settlement and expansion. All of which is to say that Syphilisation is fascinating. It's a reworking of the genre which dismantles and reconstructs concepts such as diplomacy, research and production. It's also just left early access - find more details and a playthrough video below.

It's been 13 years since the first Space Marine came out. While it wasn't outstanding in the grander landscape of gaming, enough Warhammer 40K fans seem to have cherished the escapades of bulky blue boltgunner Demetrian Titus for the action game to merit a sequel a decade later. It left its story on something of a cliffhanger, with said hero being dragged away to face untold tortures by the Inquisition, the most zealous sect of this preternaturally paranoid sci-fi universe. Today, Titus is free again. Free to stomp towards hordes of alien foes, blast them with a plasma incinerator, and shred the stragglers with a chainsaw sword. Space Marine 2 is an often-satisfying scrapper that has me convinced of 40K's merit as a crafting ground for excellent-looking environments and creatures, even if I'm not particularly moved by the bland character of Titus and his fellow Ultramarines.

Warner Bros have released the first trailer for Vertigo and Legendary's Minecraft movie, the long-awaited or possibly, long-dreaded adaptation of Mojang's industry-straddling block-builder. Quick disclosure: I worked with Mojang and Microsoft on a book about Minecraft's first 15 years, shortly before joining Rock Paper Shotgun. As such, I am now obliged by the eternal laws of journalistic accountability to state that anything Minecraft-related is rubbish. But even if that weren't the case, I would describe this as pretty dismal.

Fields of Mistria Clip Shows How to Set Repeated Tool Use Button in Controls

NPC Studio shared a quick update to remind Fields of Mistria players that the game supports a repeated tool use button in its controls and offered a clip showing how to implement it in-game. The gif walks through the feature, found in the Settings menu, and shows how the change causes it to work in the field.

The clip begins by showing what the normal use tool action looks like in Fields of Mistria. From there, the gif goes into the Controls section in Settings. That's where someone can change the key bindings in-game. Between Use Tool (Charged) and Cast Pinned Spill is a Use Tool (Repeated) control option in Fields of Mistria, which is blank by default. In the example, that action is then mapped to the right mouse button. To show the difference, the gif then shows the Use Tool (Repeated) control option being used to break up a rock in the field.

Here's the full clip showing how to set up the repeated tool use control option in Fields of Mistria.

https://twitter.com/FieldsofMistria/status/1831355739849285681

Since launch, NPC Studio mainly uses social media to show off tips for controls, gameplay, or even decorating options. It also confirmed when the game became Steam Deck verified there, as well as when the developers went on a brief break before starting work on the Q4 2024 update.

Fields of Mistria is in early access on PCs, and the 1.0 version is expected to launch in 2025.

Huge Dragon Ball FighterZ Balance Patch Covers All 44 Characters

Bandai Namco released the 1.38 Dragon Ball FighterZ balance patch on almost every platform on September 4, 2024, and the changes affect all 24 base game and 20 DLC characters. It is available on almost every system, though there is no release window for the Switch version yet.

The full 1.38 patch notes for Dragon Ball FighterZ is 21 pages long. As such, Bandai Namco made it available as a pdf online for people to view and download. Some of the changes are universal. For example, now everyone can be hit by anti air attacks, when in the past some attacks were described as "invincible." If you use a Special Move during a Sparking Blast, you can use a Special Move or Super Dash. The cooldown for the C Type Z Assist is also longer going forward.

As for the characters who are affected by the balance changes in the new Dragon Ball FighterZ patch, some fighters are affected more than others. For example, there are 14 alterations in the Goku (Ultra Instinct) section. Others may not experience as many differences between past patches and this one. So in the case of Vegeta, there are only six changes to his moveset. It seems like, on average, most characters ended up experiencing between 9-11 changes in the update.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is available on the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. The new 1.38 patch is immediately available on every platform except the Switch now.

You Can Turn Off the UI, Turn on 90s Filter in Silent Hill 2 Remake

Konami and Bloober Team announced that people looking to call back to the original Silent Hill 2 experience or go with a more immersive experience will be able to turn off the game's UI or use an optional 90s filter in the remake. Bloober also shared a brief trailer on social media that highlighted both of the features in-action.

The latest Silent Hill 2 remake trailer mainly focuses on what the game looks like if we turn the UI off. We can more completely see the area around James. Also, though it is only a brief aside, we can see how James will turn his head toward the right when one of the monsters in the town rises up off the ground and continues looking at it as the person playing runs past it. Bloober noted that, alongside audio and visual cues, will provide insight into notable features around a person if the UI is off.

As for the 90s Silent Hill 2 remake filter, it is designed to make it look more like the original PS2 game. In the sample trailer, we can see some of the film grain effects in action with that option.

Here's the latest Silent Hill 2 teaser trailer from Bloober.

https://twitter.com/BlooberTeam/status/1831331610291012035

We've seen quite a bit of gameplay for the game throughout 2024, with one of the first trailers showing up in January. Additional interviews also talked about efforts made to make the game feel more like the original release.

The Silent Hill 2 remake will appear on the PS5 and Windows PC on October 8, 2024.

Pokemon Go Dynamax

Dynamax Pokemon are coming to Pokemon Go as part of the latest season. Select Pokemon will be able to participate in unique Max Battles from September 10-15, 2024.

Dynamax is the latest unique mechanic from the main games to make an appearance in Pokemon Go. These battles featuring gigantic Pokemon will appear on special stops throughout the game. Players can use a new item known as Max Particles to take part in Max Battles and unlock Max Moves. In addition, there will be a special research event focused on Dynamax, where players can earn max Particles and a Dynamax band for your trainer to wear.

The new mechanic will debut with a short event from September 10-15, 2024, where five Pokemon will appear in special Max Battles. These include the gen 1 starters – Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle – along with Skwovet and Wooloo. All five Pokemon and their evolutions can be Dynamaxed. It's unclear if other Pokémon will be able to Dynamax, and it's not clear if there will be further events around the mechanic after its closing date.

Here's the announcement tweet, which also includes a brief video and new song for the game.

https://twitter.com/PokemonGoApp/status/1831316529650036908

Pokemon GO Max Battles will also feature a new arrangement of the Dynamax battle theme taken from Pokémon Sword and Shield. This was made by Junichi Masuda, who has been producing music for the series since the first Pokémon games.

While Dynamax is a new feature to Pokemon GO, it previously appeared in Pokemon Sword and Shield. It allowed players to increase the size and strength of their Pokemon in certain battles, including Gym Battles. Some Pokemon had special Gigantamax forms that changed their appearance, although these forms don't appear to be included in Pokemon GO just yet. It's not the first of these kinds of mechanics to be added to the game, as Mega Evolutions from Pokemon X and Y have also appeared.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android devices, and the Dynamax event will run from September 10-15, 2024.

See One Piece Luffy and Boa Hancock Variable Action Heroes Figures

MegaHouse announced that 1.5 versions of Monkey D. Luffy and Boa Hancock will join the One Piece Variable Action Heroes figure line in February 2025. He will cost 10,450円 (~$72), while she will be 10,890円 (~$75)

The two figures both come with multiple faces and extra parts. So Boa has four face plates, while Luffy comes with three. However, Luffy also includes an actual fabric cape people can pose around him and his hat. Since Boa doesn't have a cape or hat, her additional part is the heart effect like the one that appears when she uses her Love-Love Fruit ability.

Here are the initial photos of both 1.5 versions of the One Piece Luffy and Boa Hancock figures MegaHouse shared with us. While there are none of the two side-by-side to compare heights, the Luffy one is slightly shorter. He stands at 165mm (~6.5in), while she is 190mm tall (~7.5in).

These aren't the only 1.5 versions of Variable Action Heroes characters from the series on the way. In June 2024, MegaHouse announced a new version of Shanks. Like Luffy, he comes with a fabric cape.

The MegaHouse Monkey D. Luffy and Boa Hancock will join the One Piece Variable Action Heroes figures will appear in Japan in February 2025, and they are expected to launch worldwide after that. The first season of thelive-action adaptation is on Netflix now, with season 2 on the way. The anime is on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan.

Review: Castlevania Dominus Collection Filled With Essential Games

I miss Castlevania games. I'd love to see an entirely new one. But failing that, I'm also incredibly excited when Konami remembers that people would really like a chance to return to older installments. When it turned out Castlevania Dominus Collection ended up being a Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase shadowdrop, I was thrilled at the prospect of playing three beloved older games on the Switch alongside a new remake of Haunted Castle. Turns out, the DS games hold up incredibly well, and Haunted Castle Revisited is an absolute delightful revival of a game most people probably didn't get to play.

With the four games in the collection, we're getting glimpses back at different moments in Castlevania history. Chronologically speaking, and in terms of actual age, Haunted Castle's events come first. Simon Belmont heads off to confront Dracula after his wife is kidnapped. From there, we see Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia's events. Since there are no Belmonts present, the titular order intended to use the Dominus glyph against Dracula should he return. However, when one of two students steal the three of them, an amnesiac Shanoa must pursue him and retrieve them for her mentor and to save kidnapped citizens. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is another entry without a Belmont, with Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin heading to Dracula's castle to face another vampire named Brauner who moved into the more famous vampire's old haunt. Meanwhile, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow takes us into the future with Soma Cruz, the reincarnation of Dracula, dealing with a cult trying to turn him into Dracula.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL-41nNH1fk

While there are unique mechanics in each one, the three Castlevania DS games in Dominus Collection play similarly. In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, we're heading to the cult's mansion and journeying through it. As Soma is the hero, his ability to absorb enemy souls is the method of getting stronger, unlocking new abilities, and gaining new types of attacks. With Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, we head into paintings to visit different realms to deal with bosses within and seal them away, and there are often puzzles or situations where switching between Jonathan and Charlotte is needed to progress. In Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, we have elements of both previous games present, as Shanoa gains new abilities and attacks by absorbing glyphs found or dropped by enemies in a fashion similar to Soma, but she's also going across a region and traversing smaller spaces instead of a single, giant mansion.

My first concern when I heard about the Castlevania Dominus Collection is how well it would work on a console like the Switch when Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia were all Nintendo DS entries. Well, it works flawlessly. Which I should have expected, considering M2 was involved in the process. On the Switch especially, it is fantastic. The main "action" appears in a larger screen on the left, while on the right you have two additional screens constantly showing the map and character details. It's absolutely fantastic to have all this information on-hand at once. And if there were moments that involved touchscreen functionality, there are either now button inputs or an option to use the Switch touchscreen or buttons to make up for those moments.

I also felt like Castlevania Dominus Collection is a perfect example of including a game for someone at every skill level while also showing the progression of the handheld entries in the series. I feel like Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin can be quite accommodating, perhaps even more so than I remembered, due to the nature of the second character and the structure. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is for someone more accustomed to the series and interested in perhaps mastering and finding every soul. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia can be far more challenging than the other entries in this collection, due the way Shanoa's glyphs work, the MP needed to use them, and the decisions you need to make to keep her alive when first starting out. Meanwhile, if you play them in the order they released (Dawn of Sorrow in 2005, Portrait of Ruin in 2006, and Order of Ecclesia in 2008), we can see the progress in terms of character designs, castle design, gameplay, and execution. So we can see Dawn of Sorrow's souls influence on Ecclesia's glyphs. Likewise, we can see how the paintings and smaller locations in Portrait of Ruin perhaps affected Order of Ecclesia's locations.

Simply put, the three existing games part of the Castlevania Dominus Collection on the Switch? It's absolutely fantastic. All of them are great. They're fantastic fun, no matter which order you play them in. It's a wonderful deal.

As for Haunted Castle Revisited, it's just a lovely surprise. My experience with it is fairly fleeting, as I've only played it a few times when visiting Galloping Ghost Arcade. It retains much of what we remember from the original. There are six stages which you must get through in a timely fashion, with bosses at the end of each one. However, I found it felt a little more forgiving and like a traditional Castlevania experiences in some ways. For example, I found chickens to restore health sometimes, which was especially helpful in the first two stages as I got reacquainted with the title and last level. You can also upgrade the whip and get sub-weapons, which helps with additional tactics when facing foes. Not to mention it looks absolutely fantastic, especially when you play the also-included original Haunted Castle to compare.

Basically, Castlevania Dominus Collection is another fantastic compilation of Castlevania games. The three DS titles returning here are all wonderful games in their own ways, and they play quite well on the Switch thanks to M2's efforts. Haunted Castle and Haunted Castle Revisited feel like a fun bonus and a way to bring the Belmonts into a collection that otherwise focuses on other heroes fighting Dracula and his forces. It's a worthwhile bundle of titles, especially on the Switch.

Castlevania Dominus Collection is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC
