The Sims 5 Project Rene to get small playtest very soon, EA confirms

Despite a long period of speculation, fans haven't really been able to put much together about The Sims 5. We know that it's most likely being developed under the working title Project Rene, but other than that and a few bits and pieces here and there, things have been pretty thin on the ground. That may be about to change, as EA has posted a blog article detailing what's next for the series and a invite-only playtest for Project Rene will be kicking off sooner, rather than later.

Skate 4 release date estimate, gameplay, and all the latest news

When is the Skate 4 release date? While we've seen plenty of early footage of Skate 4 already, EA's upcoming Skate revival is a rare case of a triple-A studio showing off very early in-development footage of a game. Though we've seen plenty of Skate 4, we can also clearly see it's not ready yet. It's already been over a decade since the last Skate game, so we can hold on a little longer.

The first Skate was among the most innovative skateboard games around, from its analog control scheme and semi open-world game structure to its more realistic, less edgy representation of the skating scene. The development team behind Skate 3 was disbanded after its28 bombarding EA message boards with questions about the series and its potential return ever since. Now, the team is very open about the development process for Skate 4, so here's what we know so far.

Ex-Riot and Ubisoft devs' new anime game is JRPG Diablo

When I forwarded the press release for Starlight Re:Volver to my esteemed PCGamesN colleagues, deputy news editor Ed Smith informed me that it "looks very you." Now, my credits include reviewing Diablo 4 and delving deep into the plague-ridden world of A Plague Tale: Requiem - I'm drawn to dark, twisted worlds overrun with hellspawn and drenched in blood. But, what Ed also knows is that I'm a sucker for a good ol' bright pink skin, and I absolutely adore that anime aesthetic - thankfully, Starlight Re:Volver blends those two worlds together, and it does, in fact, look very me.

AMD's new AI frame gen tech could revolutionize the Steam Deck 2

AMD is going all-in on artificial intelligence to power its new frame-generation tech, with the hope of boosting the frame rates and battery life of handheld devices such as the Steam Deck. AMD FSR 4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) will be AMD's fourth release of the technology designed to help boost frame rates in games.

AMD revealed that it made the switch internally to focus on an AI-based approach "nine to 12 months ago," because the original FSR technology wasn't "where the future is going" for gamers. The company continues to battle it out against Nvidia's dominance of the GPU market, and while AMD's own chips are regularly used in some of the best graphics cards available, Nvidia has a big headstart when it comes to AI-based gaming tech.

Dead Rising Remaster review - deeply flawed sandbox game is good now

From Resident Evil to Silent Hill 2, Age of Empires to Assassin's Creed 3, Command and Conquer, and myriad others; during the last decade, developers have done incredibly well out of remastering and remaking their most beloved legacy works. At the worst of times, these efforts can't help but feel cynical - naked attempts to re-profiteer from games that, although aged (at least by the consumerist, amnesiac standards of the gaming business) are still perfectly good. The Remakaissance becomes, by this interpretation, a craven appeal to misplaced nostalgia, with the vicarious effect of editing and erasing videogame history. On the contrary, the Dead Rising remaster feels like an example of where games, even if they are less than 20 years old, might benefit from a second draft. It achieves more than preserving the essence and energy of the original game. It heightens it, and enables you to experience it in more direct and concentrated form.

The 12 best soulslike games in 2024

What are the best soulslike games? An off-shoot of action RPGs, the defining principles of this ever-growing subgenre first emerged in FromSoftware's Demon's Souls back in 2009. However, it took the release of its spiritual successor two years later to really light a fire under fans. Dark Souls is a landmark game in many respects, but the soulslike genre is its greatest legacy.

While efforts have been made to diversify soulslike games in recent years, patience in the face of adversity remains the focal point. Characterized by punishing stamina-based combat, risk-reward currency systems, and challenging bosses, victory leads to progression through rich worlds that capture a dark fantasy game aesthetic. Whether you're a newcomer who's not sure where to start or an RPG game veteran looking for a new challenge, we've got the very best soulslikes on PC you can play right now.

Both Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online now appear to have BattlEye anti-cheat. Players are reporting the software on start-up, and it looks as though Rockstar has added the tool to the Steam backend. Rockstar has also already had to deal with a major remote hacker problem in GTA last year, so implementing BattlEye should help with the issue.

I really wanted to like action adventure The Plucky Squire more than I do now, having given its charming 2D to 3D platforming a proper whirl. Yes, it's lovely to look at. Yes, hopping out of a storybook and making friends with an illustration on a coffee mug is cool. And yes, everyone can have a mildly fun time with its puzzles and fights. But that's the problem: who is everyone? At first I thought, "This game is for young kids and that's fine!", given its relative simplicity. Then I hit some puzzles and thought, "Ain't no kid figuring this out".

Then it hit me. It struggles to balance the fine line between being approachable for tiny tots and layered enough for people who've graduated from "goo goo ga ga" to "oo oo aa aa my back hurts". And that's down to how plucky you're allowed to squire at any given time, because it can be surprisingly limited and, sadly, a bit underwhelming.

You can't travel back to the 1980s. But what if I told you it was possible to gently warp your memories of that time? UFO 50 is a kart of 50 games that once existed for an old computer system, all lovingly restored by a gang of coders. The old console, of course, is a fiction. The LX-I never existed. But it's a fun pseudo-history against which to create a grab bag of small games (some throwaway, others mighty) all designed with a distinct 80s look. It's an exercise in adhering to an aesthetic. Like an oil painter working with a limited range of colours, the developers of this bundle have stuck to a 32-bit equivalent of the Zorn palette. Yet play a little of each game, and you start to sense the smirk of chronos. These games aren't stuck in the past, but they are enjoying a holiday there.

Having played the opening hour of Altus' Metaphor: ReFantazio – now mere weeks away from its October 11th launch – I think it's high time to correct a games previewing injustice. Why is every blockbuster video game now some kind of live service game? Speaking as a clueless idiot, the explanation I find most convincing is that it's an attempt to bridge the gap between the returns publishers want from video games, versus how much we're able or willing to pay upfront. "Triple-A" projects now cost exorbitant sums to develop, partly thanks to wider economic inflation, but also because publishers have spent decades teaching players that every sequel has to be More and Shinier. Premium game prices have not risen in proportion, and investors want growth, as they do.

Strange Scaffold's newly released FPS I Am Your Beast is very fun for quite a few reasons, but chief among them is a deep appreciation for the poetry of good videogame violence. I'm not using the big P word just to throw out an overly worthy comparison to something we might associate with craft or beauty, but as a nod toward the game's playful application of what I previously called 'a euphoric splurge of murderous game verbiage' one morning where I had clearly eaten my wordy Weetabix. The way its hurled knives and curb stomps and inexplicable decapitations flow together have an assonant, almost Suessian quality to them.

But it's also, well, just a bit like Mad Libs. You play as Harding, a man who's mythical lethality is established very early on. The showing is there in the moment to moment, but the telling is conveyed through cute tricks like how everyone you meet is so deeply afraid of Harding that they loudly keep track of exactly what weapon he's holding at all times. The Mad Libs comes in through the fact that you can draw Harding a route between A and B, and it's a given that multiple heads are going to come unstuck from necks along the way. You're sort of just casually filling in the verbs that seem the most fun to you in the moment. One of the verbs is 'hornet'. Hornet is a verb now.

Developers Proletariat, Inc announced plans to yank the servers back in August 2022 in the course of being acquired by Activision Blizzard, bringing an end to many happy hours spent skating on conjured ice ramps and hurling boulders around like bunny rabbits. Yes, I am the kind of wizard who hurls a bunny rabbit, if there are no boulders to spare.

Happily, it transpires that Proletariat have resurrected their creation and handed it over to posterity in the shape of a free standalone Community Version, available on Itch.io. You'll need to host your own server or join another group if you want to play multiplayer, but all the same, this is a lovely gift and one I'm delighted to transmit unto you, the active and efficient Magenauts of Rockus Paperus Shottegonne.

Having shot up the near-future in Battlefield 2042, DICE and EA are using a modern-day setting with the next instalment of their military FPS series. According to EA studios group general manager and Respawn chief Vince Zampella, the new, currently untitled shooter will be one of those "back to basics" sequels that tries to rebottle the lightning of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 - these being the "peak" Battlefield games, in Zampella's view.

I am sure gladiator roguelike RPG We Who Are About To Die's latest update is very nice, and its accompanying 30% celebratory discount even nicer. You can find the full patch notes here, and I'd be interested to hear how significant they are from the more fascina-pilled among you. They mean nothing to me, however, because We Who Are About To Die has been taunting me from my wishlist since it launched in early access a few years back. Well, no more. Throw me to the lions! Oh, this one has a Steam demo in its mouth. Great stuff.

ECHOSTASIS is the third entry in Enigma's Studio's horror trilogy, and it's one of the more interesting games I've played this year. There's a demo on Steam, and you should grab it if you're interested, since everything I have to say about it is going to be a spoiler of some kind. I'll attempt a brief description below, but a lot of the fun here is discovering how all its parts fit together, and how even its more prosaic game conventions are defamiliarised through a spooky, static-drenched ensorcellment.

Review: Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Is Timeless

It is difficult to believe that Dead Rising is 18 years old at this point. It's not just because the recent Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster makes the game look gorgeous, all while retaining the style and aesthetic of the original. For an 18-year-old game, the gameplay loop and various zombie-killing and photography mechanics feel as fresh now as they did back on the Xbox 360.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster opens up with photojournalist Frank West traveling by helicopter to the quaint town of Willamette, Colorado. He intends to cover breaking news of the rumored riots occurring at the town. Upon his arrival, Frank witnesses some strange violent scenes, but encounters no riots. He discovers that the reason behind no information coming out of the town is a military quarantine put in place by the US National Guard. After making a deal with his pilot, Frank descends on the helipad of the Willamette Parkview Mall, with only 72 hours to find out the truth and be the first to get his hands on the scoop. It doesn't take long until a horde of zombies breaks into the shopping mall, attacking anyone and everyone in sight. With both his life and the truth on the line, Frank takes it upon himself to help anyone he can, maybe take advantage of the situation, and snap a few photos that might look nice on his Pulitzer-winning story.

Initially, Frank doesn't come off as a nice person. He starts as a self-interested and aloof man that's only in Willamette to further his career at the expense of other people's suffering. It is only through witnessing the horrors brought upon by the zombies and the people behind the outbreak that he steps into an active role helping the survivors of the shopping mall, and even makes friends with the DHS agents working the case. Even though some of the psychopath boss characters might come off as goofy or comedic, most of them are treated with a degree of understanding and are rarely used as the butt of the joke.

It is usually in the aftermath of the fights that Frank gets to see how the sustained trauma and stress of the zombie outbreak has affected these people, disrupting their lives in drastic ways and making them hold onto extreme and distorted versions of reality in order to cope with the circumstances. While Dead Rising is a comedy horror game, the game takes the subject matter and its characters seriously. The first game in the series is particularly poignant in the way it lays out a critique of rampant capitalist consumerism and its relationship with military imperialism, particularly regarding to America.

The gameplay is where most of the comedy shines through. During the course of the 3-day story mode, Frank needs to balance rescuing survivors, fighting zombies, taking photos, and completing each main case. Doing so will provide with Prestige Points (PP) that increase his overall level and unlock different stat upgrades and skills. The level up rewards are somewhat randomized, with some being available at the lower level pools and some available on higher levels. Escorting survivors has been noticeably improved from the original game, with the companion AI being much better at evading zombies and following Frank. There's still some level of friction when helping friendly NPCs, but it's part of what makes playing Dead Rising thrilling. The survivor escort quests in general have received an overhaul, with characters having favorite items and becoming more responsive and better at following Frank if you give them the weapons or food they enjoy. NPCs can also offer hints, point to hidden PP photo ops, and even tell where secret weapon stashes are.

There are countless ways to kill zombies in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. From a variety of more traditional melee weaponry and guns to sports equipment, home appliances, and even benches and anything in the environment that Frank can interact with. Combat is as simple as picking up a weapon and whacking a zombie until it stops moving, which can take from a single hit to a few depending on the effectiveness of your tool. One of the most notable quality of life changes in the remaster is the inclusion of an updated control scheme. While the original 2006 game is great, it doesn't control as smooth as some might remember. The modern controls make Dead Rising feel amazing. Special moves are mapped to the right bumper and a face button press, and the zombie grab reaction is assigned to the face buttons.

However, killing zombies isn't all there is to life. As a journalist, Frank also needs to stay on top of his game and take photos of anything and everything that might offer some value in his story. This means striking images of drama, brutality, horror, or comedic outtakes. It's important to note that the erotica genre is missing from the Deluxe Remaster. However, this isn't a massive loss and it doesn't meaningfully change the way the photo mechanics works. New to this remaster are also the different camera upgrades are available throughout the mall. Some include a flash option as well as depth of field settings, and they are a neat addition.

Another new addition to Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is an expanded dub. Now Frank and every NPC speaks during gameplay and side missions. Although this comes with a downside. The original English voice cast has been replaced by a new one. Terence J. Rotolo doesn't return as Frank's voice actor. I generally liked Jas Patrick as Frank, even though some of Frank's most iconic lines sound a bit off coming from someone different. The iconic licensed music tracks return to DRDR with an option for streamer mode that disables them to avoid copyright issues.

On a final note, RE Engine makes Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster look beautiful. The lighting in particular has seen a massive upgrade compared to the original game, which looked flatter in comparison. It is clear by looking at both games side by side that there has been a massive upgrade. However, the new remaster left me convinced that the this is how the original game looked liked back in 2006. The new character models are fantastic, and while Frank doesn't look exactly the same and his new design ages him a bit, I think he looks the part. In fact, I'd say that he looks exactly how his original promotional design depicts him.

Dead Rising was great in 2006 and it continues to be great as Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The tension of going through the main story cases, escorting survivors to safety, and trying to complete all side objectives all while managing your in-game countdown is as exhilarating as it was 18 years ago. Perhaps the most impressive thing this new remaster achieves is making me believe that this is how the original 2006 game played. The QoL additions are a game changer and I can't imagine going back to the original control scheme. Unfortunately, some characters in the new English dub don't sound as good as the original cast. On the brighter side, that is probably the only sore point I can find in the remaster.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will release on September 19, 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via Steam.

Final Fantasy XVI Timeline FFXVI Ultimania PS5 Version of Final Fantasy XVI Broken After System Update

Square Enix announced that it is aware of the fact that Final Fantasy XVI is now broken on the PS5, following Sony releasing a system update on September 12, 2024. This is a worldwide issue, with both the English and Japanese social media accounts announcing the issue.

Neither announcement goes into exact details about what people are experiencing if they try to play Final Fantasy XVI after the system update. Square Enix only referenced the crashes and graphical issues. It also did confirm that this seems to be tied to the update and it is working directly with Sony to find a fix for the problems. There's no timeline for when it could be repaired.

While Square Enix didn't share any details, people online have been showing what's going on in the game following that update. For example, Liligum9 on X shared a video showing the graphical glitches and Clive suddenly going bald.

sanrio mahjong soul

Yostar announced that Mahjong Soul will have a collaboration with Sanrio. The event will start on September 25, 2024, then run until October 16, 2024. It will feature the usual suspects of Hello Kitty, Kuromi, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

There's not a lot of information as of yet. The official Mahjong Soul X (formerly known as Twitter) account only announced that starting date for the event, as well as the four mentioned mascots. However, it's highly likely that they will appear as playable characters. In previous collaborations, Mahjong Soul added characters like Ai Hayasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War), Yumeko Jabami (Kakegurui), and Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass). So it's not out of the question.

As some of the most popular mascots in Sanrio, it's little surprise that Hello Kitty, Kuromi, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll would be the ones appearing in the Mahjong Soul crossover. They were among the ones who appeared in the McDonald's Yu-Gi-Oh happy meal collaboration, for example.

Mahjong Soul first came out in China in 2018 before appearing worldwide in 2019. It is a free browser and mobile game in which you play riichi mahjong. Though the game itself is pretty much mahjong, there was an anime series for it in 2022, and then an original net animation in 2024.

Mahjong Soul is readily available on mobile devices and in web browsers. The Sanrio collaboration will begin in Mahjong Soul from September 25 and it'll run until October 16, 2024.
