We're nine months through 2024 now, and this year has carried over two significant trends for the video game industry from 2023 into 2024: a lot of excellent games are coming out, and, unfortunately, the people who make them are suffering.      When is DBD Chaos Shuffle back next?

When is Chaos Shuffle back in DBD? While our vanilla live-service games still have us coming back time and again, there's nothing like a good limited-time modifier to stop things getting stale. When it comes to Dead by Daylight, one of the best modes for shaking things up is Chaos Shuffle, which places you into each match with a loadout of completely random perks.

Dead by Daylight perks are among the best things to give you the edge in the multiplayer game, and choosing just the rights ones - whether you play as a DBD killer or survivor - can turn the game around. Some perks have great synergy with others, some help you survive or kill, and others can improve or impede teamwork. It's usually essential that you plan your perfect loadout, so going into a match with completely random perks can have a devastating impact. That's what Chaos Shuffle is all about, and we can't wait for it to return.

Endzone 2 is like a strategy game version of Fallout, and just got a big update

Imagine you're Mr. House from Fallout New Vegas, safely tucked away in the basement of the Lucky 38, silently influencing the events of the wasteland. You have a settlement to protect. You always want to expand and consolidate your power. This, in essence, is the experience of playing Endzone 2, a post-apocalyptic strategy game where it's your job to guide a resurgent civilization from the rubble of global annihilation back to prosperity. Like Frostpunk, you're pressured by the demands of basic survival. But there's also a hint of Cities Skylines, as you grow your townships outward and create complex transit and trade routes. At the same time, Endzone 2 is a unique take on the city builder and strategy genres, and if you haven't played it so far, the new update is a perfect excuse.

     Asus hints at

The general manager for Asus China, Tony Yu hosted a video in which he pretty much confirmed that AMD is working on even more powerful AMD Ryzen X3D CPUs.

While not mentioning them by name outright, his hint in the video has led to speculation that the rumored 9950X3D and 9900X3D are indeed on the way and could land at CES. AMD already holds the crown for the best gaming CPU with its 9800X3D but these could crank performance in other applications up a notch.

What are the best Fallout New Vegas mods? Despite being over a decade old, Fallout New Vegas enjoys a thriving modding scene that has stood the test of time. In the 12 or so years since we first took our first step in the Mojave Wasteland, some talented people have been tinkering with it until it becomes an entirely different beast.

Two new MSI and Intel Steam Deck rivals could launch imminently, leak suggests

We've been waiting for a MSI Claw 8 AI+ launch date for some time now, but it now looks like we're getting not one, but two. Popping up briefly for pre-order on Amazon earlier this week, MSI's new Intel-powered gaming handheld looks set for a December release, with a smaller 7-inch version potentially being released this weekend.

The first attempt by MSI to break into the best gaming handheld market wasn't a huge success, with brutal MSI Claw reviews showing that it struggled to hold its own against competitors such as the Asus ROG Ally. MSI will no doubt be hoping that these new handhelds, the first to be powered by brand-new Intel Lunar Lake APUs, will be better received by gamers this time around.

How to overclock your AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D: Make your gaming CPU faster for free

Believe it or not, you can make AMD's latest king of the gaming CPU world even faster, and it won't even cost you any money. In this guide, we'll show you how to overclock the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, enabling you to run the CPU beyond its stock clock speed and squeeze an even higher frame rate out of it. We'll take you through three methods in this guide, one is an automatic overclock using Ryzen Master, and the others involve delving into your motherboard BIOS.

As we found in our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, this CPU is already the best gaming CPU you can buy right now, which is partly down to its clock speed. Check out the 9800X3D specs, and you'll see that this AMD CPU can boost to up to 5.2GHz, which is 200MHz faster than its predecessor, the 7800X3D.

What's more, unlike the 7800X3D, AMD has unlocked the multiplier on the 9800X3D, meaning you can even overclock it yourself. In this guide, we'll show you how to add yet more megahertz to the clock speed, so your CPU runs even faster.

Space Marine 2 performance is about to take a huge leap on Nvidia and AMD GPUs

This year's surprise mega-hit, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, is getting a patch that should improve performance on every level of PC. The game's developer has confirmed that Patch 5.0 will not only add support for frame generation on Nvidia GeForce GPUs, but also AMD Radeon graphics cards.

Frame generation tech works by inserting extra frames between the frames rendered by your GPU, smoothing out the frame rate. In this case, the Xenos-smashing epic will get frame generation from both Nvidia and AMD. Nvidia DLSS will only work on the company's graphics cards, but AMD's FSR tech will work on practically any current GPU. As such, you can also expect to see some of the best gaming handhelds getting a big boost in Space Marine 2 performance.

22 years ago, The Thing videogame was completely broken, but not anymore

On paper, the original, 2002 version of The Thing videogame was a great idea. Officially sanctioned by John Carpenter himself, it served as a direct sequel to the 1982 movie, and combined the claustrophobic scares of Resident Evil with a psychological element that wouldn't look out of place in modern multiplayer horror games. As the leader of a search party sent to find MacReady and co., any time you wanted, you could administer blood tests on your teammates to see if they had been replaced by a Thing doppelganger. It made for a terrific, slow-burn tension. Or at least it would have if the system wasn't completely broken. Nightdive, the studio behind System Shock Remake and remasters of Doom 64 and Turok, knows this is a problem. Its upcoming The Thing Remastered has a super-smart solution.

Brutal Half-Life inspired FPS game Selaco totally transformed by new free update

For all their excellence, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 share one significant shortcoming: there's not enough blood. The story is tight, the levels are fantastically designed and built, and the physics-driven set pieces, especially the collapsed railway bridge during Highway 17, are all spectacular. But Valve's shooters need more nastiness. FEAR, by Monolith, has this in spades. And of course Doom, and its 2016 reboot, and Doom Eternal, bring the bloodshed to almost comical levels. But if you want an FPS that looks, feels, and plays like Half-Life, but with more gleeful brutality, you need Selaco. A throwback boomer shooter with almost spotless Steam reviews, it's just been totally transformed with a new campaign, fresh combat mechanics, and even some ARPG elements, all for free.

Cyber Knights Colon Flashpoint does not lead with its best foot. This is easier to shrug off while it's still in early access, but I will confess some relief when I read that the Trese Brothers (It's pronounced "Trese") nudged their estimated release date back to 2025. It needs a bit longer. But I'm about ready to start recommending it.

I'm a tad biased by my love for their previous Star Traders Colon Frontiers, an interest in mercenary management, and a wish for more turn-based tactics games that aren't bloody XCOM again. That I have reservations about what CKF hasn't yet nailed down is in part a symptom of high expectations. And because despite carrying over some design ethos from Frontiers, Cyber Knights is a very different kind of game.

Back when Digital Extremes were largely known for collaborating with Epic Games on the Unreal Tournament series, they made a little game called Dark Sector. Released in 2008, it's part of the fine tradition of post-Gears double-A actioners that basically consist of taking a gruff man, throwing him into a world of grit, gravel and burning oil drums, and handing him a murderous gimmick. Dark Sector's gimmick was the glaive, a pointy boomerang you could use to scoop up objects, solve puzzles, and kill stuff in third-person view.

To be clear, I still think the best graphics card deal of Black Friday week is that RTX 4070 Super offer and oh no wait that one's gone now. But even if hadn't been ecommerced to death, there'd still be a way to get the upgraded ray tracing and DLSS 3 frame gen tools of the RTX 40 series for less cash still: plucky 1080p contender, the RTX 4060, whose deals are still very much available and kicking.

In the UK, the best available prices are for the MSI GeForce RTX Ventus 2X Black edition, which is the partner card I happen to own myself – and has become the effective go-to GPU for RPS game performance tests. Over in the US, meanwhile, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Gaming OC is the most affordable of all; it's a chunkier design than that of the compact Ventus 2X, though that's mainly just the tradeoff for having an extra fan. These cards were already on the cheaper end of the RTX 4060 spectrum, and now they're £30 / $35 off in the sales. Bargain.

As far as Black Friday deals go, the Logitech G502 Hero isn't so much low-hanging fruit as it is a root vegetable. Every year, this damned multi-buttoned mouse goes on sale, and every year, I'm powerless to avoid writing about it. Can't even be bothered to take a different header image photo. It's partly your fault, you know. You like it too much.

This time it's down from £80 to £26 in the UK (£27 outside the Bezos Empire), which isn't quite an all-time low, but is pretty close – and a silly-good price for such a capable mouse in any case. Its US discount price of $35 ain't half bad either, though I notice Amazon US is shouting louder about knocking the newer G502 X down from $80 for $45. That's mostly a fine mouse as well, though I find its redesigned scroll wheel a bit too much on scratchy side. Of the two, I'd stick with the classic.

You can now knock down enemy dirtbags using a dinner plate as a violent frisbee in Selaco. Wonderful. The first-person shooter, which is replete with satisfying explosions, gunfire, bullet ricochets, smashing glass, sparks, goo, blood spatters, dust, ice particles, smoke, flecks of plaster, and bad guys yelling at one another about how she's over there, may be described as noisy, both in the aural and visual sense of the word. Which is how we like it, you understand. This latest update to the early access shooter leans into that by layering on even more juicy shootFX. It also adds a whole new game mode and plenty of other tweaks. The bad news is that some story bits are now delayed.

Seeing great games sell too poorly for the pursestring goblins to shell out for a sequel is always a heartache, but it really stung to learn that the incredible Dead Space remake didn't catch on enough for EA to greenlight a remake of Dead Space 2 (even if EA were a little spotty on the details). Doubly so in the wake of The Callisto Protocol - a game I still think is worth picking up on a deep discount, if you like hitting gross things with a big bit of metal. It's quite exciting, then, to learn that the next game from Lies Of P developer Round 8 Studios might just replace that severed limb. But here's a properly chunky Black Friday discount on the most endearingly out-there Steam Deck rival to date, the Lenovo Legion Go: the 512GB model has shed hundreds of pounds/dollaridoos to fall all the way to £479 / $500. That's really not a lot for something that goes full luxe on its display and build quality, not to mention its party trick of letting the two controller sections split off, Nintendo-switch style, with one acting as a portable mouse.

This is also the cheapest that the Legion Go has ever gone, at least in the UK, so could make a good pickup if you've been wanting something with more power than the Steam Deck range but have been put off by the Legion Go or Asus ROG Ally X's high launch pricing.

NieR Reincarnation artbook - Official Document Collection - The Story of Prayer and the Cage

Kadokawa has released an artbook featuring illustrations and scripts from the now-defunct mobile game NieR Reincarnation. The book's title is NieR Re[in]carnation Official Document Collection - The Story of Prayer and the "Cage." It is available physically and digitally in Japan with a price tag of 4,950 yen (~$32.65).

The B5-sized book contains a total of 528 pages. In addition to illustrations and character designs, the NieR Reincarnation artbook also contains scripts for the numerous stories featured in the game, from the main story to individual stories for each character and weapon. The book even includes scripts from episodes that Square Enix never added to the actual game as well.

The last pages of the book contain an in-universe chronology and excerpts from the Lost Archive. These segments also cover all prior NieR series entries released as of 2024.

People outside Japan may have to overcome hurdles to get the book. Most Japanese web stores selling the book can only ship domestically, and the digital edition on BookWalker is also geo-locked to be only purchasable inside Japan. The Kindle e-book may be available for purchase internationally via Amazon Japan.

The NieR Re[in]carnation Official Document Collection - The Story of Prayer and the "Cage" has now been published. This book covers the online-exclusive free-to-play mobile game that Square Enix had shut down worldwide on April 29, 2024.

The notable dark sheep of the Dragon Quest family is undoubtedly Dragon Quest IX. For one, it featured unique online features that set it apart from the other titles besides Dragon Quest X. In addition, it is one of the only games not available on modern platforms. It is high time for a Dragon Quest IX remake similar to the recent Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

Perhaps surprisingly to our readers, Dragon Quest IX was my first entry in the series. I don't look back at it super fondly, as it is actually my least favorite of the ones I've played (III, VII, VIII, X, and XI). Even still, there is something special about the experience, especially if you happened to have a Nintendo DS at the time.

You get the player agency of creating your character from scratch and making them whatever you want. You don't just get to customize companions, which is a nice feature. In addition, emphasized multiplayer heavily. Even though I never had a DS and played this on 3DS, I, fortunately, had the chance to check out the multiplayer before the servers went offline.

The multiplayer is a bit weird but charming in a way. You have options like loaning and receiving other players' characters to adventure with. If you could find others online at the same time, you could even travel the vast world together in a party of up to four players. It felt novel and thrilling at the time, especially for a turn-based JRPG.

In a way, Dragon Quest IX feels like a progenitor to the very next title: Dragon Quest X. This Japan-exclusive (for now) took the leap to the MMO genre and its predecessor paved the way. As it stands, it still looks unlikely we will get the 10th mainline title in the West, at least in the online version.

As such, it would be wonderful to have Dragon Quest IX as a remaster or full-on remake. Just think of the HD-2D art style but for this overlooked ninth entry. Players could make stunning angelic characters and travel around with other players. Or, it could be fully offline if someone prefers a more traditional adventure.

Releasing it on other platforms like PlayStation and PC, in addition to the expected Nintendo release, would allow for a burgeoning online community. Crossplay functionality would allow this JRPG to do well with a niche but dedicated community and last far longer than its original DS release. It would also fulfill the potential this game had but never fully realized. This was largely due to the limitations of the DS' online servers.

Admittedly, one of the areas I didn't like the experience was in the combat and story. The combat feels a bit too simple, even for this series. The same goes for the highly forgettable plot, which is the weakest of the games I've played in the series. A remake wouldn't likely fix all of those issues, but it could help some. For one, the graphics in the HD-2D style would look incredible. Being able to speed up battles or even auto-battle would make combat more enjoyable. Plus, new vocations to choose from would attract newcomers and veterans alike.

But, above all else, we need a Dragon Quest IX remake or at least remaster since it no longer exists on a modern platform. No other Dragon Quest game has this same issue today, except VII. But at least VII has a mobile version in Japan and a worldwide 3DS port. IX has none of those features and has only been available on the Nintendo DS.

With the online focus, Dragon Quest IX runs the risk of being the most forgotten game in the series. It would take a bit more of an effort to remake it because of this, but it would likely be worth it. After all, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake sales were incredible at launch. The work to make this remake would pay off in the end. Here's hoping we get that Dragon Quest IX remake in the future since it has no modern version and more players should check out its experimental multiplayer focus.

Dragon Quest IX is only available for the Nintendo DS. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is available for Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
