Welcome to the Week in Review
Welcome
Perhaps this felt like another Apple week. After all, Apple finally delivered the iPhone SE... ’scuse me, the iPhone 16e. It was a surprise – or at least the name of Apple's new ‘budget’ phone (there’s quite a price hike over the SE 3) was, alongside the new C1 chip. Team TechRadar did a good job of breaking down this new bit of Appleness, highlighting, among other things, everything the iPhone 16e is missing (there’s a lot).

The real news, though, is still in artificial intelligence, a now-dominant tech feature in our lives, as proved by a new survey carried out by the publishers of TechRadar that also delivered lots of fascinating AI-centric data points. However, my favorite AI story of the week is the one in which we explain how to craft the perfect prompt. Who knew this was an art form? My discussions with ChatGPT are about to level way up.

This rush to an all-digital, all-artificial lifestyle makes stories like Health and Fitness Editor Matt Evans’ experience of using a relatively dumb watch for his training even more interesting and important. I think we need a bit more old-school in our lives to remind us how far we’ve come in such a short time, and maybe to help keep us in touch with our humanity.

One character who spans the analog-to-digital generations is James Bond, and the gadgets of 007’s iconic 1960s Sean Connery days were almost loveably analog and ridiculous. By the 21st century Bond was packing all manner of smartphones alongside his Walther, often with capabilities that either far outstripped or presaged features we see today.

I’m now wondering if, with Amazon firmly in control of the franchise, the most gadgety thing Bond will be brandishing is a pair of Echo Frames smart glasses, and whether Amazon might finally bring us the first female 007…

“The name’s Bond, Alexa Bond.”

Enjoy your weekend!
