Sordid, flesh-eating medieval tactics RPG Wartales is getting a new Fires in the Capital DLC expansion in April. It adds a wartorn metropolis to the game - Isandrin, crown jewel of Edoran and home of the Legion. As such, it's a departure from the mucky outland gigwork you may be accustomed to, offering what Shiro game director Quentin Lapeyre calls "a dense, reactive capital, where the Chaos system ensures that every decision can impact the entire city".

As the boss murderer of a troupe of thugs, you are under no obligation to save Isandrin from escalating factional tensions. You can work to restore order, or you can hasten the proud burg's demise, with dastardly methods ranging from the shanking of bandits to outbreaks of public singing. How horrible!

Get in the videogame, loser, it's time to break into an "impossible palace", stab insect gardeners with your saber, and rescue your mother from some bastard prince. Look at the delightful tarantulas loitering in the low-poly orchards. Ugh, why don't I have a palace that looks a bit like a vintage four-colour horror comic. Why am I cursed to live in this world, with its vast plenitude of colours that all muddle together without contrast. Please, watch the trailer while I grieve.

Regardless of whether Intel would say it out loud, the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K Plus both represent an attempt to right the wrongs of the original Arrow Lake/Core Ultra 200S family. That bundle of chips was, necessarily, more power-efficient and cooler-running than the hotheaded 14th Gen models before them, though this came at the cost of hamstrung gaming performance. Rarely a desirable quality in a gaming CPU, that.

These two Core Ultra 200S Plus (or Arrow Lake Refresh) processors do, in comparison, achieve some appeal. They're inexpensive and excellent multitaskers, and while they do still have efficiency on their silicon brains, Intel have looked to bump game speeds back up by rejigging their innards into a less latency-prone layout.

Alas, it's not enough. Not only are Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K Plus slower in games than AMD's best chips, they once again fail to convincingly outpace Intel's own back catalogue – the 2023 vintage 14th gen processors, included.

FFVII Ever Crisis Dirge of Cerberus Chapter 2 Features Nero

Square Enix announced the Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII storyline will continue in FFVII Ever Crisis with a new second chapter event on March 25, 2026. A first trailer is available that teases how much will be covered this time. In addition to Azul the Cerulean and Shelke the Transparent showing up, it also looks like we might get a Nero the Sable boss fight in this FFVII spin-off. Everything kicks off at 7pm PT/10pm ET.

As seen in the initial Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII event in FFVII Ever Crisis, this is a condensed retelling of the follow-up game that starred Vincent Valentine. It explored his past and abilities, while also going over Shinra's Deepground soldiers. He's called upon by Reeve Tuesti's WRO to investigate and handle the issues caused by the group, with assistance from a scientist named Shalua Rui and some returning characters like Yuffie Kisaragi. The first chapter event featured altercations and storyline segments with Rosso the Crimson and Azul. It seemed like that ended around the events of Chapter 4 in the PS2 game. Given we're seeing an encounter with Nero and a 3D model of him performing what seems to be an in-battle attack, it would suggest this second part covers up through the tenth chapter of Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII

Here's the latest FFVII Ever Crisis trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcHgvBzjKoU

Prior to this continuing event, Square Enix celebrated the 2.5 anniversary in FFVII Ever Crisis. That meant new equipment for some characters. Things started with special costumes and weapons for Sephiroth and Tifa Lockheart, and more recently involved gear and swords for Angeal Hewley and Zack Fair.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for PCs and mobile devices, and the Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII Chapter 2 event will start at 7pm PT/10pm ET on March 25, 2026. The Dirge of Cerberus game is only available on the PS2.

Persona Sound Station Will Share Persona 3 Soundtrack

Atlus announced that as part of the Persona series 30th anniversary, it will hold a Persona 3 Sound Station music live stream with songs from that entry's soundtracks. It will last for 30th hours and start at 3am PT/6am ET on March 27, 2026. It is only the first "volume" in a new series of events, and it will be accessible worldwide. Said soundtracks have previously been available to stream online on places like YouTube and Spotify or buy on stores like Amazon.

This will end up being a more diverse presentation than expected. That's because it won't be focusing on a single soundtrack that looks. Rather, Atlus confirmed music from multiple Persona 3 performances will appear, which could include soundtracks from the different versions of the game and other arrangements. The company also confirmed "live concert footage" will be among the media shown during the stream.

Here's the placeholder for the Persona Sound Station Volume 1: Persona 3 Series Music 30-Hour Livestream that will stream songs from the soundtrack. There is no region-lock, and all information is available in Japanese and English.

https://www.youtube.com/live/Wx8mWTDGdvc

Note that if you miss this stream, you can't watch it later. Atlus noted it won't be archived. So once it ends at 9am PT/12pm ET on March 28, 2026, that's it.

It's unknown if we could see any music from the recent US concert at this performance. That happened on January 24, 2026. It marked the first time the Persona Music Experience showed up in the US.

Persona 3 and its FES version are on the PS2, Persona 3 Portable is on the PSP, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and Persona 3 Reload is on the Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Super Mario Galaxy Luma and Yoshi Popcorn Buckets Already Sold Out

Earlier in March 2026, the Cinemark Shop noted that it would sell Yoshi and Luma Super Mario Galaxy Movie popcorn buckets, and both options sold out shortly after they went live online on the morning of March 23, 2026. There is still an option to sign up for restock notifications on the product page for each one. The Luma variants cost $44.95 each, while the Yoshi is $49.95. People could also check in a local theater to see if they are available to purchase, as the official social media account noted those went on sale on March 21, 2026. Cinemark also noted that while the initial Yoshi stock sold out, the newly opened pre-order at 11:30am ET on March 23, 2026 will mark the final production run of the merchandise and end on April 17, 2026. [Thanks, Wario64!]

In the case of the Luma, there are four different variants. You can get a blue, green, red, or yellow one. The red and yellow versions have smiling faces, while the blue and green ones look surprised. Each one can hold 105oz of popcorn. They all also have an LED light option.

Here's how all of those look:

In the case of the Yoshi, only the one option is available. It shows the character holding an egg, and a hatch on the front can open to place popcorn inside. That also holds 105oz. On the page for that, Cinemark noted it will make an announcement at 8:30am ET/11:30am ET on March 23, 2026 regarding it.

Here's the official social media video showing the popcorn bucket:

Other merchandise tied to the film include Old Spice soaps and Lush bath products.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will appear in theaters on April 1, 2026.

Digimon Con 2026 Announcements Include Digimon Story DLC, D-Ark Color

Bandai Namco held a Digimon Con 2026 stream on March 21, 2026, and it featured announcements like a DLC expansion for Digimon Story: Time Stranger, a Digimon Tamers D-Ark 25th Color Evolution virtual pet assortment, more Godzilla edition virtual pets, and a new game called Digimon UP. The pre-orders for both types of devices are already live in Japan, with Bandai Namco's official social media accounts promising worldwide launches at a later date. The new mobile game will be out in 2026, and the add-on for the JRPG will appear in 2027.

The most details are available about the new devices. The Digimon Tamers D-Ark 25th Color Evolution virtual pets are expected to launch in July 2026 in Japan. Those will be available in color schemes based on the ones Takato Matsuda (Takato Matsuki), Henry Wong (Li Jianliang), and Rika Nonaka (Ruki Makino) used. They will cost 14,300円 (~$90) each. Meanwhile, the Godzilla Edition Omegamon: G Fusion Digimon Pendulum Color options will follow in August 2026 in the country. Those will be 7,920円 (~$50) each. Both models are in color. The D-Ark variants also vibrate during certain actions to provide force feedback.

Here is the official art for both:

Trailers appeared for both too. You can see the D-Ark 25th Color Evolution video below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ip7MAdHpCs

And here's the one for the new Godzilla Digimon models:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1zvzwCL17w

Details about the new games are more vague. Digimon Story: Time Stranger previously had a season pass with three extra episode expansion add-ons that added some new quests and characters. The 2027 expansion will be a larger affair. At the event, Producer Ryosuke Hara hinted at further Aegiomon appearances by noting Mutsumi Tamura is involved and the 139th Digimon Referendum feedback poll that asked which characters people wanted to see more of affected this. With Digimon Up, it will be a 2026 mobile game that involves raising and battling Digimon. The site for that is live, and there's a trailer for it.

Here's that reveal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldKGPj5hgKc

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, it is heading to the Switch and Switch 2 on July 10, 2026, and the expansion is coming in 2027, and there's no date for the 2027 Digimon Con yet. Digimon Up will come to mobile devices in 2026.

Jam Kuradoberi and Robo-Ky coming to Guilty Gear Strive via Season Pass 5

Arc System Works revealed at the 2025-2026 Arc World Tour Finals that it will formally add Jam Kuradoberi and Robo-Ky to Guilty Gear Strive. Both recurring characters will be part of the all-new Season Pass 5 that will add a total of four characters throughout Spring 2027.

Jam will be the first character featured in this pass. Arc System Works will add her to the roster on April 9, 2026. The company has also published her personal trailer with Japanese and English voiceover versions.

Robo-Ky will be the second character to follow in Summer 2026. Arc System Works has also prepared two unannounced character slots slated for release in Winter 2026 and Spring 2027, respectively.

The fifth Season Pass will also launch with a major Ver. 2.00 update that adds more battle mechanics, special moves, and character customization features. A sneak peek of the update is available via the official trailer Arc System Works has uploaded right below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDNHyfej2nc

The decisions to bring in both Jam and Robo-Ky in Season Pass 5 appear to be influenced by a public survey Arc System Works held in 2024—around the time it added Dizzy to Guilty Gear Strive. Both characters led the poll rankings in most regions worldwide, with Jam leading in East and Southeast Asia, while Robo-Ky was popular across the West and Middle East.

Jam Kuradoberi will appear as the first Season Pass 5 character for Guilty Gear Strive on April 9, 2026. The base release of the fighting game is readily available worldwide on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and arcades.

ninomae ina nis interview inanis

Hololive Vtuber Ninomae Ina'nis has a busy week ahead of her after an already packed few months, as she's headlining a Drawn to Dawn concert alongside Myth gen-mate Kiara Takanashi between March 27-28, 2026. This follows a new original song, her first EP, an appearance at HoloFes 2026, and a Monster Hunter Wilds collaboration. Siliconera caught up with her ahead of the show to talk about her music, art, activities, and future.

Jenni Lada: You released a new original song called "TAKO∞TAKOVER" ahead of Drawn to Dawn. Was the launch planned to coincide with the concert all along? How long were you working on it?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I had the basic concept for "TAKO∞TAKOVER" planned out for a few years! After participating in multiple live performances over the years, I became captivated with how the audience can elevate the experience of these live performances by joining in on the chanting and cheers of the song. I have not had original songs where the audience could shout and call together during the performance, so I wanted to make a really fun song for everyone to have fun singing!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sAQ1wuYzxk

You also handled the art for the "TAKO∞TAKOVER" video. What inspired you to go with the design direction you chose for it?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I would like to give the credit for the art direction for "TAKO∞TAKOVER" to tellingbones, who was in charge of the character design and the animations for the MV! I have worked with them before for my 3D birthday live "EVERMORE", and when I was thinking of someone who could bring my ideas for "TAKO∞TAKOVER" to life I could not think of anyone but tellingbones!! I have always loved their character design and animation, and they have a unique style that I thought was perfect for the MV. I explained the rough idea for the song and the general direction I wanted to take in terms of the art and animation, and I was blown away by how perfect the initial character design drafts were!! The portrayal of something that is very comical whilst being dark and doomed in nature was done so masterfully with the beautiful character design and whimsical animations!

I really want to give big thanks to tellingbones who really brought everything to life!

Your first EP re:Vision debuted ahead of the concert too. When did you decide you wanted to put together an album like that?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I have been tossing around the idea of putting together an album with original songs for many years, but it had not come to fruition due to logistical issues. However, when the discussions started for Drawn to Dawn, we were thankfully able to arrange for the creation of the EP and have it released before the concert! We could not do a full album with the limited time we had, but we were able to create an EP since I already had a solid idea and planned out which songs I wanted to release ahead of time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwWo2idQeBI

In addition to the concert and your other activities, you took part in the "Speed Dating with holoMyth" event with Calliope Mori and Kiara Takanashi. What kind of preparation goes into those sorts of annual holiday streams, and is there a particular year's event that you liked most?

Ninomae Ina'nis: The Speed Dating stream this time was planned out by a director in the company and they helped oversee the entire process! This time around we oversaw and gave feedback for the illustrations and other assets created for the stream, song cover, and the SNS posts. I think this year's Speed Dating stream was very memorable as I enjoyed the preparations and execution of the entire project, and having our kouhais fighting for our love was very cute!!

One of the other things you worked on was the new collaboration outfit designs for both Koseki Bijou and yourself for the Monster Hunter Wilds streams the two of you did. How did you decide to go with the Nu Udra and Gore Magala designs for the two of you, and did you get any assistance on Capcom's end to help with references for your designs?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I think Bijou chose Gore Magala almost instantly and I thought it was the perfect choice for her! I had a very strong image for what her outfit would look like from the very start so I didn't have much trouble polishing up the details afterwards.

For me, I initially chose a different monster – Uth Duna – since I thought the iridescent texture of the fins could be a cool design…until Nu Udra was revealed to the world a little while later. At first I thought I would stick with Uth Duna to avoid the obvious connection to Nu Udra's designs, but the more I looked at Nu Udra the more I was captivated by its design!! I then asked if I could change to Nu Udra for the outfit and was really happy when they allowed me to! (I was definitely not preparing a 50 page document on why it would be the greatest idea for me to switch monsters)

Capcom also provided me with very detailed references of the monsters, and I was internally dancing with joy that I got to see the materials…! I was able to clearly see which part of the monster would be important to represent in the outfit so I made sure to try to incorporate as much of it in the design as possible. I heard that the actual designer of Nu Udra themselves gave feedback on my outfit design and I was very honored and extremely happy!!!! Especially since Nu Udra (and Xu Wu) were the first cephalopod monsters that was introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds, so I can only imagine the amount of thought and love they put into designing Nu Udra…and to officially design an outfit AND get feedback from them?! It felt like a dream! (I will stop here because I can talk about this all day haha)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKNI9C-yWvQ

You had the hololive Super Expo 2026 at the beginning of March. What did preparation for that look like for you, specially with your own concert with Kiara coming up?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I definitely remember my brain being overloaded with the number of choreo to remember for all the songs I am to perform. Dance lessons and rehearsals start months ahead of the concert and live dates, so having to remember all the choreographs for all the songs for an extended amount of time become really difficult…! Other than that, I think it was mostly trying to make sure I don't get too sick or making sure all my tasks and schedules were on time!

You've gotten a lot of opportunities to take part in different types of events in your years with Hololive. Is there any kind of event you haven't gotten to do yet that you'd like to?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I have been very grateful for so many opportunities over the years and being able to participate in a lot of events, so I really want to host some sort of charity event where I can give back sometime!

Now that you're coming up on your sixth year with COVER, what are your dreams for 2026?

Ninomae Ina'nis: I think the last six years have really shaped me as a person and as a creator, so I want to take some time in 2026 to think about and explore new ways I can apply the knowledge and experiences I learned to create something I can to share with the world!

I also want to stream and play more games I have in my backlog since I was really focused on projects last year! Please look forward to it!

Ninomae Ina'nis streams on YouTube, and she's also active on social media. Her Drawn to Dawn concert with Kiara Takanashi will take place between March 27-28, 2026, and streaming tickets are available via SPWN and Streaming+.

Death Stranding 2 Sam crying shower

There's nothing quite like digging into a new game and immersing yourself in a world for hours every day, for days or weeks at a time.

Being able to lose yourself in a good story, or a massive open world, or an RPG that lasts for upwards of 100 hours is the kind of stuff that keeps gamers going and gaming despite the world around them. And as most of us hardcore players already know, it sometimes comes with a cost: when that game is finally done.

Watching the credits roll on a game is a bittersweet thing, but a new study by SWPS University in Poland has confirmed that "post-game depression," or P-GD, is real, described as "a feeling of emptiness after completing an exceptionally immersive and emotionally charged game." I've felt this feeling many times before, so having some science backing it feels validating.

"P-GD is a specific type of grief after loss, reminiscent of parting with a loved one or the end of an important life stage," psychologist Kamil Janowicz, author of the study, said. "Our research shows that for many gamers, the virtual world becomes such a significant source of emotions that returning to everyday life requires time and appropriate psychological tools. These results may help us better understand gamer experiences, and they could be useful in the game design process."

Fans of lengthy RPGs where you become more and more invested in characters could feel the sadness even more, according to the study. And this checks out with one of my worst and most recent bouts with P-GD, after I finished Final Fantasy VII Rebirth after around 90 hours of play time.

"Our research shows that gamers playing role-playing games (RPGs) are most susceptible to post-game depression," the study said. "It is in these games that players have the greatest influence on character development through their decisions, and build the strongest bonds with their characters. And the more engaging the game world and the closer the relationship with the character, the more difficult it is to return to reality once the game is over."

Dr. Janowicz noted some concern about gamers, saying the study's results "raise a number of questions about the ethical aspects of game development, and taking into account the potential impact of gameplay on player well-being in this process."

P-GD happened for me again with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach last year, and again this year once I finally rolled credits on Resident Evil Requiem. As fans of the medium, we wish these games, or at least the first time experiencing them, could last forever. Playing them for an extended period of time and always having that time to look forward to in life is part of what makes them so special. And when they end, the feeling of joy that comes with the games sometimes ends too.

What's your worst P-GD episode? Or do you not believe in it? Let us know in the comments.

Leon goes shirtless in a mod for Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem is already one of the most popular games in an ever-popular series, if you don't count Resident Evil 6. It can, however, get even better, or be different, at the very least. So, let's look at its best mods.

Play the entire game as Leon

Research not funded by Umbrella has been conducted, and one of the main reasons Requiem was such a big hit is something scientists call the "Leon factor". I don't know if that's entirely true, but I know Leon is a tremendously popular character that everyone loves to play as, but RE9 isn't a Leon-only RE game. This mod fixes that problem by making RE9 a Leon-only campaign that skips over all of Grace's segments.

If that's not enough Leon for you, there's also...

Shirtless Leon

https://youtu.be/reLkZdpzS54

It's exactly what the name says, with the bonus of letting players wear Leon's gun holsters or his coat. It's as simple as it gets, and somehow it's one of the most popular mods out there. People really like Leon.

Now, if you want even more Leon, why not simply replace Grace entirely?

Mod that lets you play as Leon in Grace's sections

Grace is a great character with many great sections in Resident Evil Requiem, and skipping them would be a mistake.

Full Playable Leon doesn't simply put Leon in Grace's shoes; it swaps the models while keeping Grace's animations. The result pokes fun at the obvious imbalance in badassness between the two main characters, and has Leon looking like an incredibly scared kitty most of the time. I love it because the game's native animations are so good that the mod finally allows us to see what Leon would look like if he were to ever get scared. Also, you get to see two Leons working together, how's that for "Leon factor?"

And if you're into Leon's gameplay, there's also a mod where we get to play as Grace as if she were Leon, meaning she goes from mostly helpless to a killing and suplexing machine, like if she'd been through the same training as Leon had between Resident Evil 2 and 4.

All the arachnophobia mods

Thomas the Tank Engine replaces spiders in Resident Evil Requiem Mod
Image via Capcom

It seems as if there are monsters that people like to face, such as skinless hulks that'll lick you to death, huge beasts that'll crush your skull with one hand, and putrid once-humans who're out there to eat you alive, and then monsters too scary even for many hardened gamers, like regular spiders. That's right, gamers really don't like spiders, so modders have already come up with not one, but a plethora of mods to make spiders more palatable. So far, you can replace a spider with more Mr. X, Thomas the Tank Engine, or something akin to the smoke monster from Lost.

Realistic headshots

I love Resident Evil 4, but it introduced hard-headed zombies, and I really need my zombies to die with one headshot.
Seeing zombies that can casually shrug away my John Wick-level headshots is a huge turnoff, and the realistic headshots mod fixes that simple-but-relevant problem.

More zombies

If you're that good at pulling off headshots and think that the mod above will make things too easy for you, then, well, get more targets.

Fighting the bear in Crimson Desert

If you're sick of the usual horse mount in Crimson Desert, you can get a bear, which is pretty cool. It's completely possible to get your own Grizzly in the game. While the creature doesn't exactly become a pet, you can tame it to add it as an animal companion.

However, it's significantly harder to find a bear, and then comes the act of turning it into a mount. Let's look at how to get a new mount for your adventures.

How to find a Bear in Crimson Desert

Unlike the horse, the bear starts as a wild animal in the Hernand Highlands. Go south of Hernand near the first Abyss Nexus, and you'll find a ledge in the area. There's a bear den here with one sleeping inside. While this is the best location, you'll be able to find bears in other areas as well. The exact location doesn't matter; you just need to find one.

Bear location in Crimson Desert

Before we proceed to the next step, I recommend creating a save file. My first couple of attempts were pretty grim, and getting mauled to death doesn't sit well with me.

How to tame a Bear in Crimson Desert

For starters, you can't technically 'tame' a bear without having to fight it. Bears also can't be kept in stables (at least, as of writing), so you'll need to find one every time you begin a fresh session. When you dismount a bear, it will become hostile. You'll need to exhaust its stamina to tame and mount it. If you're ready to put in all this extra effort because a horse might feel boring, read on.

The Bear in Crimson Desert
Image via Pearl Abyss

  • Have a strong weapon. I prefer using a melee weapon, but ranged works fine.
  • Next, deal damage until the bear is either exhausted or stunned. There will be ample visual cues to know when the bear has tired out.
  • Once it's tired, it will begin to stagger. Approach the creature, and hold the X/Square button on your controller. There will be a small window of approximately three seconds when you'll get the option to mount it.

That's pretty much how you can mount a bear. Once you manage to mount it, the bear can travel anywhere just like the horse. The only difference is that it will turn hostile once you dismount it.

CoD MW 2019 desert

Call of Duty is back, baby! Well, one specific CoD game, that is.

A massive resurgence of players, including a new all-time peak player count on Steam, has arrived in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 reboot of the MW sub-franchise that began back in 2007's Call of Duty 4 reached 61,667 players on Steam yesterday, higher than the current Call of Duty HQ app that includes Black Ops 7, Warzone, and more.

Modern Warfare Captain Price
Image via Activision

Why? Well, it's six bucks on Steam right now. SIX DOLLARS. Activision is taking part in Steam's Spring Sale, and many of its games are marked down, including several more recent CoD titles and others like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and more.

But for MW 2019, its 90 percent discount makes it by far the cheapest it has ever been. It's the cheapest game in Activision's whole sale listing, and that's probably by design. What better way to get players excited for the upcoming game than by lowering the point of access to another?

Rumors point to a new sequel in the Modern Warfare series coming this year after back-to-back Black Ops releases. That reveal is likely coming in the next few months, so this huge discount feels targeted to get players talking and back into the ecosystem, especially when compared to the other sale prices (the original CoD from way back in 2003 is $10 right now).

But I will say, it's been quite funny to see the discussion about MW 2019 popping back up. It was a massively successful CoD game commercially, but it had quite a few controversial design decisions. No red dots on the mini map, no map voting, and only six six-vs-six maps on launch were just some of the issues it had.

This game also began the current CoD cycle of seasonal content drops and strict skill-based matchmaking, so players have some very varied feelings about it. But for six bucks, why not, right? That's likely the thought process of many of these players.

I have some pretty fond memories of the game, because I basically played only Search and Destroy with three or four friends. The respawn modes and maps were not my favorite, to say the least. And so I can't help but wonder if this big discount is a hint at what the new game, possibly called Modern Warfare 4, will play like.

UESC Marathon screen

The latest new release to break gaming discourse on the internet is from the makers of Halo and Destiny, and those decades of shooter DNA can be felt in its slick gunplay and deep world-building that players have come to expect from Bungie.

The biggest issue with Marathon is that it's extremely niche, built for a hardcore PvP extraction shooter audience, with PvE quests and missions in the background as powerful AI enemies also add in several wrinkles to the core loop. But is it a bad thing? Not for me, but your mileage may vary quite a bit.

It's not a race

As many have discovered over the past few weeks, Marathon is a game that greatly improves as you put more time into it. That's been a mostly positive experience for me, but it's also undoubtedly turned away many players who had a bad time in the shooter's unforgiving early hours. And that's sort of been the overlying trend with this game since its inception: a largely divided response. And I get it, because you can't really expect every gamer to be okay with needing to put in a lot of time for a game to begin to become fun.

I've been skeptical about Marathon since it was announced, especially after playing the lackluster closed alpha test last year. For a long time, I was indifferent if not unexcited about the prospects of playing and reviewing it. But one thing that has never been in question to me is this game's distinct visual style. Every inch of its menus, cutscenes, environments, music, and art style absolutely drips aura. Many disagree. It's truly a love-or-hate aesthetic, but I fall in the former camp.

Marathon's art style stands out from just about anything else that's been released in recent years, boasting an utterly unique, colorful, blocky vibe that you either like or don't. Futuristic interiors are found scattered around alien environments, giving variety to exploration and looting. I like it, so I find the look of the game to be an awesome complement to everything else it has to offer, which is a very fun PvEvP extraction experience, with a big emphasis on that second P, carried by Bungie's trademark solid gunplay and very smooth optimization on my mid-tier rig.

As you level up, extract with improved loot, unlock upgrades, and grow to better understand the core gameplay loop with each run, the odds of the game getting its hooks into you increase. For me, the first days following Marathon's release felt very familiar to that of ARC Raiders, where I found myself thinking about it when I wasn't playing it, and sneaking out of bed for one more run before lying down to sleep at night and continuing to think about it.

PvP is everything in Marathon, and while it's possible to use proximity chat to attempt to team up with other players or squads (or plead for your life), it feels like a rarity. My PvP experience has been cutthroat, and the antithesis to the time I had in my other most-played extraction shooter in ARC Raiders. It truly feels as though the vast majority of Runners are not logging on to make friends (although it's possible, especially in randomly-queued Trios), and that likely scares away PvE-focused players who may be trying to do quests across the game's various locations.

Image via Bungie

One of the best things I can say about Marathon's core loop is that I've had multiple occasions over the past couple of weeks where I would lose a gunfight and a ton of gear, get frustrated, and close the game, only to be sitting there at my desk for a few minutes, ready to open it up again for one more run to try and re-gain my stash.

A lot of the "one more run" feel that the game has must be given credit to Marathon's map design, which at least in its launch offerings, is great. Perimeter is a good starting point for all players, while Dire Marsh brings a foggy, sweatier experience with the chance for more PvP. Outpost, meanwhile, is a claustrophobic, dangerous, and intricate locale with weather hazards and light puzzle-solving required for quests and acquisition of some of the best loot, all while dealing with tougher AI.

And then there's the masterfully-crafted endgame map, Cryo Archive, which can function like a Destiny raid where you have to fight other players at the same time. Each area is filled with different activities and opportunities that up the risk/reward stakes in different ways, with a layout that filters players towards each other with top-tier loot everywhere to be found.

But the most important thing about Marathon's PvP is that it feels really damn good. It's fun. Having to work together with teammates is enjoyable, coordinating movements and attacks around the map and gauging whether or not to go weapons free and alert the enemy AI that lurk many of the points of interest across the game's maps. And shooting just feels satisfying, whether your bullets are destined for bots or unsuspecting gamers trying to get away with valuable materials. I can't reiterate enough how good the weapons feel, which is something that Bungie always nails, regardless of anything else.

Similarly, the solo experience in Marathon is likened by many to a horror game at times, and I have to agree. The tension I feel while navigating the map, either looking for loot or gunfights, is palpable, especially with the combat formidability of the PvE foes combined with other players also playing sneakily. It's all ratcheted up against the backdrop of Marathon's dark sci-fi world, where several factions are fighting over the resources that remain of a failed human colony in the outer reaches of space, setting for a vibe that's thus far unmatched in the genre. Bring some good headphones and get ready to hear every thunking footstep of bots or distant gunfire to help inform you of what to do next.

Those same factions are core to the experience in Marathon, offering contracts to complete and upgrades to chase. But they're brought to life brilliantly by some of the top voice actors in the business, and animated in a glitchy, dark future AI style that makes them a thrill to visit and listen to as you climb the ranks.

Marathon Arachne
Screenshot by Destructoid

Although it's a PvP-focused game, Marathon's world is filled with environmental storytelling that's further fleshed out by codex unlocks and signature Bungie ARGs. This new title is an extension of the deep sci-fi story of the original FPS trilogy from the 90s, and it's ripe for opportunity to expand with lore drops that could continue to build an ongoing plot. A fantastic OST only serves to increase futuristic atmosphere of dread and opportunity.

The overarching story of multiple artificial intelligences chasing godhood, mysterious alien races, the failed expedition of humanity to Tau Ceti IV, the enigmatic ruins of the UESC Marathon ship, and the factions looking to pillage its remains are just a few parts of this title's ongoing plot that is already the best in the extraction shooter genre. But therein lies the rub: this is a PvP game, and its lore is thus far relegated to audio logs and the occasional cutscene, and it feels like a missed opportunity to really dive in to this sci-fi story in more meaningful ways. But I expect we'll get more and even better storytelling over time, as is Bungie's M.O.

But the clock is ticking

Marathon death
Image via Bungie

Some of Marathon's post-launch discussion has revolved around the game's daily concurrent player count, which usually isn't a factor in a written review. But as a live-service game, and Bungie's first new release after being acquired by Sony, it's important in the eyes of many, and deservedly so.

These days, multiplayer games are quickly shut down or benched (followed sometimes, unfortunately, by layoffs or closures). In light of that, I don't blame gamers for being interested in this sort of thing. I don't know where Marathon will be in six months to a year, but as a launch title, it's a game that I and others are having a lot of fun with, especially as I invest more and more time and interest into it.

As a live-service game, Marathon will continue to get updates to improve it over time. There have already been a couple. These patches serve to iterate on feedback and add content to the game or address feedback from players. Despite Destiny 2's recent failures, its longevity has shown that Bungie is capable of creating a successful live-service title if given the time and resources. But now, it's fair to call the promise of both into question, given the circumstances.

Beyond this unfortunate and forced uncertainty, one of the game's biggest pain points for me early on was familiarizing myself with the menus and UI. Like all extraction shooters, Marathon is flooded with a bunch of junk items, power-ups, buffs, and debuffs to learn, and it's completely overwhelming at first. I've become more accustomed to it now as I've racked up hours of playtime, but I still think they could use some work for quicker readability for new players to prevent them from getting bogged down early.

Marathon is quite a punishing game, too, whether you're new or a veteran with hours in the bank. It's very easy for things to snowball in any given run, dealing with environmental hazards, AI enemies, and sneaky players all at the same time. You will repeatedly die and lose your gear, whether you're a sweaty PvP pro or a noob. And as ever, losing your hard-earned high-quality gear sucks and feels very bad, making it feel like you're losing progress quickly. But I also think it's easy enough to queue up with a free Sponsored Kit, or even as the solo-only loot-goblin Rook class, to play carefully and stock back up before heading out for a serious quest-oriented mission again. This makes the vaunted "gear fear" that sometimes plagues the genre feel not so prevalent, for the most part.

Marathon S'pht
Image via Bungie

The other playable classes are inoffensive, to a fault. They generally don't feel too overpowered (although the medic Triage class is always nice to have on your squad when shields or HP get low, and solos are infested with the invisibility-cloaking Assassin), but they also lack personality and punch when compared with other "hero shooter" archetypes. That's likely by design, as the classes are Runner Shells meant to be inhabited by a consciousness and then discarded, but it still makes them tough to stand out amongst the crowd.

Marathon's different classes work best when in a team of coordinated play, so I highly suggest having a squad to play with to really sweat it out in PvP and get the most out of the experience. I've had several positive runs with randomly matched teammates, and many stealthy solo excursions along the way, beginning with a very punishing first few hours. But Marathon truly excels as a PvP game in a group, actively hunting down other teams to steal their gear or unlock secrets on the maps.

Playing isn't just better with a communicative team, sometimes it's required, like in Cryo Archive. The endgame activity offers some of the most unique, exciting gameplay challenges the extraction genre has ever seen, and it's unapologetically difficult to survive without even making it to the final boss to reap its rewards. It will be remarkably tough for most players to even access it, let alone succeed.

Cryo Archive requires a full team working together to tackle the challenges within it, leveling up, acquiring key items, and solving puzzles in order to make your way towards a main goal while meeting up to fight against other teams and also dealing with strong AI enemies everywhere. Marathon's first endgame content thus far offers a very memorable experience with your group, so if you can manage it, it's worth it to grind for. But realistically, the majority of players will miss out on it due to how difficult the activity is and how long it takes to be gear-ready for it.

I have some other minor gripes with Marathon, like how you can only complete one active contract at a time, or how you can't move while you open the map to mark your next destination. The spectator camera if you die and want to watch teammates play is also annoyingly over-the-shoulder and jarring. These things could potentially be fixed in future updates if the want for it is loud enough, though, and as a live-service game, it's expected to get better from here.

Marathon dead runner and cat
Image via Bungie

In a way, Marathon reminds me of games like Dark Souls, where you're thrown into battle and have to learn how to play it the hard way. You will die a lot early on, and it will feel rough, but losing is learning in many of these cases. And when you finally have some matches where you're able to use what you've earned to help you take out several other Runners and get home with some top-tier loot to advance your progression, the satisfaction feels similar to finally taking out that tough boss fight that's been plaguing you for hours...especially as the seconds tick down in every 25-to-30 minute round, where it's extract or lose it all.

But as the game gets more and more hardcore, and filters out the most casual and less-skilled players over time, that sweatfest may become too much to bear for most players to enjoy. Me? Even as someone whose best multiplayer skill days are behind them, and with all of the plentiful suffering Marathon has to offer within, I find myself wanting to squeeze in one last run all the time lately.

A ghost trapped in a summoning circle in front of a flaming cross in Phasmophobia

If you think you've mastered the art of ghost hunting in Phasmophobia, you may be ready to put your skills to the test. Weekly challenge modes are a great way to find out just how good you are.

These special trials modify how the game works, usually with rules that make the experience a lot harder. Successfully finishing the challenge gets you plenty of XP and cash, so it's well worth the effort. Here's the weekly challenge in Phasmophobia and everything you need to know to beat it.

Phasmophobia weekly challenge mode (March 22-29)

survival of the fittest challenge in phasmophobia
Screenshot by Destructoid

From March 22 to 29, the weekly challenge is Survival of the Fittest in Phasmophobia. In this challenge, you've got no sanity at all, no way to restore it, and no evidence to work with. Everything in this trial is working against you, so it's one of the toughest.

How to complete the weekly challenge in Phasmophobia

To finish the weekly challenge mode in Phasmophobia, you need to correctly identify the ghost present on the featured map three times. The specific changes in each trial mode vary, but your goal is always the same.

All Survival of the Fittest weekly challenge modifiers in Phasmophobia

This challenge mode has several specific rules that modify the way the contract functions. Here are all the key details you need to know.

  • Map: 42 Edgefield Road
  • Starting sanity: Zero percent
  • Sanity drain speed: 200 percent
  • Sanity medication restoration: Zero percent
  • Evidence given: None
  • Setup time: None
  • Player speed: 100 percent
  • Ghost speed: 100 percent
  • Weather: Random
  • Fuse box state: Starts on and is marked on the map
  • Cursed Possession: Monkey Paw
  • Equipment: Mix of Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III items.

    • Tier I: Head Gear, Salt, Firelight, Incense, Crucifix, Spirit Box, and Sound Sensor.
    • Tier II: Sound Recorder, Flashlight, Motion Sensor, Parabolic Microphone, Igniter, and Photo Camera.
    • Tier III: EMF Reader and Sanity Medication.

  • Missing Equipment: DOTS Projector, Ghost Writing Book, Thermometer, UV Light, Video Camera, Tripod, and two Sanity Medication.

Phasmophobia Survival of the Fittest weekly challenge mode tips

This is one of the trickier challenges you can attempt in Phasmophobia, so here are some of the best tips you can employ to help you get it done.

  • Bring all your equipment to the front door. Before you start investigating, bring all of the items you need to the front door. You don't have a setup time, so the ghost can technically come after you as soon as you set foot inside if you're unlucky and it happens to be a Demon. If you prepare a bit by gathering the items you need near the front door, you'll save time and be more likely to succeed.
  • Place Crucifixes in the ghost room. Once you know where the ghost is, place your Crucifixes around the room for protection. This powerful tool can block a few ghost hunts, so make sure you use it to your advantage.
  • Watch for unofficial evidence, behaviors, and patterns. The ghost won't grant you any official evidence in this trial, so you have to rely on unofficial evidence to figure out what type of ghost is present. Examples of what to search for include specific noises picked up by the Sound Recorder, Ghost Orbs left behind by The Mimic, and the Wraith's refusal to ever step in Salt.
  • Use Sound Sensors and Motion Sensors. Since you have no sanity, the ghost will try to hunt you constantly in this trial, which means you need to track down the ghost room as efficiently as possible. A Thermometer is usually my preferred method, but you don't have one here, so try relying on sensors instead. Place them down all around the first floor, second floor, and basement, then head to the truck to see where you pick up sound and movement.
  • Play with friends. Your odds of success are a lot better with allies helping you through this tricky trial. With additional ghost hunters at your side, you can explore the map more quickly, work together to gather evidence, and continue the investigation even if you perish.
  • Don't give up. Since all equipment is provided for free, there's nothing to lose in this challenge. Because of this, you can keep trying without worrying about losing money or equipment. Give each contract your all and keep at it until you get it done.
  • Make an educated guess. Some ghosts are just easier to identify than others, so luck plays a large role in how easy or tough this trial is. You should always make a guess before you leave, then reroll to try again, even if you have no idea what the correct ghost type is.

When does the challenge mode change in Phasmophobia?

The challenge mode changes every Monday at 12am UTC, which translates to 6pm CT every Sunday. You have a full week to tackle each challenge mode when it's available. All challenge modes return regularly since they're on a rotating schedule, so if you don't get to finish one, you can always try it again in the future.

Next weekly challenge mode in Phasmophobia

The next weekly challenge mode, which will run for a full week from March 29 to April 5, will be Primitive. This challenge mode will begin as soon as this week's featured one ends.

A temple built into the rock formations of a red desert in Crimson Desert.

Bismuth is a difficult resource to get in Crimson Desert, and you'll need to look in specific locations to find some. When you're around the material, you'll be able to identify it from its signature silver base and shimmer.

Thanks to its mystical power, you can't mine Bismuth with ordinary tools. This guide will help you find Bismuth and mine it as much as you need.

How to mine Bismuth in Crimson Desert

While most of the mining in Crimson Desert is done with the pickaxe, it won't work on Bismuth. You'll first need to use Lightning Surge to break the magic barrier that surrounds Bismuth deposits. You won't be able to mine as long as the barrier is active.

Naturally, you'll need Lightning at level 1 before you head to a location where you can find Bismuth (more on that later). Press RT+B/RB+Circle to generate an electric field. Release it to bring down the barrier. To mine Bismuth, you need to hit the spot where the electric field hits.

There are several locations in Crimson Desert, but the best one can be found near the Scholastone Institute. Go southwest from Hernand City, and you'll find the Institute on the map. The ore is found along the mountain cliffs near a waterfall.

As an alternative, you can also look to find Bismuth in the peaks of Everfrost. Usually, you'll find plenty of Bismuth Ore in the locations mentioned above. Hence, make sure to have enough space in your inventory so that you can carry as much ore as required.

BitLife Lucky Duck challenge image

March is the month of luck in BitLife, with the Lucky Duck challenge testing how far you can push it. It starts simple enough, but this one ramps quickly, especially as your character reaches adulthood. If you thought 777 was a lucky number, wait to see what's in store here.

Like most weekly trials, this one pushes you to check off some fairly tough tasks. You're not given much guidance for getting them done, so if you're struggling, here's how to complete the Lucky Duck challenge in BitLife.

BitLife Lucky Duck challenge guide

BitLife's Lucky Duck challenge has five tasks to complete:

  • Be born in Ireland.
  • Receive $777+ from your parents.
  • Win $7,777,777+ at the casino.
  • Hook up with 7+ people without getting an STI.
  • Have 7+ children.

Although you won't need any special career packs or expansions for this challenge, you will need a lot of in-game cash. If you don't have money, you'll need extra luck once your character hits the casino. Otherwise, this one is all about patience and determination.

Be born in Ireland in BitLife

The first step to completing BitLife's Lucky Duck challenge is to create a character born in Ireland. It doesn't matter what your starting gender, town, or talents are as long as you pick Ireland as your country. However, being born into a wealthy or generous family will help you later.

Once you create your character, age up until they're old enough to date and visit the casino. Working part-time and full-time jobs will help you accumulate enough money for later tasks, but you can start with a low amount if you want to challenge yourself.

Receive money from your parents in BitLife

Your next step is to ask for at least $777 from your parents. Or, well, €777 in this case. You can do this by heading into Relationships, choosing one of your parents, and selecting "Ask for Money." Repeat this process as many times as you need to until you've achieved the total amount required to complete this task.

The amount they'll give you depends on their wealth and generosity. Low generosity means they're unlikely to provide anything, even if you live in a rich household. Similarly, if their money is low but generosity is high, they'll give you what they can. Ideally, you'll have parents with high stats in both, but you can also make do with what you've got.

Win money at the casino in BitLife

Next up, you need to make $7,777,777 in casino winnings through any means necessary, which is where things get pretty tricky. In BitLife, accessing the casino requires heading into Activities, selecting the Gamble option, and choosing any casino game you wish. If you have the casino expansion, you'll have eight options to choose from. For the rest of us, Blackjack is the way to go.

Closing and reopening the BitLife app when you lose rarely works, but you can try it if you've had success with it before. Being a millionaire (or billionaire) will also help, as putting down this amount in a few goes is much easier than just tossing down a few hundred at a time.

To get this task done, you really just have to keep at it until you manage to get the required amount. This one really comes down to luck and random chance, which unfortunately means there's no way to make it any easier.

Hook up and have children in BitLife

The last two tasks go hand in hand, as they require you to hook up with seven random characters without catching STIs and have seven children. Both of these require going into the Activities page, selecting the Love tab, and choosing the Hook Up option. While you can have children with someone you're married to, you can also do this with seven flings. Having the Golden Pacifier also helps here, but it isn't required.

The best way to avoid catching any ailments is to use protection and avoid anyone who "has some craziness down there." Protection will help in most cases, while high health stats will carry you the rest of the way. If you do end up catching something, try this task again another year until you get with at least seven people.

If you want to knock out two birds with one stone, you can take the risk of using no protection to have children more quickly. You're much more likely to catch something, but at least you'll have an easier time racing against your character's natural clock if they have one. How you do this is up to you, but I'd suggest doing one first before the other.

Once you knock out all five tasks, you'll prove you're the luckiest BitLife player out there, officially checking off the Lucky Duck challenge and receiving a mysterious cosmetic prize for your efforts. There are plenty of other trials waiting to be tackled next, though, like the Mamba challenge, the Kahlo My World challenge, and the Titanic challenge.

Palia player in purple dress sitting by water near a flower you can forage

The seasonal Bulletin Board asks you to obtain various types of eggs to complete the bundles this time around in Palia. One of the many colors you need to find in Green Eggs, which can be rather tough to get your hands on.

Eggs are required to finish all of the seasonal bundles, but you're not actually told how to go about finding them. The process is unique for each color, so it's a difficult task to work through. If you're unsure what needs to be done, here's how to get Green Eggs in Palia.

Where to find Green Eggs in Palia

Green Eggs are earned by foraging in Palia. Anytime you pick up a forageable item, there's a chance a Green Egg may be added to your inventory with it. Unfortunately, this drop is not guaranteed, so there's no way to ensure you find it.

Instead, all you can do is go foraging as much and as often as possible to have the best chances of finding Green Eggs. Collecting them really comes down to luck, as you may find several in a row, or it might instead take many attempts before you come across even one. Luckily, foraging is one of the easier tasks to tackle, and is generally quite quick, so Green Eggs are one of the most accessible variations of this item.

You can forage anything you like from around the explorable areas in Palia to have a shot at finding Green Eggs. This includes flowers, mushrooms, spices, seeds, and other such items. Chopping down trees or bushes also counts as foraging, which means you can use these tasks to try and find Green Eggs, too.

Foraging can only drop Green Eggs, no other colors, so it's the best way to get your hands on these eggs. You can technically also work on mining, ranching, and gardening to get them, though. These three tasks drop all egg colors randomly, so you never know what you'll get. Working on them is great for farming all types of eggs, but it's not a reliable method for seeking out one color.

Green Eggs can be turned in at the Bulletin Board to complete one of the rows featured in the Spring's Bounty Bundle in the Toadstool Tales update. You need 25 Green Eggs to finish this bundle, alongside 20 Whitestone Slabs, 10 Iron Bars, and one Onyx.

The other items featured in this row all require you to do some mining, so you can't really work on earning Green Eggs and gathering the rest of the required materials at the same time. Mining could drop this color of egg, but it's not guaranteed to do so, which means this is one of the tougher bundles to get done, as all other rows have tasks that correspond with the egg color.

If you want to fill out the full board, you'll want to learn how to get Red Eggs, Yellow Eggs, and Blue Eggs next. Hunting for eggs can get tiring and tedious, though, so consider taking a break by working through the key storyline mission Do Not Go Gentle.
