| PCGamesN Fri Oct 15 11:47:37 UTC 2021 | | Blizzard has peeled back the curtain on the technical side of Diablo 2: Resurrected's server issues, which have plagued the new PC game since launch. Community manager Adam Fletcher has posted a lengthy explainer on Diablo 2's blog sharing what's happened, why it's happened, and what the team is doing to tackle these issues going forward. Alongside surges of popularity overwhelming the servers, Fletcher says that part of the issue comes down to legacy code. In staying "true to the original game", the team kept a lot of the old code, with one legacy service in particular "struggling to keep up with modern player behaviour". "We mention 'modern player behaviour' because it's an interesting point to think about," Fletcher says. "In 2001, there wasn't nearly as much content on the internet around how to play Diablo II 'correctly' (Baal runs for XP, Pindleskin/Ancient Sewers/etc for magic find, etc). Today, however, a new player can look up any number of amazing content creators who can teach them how to play the game in different ways, many of them including lots of database load in the form of creating, loading, and destroying games in quick succession. Though we did foresee this - with players making fresh characters on fresh servers, working hard to get their magic-finding items - we vastly underestimated the scope we derived from beta testing." | PCGamesN Fri Oct 15 11:33:32 UTC 2021 | | In many ways, building a gaming PC is a bit like playing with Lego. Sure, the process behind choosing and assembling PC parts is a lot more complicated, and nerve-racking when it comes to installing gaming CPUs, but the way modern rigs snap together is arguably as cathartic as playing with plastic bricks. Thanks to the Chinese brand Galax, building a new rig can now actually involve playing with the creative toy, as the company is set to release Lego compatible RGB gaming RAM. Spotted by Expreview, Galax's new Gamer branded DDR5 RAM isn't just inspired by Danish building blocks, it also features RGB lighting built into the interlocking strip at the top. Naturally, this means you can use clear Lego bits to create a unique lighting setup, as each piece should act similarly to a light pipe. Failing that, you can also just snap any bricks or mini-figures you like, although admittedly, building a Lego house onto these might look a bit like that scene from Inception. Toy aesthetics aside, Galax's Gamer DDR5 RGB memory will initially launch as 2x16GB kits, but 2x8GB and 2x32GB configurations will release in the future The RAM will also offer a channel speed of 4800MT/s, but Galax hasn't said whether overclocked alternatives will also release at some point down the line. | PCGamesN Fri Oct 15 11:26:58 UTC 2021 | | Just a few days ago, Activision announced its new 'Ricochet' anti-cheat system that will soon make its way to both Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Vanguard. Unfortunately, according to Twitter user AntiCheatPD, the Ricochet driver has reportedly leaked and has already found its way into the hands of cheat manufacturers and other bad actors. Ricochet is a kernel level driver, similar to the anti-cheat method used in Valorant, that looks out for any attempts made by applications on a gaming PC to meddle with Call of Duty's game code. This means of combating cheaters has proven highly effective but naturally raises privacy concerns given its level of system access. While the leak is undoubtedly troublesome, to make matters worse, the driver's protections are reportedly "not that great and will be reversed easily", according to AntiCheatPD. If true, this would make circumventing Ricochet a much easier task for cheat manufacturers. Fortunately, there's a theory that might provide a silver lining. | PCGamesN Fri Oct 15 10:56:26 UTC 2021 | | Text size is still a common theme among player concerns about many of the biggest and best PC games around, with subtitles and other in-game text often appearing on the smaller side in newer releases. The good news, though, is that one of the best RPGs of our time has just got easier to read with the addition of some font-enlarging gameplay updates. Disco Elysium's Version e6fdd6fa patch - catchy, I know - is only billed as a small update by developer ZA/UM, but the positive changes it makes could be pretty significant for a lot of players who struggle to make out in-game text. The patch notes list just a handful of tweaks, but two important ones - the first of which is announced in grand capitals - is "BIGGER FONT SIZES". Additionally, other adjustments fold in "bigger and cleaner" UI elements and "lots of visual fixes for smoother, more coherent visual experience". While Disco Elysium is now fully voiced through its Final Cut edition, its gameplay and story still hinge on a significant amount of text, so this is a really key and positive change for those who'd love to see it offer options for bigger fonts. | PCGamesN Fri Oct 15 10:03:16 UTC 2021 | | Two new indie city-building games have just hit Steam Early Access, which look like they'll have big appeal for those who like a retro or sci-fi flavour to their, well, city building. One is Silicon City - a throwback city builder with a '90s-style vibe, and the other is Sphere - Flying Cities, which has you establish and protect a society housed in a bubble in space. Both city builders have just come to Valve's platform in Early Access this week, each with a discount of 15% off their regular price. Silicon City is a "tribute to the good ol' city builders from the '90s", indie developer Polycorne explains, which draws on classic features and mechanics you might remember from days of city building past, like a "grid-based playground with procedural development" and various construction types (residential, public service, shop, and office buildings, plus parks and other cultural spaces). You'll also have to manage your city's traffic and the evolution of its citizens - or "silizens", as they're called in the game. You play as a mayor who starts from scratch with little besides empty land, so you'll need to build it up, make sure everything's hooked up with electricity, entertainment, and work, while keeping it all financially healthy - and making sure you're popular enough to be re-elected when the time comes. |
