Thankfully, we don't need to guess when Valve will rain discounts from the heavens, as its Steamworks website (via PC Gamer) lists the periods in which all the remaining Steam sales will take place. While further details on the autumn and winter sales are mostly scarce, Valve confirms that its Steam Awards will make a return in some form. Meanwhile, the Halloween sale will feature a "special focus on content updates and in-game events in celebration of the theme." The upcoming winter sale will undoubtedly be a special one for Valve, with the company's Steam Deck handheld gaming PC launching in the same month. It's hard at work reviewing the compatibility of all 50,000 Steam games with its new device, to which a large portion of the top 100 games on the platform already work great ahead of release. A long-standing member of our guide to the best turn-based strategy games on PC, Battle for Wesnoth is a free PC game that's open source, and provides a low-frills, high-fantasy strategy romp with 17 solo campaigns and plenty of multiplayer maps. It just received a new major milestone update - 1.16 - which features campaign improvements, a reworked Dunefolk faction, AI changes, and many quality-of-life changes around how players actually download and play the strategy game. There are also two new multiplayer maps: Isle of Mists is a co-op survival scenario, and World Conquest is a multiplayer campaign with RPG elements for up to three players. The latter addition used to be an unofficial add-on, but has now been formally integrated into the game's code. Battle for Wesnoth was conceived in 2003 by David White, and has since grown to encompass hundreds of contributors, from unofficial third-party content creators, to a democratically elected project manager who oversees the game through major development cycles. You head into a house tormented by Daedric forces in the stone city of Markarth, and you have to take some, well, pretty tough actions to resolve the problem. The decisions you have to make might not sit so well with those Dragonborn determined to take a more virtuous path through their adventures, but the good news is there's now a "good guy" route available thanks to a quest expansion mod. Some minor story spoilers follow, folks. Prolific modder JaySerpa has previously created a bunch of impressive Skyrim mods that add more immersive interactions, a fully voiced, expanded overhaul of the famous Paarthurnax quest, and even the ability pet Skyrim's doggos. Now, they've launched a mod that "expands Molag Bal's daedric quest, giving you the option of choosing an alternative 'good guy' route to finish the vanilla quest". The creation is fully voiced using lines from the base game spliced together, and even includes new scenes made specifically for the expansion. Plus, there's an optional chance of getting a new "paladin-priest-warrior" type follower to bring along on your adventures when the quest's done and dusted. Sure, Valve's accounts feature might feature effective two-factor authentication, but in comparison to services like Discord with its mobile QR code option, Steam feels a little antiquated. Thankfully, it looks like Valve is already working on sprucing up its sign-in system, and the update could launch alongside the Steam Deck. According to SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik, Valve recently updated its Steam storefront code with what appears to be new log-in elements. Most clues alluding to the update come in the form of high-level code and plain text, with the likes of "sign in with QR" and "Awaiting your confirmation via the Steam Mobile app", which provides a glimpse of things to come. The new system also references Steam Guard, meaning the new sign-in system likely features authenticator app integration. Let's be honest; if you regularly use Steam Guard, you probably use the mobile app, especially since the email alternative often leads to rummaging through your spam folder for a code. We're slowly coming to the end of the League of Legends' 2021 patch schedule, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty still ahead. The headline of this patch is the raft of Preseason 2022 changes. Riot says that the tweaks will be available on the PBE for the next four weeks to ensure the team gets all the feedback it needs before going live with the final set of updates in November. The developer also says that things are pretty early, so expect changes to things like icons, item and effect names, visual and sound effects, stat values, and more. That's not all you're getting, though. Jayce and Vi are also getting some rather dapper looking Arcane skins, while Blizcrank will have a Victorious skin, as victorious is he. Treyarch and Raven Software are sending Cold War out with a bang, adding a series of unusual, interesting weapons in the final seasons. The LAPA SMG is the latest, and one of the most intriguing yet. Several of its barrel attachments alter the LAPA's damage and fire rate. That variety makes the LAPA a very fun gun to customize and play around with. Of course, there is always a best configuration. Once you've had your fun and are ready to sweat, we're here to help. The LAPA's range isn't great, but up close it has monstrous potential. Its high neck and head multipliers make for a skill-dependant weapon, but in the right hands, with the right build, the LAPA fries. Here's our build of choice: As usual, we're starting off with an Agency Suppressor. Added range and bullet velocity on a suppressor remain nigh-impossible to pass up. As long as you're using a Cold War weapon, you'll want this attachment. Things get interesting with the barrel. We've gone with the Rifled Barrel, which provides the most consistent damage profile. The LAPA very much relies on chest, neck, and headshots, but the Rifled Barrel helps even out the damage to the stomach and limbs. All of the barrels are frankly pretty close in power though, so try a few and see what feels right. Read more
