Kotaku Thursday, January 13, 2022 3:45 PM In Halo Infinite, as in previous Halo games, you're often carted from one key location to the next in a transport vehicle called a pelican. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 3:30 PM We've known for years that Dying Light 2 would feature co-op, and now, just a few weeks before the game's due to launch, the devs have finally shown off the feature in action. Dying Light 2 offers four-player cooperative play, as briefly demonstrated in the final devstream before release. One player will serve as the host for the multiplayer session, and they'll keep any story progress made in co-op sessions. The devs have confirmed you'll be able to finish the game in multiplayer, too. Your friends will keep any items or character progression earned in co-op. When you come to a story choice, everyone can vote on what you should do - but the host has the final say on the decision. Techland is also showing off an array of console comparisons here across current and last-gen platforms, and while that maybe isn't the most relevant to PC players, it at least offers an idea of what the game will look like on older hardware. The Dying Light 2 system requirements have been out there for a bit, if you're looking to see whether your PC is up to snuff. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 1:52 PM Whether or not you can beat Halo Infinite on Legendary without firing a bullet is a question that only you can answer. The speedrunner behind YouTube channel Simply & Slick, known simply as Tom, has demonstrated that it's possible, however. Tom provided a video of the achievement earlier this month, and has provided some additional details on how it works in a new interview. According to the challenge rules, melee is acceptable, meaning punches, gravity hammers, and energy swords are all okay. Throwing Halo Infinite's new fusion coils is acceptable, too. This is a challenge taking advantage of speedrun tech, so Tom spends a lot of it speeding past enemies with creative use of the grappleshot, as well as a few clip tricks to bypass portions of the levels. Tom tells Kotaku that this run counted up about 100 deaths. About half of that came on the final wave of enemies during the final boss encounter, as Tom says "I would estimate at least 50 of them were on the final wave alone." The next step? A run with every single skull difficulty modifier on. You can read more about Tom's process at that link. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 1:08 PM It's not Titanfall 3. With that bandage ripped off, it does seem that Respawn, the developer behind Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is at work on a new triple-A, single-player FPS game. The studio publicly announced development on a new IP last year, and a few details on what direction they're taking have started to leak out. "It is (surprise) a triple-A first-person shooter that is still in pretty early development," reporter Jeff Grubb says in his latest GrubbSnax podcast (paywalled). "Looking for 2024 at the earliest, probably 2025." The project's lead departed Respawn earlier this month, but the team is "continuing to prototype." Grubb says this is Respawn's "strategy. This is how they make games. They prototype them for a few years. A solid block of years they spend figuring out what the game is going to look like. Right now, they have a sort of guidance of 'triple-A, first-person shooter,' and there's a couple of key words: mobility and style." |
PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 3:46 PM Despite the Oculus Quest 2 setting the bar for the best VR headset extremely high, we can expect even better devices in 2022. Meta (formerly known as Facebook) seems to have big plans for the virtual reality scene, and a new headset codenamed Project Cambria is at the epicentre of its metaverse ambitions. While we suspect that Project Cambria is the new title for the previously rumoured Oculus Quest Pro, Meta's keeping the device's true identity close to its chest. However, it's widely believed that it'll offer a high-end mixed reality experience, and will distance itself from the Oculus Quest gaming headsets. At the company's debut Meta Connect conference in October 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Project Cambria as a "completely new advanced and high-end product." That description is perhaps more fluffy than helpful, but we've collated everything we know about the Oculus Quest Pro in an effort to decipher the Meta headset's price, release date, and specs. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 1:02 PM The Dying Light 2 system requirements have finally arrived, giving you ample time to prepare your gaming PC ahead of its February release date. While the barrier to entry for Techland's new zombie game is quite low, the hardware requirements quickly become much steeper if you plan to turn on the game's ray tracing features. Yes, that's features plural. Ray traced global illumination, reflections, and shadows can all be turned on to push Dying Light's visual fidelity even higher, providing you have a compatible GPU. However, turning any of these settings on will incur a performance cost. To combat this, Techland recommends you equip your system with one of the best graphics cards on the market, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. Thankfully, Nvidia DLSS upscaling technology should help to boost fps if your rig's struggling to maintain your target frame rate. Unfortunately, there's no word of AMD FSR support, so those with Radeon GPUs aren't quite as fortunate. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 12:22 PM If you're one of the many whose New Year's resolution is to take better care of your health, you might want to consider how your gaming set-up plays into that. Sitting in a chair for hours on end that's not designed for the purpose can play havoc with your back, but luckily for you, right now you can grab the X Rocker Trident Pedestal 4.1 gaming chair at an impressive 37% off on Amazon. So what makes this gaming chair a good choice, besides the price? Well, for one thing it comes with an integrated 4.1 wireless audio system that encompasses headrest mounted speakers and a backrest subwoofer. This will allow you to become more deeply immersed in the soundscapes of your favourite PC games. Plus, it's compatible with most setups, and is relatively easy to set up wirelessly. Sound is one thing, but comfort is another. Rest assured that this chair comes with two padded armrests to ensure that your arms can sit comfortably while you play. Meanwhile, the pedestal swivel base has been designed to give gamers maximum levels of support and mobility during even the longest play sessions. |
PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:15 AM Looking for the best Genshin Impact builds? Genshin Impact characters are obtainable through banners, which give you a chance to pull various characters and weapons through Wishes. Some characters are more powerful than others - as our Genshin Impact tier list will attest - but no matter who you pull, we're here to help you get the best performance out of them. When putting together a Genshin Impact team, you'll need to take into account Genshin Impact elemental reactions - each character specialises in the use of one particular element, apart from the Traveler, who is able to wield both Anemo and Geo. Swapping your teammates out and using different elements in sequence produces powerful effects, so we recommend using a varied lineup. Some characters are best suited to damage, while others perform better in a support role - depending on the build you choose, you can capitalise on different aspects of their toolkit to help them serve your team better. In order to buff your characters, you need to equip them with Genshin Impact artifacts and Genshin Impact weapons. You can also upgrade your character's Constellations, but this requires obtaining a duplicate of that character from a Wish. Here are the best Genshin Impact builds for each character: RELATED LINKS: Play Genshin Impact for free, Genshin Impact character tier list, Genshin Impact leveling guide |
PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:20 AM If you watch people play Grand Theft Auto V on Twitch or YouTube, chances are you'll come across the Chaos mod. Every 30 seconds, the mod triggers a random event that may impede the player's progress - sometimes all the nearby vehicles go boom, other times all the citizens around you will stop and do a little dance. The mod also comes with Twitch integration, allowing people watching your stream to vote on what will happen to you next. Now, though, a modder has brought a similar experience to Red Dead Redemption 2. Shdel's suitably named Chaos mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 activates a random effect every 45 seconds. Plenty of them will look familiar, but I'd still encourage you to check out the complete list. There's a decent chance pig farmers may turn up to kidnap you if you're unlucky, or a giant donkey might spawn in and start tootling around. Much like GTA 5's Chaos mod, this one also comes with Twitch integration if you want to put control in the hands of your chat room. If you fancy a wild journey through Red Dead Redemption 2 solo, though, then that's cool, too. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 1:02 PM To say that Ubisoft's The Settlers reboot is carrying some weight on its shoulders is no understatement. The 30-year-old RTS series hasn't had a new entry in over a decade, and this latest offering was originally slated to release in the before times of 2019. It was pushed back to 2020, before simply being delayed "until further notice", but now it's back in the public eye and releasing in just a couple of months. So, was the extra time enough? And is there still a place for The Settlers in the current pantheon of strategy gaming greats? This series has always walked a fine line between the scale of a Warcraft-like RTS and Anno's careful economic management. The main challenge it faces is that both of those sub genres have evolved in the past ten years. Anno 1800 elevated the legacy strategy series to new heights, and it's now rightly regarded as a powerhouse economic simulator, offering both a rich setting and a deep, diverse feature set. It's about to embark on a fourth season of DLC, despite the developers only originally having plans for two. Similarly, indie RTS games like Northgard are skipping more laborious components like production chains to focus on their setting and moment-to-moment decision-making. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:01 AM It's Thursday, and you know what that means – another round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store. This week, you can grab the 4X game Galactic Civilizations III, and as ever, Epic has revealed next week's freebie, too. Relicta is a physics-based puzzle game that's set on the moon. You'll be able to grab Relicta from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page on Thursday, January 20 at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT. It'll be there for one full week, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for. The store page describes Relicta as "a first-person physics-based puzzle game where you need to creatively combine magnetism and gravity to unravel the secrets of Chandra Base." Alongside heaps of puzzles, you've got a narrative to experience while you trek through vacant environments on the moon. RELATED LINKS: Upcoming PC Games |
PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:54 AM Expanding on its teaser from last year, developer IO Interactive today announced that Hitman VR will come to PC next week. While VR support is only coming to Hitman 3, you'll be able to explore and take out targets across all the maps from the prior two Hitman games, providing you have them in your library. Moving away from Hitman 3's PlayStation VR exclusivity has enabled IO Interactive to make use of the extra features and horsepower available in the best VR headsets. New for PC, you can now control Agent 47's hands individually and can partake in one of the game's best mechanics that was sorely missed in VR: throwing stuff. Better still, the game will recognise the manner in which you throw an object, so we can expect some sick trick shot compilations to make their way to the internet in the near future. IO Interactive hasn't specified a list of Hitman VR compatible headsets yet, but says it plans to support "the most popular hardware to deliver the best experience to as many players as possible." We can expect full details just before launch. RELATED LINKS: Best SSD for gaming, How to build a gaming PC, Best gaming CPU |
PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:06 AM This year's Awesome Games Done Quick is off to a roaring start, speedrunning its way to raising a million dollars in record time. The charity event passed the $1 million mark the evening of January 12, with three full days left in the marathon of speedrunning streams. According to a redditor called GDQ Stats-Breakdown-Man, this is the fastest any GDQ event has ever pulled in $1 million in donations. "I can confirm that AGDQ22 has raised the fastest $1,000,000 donated in a GDQ event ever by just under 24 hours," they wrote in a post to the speedrun subreddit. The milestone came while Blaku was showcasing some ridiculously difficult Rocket League custom workshop levels. The host and commentators paused the action to check on the donation totals, realising they were close to a million. The timing was perfect - as you might expect in an event that's all about precision timing - and everyone on stream got appropriately hyped up when the official word came in that they'd crossed the threshold. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:39 AM It's a big day for Agent 47. IO Interactive has just hosted its Hitman 3 Year Two reveal stream, giving us a peek at what's coming up for the stealth game in the months ahead. Alongside news that Hitman 3 and the just-unveiled Hitman Trilogy are headed to Steam and Game Pass, and a showcase of snazzy new technological improvements, a brand-new single-player mode has been revealed, which draws on the roguelike genre. Called Freelancer, the shiny new mode is due to land sometime in spring this year. This "introduces roguelike elements, strategic planning, and a customisable safehouse", IOI explains in a Year Two reveal blog, though you can also hear about it from the devs in the timestamped clip below. In the mode, you'll have a safehouse where you don't have everything served up to you on a platter before you dive into a mission, as is the case in the three games' usual single-player locations. Instead, Agent 47 will need to sink his teeth into some pre-mission planning. Well, Diana deserves a day off, y'know. Principal designer Torbjørn Vinther Christensen highlights in the stream that Freelancer adds something to the role-playing aspect of the game, because "you feel like you are Hitman, basically". PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:07 AM After months of the community asking for character outfits, Genshin Impact gives players the chance to change their character's outfits using the skins system. This system was introduced in the Genshin Impact 1.6 update, which also welcomed the Anemo Sword user Kazuha to the game. Ayaka, the Cyro Sword user, arrived in the second banner in Genshin Impact 1.6. One of the big questions surrounding the skin system was how skins were planned to be distributed. As Genshin Impact locks characters behind gacha mechanics, players were worried that skins may be sold using the same system. There are two methods to unlock events: purchase the skin for 1680 Genesis Crystals, or complete a specific event. If you happen to miss the event, the skin will make its way to the Character Outfit Shop in the future. Genshin Impact 2.4 has introduced new skins to the game for the first time since the 1.6 update back in June. Here are all of the Genshin Impact outfits so far. PCGamesN Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:39 AM Want to purchase a random item from a malfunctioning vending machine in Fortnite? In most popular battle royale games, you find loot by opening chests or scattered across the ground, but Fortnite also gives players the option to purchase items from NPCs and vending machines. One of this week's season challenges asks you to buy an item from a malfunctioning vending machine to earn some experience to earn Fortnite skins and free Fortnite V-Bucks in the battle pass. The tricky bit here is finding a malfunctioning vending machine in the first place; while vending machines all have fixed locations on the map, they aren't all broken. You can tell if a specific vending machine is working or not by looking at it (it'll look, er, broken) or by looking for the vending machine's minimap icon when you're close enough. An exclamation mark on the minimap leads to a red malfunctioning vending machine. In this guide, we'll show you every vending machine location on the Fortnite map. However, it's up to you to find one that is malfunctioning - and you can't force it to malfunction by beating it up, in case you were wondering. Before you even begin searching for these vending machines, make sure you have 100 gold in order to purchase a random item If you're a bit short on cash, you can check out our Fortnite gold bars guide for more information. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 4:47 PM Riot Games have outlined their strategy for their next five years, saying they think of themselves "not as a games company but as a gamer's company." The lengthy post, credited to Riot CEO Nicolo Laurent, outlines not what they specifically intend to make, but the kinds of things they want to make and the internal changes designed to make it happen. The post also acknowledges Riot Games' recent history, including their settlement last month of a gender discrimination lawsuit stretching back to 2018. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 2:37 PM Lockpicking is a frequently maligned component of many games, but as FPS minigames go I've always had a soft spot for it. For years, people have sought to understand English culture and history by consulting such artifacts. When future generations wish to understand what England was like in the early 21st century, they'll simply need to play a Duke Nukem 3D level. Since June 2021, Dan Douglas has been making a DN3D level which captures facets of the real England: town centres, Wetherspoons, Greggs, a sausage roll nativity, Michael Gove dancing, lads, absolute madmen, life under Covid, performative patriotism, the Brexit bus, and so much more. It's astonishing. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:41 AM Roguelike platformer Spelunky 2 is out now on PC Game Pass. I'm less excited and more angry, actually. This is because it's my nemesis, a game I know is good but I'm absolutely shocking at. Alongside it, the new Left 4 Dead-like co-op shooter The Anacrusis enters early access later today and will be on Game Pass from the start. Can't wait to fall into a pit of spikes with one, then blub about my misfortunes in the other as I pew pew aliens. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 11:00 AM It's been over a decade since a core game in The Settlers series last made landfall on PC, and during that time the real-time management landscape has arguably changed quite a bit. There have been some great building games that have risen up, and even developer Blue Byte (now Ubisoft Dusseldorf)'s own Anno series has staked a powerful claim to the city-building throne. But this incarnation of The Settlers isn't so much about connecting to the series' past as it is about laying down foundations for the future. It's had a slightly rocky road to launch, suffering several delays and refunded pre-orders after being postponed indefinitely back in 2020, but at long last this reboot of the classic city-building conquest-me-do is finally ready to beat down our door and come barrelling in. It's launching in full on March 17th, and I've been hands on with an early version of the upcoming closed beta build that will be running from January 20th-24th. So settle in, folks. Here's how it's shaping up. |

The Electronic Wireless Show Podcast will make no effort to change or better ourselves; this is our promise to you, listener. For our first episode of the new year we're doing the traditional "what games are we most looking forwards to" episode. Yes, our most anticipated games. There is very little crossover, and lots of orc chat. Before that, though, we're lucky enough to have scored an interview with the "It's me, Blorko" guy. Yes, we have the man who came up with this winter's most fashionable Marvel-based viral tweet, live and on the podcast (I mean, technically he is on the podcast every week but this week we ask him about the Blorko thing for like 20 minutes). |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:45 AM I wouldn't call it a new year's resolution – mine for 2022 are learning piano and using fewer dashes – but generally I want to try new things with my PC. And one such opportunity recently presented itself via the new Turtle Beach VelocityOne Flight yoke controller: I was going to learn how to fly. In Microsoft Flight Simulator, obviously, but this honking great console of handles, buttons, joysticks and levers definitely looked like the right tool for the job. A simple flight stick this is not: there's a full 180-degree yoke handle, an integrated display that can data like flight times, and a modular (but included as standard) throttle quadrant. The kind of thing you might own if your PC resembles a bisected turbine. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:30 AM On a stretch of futuristic tarmac, something clicked. Yellow quest markers hadn't built my relationships in Cyberpunk 2077. When a job needed doing, then they'd steer me in the right direction. But for those initial sparks of story, my cellphone had been key. Chats and texts buzzed into my brain at all hours. "Hey V", "V, got a minute?", "V!" Characters would get in contact with me, not the other way around. And I liked that. In fact, I'd say it helped build a living, breathing world more than Night City's towering skyscrapers and moving billboards. More than, perhaps, any other big RPG I've played over the last couple of years. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, January 13, 2022 10:06 AM A new map, a new roguelikelike mode, PC VR, and a new take on one of Hitman's more controversial elements are all coming in Hitman 3's Year 2, developers Io Interactive detailed today. They've just held a stream revealing plans for the second year of support and content, giving a look at the new Elusive Target Arcade mode (this time, the murders are permanent, not ephemeral) and announcing Freelancer mode. That will give Ian Hitman a safe house again, and send him out to take down organisations through chains of missions with randomised elements. Plus, the whole trilogy is coming to Game Pass. Lots of news. |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Thursday, January 13, 2022 4:30 PM Although life is often unpredictable, some aspects of it will forever remain constant. We all grow up, we all eventually end up in the dirt, and Star Citizen will never come out. This project, which began production all the way back in 2011 and earned over $400 million in crowdfunding, has become more of a meme than an actual video game thanks to its perpetual vaporware status. The same applies to Squadron 42, a single-player game set in Star Citizen's universe originally meant to come bundled with its companion title before splitting off. That has not stopped developer Cloud Imperium Games from stating, without a hint of irony, that it plans to make multiple sequels to Squadron 42 in the coming years. Seriously? This curious bit of news comes courtesy of an interview with Carl Jones, the chief operating officer at Cloud Imperium Games, that featured in the UK trade magazine MCV Develop. Jones discussed the state of Squadron 42's development and notes that directo... |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Thursday, January 13, 2022 3:30 PM Today was developer Techland's final episode of Dying 2 Know, a video series all about showing off the impressive-looking Dying Light 2 Stay Human. The first episode landed in May last year. Since then, Techland has been peeling back the layers, introducing fans to the game's story, world, and much more. This final episode, however, is special, as it finally lifted the veil on the mode that has many excited. Dying Light 2 includes a four-player co-op mode, and the final episode today has shown off some footage. The voice of Aiden Caldwell, Jonah Scott, is joined by streamer and host, Leah Alexandra. Together, they introduce the co-op mode of Dying Light 2, while offering some sweet details in the process. As mentioned by Alexandra, the co-op mode, which can host four people, doesn't benefit the host alone. Your co-op partners can "keep their items and their player progression." In the stream, Clemens Koch, IO Interactive's Community Manager, as well as other developers, shared some more details regarding the Elusive Target Arcade mode, VR, and technical improvements coming to Hitman 3. In a year that's jam-packed with releases, Hitman 3 seems to be bringing its fair share to the table. On top of this, IO Interactive also shared a few more details for future content coming in Spring 2022. Keeping the World of Assassination fresh The first thing addressed was the Elusive Target Arcade mode. It's a spin on the current Elusive Target mode that seems less forgiving and a bit harder. In this new mode, players will need to take out numerous targets in a row without failure. To make things more interesting, there will be "new objectives and complications thrown into the mix." Unlike the current Elusive Target ... |
