Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:45 PM Italian lawmakers who gathered yesterday for a discussion of data transparency in political decision making got more than they bargained for when someone started playing a CGI video of Final Fantasy VII's Tifa Lockhart having sex in the middle of the digital proceedings. Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:31 PM The big news out of Microsoft today is, obviously, its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for the nominal fee of, oh, a small country's GDP. The immediate impact here means major Activision-published behemoths like Call of Duty and Overwatch will become first-party games under Microsoft's ever-growing purview, with… |
Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:10 PM Zack and I were sprinting through a field of head-high flowers, and we were very afraid. Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 1:40 PM The official trailer for Netflix's The Cuphead Show! just dropped and, much like the visually stunning (and brutally difficult) game it's based on, it's bursting at the seams with all of the charm and whimsy of a '30s cartoon. |
Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 1:24 PM PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are still notoriously difficult to acquire. This is partially because of the chip shortage that affects the availability of the components inside the machines, but also because of scalpers who can buy consoles and sell them for a much higher price. One guy named Jack Bayliss is… |
Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:45 PM A new console generation usually means a new library of games. That's not exactly the case with Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, at least not yet. So far, there are few true next-gen exclusives. Instead, Xbox games are often released in both last-gen and next-gen versions. |
Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:10 PM Alongside news that Microsoft is preparing to acquire Activision Blizzard for $70 billion, the Xbox console maker has confirmed that games from the recently troubled Call of Duty and Warcraft publisher will make their way to Xbox Game Pass. |
Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 11:55 AM The NPD Group released its annual tally of gaming sales for 2021 today, pretty much at the very second Microsoft announced it would buy mega-publisher Activision Blizzard for approximately the GDP of Luxembourg. Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 10:50 AM Microsoft revealed a bombshell today: it's buying embattled Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard in the largest gaming industry acquisition ever. Kotaku Tuesday, January 18, 2022 8:30 AM In an extraordinary turn of events, Microsoft is getting near to a deal to buy Activision Blizzard, the Wall Street Journal reported today. This would not only be one of the most major shake-ups in the gaming industry in years but could also finally signal the end for its horrendous CEO, Bobby Kotick. |
PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:02 PM While we contemplate the possibilities of Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Crash Bandicoot on Game Pass, Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard isn't slowing down the subscription service. A pile of new games have just been announced for Game Pass in January, including one of the best indie games of last year. Oh, and Microsoft has just confirmed that Game Pass has reached 25 million subscribers. The indie game that I'm excited about is Death's Door, a fantastic action game from the developers of Titan Souls, which blends some Souls-influenced design tropes with a gorgeous aesthetic and Zelda-style adventuring. That'll be coming to the service this Thursday, January 20. Other surprises in today's announcement include Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. This first entry in the anime-style murder game visual novel is available on the service today. Also out today is (the previously-announced) Nobody Saves the World, a Diablo-like action-RPG from the Guacamelee devs. RELATED LINKS: Upcoming PC Games |
PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 1:53 PM Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is expected to depart the company once Microsoft finalises the deal to acquire Activision-Blizzard, according to reports. Microsoft's official announcement indicates that Kotick will stay on as CEO of Activision-Blizzard until the deal closes, which is expected to take place before July 2023. After that, the companies expect him to leave, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal. Microsoft's plan to acquire Activision-Blizzard for nearly $70 billion sent shockwaves through the games industry when it was announced January 18, and initially it was unclear what plans were for executive-level leadership once the buyout was finalised. Kotick said that he had told Microsoft that following the acquisition, he would "be available to ensure that we are going to have the very best integration," the WSJ reports. The WSJ's sources, however, have indicated that Kotick will leave one the deal is completed. Indeed, it appears that it was the Journal's bombshell report in November, which included interviews with current and former Activision-Blizzard employees and a review of a trove of internal company memos, that set the acquisition in motion. |
PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 1:00 PM The studio behind Wallace and Gromit (as well as the excellent Chicken Run and Flushed Away) is creating a bonkers open-world game, it seems. As spotted by TechRadar, esteemed animation studio Aardman has posted a job listing for a level and narrative designer working on games who will help build "a mad, open world and fill it with compelling stories". There's very little to go on in terms of what the game will be, exactly, in the job description. However, we do know it'll be a "brand-new IP" so it won't tie into any of the studio's existing worlds, though it sounds like we can expect it to be as fun and distinctive as Aardman's adventures have been so far, given the role is aimed at helping to "build" a "mad" open world and create "compelling" stories within it. There's a smattering of other clues giving us an idea of what the game will be, too. "We'll be scoping out the size and structure of our world, the player journey from end to end and the way we implement and explore our core, open-ended mechanics," the description reads. It also indicates that the game will be in the "3D action-adventure genre". |
PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:33 PM Looking for the Kuki Shinobu release date? Following the discovery of a reference to Kuki Shinobi in Genshin Impact's game files, players are eagerly waiting for more information on this possible new Genshin Impact character. Kuki Shinobu - previously known as Kuki Ninja - is mentioned in-game in a couple of voice lines from Sayu and Arataki Itto. She's the deputy of the Arataki gang, and was first introduced in Itto's official announcement tweet - in which she implores us to contact her if we discover "any inappropriate behaviour on the part of our boss, Arataki Itto." We don't have any information on Kuki Shinobu's moveset, weapon, or element yet - all we know at the moment is that she uses the 'girl' body type. This isn't the diminutive body type shared by Sayu, Diona, or Qiqi - it's the 'teen' body type, shared by Ayaka and Keqing. Beyond that, there isn't much information yet - but we'll update this guide as soon as we know more. Here's everything we know about Kuki Shinobu in Genshin Impact. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:12 PM Excited to learn which character is joining Apex Legends in Season 12? The power level for the new Legends rose in 2021, with every character earning higher pick rates than their 2020 counterparts. From Valkyrie who can fly around the map, to Seer's ability to track the heart beats of his enemies, the newest Legends continue to up the ante. If the leaks about Apex Legends Season 12 are true, it looks like the developers are going to continue raising the bar. There haven't been any hints from Respawn this time around, fortunately we have enough data mined information to make an educated guess on the newest Apex Legends character. The latest 'Stories from the Outlands' video gave us a look at Jackson, Bangalore's brother. However, we believe he won't be joining the battle royale game any time soon as Respawn has plenty of new Legends lined up before him. There's plenty of evidence to suggest that Mad Maggie is coming to Apex Legends - yes, the same Maggie that we saw die in Fuse's reveal trailer last year. It appears Fuse's best friend has some unfinished business to settle in the Apex Games. Here's all the information we have on Mad Maggie, the next Apex Legends character. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:00 PM So, you want to know about Minecraft banners and banner designs? These tall, thin blocks are highly customisable, and can be used in a variety of ways. You can combine one with a Minecraft shield to add a pattern, you can use it to decorate your buildings, and you can even wear one as a hat (sort of). In the Minecraft Java edition, banners can also be used to leave markers on a map to make navigation easier. Banners can hold up to six layers of patterns, 16 if you're using Minecraft console commands. They are crafted from wool, and the colour of the wool will influence the design of your banner. Knowing you want a Minecraft banner and actually getting one are two different things, however. It's a good thing we created this handy guide for you. Join us as we explore everything you need to know about banners in Minecraft, including how to put letters on them, and what the best banner designs are. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 11:42 AM Wondering where to harvest stone from The Temple, The Ruins, or Tumbledown Temple in Fortnite? The battle royale game's weekly update is here, complete with a set of new challenges - that's the Chapter 3 Season 1 Week 7 challenges, if you're keeping track - and a few new features. Player favourite POI Tilted Towers is back, so if you fancy a hot drop, you know where to go. Additionally, the Fortnite v19.10 update adds several giant lumbering beasts called Klombos. These creatures are partial to Klomberries, and spit out items from their blowholes after being fed. They are peaceful unless provoked; in the event you accidentally anger one of them, simply feed one a Klomberry to calm it down. You'll need to get familiar with one of these Klombos in one of this week's other challenges - here's how to throw a Klomberry while standing within 10 meters of a Klombo, in case you're interested. Though the rest of the challenges this week don't involve toothy quadrupeds, they're just as important to complete - and if you want to know where to harvest stone from The Temple, The Ruins, or Tumbledown Temple, we've plotted all their locations on the map below. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 11:02 AM Want to know more about Apex Legends Season 12? 2021 was a big year for EA's battle royale game as Apex Legends received its first non battle royale mode in the form of Arenas. The updates didn't stop there, as four new characters were introduced and a new island map named Storm Point was added to the game. The new content was well-received by players, with Apex Legends seeing its highest player count ever on Steam. Season 12 looks like it's going to include some exciting additions to the game, assuming the data leaks are correct. Last year kicked off with a bang as Fuse, the explosives expert from the planet Salvo, joined the Apex Games. Judging by the latest rumours, Mad Maggie, Fuse's best friend, could be added to the ever growing roster as the next Legend. Based on information the developers shared last year, we know Respawn is working on adding cross-progression and a next generation update. These features were supposed to arrive back in 2021 but were delayed until 2022, so there's a chance they could be part of Season 12. Here's everything we know about Apex Legends Season 12, including what character might join the cast, which weapons have been leaked, and any new information. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 11:00 AM The Expeditions series has gone through its own epic voyage over the years. From the early days of the Spanish conquest of South America, through to a rich (if slightly convoluted) Viking romp back in 2017, developer Logic Artists has returned with a third game. Instead of leading a viking raiding party, this time you're commanding an entire Roman legion during the height of the republic. You are the child of a recently murdered senator, whisked away to one of the Roman Republic's various theatres of war so you can escape the political infighting that's breaking out across the capital and earn a reputation for yourself at the same time. The implicit intimacy of an RPG may not sound like the obvious bedfellow to a game in which you lead thousands of legionaries, but Expeditions: Rome elegantly handles the setting and your place within it. You are the tip of the spear, an SAS-like group of elite warriors called Speculatores. Despite this specific anchor of a military campaign, Expeditions: Rome mixes in the usual blend of exploration, side quests, and light RPG party management. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 10:54 AM The Grid Legends system requirements may surprise you with how forgiving they are, as now decade old Intel and AMD CPUs are more than enough to get you on to the starting grid. That said, the game will undoubtedly still tap into the greater available horsepower found in gaming PC hardware, like the best graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia. Codemasters has revealed that Grid Legends uses the EGO Engine 4.0, the same engine it uses to power its annual F1 videogames. This means it's possible we could see an implementation of ray traced reflections and shadows, as previously seen in F1 2021. Of course, you'll need a compatible GeForce RTX or Radeon RX GPU to enjoy these major graphical improvements. Ray tracing tends to have a dramatic impact on performance, so we hope that Codemasters will also carry across support for Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR. These upscaling technologies are an easy way to boost fps, but your mileage may vary in pushing frame rates as high as your speedometer. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 9:06 AM Want to know how to throw a Klomberry while standing within ten metres of a Klombo in Fortnite? The latest Fortnite update introduces us to the gentle giants, stomping around and hovering up all the discarded items that eliminated players leave behind. Their favourite treats are Klomberries, and it's up to you to bring them this delicious treat. So far, the season challenges have had us complete relatively simple tasks such as knocking down Fortnite timber pines, destroying and collecting Fortnite telescope parts, and destroying Fortnite signal jammers. However, this week's challenges are a little more difficult as you need to interact with a computer terminal at a Mole Time drill site that IO agents guard, harvest stone from Fortnite temples, and of course, feed the elusive Klombo some Klomberries. This guide will help you find the Klombos, how to get to their blowholes, where you can harvest some Klomberries to feed them, and what happens when you eat the Klomberries yourself. Completing these challenges is worth doing as you will get some experience to put towards unlocking Fortnite skins and Fortnite V-bucks via the battle pass. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 12:02 PM Want to learn how to create and customise your Minecraft shields? Shields are a state of the art defensive tool to aid in pixelated combat, used instead of blocking with swords. Minecraft shields are not upgradable, so it's one size fits all, but they can be customised using a Minecraft banner. Minecraft shields will completely negate all front-facing attacks of up to four damage, with the shield taking damage equal to the strength of the attack if the incoming attack exceeds that value. Minecraft shields can be used to deflect some incoming attacks, including arrows that will ricochet and deal damage back at the enemy who fired it, and melee combat which will knock an enemy backwards. All non-damage effects through a ranged attack, such as being set on fire or poisoned by an arrow, are prevented when blocking with the shield. Knockback from melee attacks or projectiles is negated, except explosions, which are reduced to one block or less. Find out how to create, customise, and enchant your shield in Minecraft with these handy tips. RELATED LINKS: Minecraft console commands, Minecraft skins, Minecraft mods |
PCGamesN Tuesday, January 18, 2022 9:14 AM Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard in "an all-cash transaction valued at $68.7 billion". If approved, the deal would give 'Team Xbox' full ownership of iconic IPs such as Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, and many more, and grow its head count by almost 10,000. The story first broke at the Wall Street Journal and was followed by a corroboration at Bloomberg's The Terminal. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has since confirmed the acquisition himself on the Xbox Blog. "It is incredibly exciting to announce that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Activision Blizzard," Spencer writes. "We will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, both new titles and games from Activision Blizzard's incredible catalogue. We also announced today that Game Pass now has more than 25 million subscribers. The fantastic franchises across Activision Blizzard will also accelerate our plans for Cloud Gaming, allowing more people in more places around the world to participate in the Xbox community." Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:49 PM The PC version of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox now supports cooperative multiplayer, a tidy little post-launch bonus for Nihon Falcom's action-RPG. Nadia Oxford told us last year that for fans of the genre, "the Ys series is a must-play, and Ys IX is as good a place to start as any." Co-op makes it an even nicer place to start because friends are nice, aren't they? |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, January 18, 2022 11:00 AM I used to think that big, intricate character customisation systems were pretty much mandatory for decent CRPGs. As I saw it, the ability to conjure up a hideous goblin man with a chin curving back up into his face, if you wanted to, was a sign that you were playing something in the big leagues. Now, however, I am not so sure. Expeditions: Rome, a historical CRPG blending turn-based combat, strategic army management, and lots of dialogue, has a pretty rubbish character creation system. There's bugger all you can really do to customise your Roman. and after the mammoth character forge of Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous, for example, it all just feels very sparse and shoestringy. And that is a damned shame, because when it gets down to business, this is a seriously good - and lovingly detailed - romp through centurion times. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, January 18, 2022 9:38 AM In the wake of scandal and lawsuits alleging a culture of discrimination and harrassment at Activision Blizzard, Microsoft today announced they're buying the company. Wait, hang on. What. That's not what I expected when Xbox head Phil Spencer told staff he was "evaluating all aspects of [Xbox's] relationship" with Activision Blizzard. Microsoft plan to pay $68.7 billion (£50 billion) for the company, which will nab them games including Warcraft, Call Of Duty, and Overwatch. Jesus. |

PC Invasion - FeedDDD Tuesday, January 18, 2022 2:00 PM So much for the slow gaming news cycle, eh? Earlier this morning, Microsoft confirmed it will acquire the developer and publisher giant Activision Blizzard for a staggering $68.7 billion USD. It's one of the biggest deals in games industry history, creating shockwaves around the internet. Microsoft put out several statements answering some questions on the deal. Though, there are still plenty of questions remaining. However, one question that is no doubt at the top of players' minds is: are Activision Blizzard games heading to Game Pass? The simple answer is yes, they are. According to a statement by Xbox boss Phil Spencer, the company "will offer as many Activision Blizzard games as we can within Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass." The collection includes both new games to be released, as well as some from Activision Blizzard's catalogue. Spencer follows this by announcing that Game Pass has reached 25 million subscribers. It's easy to assume the n... |
PC Invasion - FeedDDD Tuesday, January 18, 2022 1:00 PM Nvidia announced its newest premium graphics card in the form of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti earlier this month at CES 2022. The company promised it would be a really beefy card in its own right, packed with hardware capable of delivering unrivaled gaming performance. But now, it seems that the release of the upcoming Nvidia flagship RTX 3090 Ti graphics card may have been delayed due to technical issues. Sources have informed TweakTown that there has been a delay to the RTX 3090 Ti's release. Before this, the card was planned to release sometime in January. Now it seems that Nvidia could have a February release planned for RTX 3090 Ti instead. We're still awaiting confirmation on this from Nvidia, so this information should be taken as a rumor until proven otherwise. An unfortunate, but temporary delay for Nvidia The delay doesn't seem to be a massive one. In fact, if the date has indeed been pushed back to February, then it's only a matter of several mor... |
