Kingdom Hearts 4 Star Wars tease spotted in trailer

It looks like a Kingdom Hearts IV Star Wars tease is seemingly hiding in the highly-anticipated JRPG game sequel's trailer. As spotted by fans, the beginning of the trailer shows a forest - and a few hints that this location is actually the forest moon of Endor from Return of the Jedi.

Kingdom Hearts IV was revealed today, as part of the series' 20th-anniversary celebration, along with an announcement trailer showing main character Sora in a more realistic city called Quadratum. However, the beginning of the trailer shows an unrelated forest area for some reason, and fans believe this is a big tease for Kingdom Hearts to become a Star Wars game.

The Kingdom Hearts series are the ultimate Disney games, with Sora and friends crossing over to worlds based on the likes of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Pirates of the Caribbean. Kingdom Hearts III actually featured a Toy Story world, despite that being a Pixar movie rather than Disney - so it is possible Kingdom Hearts IV could visit other Disney-owned properties like Star Wars or even Marvel.

Total War NFTs? Creative Assembly aware of

Its possible fans of SEGA's RTS game series don't want to hear about Total War NFTs, but they could be on the cards. With Total War: Warhammer III now out, developer Creative Assembly says it is aware of "differences of opinion and concerns" - but it has to follow any SEGA NFT plans.

NFTs remain a sore point in gaming. While publishers like Ubisoft and Konami support them despite opposition, Team17 cancelled its NFT plans shortly after announcing them, and others just call them a scam. SEGA hasn't announced any specific plans but recently suggested that its new games could use them and registered "SEGA NFT" earlier this year.

Creative Assembly is owned by SEGA, and in a new interview with 3DJuegos (via Google Translate), Total War: Warhammer 3 campaign designer Mark Sinclair acknowledges that the publisher has said a few things about NFTs and states that ultimately, "what [SEGA] says gets done". However, Creative Assembly is looking into "the issue of the environmental impact they have" and "understands everyone's differences of opinion and concerns" about NFTs.

Doom x F.E.A.R. FPS Selaco Steam demo coming this summer

FPS game developer Altered Orbit Studios confirms that the Selaco Steam demo is coming in this summer. It revealed this alongside a new gameplay trailer to show off its mix of F.E.A.R. combat within a nearly unrecognisable Doom engine.

There are many great upcoming games on PC in the FPS genre, and Selaco is easily one of the most promising indie games for 2022. The combat is directly influenced by Monolith's 2005 classic F.E.A.R. - so much so that it's even got its classic nailgun - all built in the venerable Doom engine.

An early Patreon Selaco demo is available now, but the Altered Orbit team confirms it is prepping the release of a full public Steam demo in June - which will presumably be more polished and indicative of the final game than the backer demo. Hopefully, this means the main Selaco release date isn't too far behind, although the Steam page lists it as coming 2255 - the same year we expect to see Half-Life 3.

taito milestones review

Is a fancy Egret II mini-arcade a little rich for your blood? Thankfully, there are easier ways to play some Taito classics. Is Taito Milestones, out this week on Nintendo Switch, for you? We're here to help you decide.

What games are included?

Taito Milestones bundles ten games from the company's early arcade days: Qix, Space Seeker, Alpine Ski, Front Line, Wild Western, Chack'n Pop, Elevator Action, The FairyLand Story, Halley's Comet, and The Ninja Warriors.

The Taito Milestones games are "powered by Arcade Archives," which makes sense! The tireless team at Hamster has already released eight of these games on the eShop, so why reinvent the wheel? The two collection exclusives are Space Seeker and Chack'n Pop.

Hamster's emulation approach is... fine? It ain't M2-level, but the company's work has sustained them since console standards for these things were much lower. If you're looking for precision or particularly sharp visuals, it may not be what you want. Most players, though, will be more than fine.

taito milestones elevator action

How do they play in 2022?

The Taito of this era, much like its peers, focused heavily on score-chasing arcade action. All through this collection, the motivation to keep playing is mastery. Nothing here gets to the Gauntlet era of coin-munching, nor the Street Fighter 2 and Puyo Puyo phase of high-octane versus play.

The Arcade Archives system allows for a whole host of display customization, including a vertical mode configuration. (I'm sure Flip Grip owners are happy about that.) Display sizes and shapes were all over the place at the time, so the collection's imprecise scaling approach does allow for flexibility. Weird games like The Ninja Warriors with its three-monitor-wide configuration? They blend in here.

Of the ten games in the collection, Qix feels the most timeless. The pack is full of nostalgic gameplay time capsules! And there's value there. But while some new takes on the Qix formula have popped up over the years, none have made the controls or format of this original obsolete or outdated.

For most of the pack, the appeal lies in seeing some very early gameplay ideas. They're in rougher packages, but you can see some of the signature styles that would later give Taito success. For example, The FairyLand Story builds the foundation for Bubble Bobble, and you can see what the developers got wrong — and right — in this previous attempt.

taito milestones menu screen

What's the selling point for the collection?

That's the question, isn't it? After all, with no extras and almost all of the games long available individually with the same emulation and features, it's not the most robust value proposition. For now? The two exclusives give it some special elements. But since Qix just saw a standalone release, the remaining two will likely come soon. The "extra content" here is a menu screen, which you can see above. That's it!

So Taito Milestones? It's a bulk discount. If you want all ten of the games, you can get them at half off. (You know, as long as you didn't want any of them before now and already purchase some.) It ain't flashy, but we suppose it's a valid reason to exist. Our Taito nostalgia lies more with the company's '90s output than these earlier efforts. For the intended audience, though, the value proposition might be a easier sell.

the ninja warriors

Taito Milestones releases April 15, 2022 on the Nintendo Switch for $39.99. It'll be available both on the eShop and as a physical cartridge.

Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary SuperGroupies

A total of 45 items, including watches, jackets, and other merchandise, will release sometime in Summer 2022. The items will only be available for a limited time, and only for those who pre-order. [Thanks, rikunami!]

The announcement appeared during the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary event held in Tokyo, Japan. Details are scarce, however, and are limited to a few poster board designs and an image of one of the watch faces. The watch face in question featured intricate details referencing the franchise, such as an hour hand resembling Sora's keyblade.

The other poster boards included a wide range of characters from the Kingdom Hearts series on which the merchandise will likely be based. In addition to Sora, Riku, and Kairi, the posters also included designs for Roxas, Axel, Xion, Ventus, Aqua, and Terra. Further details about the 45 new items will appear through the SuperGroupies Twitter account and website.

This isn't the first time SuperGroupies has collaborated with Square Enix to release Kingdom Hearts merchandise. Back in early 2021, the company released a series of keyblade necklaces, as well as herbariums for interior decoration. Before that, the company also released shoes and other fashion items based on Sora, Riku, Kairi, Roxas, and Axel for the release of Kingdom Hearts 3.

The Kingdom Hearts games are available to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. They're also on Nintendo Switch through cloud streaming. The Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary SuperGroupies collection will appear sometime in Summer 2022.

Kingdom Hearts 4

Square Enix announced that it is developing Kingdom Hearts 4, the next game in the mainline Kingdom Hearts series. The company made the announcement as part of the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary event held in Tokyo, Japan. Square Enix also released an announcement trailer for the game. No release dates or platforms were included in the announcement.

Sora will return as the main protagonist in Kingdom Hearts 4. The game will take place in Quadratum, the "fictional" world based on the real-life city of Shibuya, Tokyo. The announcement trailer gives fans a brief glimpse of what gameplay will look like. After waking up from a deep sleep, Sora fights against a large black monster in the center of a city. Strelitzia also makes an appearance at the beginning of the trailer.

https://twitter.com/KINGDOMHEARTS/status/1513108728362512385

Toward the end of the video, both Donald Duck and Goofy appear traveling in a dark location, looking for an unknown person. Then, a blue flame appears behind them, and the voice of what sounds to be Hades is heard. Hades has appeared in all past mainline Kingdom Hearts games as an antagonist.

You can check out the official Kingdom Hearts 4 announcement trailer below (starts at around 4:08):

In celebration of the game's announcement, Square Enix also shared the full version of the anniversary sketch by series director Tetsuya Nomura, featuring Sora from all three past installments. As the name suggests, the upcoming game will be the fourth entry in the mainline Kingdom Hearts series. The last mainline game in the series was Kingdom Hearts 3, which released in 2019.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development.
