Escape from Tarkov Arena is a standalone competitive FPS game

Battlestate Games has just announced Escape from Tarkov Arena, which it turns out is not a location in the Escape from Tarkov we've grown to know and love over the past couple of years. It's a standalone game featuring more traditional multiplayer PvP sessions, with all the "hardcore game mechanics" featured in Escape from Tarkov.

Rather than the raid-based gameplay found in Escape from Tarkov, Arena is based around more action-packed PvP matches, the kind you'll be familiar with from countless multiplayer FPS games over the past several decades. The setting is still the fictional city of Tarkov, where a mysterious group called 'The Arena Masters' organises modern gladiatorial battles as a spectator sport.

Battlestate says Escape from Tarkov Arena will feature both PvP and PvE modes, with weapon and gear unlocks, and the ability to play as your character from the main Escape from Tarkov game. The arenas look appropriately dystopian: there's a heavily modified partial airliner hull with tyre barricades and plywood set up to create bits of cover and concealment, as well as a larger airport concourse area with urban combat training structures set up along the floors and hallways.

     Diablo Immortal leveling guide

What's the secret to Diablo Immortal leveling? Obviously, the name of the game is to soak up as much experience as quickly as you can in order to unlock more skills to do more damage and gain even more XP. But since Diablo Immortal is structured as a mobile game, there are some additional sources of experience you'll want to look out for regularly, especially as you make your first steps in the RPG game.

At its core, Diablo Immortal is similar to its predecessors in the way you develop your characters: killing monsters gives you experience, gold, and loot, and you'll use this to advance in levels and gain additional power.

Leveling up itself is a cinch: you'll gain a boost in power through some background stat gains automatically. The only thing you'll have to manage when you gain a level is your Diablo Immortal skills loadout. As you progress through the initial experience levels, you'll unlock new skills for your Diablo Immortal class, and these skills will in turn gain upgrades every few levels after that.

The best Diablo Immortal class for every type of player

Want to know which Diablo Immortal class you should pick? It may shock you to learn that there's a PC version of the mobile RPG game Blizzard initially said wasn't coming to PC. That's great for those of you who prefer to play by frantically clicking your mouse rather than tapping your thumbs, but the main takeaway here is that there's a new Diablo game.

Set between the events of Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, your chosen adventurer must deal with the consequences of Archangel Tyrael's sacrifice, and prevent the Lord of Terror's minions from rebuilding the shattered Worldstone. If you've been playing Diablo for a while, you may already have picked your favourite Diablo Immortal class and be familiar with how it'll play. However, if this is your first time venturing into Blizzard's hellish realm, you may be seeking a little to help you defeat the demonic beasts who are relishing the chance to rend your flesh.

Do you go with the savage Barbarian who can use deadly melee attacks to chop, lop, and crop any foes in their way? Perhaps the Demon Hunter's unique combination of stealth and ranged techniques is more your cup of the proverbial. Still no? If you'd rather take a back seat and keep your hands clean, then you'll probably love the idea of summoning minions with the Necromancer and getting them to do your bidding. There are six wildly different classes in Diablo Immortal, so let's go over each one and explain how they play.

Madden NFL 23 PC version won't have next-gen features

Just as it did with last year's edition of the American football game, EA Sports has opted to make the Madden NFL 23 PC edition a port of the last-gen console version, putting it in line with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 experiences. That means this year's Madden game will lack some of the flashy new features EA's been highlighting in Madden this year.

One of those is the new 'FieldSense' animation and physics system, which EA Sports says allows players to 'hit anything' and provides enhanced control over player movement and actions. FieldSense drives some of Madden NFL 23's other new features, such as skill-based passing and 360 cuts, but those will all be missing on the PC edition of the game.

Last year, EA Sports said it was porting the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 version of Madden 22 to PC rather than the current-gen version because "the team is focused on making the best, quality experience on new consoles before looking to upgrade other platforms." It appears that this remains the case for the 2023 edition.

     Rust update completely changes gunplay

Facepunch's Rust Combat Update is live now, and it's the biggest change to Rust's combat since the multiplayer survival game first released in 2013. One of the most significant changes in the combat update makes recoil more bearable and less like you're fighting the gun instead of your enemies.

"Ultimately, being good at first person shooters and having the drop on someone wasn't good enough," Facepunch says in the patch notes. "This was fun for people who could spend thousands of hours training their aim, or morally bankrupt individuals who would choose to use scripts to gain an advantage. This was not fun for 99% of the population, and it's time for a change."

With the new update, automatic weapons gradually become more inaccurate the longer you hold the trigger down, so you're not struggling with intense recoil the moment you start firing anymore. Facepunch adjusted the bullet weighting as well. Approximately 20% of the bullets fired will land in the center of the spread, which means automatic weapons are now less useful at a distance – something Facepunch said should help encourage players to think about the best weapon for each situation.

Here's where Xur is in Destiny 2 today

Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in.

As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week.

Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content.

Grab God of War on GeForce Now before it leaves the platform for good

Sony Santa Monica's God of War is leaving GeForce Now on July 1, Nvidia has announced in a new GeForce blog post. It's not all bad news, though. Anyone who accesses the game once before July 1, even just to claim and launch it, will have it in their GeForce Now library permanently, even after the game leaves the service.

As with all games on GeForce now, you'll need to actually own the action-adventure game on PC (via Steam) first before you can add it to your library. So far, God of War is the only one of PlayStation's current PC ports playable on the service. Days Gone and Horizon: Zero Dawn remain in popular demand among GeForce Now users, though there's no sign of either landing on the cloud platform in the near future.

That may change as PlayStation ramps up its PC plans, though. In May, Sony posted a job description looking for a candidate to help shape their PlayStation PC strategy, and an investor report mentioned Sony believes its PC game sales will reach $300 million in 2022 alone.

Dragon Age 2 characters explain its recent acclaim, says dev

Just as news of Dragon Age 4's full title arrives, a former series director's deep dive video talks about how the once-maligned Dragon Age 2 "is very fashionable to like now because it's the first BioWare game to intentionally put the characters first." Mark Darrah, former BioWare project director on the RPG game, has released a video in his 'Memories and Lessons' development series talking in depth about the fantasy game's rushed development and the achievements he's most proud of the team for.

"Dragon Age II is a game that is about constraints," says Darrah in the hour-long video posted to his 'Old game dev advice' YouTube channel. Following the closure of BioWare's acquisition by EA in 2008 just before Dragon Age: Origins shipped, he explains, the publisher was eager to release BioWare's MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic as a competitor to World of Warcraft. According to Darrah, that game's pushback out of the 2011 fiscal year left EA "pretty mad at BioWare" and insisting that a game was shipped to "plug the hole" for that financial year.

This led to the decision to rework Dragon Age II's design, which was originally planned to be similar in scope to what Dragon Age: Inquisition would later become, into a game that could fill those needs. While some work from what was originally a second expansion pack for Origins was rolled into the project, says Darrah, he is uncomfortable with language suggesting the game was "built out of an expansion pack," because almost no assets or levels had been created beforehand and he feels it minimises the team's accomplishment of building the game in less than 15 months.

The Division 2's latest event is delayed due to a fancy backpack

The latest event in Tom Clancy's The Division 2 has been delayed again. The Fairview Crew apparel event, which originally was scheduled to begin May 24, had been pushed back to June 2 - but another issue has cropped up, leading to another delay. Now Ubisoft says the MMORPG's Fairview Crew event will begin next week, June 7, thanks to a problem with the new backpack vanity item not working correctly.

"We had to delay the apparel event as a major issue related to the new vanity item, the backpack, was found at the last minute," the Division 2 team says in a statement posted to Twitter. "The apparel event will start on Tuesday [June 7], and the backpack rewards will be granted once a new patch is deployed at a later date, during the apparel event."

The Division 2's apparel events add new cosmetic outfit looks, usually a total of around 27 items, that players can earn in limited time event caches. To open the caches, players race to complete event objectives and projects and earn as many cache keys as possible during the event.

Valheim update aims to fix cloud saves and add Maypoles

The next Valheim update should prevent players from losing progress thanks to a pesky bug with Steam Cloud saving. Patch 0.208.5, which is now available on the Viking game's public test branch, adds a workaround and failsafe system to keep your save files safe, even when you're playing multiple Valheim accounts on the same PC. The patch also introduces some festive new Midsummer content, so start weaving some flower crowns now.

Developer Iron Gate explains that players - especially players who were using multiple accounts on a single PC - have run into issues with losing progress thanks to a bug with Steam Cloud saves. To address this, the devs say they're creating some new folders for Cloud and local save files.

Once this new patch arrives on the main branch, cloud saves will be stored in Steam's userdata folder. Save files for dedicated servers and multi-account PCs have a new save file location: folder labelled '_local' that's next to the old save file folder. Old saves will remain in that old save folder, but no new saves will be stored there. Iron Gate says that when you start an old local save with cloud saving enabled from now on, the old local file will be moved to the cloud, and a local backup will be created.

Xalavier Nelson Jr has a bit of a love hate relationship with screens right now. As development on his studio's gutsy market game Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator was wrapping up at the end of last year, he tells me he remembers "just being really angry at the concept of the borders of the screen". He was, by his own admission, in "a vague fugue state" at the time, having spent months immersed in Space Warlord's black and green trading interfaces. But the feeling of having his game "chained to these walls" at the edge of his monitor proved to be a surprisingly powerful one - so much so that it spurred Nelson Jr and his team at Strange Scaffold to create an entirely new kind of game in the months leading up to Warlord's release: Witch Strandings.

That's right. Taking cues from Hideo Kojima's hiking postal sim Death Stranding, Witch Strandings is a game that not only asks what Sam Bridges' cross-country cargo routes might look like if they were made with a fraction of Kojima's development budget, but also how games can create experiences that are "larger than my screen," says Nelson Jr. And the answer, it turns out, lies in your PC's humble mouse.

summer game fest 2022 silent hill

There's no E3, but with Summer Game Fest 2022 and a host of surrounding showcases, we're still getting the announcements! Here's what the Siliconera staff is hoping to see in next week's festivities.

More than anything else, I would love to see any of those rumored Silent Hill projects get announced, or appear in some capacity. I can literally feel the monkey paw curl with that request, but I'd genuinely just be curious to see what kind of concept a new Silent Hill game might explore! — Kazuma

summer game fest sakura wars front mission

Release. Sakura. Wars. 1. Worldwide.
It feels like the 2019 Sakura Wars reboot is setting up a return of Sakura Shinguji and her crew. But so many people don't know who she is! The original game got a PS2 remake! The first two games were bundled together for a PSP release! Give a traditional, tactical, worldwide release of the very first Sakura Wars game, Sega! Please! — Jenni

Jenni beat me to the customary round of Sakura Wars begging, so I'm going to hope for more word from Square Enix about its plans for the previously-announced Front Mission remake. Besides that, not-E3 tends to be a place for news about the biggest globally-developed titles, so some news about HoYoVerse's progress on Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero would be welcome, too. — Josh

dragon quest xii 12 fire emblem

I'd be surprised if Square Enix didn't have at least some sort of reveal for Dragon Quest XII. It's been in development since the release of DQXI in 2017, for better or worse. Of course, it was also officially announced only last year. But I still want to see something! Gameplay? Characters? Story? A crumb of information, please, Square Enix! — Andrew

There are lots of franchises I'd love to glimpse in this month's announcements. Valkyria Chronicles? Devil Survivor? Hey, what about Rocket Slime? But in more likely things, I'd really like to see the new Fire Emblem. Warriors games are fine, but what brings me to Fire Emblem is the tactics. Whether it's a rumored remake or a totally new adventure, I just want to know something's on the way soon. — Graham

The MegaHobby Plus 2022 First Summer event also meant new looks at upcoming Naruto Shippuden characters. MegaHouse is working on a Naruto Gals Temari version 2 figure and Tenten figure. While there aren't painted or unpainted prototypes for either yet, the company did show off the 3D designs for both of them.

First, here's Temari wielding her Giant Folding Fan in her Naruto Gals figure design. She's in the midst of using one of her techniques, so there's wind all around her.

Kakashi Hatake Susanoo version showed up. Pre-orders are already open for that one in Japan. It is expected to ship in December 2022.

In addition to the Naruto figures, MegaHouse showed a new Persona 5 Royal Fox figure as part of the event.

Here's How Sonic Frontiers Combat Gameplay Looks

People can now get a first look at Sonic Frontiers combat gameplay. The latest video features about six minutes of Sonic the Hedgehog facing different enemies in the open-world game. All of them look futuristic and robotic, with none of them resembling past foes from the series. [Thanks, IGN!]

Things kick off with Sonic facing an enemy that is a cluster of robotic, illuminated balls. It reshapes itself as Sonic kicks and punches it. As they fight, he eventually wears it down until only a core, which explodes, is left. At the 1:45 mark, Sonic encounters another foe that has a circular, armored shell it uses it protect the legs and body underneath. However, it can also send it out to attack. He needs to race around it in order to cause the armor to fly into the air so he can deal damage to it. Some smaller foes show up at the 3:30 point. At the 4:30 mark, we see gigantic foes Sonic will need to take down.

Here's the full Sonic Frontiers combat gameplay video. The actual first fight begins at the 35 second mark.

This is the second "IGN First" Sonic Frontiers segment. The first one focused on gameplay as well. However, it was more about the exploration elements. It began with Sonic climbing up a tower using things like bounce pads and grind rails. After that, it showed off a bit of the surrounding area. Toward the end of that showcase, Sonic solved a few simple puzzles.

Sonic Frontiers will appear on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. There's no exact release date yet, but it is expected to appear around the 2022 holiday season.

First, here's how Yusuke will look with his Fox mask for this Persona 5 Royal figure. He is expected to be almost seven and a half inches tall, largely due to the positioning of the katana.

And here is how Yusuke will look without the mask. Both this face and the one with the mask will be separate parts.

The official site also offers peeks at the figure from different angles and from behind. However, due to the nature of them, they can only be viewed at the product page.

It hasn't been that long since MegaHouse announced this figure. It showed up during MegaHobby Plus 2022 Winter in January 2022. At the time, it was only confirmed Yusuke would be wielding a katana in his design. However, it did tease that a Haru "Noir" Okumura Lucrea figure with Mona would also show up.

Fennekin appeared as one of the three Pokemon X and Y starters. The fox starts out as a pure fire-type. It remains that way in its second stage, when it evolves to Braixen. It's only when it evolves into Delphox that it becomes a dual-type Pokemon. Given its fire and psychic abilities, this character could end up being a ranged attacker in Pokemon Unite.

As for other recent additions, Espeon became Pokemon Unite's next Eeveelution in May 2022. Before that, Azumarill joined the roster in April 2022.

However, you can technically use a lot more characters in-game now. That's because the Catch 'em Battle mode. When you enter this 4v4 mode, you'll be able to catch wild Pokemon in the field and use them alongside your chosen character. This would include more ordinary characters, like Ludicolo, and boss characters such as Zapdos.

Pokemon Unite is available for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, and Delphox will join the game on June 8, 2022.

Sega will release another microconsole with games built into it. A Sega Mega Drive Mini 2, aka the Sega Genesis Mini 2, will debut in Japan on October 27, 2022. A worldwide release isn't confirmed yet. However, when the system does appear, it will include a mix of over 50 games from the Mega Drive, Sega CD, and other sources. There will also be a cosmetic Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 that people can attach to it to make it look like a Sega CD is present. The plug-and-play system will be 9,980円 (~$76). The Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 will be sold separately for 4,500円 (~$34). [Thanks, Gematsu!]

The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 is 120.8mm x 32.3 mm x 116.5 mm, while the original one is 154 mm × 39 mm × 116 mm. You get a controller, USB cable, and HDMI cable with it. Its games will appear in 480p or 720p. M2 is once again working on the titles.

Here is the announcement trailer for it.

As with the original plug-and-play microconsole, Sega is announcing games in batches. The first 11 were revealed. Six are Genesis / Mega Drive games. The other five are Sega CD / Mega CD games. Here's the list. The Mega CD games have a notation behind them. There's also one non-Mega Drive game below, which is Fantasy Zone. It appeared on the Master System, Saturn, and Game Gear, but not the Mega Drive.

  • Bonanza Bros.
  • Fantasy Zone (not originally on the Mega Drive)
  • Magical Taruruto-kun
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Mega CD)
  • Popful Mail (Mega CD)
  • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Silpheed (Mega CD)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog CD (Mega CD)
  • Thunder Force IV
  • Virtua Racing

Here's a trailer going over the first games.

As for the tower accessory, it comes with five parts. You get a Mega CD 2 Mini. There is a Sonic CD CD to display inside of it. There is also a Virtua Racing cart to place in the microconsole itself. There are also spacers to mount it on the microconsole and for mounting the Super 32X Mini accessory.
Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini 2 Will Include Sega CD Games

The Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini 2 and its Mega Drive Tower Mini 2 will appear in Japan on October 27, 2022.

Koei Tecmo Nobunaga's Ambition Sphere of Influence images used in Bekko copyright lawsuit

Koei Tecmo announced that it amicably settled a copyright dispute with Bekko Games outside of court. The company previously filed a lawsuit against Bekko's parent company, Hangzhou Jedi Technology Co., Ltd., for infringing its copyrights in January 2020.

Koei Tecmo's new press release includes visual proof of copyright infringements that Bekko Games made in its own advertisements. The latter used screenshots from Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI and Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence in advertisements for Three Kingdoms: Overlord and Sengoku Fubu. Both titles are historical strategy games taking place in the Chinese Three Kingdoms and Japanese Warring States periods, respectively.

Bekko Games acknowledged its mistake during the settlement process and apologized directly to Koei Tecmo. The Chinese mobile game publisher also promised to delete any images related to the infringement. Additionally, Bekko paid Koei Tecmo five million yen (~$38,300) as part of the settlement.

Koei Tecmo is no stranger to court proceedings. In 2014, Capcom sued the company for infringing a couple of patents that the former had registered. The court proceedings ended in December 2020 in Capcom's favor after the Supreme Court of Japan rejected Koei Tecmo's final appeal. The court ordered Koei Tecmo to pay over 143 million yen (~$1.1 million) in compensation to Capcom.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI came out for PC and PlayStation in 1998. Nobunaga's Ambition: Sphere of Influence was released first on PC and PlayStation 3 in 2013. Both titles are available on Steam. Although Koei had an English localization of Romance of the Three Kingdoms VI on the PlayStation, its Steam release only features Japanese subtitles.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake delayedFans of Prince of Persia have had a rough time over the last decade, and it's about to get worse. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been indefinitely delayed. This was suspected after retailers began delisting pre-orders for the title, as well as allegedly warning customers that their orders will not arrive. In a statement to IGN, Ubisoft confirmed that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is "no longer targeting a FY23 release." In other terms, we won't be seeing the game until after September 2023 at the very least. It's not looking good for the remake, but the extra time may give Ubisoft the chance to correct its development.   It's not looking good for Prince of Persia For those keeping score, this is not the first delay to hit Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. It was first announced in September 2020, with an expected release date of January 2021. However, development issues caused the release date to be moved t...

Sonic Frontiers combat shadow threatThis past Wednesday, IGN posted the first extended look at Sonic Frontiers' gameplay. Unsurprisingly, this video has left fans quite polarized. Although the basic act of moving around the open world looked fun, the footage showed a distracting number of rough edges. Sonic's animations looked stiff and awkward, objects and environmental assets popped in regularly, and the floating grind rails placed above the realistic environment appeared haphazard and out of place. It didn't help that the footage removed the game's HUD elements and consisted entirely of Sonic aimlessly roaming around, leaving fans with little idea as to what the core gameplay loop entails. IGN said that it had more Sonic Frontiers information to reveal, however, and it did just that with today's combat showcase. On a surface level, Sonic Frontiers' combat certainly looks flashy, as it involves Sonic zipping towards enemies while dishing out rapid punches and kicks. The combat an...

Leap Early Access Release 1Following an array of betas and playtests, the gravity-defying multiplayer shooter Leap has now entered Steam Early Access. Coming from developer Blue Isle Studios, Leap is an attempt to blend the stylings of Battlefield and the acrobatic classic, Tribes. Naturally, that means large maps and different modes of transport to scoot your butt quickly into action. Leap offers four "exosuit" classes in Early Access. You have the Pathfinder, which is your basic starter class. It's well balanced for folks who are looking to get introduced to the game. Once you've gotten more experience, you can try the Titan, which is your tank class with heavy armor and weapons to match. The Wraith is on the opposite end of the Titan, favoring stealth and agility. Finally, there's the Tech Ops, your healer and supporter class.   Mobility is one of the main two highlights of Leap. The other, obviously, is the gunplay. However, movement and acrobatics are what Blue Isle has pu...
