The best FPS games on PC 2024

What are the best FPS games on PC? From the classic physics chaos of Half-Life 2 to Halo Infinite's beautifully rendered worlds, these are the finest FPS games. For more than two decades, FPS games have been the driving force of the PC games industry. They've let us travel from the depths of Hell in Doom to the outer reaches of space in Titanfall 2. Others have taken us on a detour through the likes of Half-Life 2's zombie-infested Ravenholm, while some have embraced futuristic cities.

Some of these games are old, others are new, and all are great. Warhammer 40K: Boltgun and its '90s-boomer-shooter-inspired graphics; Rainbow Six Siege's tight tactical multiplayer; Overwatch 2 and its vast array of amazing heroes. No matter what sort of virtual gunplay you're after, whether you want multiplayer games, war games, or something altogether different, the following titles will satisfy your itchy trigger finger. So crack those knuckles, and make every shot count. These aren't only the best FPS games, some of these entries are included in our best PC games too.

Microsoft finally lifts ban on Windows 11 upgrades for some Intel CPUs

The shift to Windows 11 naturally left some older processors behind, which is no surprise given the operating system's requirements, but owners of some Intel CPUs have been oddly left unsupported by Microsoft for the past two years. Thankfully, the issues preventing owners of 11th Gen Core chips from leaving Windows 10 behind have been seemingly quashed but have strangely taken far longer than expected.

A cult classic shooter is back after years, and deserves more players

Originally released in 2017 as a free-to-play game, the 5v5 hero shooter and MOBA hybrid Gigantic has become a cult classic of sorts, changing up the hero shooter format by combining it with MOBA elements to create a legitimately unique experience, even when compared to later competitors like Overwatch and Valorant. Splitting matches into two phases – an objective based, familiarly King of the Hill-esque phase followed by a more MOBA-inspired space-control Rampage phase – was novel, and nothing has been similar since. When Gigantic was shuttered by Gearbox in 2018, it was a loss for the genre and fans of the game made their feelings clear online that it was sorely missed – that was, until its eventual relaunch.

Nexus 5X review – a streamlined Stellaris experience

For as much as I love my big, ambitious strategy games, I run into the same problem every time I think about starting up a fresh save: the time investment. Having a limited number of hours to devote to recreational play, I know I'll have to set an entire Saturday aside if I really want to dig into Total War: Warhammer 3 or Crusader Kings 3 beyond the opening few turns or decades. Nexus 5X arrives as the solution to this problem, offering a pared-down, faster-paced version of the 4X experience that nonetheless preserves a lot of the flavor and variety you can get from its full-fat ancestor, Stellaris.

You can get all the games from one of the best FPS series ever for $6

What's your favorite videogame weapon? It's okay, we've all got one. If you've been playing shooters since the '90s, the Super Shotgun from Doom 2 will surely make your list. Likewise, Gordon Freeman's iconic red crowbar, that trusty stretch of steel that stayed with you through all of Half-Life, deserves at least an honorable mention. The GEP Gun from Deus Ex. The Super Nailgun from Quake. Jump forward to the mid '00s, and Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun becomes a strong contender. The AWP from Counter-Strike, too. But there's one videogame gun that reigns above them all. The metallic star of one of the best FPS games ever, it's a distillation of everything there is to love about shooters. Do you know what I'm talking about? One of the most vicious and varied FPS series of all time, now you can own every single entry for less than $6.

Acer just knocked $500 off its brand new 57-inch gaming monitor

Acer has just announced that its humongous upcoming Acer Predator Z57 miniLED gaming monitor will not retail for $2,499 as originally announced, but will instead sell for $1,999 - a massive $500 price drop. While that's still expensive, it's an incredible price for such a large screen.

Acer's new contender for a spot on our best gaming monitor guide was announced at CES 2024 at the start of the year, alongside a host of other gaming monitors. I had the chance to write an Acer Predator Z57 hands on preview with the display and was impressed at the sheer scale of it, although Acer hadn't set up the demo to really highlight the high contrast of which it should be capable.

CS2 ranks and rating system explained

How does the CS2 ranks and rating system work? Competitive Counter-Strike is drastically changing in CS2 to create a more streamlined experience depending on how you prefer to play the game. There are now two forms of ranked play in CS2: Competitive and Premier.

Unlike CSGO, your rank is split depending on the mode you're playing in Counter-Strike 2. Don't worry if you're a Global Elite-level player; as long as you continue to play well on the CS2 maps you should end up exactly where you deserve to be in the FPS game. Valve has removed the option to pick short or long games, instead, they've settled on MM24 to get directly to the action. Here's what you need to know about the rank and ratings system in CS2.

One of the most underrated shooters on Steam just got a big new update

League of Legends Mythic shop April – what's on sale?

What's on sale in the League of Legends Mythic shop? New skins for LoL are released all the time, with a new event arriving on the Rift every few weeks, but what happens if you missed the boat with that awesome KD/A Evelynn skin, or if you've seen a Hextech skin in a game of Summoner's and want to bag it for yourself?

The Mythic shop is a special storefront in the free PC game that stocks rare skins, wards, chromas, and essence.      Hollow Knight Silksong could be coming soon as new rating appears

Announced five entire years ago, with very little to be said of it since, Hollow Knight Silksong sometimes feels like a collective hallucination; a game that we all convinced ourselves will exist, but seems like it'll never manifest itself into reality. However, that could be soon to change with recent developments in the game's pre-release schedule, namely the fact it's now been given an age rating of 'PG' by the Australian government's Classification Board. Classifications like this usually occur when a game is readying up to reach the market, so it spells good news for Silksong's release.

Fallout Season 2 presents a major dilemma for New Vegas

The Fallout TV show once again proves that with the right creative team, videogames can be adapted to almost anything. It's not about breaking some huge, mythical, videogame movie curse. More simply, shows like The Last of Us, and, in fact, the Sonic films, prove that all you need is a good understanding of the source material and the ability to process that into a watchable story. Amazon's Fallout show does this. It has strong characters and uses them to flesh out the retro-futurist post-apocalypse in surprising ways. That said, the final shot of the show's first season raises one big question, and I'm apprehensively waiting to see how it's handled.

Following a mild-to-moderate outcry, Ubisoft have clarified that queasy worm gangster Jabba The Hutt isn't, in fact, a Star Wars Outlaws special edition or season pass exclusive. The apparently much-beloved star slug will appear in every edition of the game, but if you scrape together the credits for the Gold or Ultimate Editions, you'll get access to a Jabba's Gambit mission as part of the game's season pass.

It's a timely clarification, because I've just checked on Xitter and yes, #Jabbagate has been trending... in reference to unflattering photos of Donald Trump in 2016. And also, Steven Gerrard in 2020. And... Wrestlemania in 2017? Jabba is quite the meme these days, it seems.

I've been watching this year's ostensible "major" news developments - the launch of a Fallout TV show, the impending release of Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree, to pick a couple - with a sense of zealous disapproval and weary resignation as to the hubris of human beings. Do these brazen publishers and developers not know that this, the year 2024, is the Year of Shadow the Hedgehog?

Sega said as much only a few days ago. They've announced a series of fan celebrations for Sonic Adventure 2's Ultimate Lifeform, beginning in the traditional style with a Shadow-themed MotoGP bike and an associated LEGO tie-in. And now, the earth quakes underfoot as we learn via The Hollywood Reporter that Keanu Reeves, forgotten star of 90s romantic drama A Walk in the Clouds and also those recent John Wick films, will play Shadow in the forthcoming movie adaptation Sonic 3.

I remain the least qualified person alive to appraise Manor Lords an actual strategy game – my village stewardship is proving inept, even by medieval posho standards – but I have delayed economic and social ruin long enough to know it runs well on the Steam Deck. Just as it's smooth low-end performer on desktops, Manor Lords can easily keep its head above 30fps in handheld mode, and that's usually more like 40-45fps with the right visual settings.

Still, there's scope for it to become a much more Deck-friendly game, if not by its April 26th release date then hopefully at least during its early access phase. Faster performance would be nice, sure, but what this citybuilder-meets-RTS-battler really needs for optimal portability is a more refined set of controls.

I sort of reject that the Fallout TV show has Easter eggs hidden in it because it, as a whole, is the equivalent of one of those fancy Hotel Chocolat ostrich-sized patisserie collection bastards that cost 40 quid. However. Eagle-eyed viewers of the Fallout show noted that episode 6 gives you a number for Valt-Tec that you can actually get in touch with - 213-25-VAULT (or, 213-258-2858). Charges apply, as well as international codes if you're outside the US, which makes it 001-213-258-2858.

If you text the number you get a reply from Vault-Tec saying "The next available appointment is 33 weeks from now, please stand by!" (handily captured by X user FanaticalGuy cos my response hasn't come through yet). And then the significantly less immersive "Reply Y to get recurring marketing and other texts from FallOut", which is quite funny. There is speculation that this is just a reference to Vault 33, the vault where main character Lucy was born and raised. On the other hand, 33 weeks from now is November, the month when both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 came out.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Jewelry Available for Pre-Order

The Revolutionary Girl Utena anime series will inspire three new jewelry items based on iconic elements and motifs from the show. The items are available for pre-order from the Chara-Ani online store until April 30, 2024, and they are set to release in Japan sometime in October 2024. [Thanks, Dengeki Hobby!]

The first item in the new line Utena jewelry is a pair of earrings based on the Shadow Play Girls, and they are styled after the silhouette of each shadow girl hanging from a rose. The name of the earrings is a quote referencing the characters' catchphrase. The second one is a ring based on Utena's Sword of Dios, with the blade curled on itself. Meanwhile, the last item is a brooch based on the inverted castle that appears in episode 9 of the anime.

Here are the translated names of each item, alongside their prices:
