Kotaku Tuesday, December 10, 2024 1:10 PM Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a lot of fun. The new game from MachineGames and Bethesda lets you step into the (I assume very muddy and warm) boots of the famous adventurer for an exciting new journey around the world. Along the way you solve ancient puzzles and riddles and, of course, fight Nazis. |
Kotaku Tuesday, December 10, 2024 12:25 PM If you've started playing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Xbox or PC, you might be a few hours into exploring the Vatican City. Kotaku Tuesday, December 10, 2024 11:30 AM Narnia's been done. First as a set of BBC movies and later as an incomplete set of Hollywood blockbusters amid the Harry Potter-fueled YA fiction adaptation goldrush. Kotaku Tuesday, December 10, 2024 10:45 AM Path of Exile 2 is an action-RPG about customizing your hero, killing tons of enemies, and winning cool gear as a result. Kotaku Tuesday, December 10, 2024 10:15 AM The first trailer for 28 YearsLater is here and full of dread. PCGamesN Tuesday, December 10, 2024 12:01 PM Space Marine 2 has just been given a big patch, which not only upgrades resolution upscaling, but also adds frame generation for both Nvidia and AMD GPUs. The Warhammer 40K title has been a major hit, and the new update should massively improve frame rates on handhelds such as the Steam Deck too. Even the best gaming handheld devices aren't really capable of running Space Marine 2 at a steady pace. Valve's Steam Deck gets the shortest end of the stick, with its weaker hardware. However, the newest update's introduction of FSR 3 frame generation should smooth out the frame rate significantly, even if it's not a recommended way to play. PCGamesN Tuesday, December 10, 2024 10:38 AM How do you beat Jamanra the Abomination in Path of Exile 2? Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 1:05 PM Marvel Rivals, the free-to-play hero shooter from NetEase, launched late last week and is exceedingly popular. It's currently fourth on the Steam daily most played, right between Path Of Exile 2 and the evergreen Grand Theft Auto 5. I think there are three reasons for this enthusiasm: 1) it's free-to-play with the usual comet's tail of microtransactables 2) it's third-person Overwatch with Marvel characters, a straightforwardly enticing licensing sandwich, and 3) people want to have sex with a larger-than-usual proportion of the cast and especially awful tongue-monster Venom, who has a good butt in this one. No, I'm not going to share pictures. You'll have to google that filth yourself. But perhaps you are a sophisticated soul who has no time for such salacious nonsense. You're more interested in hearing how they're patching the thing. Enough with the butts already, dang it - this is a new multiplayer game so there must, of course, be patches! Fair enough: here's what NetEase are changing or fixing in the first major update, out now. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 12:18 PM I feel guilty about repeatedly comparing Nebulous: Fleet Command to Homeworld, inasmuch as it's an appalling bait-and-switch. It's like offering somebody a cake that is actually a cunningly painted hunk of torpedo fuselage. It's like offering to shake hands while wearing one of those comedy hand buzzers - except that the hand buzzer is an intricate simulation of zero-G physics, missile behaviours and comms jamming, featuring spacecraft with proper internal layouts that require you to think hard about attitude control if you don't want, say, your engines to become Swiss cheese about 90 seconds before you need to retreat from combat. Being a "true" 3D real-time space strategy game, Nebulous looks and sounds a lot like Homeworld on the surface, but it's nothing like as straightforward. It is systems within systems. It is a game in which you can, theoretically, plot the path of a single guided munition through an asteroid field, so as to catch an enemy cruiser in the back. I barely understand how to make a ship fire on another ship, using plain old armour-piercing shells, and now they're threatening to add carriers, fighters and bombers. Customisable ones! The humanity. Here's a trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 8:39 AM The demo for SNØ: Ultimate Freeriding isn't that new. It actually came out in September, but I'm filing it under the secret best unspoken RPS site category of "News (To Me)", a whizcrack piece of web 3.0 technology that allows us to travel back in time and 'announce' things that don't seem any less noteworthy for their advancing age. If you think that's a desperately cavalier and confusing way to run a news section, I can only suggest that you email a complaint to our news editor. Spoilers: our news editor is me, and I have already thrown your complaint in the bin. Mate, I don't tell you how to do your job, but I'd be more than happy to, if you let me know what it is. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 8:28 AM Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 review: a wonky career mode gives meaning to the formless flight sim London Gatwick Airport is a rare shade of brown, known to neither science nor art. A brown that doesn't appear on the light spectrum. No easel contains it. It is a dusty brown, a damp brown, a hot and earthy brown that hums with the stinging malodour of disturbed ancient moss where once old forests stood. Descending into Gatwick's cloying brown from 33,000 feet is like flying under and up Gandalf's wretched cloak and landing in one of the several horrible little magic pouches he keeps by his balls. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 captures Gatwick's brown perfectly. Next to the stupefying natural beauty of Yosemite, the imposing imperial skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline and the surging majesty of the Alpine peaks, this local rot-tinged patch of West Sussex is the most impressively realistic depiction of a place I have seen in a game. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 7:28 AM Among my last-resort tactics for generating precious PC gaming news is to go on holiday - for as sure as toast lands buttered side down while cats always land on their feet, as sure as the number 13 breeds calamity and Star Citizen committing to a release date guarantees a delay, myself going on holiday will always, somehow, conjure a big story from the crevices. It's basic physics. In this case, I was on holiday from Friday through Monday, and this fact and this fact alone appears to have coaxed some toy manufacturer into taking the internet's most cherished indie gaming platform offline by means of a "bogus" phishing report, sent by "AI-powered" brand protection software. The situation has now been resolved, thankfully, and you can access Itch.io as normal, but I will never pass up the opportunity to cast shade on Funko Pop, whose NFT-garlanded bobbleheads I hate as I do veruccas and forest fires. So here's a quick recap if you, too, missed the drama. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Tuesday, December 10, 2024 7:09 AM Goblin-hitting bonanza Path Of Exile 2 launched into early access last weekend and the devs Grinding Gear Games have dropped some big patch notes that outline some things they've updated already, or things they plan on updating in a future patch. Things like dodge-rolling, checkpoints, items, currencies, and other stuff I can't list here because the intro to this article would expand and pop into a flurry of common rarity boots and bones, maybe with the odd purple rarity sword mixed in. |

HoYoVerse shared a new Zenless Zone Zero trailer for Asaba Harumasa, the free S-rank character, and it hints at a big secret for the Agent. The almost four minute video is a primarily an animated segment, with some gameplay interspersed, as it teases his background.
Editor's Note: The HoYoVerse Zenless Zone Zero Asaba Harumasa Character Demo "When the Crows Perch" features spoilers for the character.
Prior to Asaba being added to the game, early trailers and impressions suggested he was a casual, perhaps even somewhat lazy, member of Section 6. He wears Japanese-style clothing, is an archer with a bow that can turn into blades, and is always wearing a choker with an X on it. The start of his Character Demo video features a more terrified version of the character experiencing flashbacks to his childhood. We see medication on his nightstand and a report with information crossed out.
After getting an assignment, Asaba heads out to work. As he looks in the mirror, we see a moment when instead of his reflection, we see an Ethereal enemy. When he's outside, people are staring at him, taking pictures, asking what he is, suggesting he's a monster who hurt people. From there, it shifts to gameplay footage of him facing Hollow enemies. However, as it does, we also see a flashback of a younger version of Asaba being injected with something and possibly transforming into an Ethereal. From there, we see him head on another assignment, again experiencing flashbacks and sensations that suggest a darker path. When he rescues a child in the Hollow, the kid sees an Ethereal in his place.
Here's the full "When the Crows Perch" Zenless Zone Zero trailer.
Every Zenless Zone Zero player gets Asaba Harumasa for free once the 1.4 update arrives. While he'll also be on the banner, HoYoVerse announced the character will temporarily be sent to everyone's inbox as well. When he's doled out, people will also get all of the necessary items needed to get him to level 40.
Zenless Zone Zero is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Asaba Harumasa joins alongside the 1.4 update on December 18, 2024.

Sony announced that we can now check our 2024 Year in PlayStation Wrap-Up, the annual site that shares stats about our PS4 and PS5 games and experiences. The official site is open for everyone to sign into for details. This is a yearly affair and, as usual, there's a reward for taking part.
When you first sign in, the 2024 Year in PlayStation Wrap-Up site shows you your avatar, mentions the year you joined the PlayStation Network, and shows your trophy score for PS4 and PS5 games. Tapping the Let's Go button reveals how many total games you played, then breaks that down into PS4 and and PS5 titles. It will also show the first game you played on a Sony system this year, such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
From there, it will break things down into finer details. Your top five games will be revealed. This will include insights into how many hours you spent with each one, trophies earned, and what percentage of your total playtime it made up. Your "gaming style" will be revealed, based on genre you played most. So if someone played a lot of RPGs and JRPGs, they'd be billed a "Role Player." The Calendar page shows a month-by-month breakdown with the Game of the Month and stats about how much you played. The reveal also goes over how many hours you played and on which system, as well as trophies earned. Social stats are discussed too.
There are some marketing elements included in this. A PlayStation Plus Playlist comes up as part of the Wrap-Up. This suggests "for you" games and PlayStation Classics, as a means of encouraging those of us with the console to subscribe to different tiers of the service.
At the end of the 2024 Year in PlayStation Wrap-Up, you can share your PS4 and PS5 game stats and get a digital reward. Everyone gets a code for a free avatar they can use with their account. While the code is there, you can also tap a button to immediately head to the PlayStation Store and redeem it.

The character designs for the One Piece Fan Letter anime short were reportedly created using the Nintendo Mii avatar creator. The latest issue of the Newtype magazine in Japan includes an interview with the production staff where they discuss the creation of the characters. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]
According to leaker ryokutya2089, One Piece Fan Letter Animation Director Keisuke Mori said in a recent interview that the concept for the character designs were handled by Director and Co-writer Megumi Ishitani. Mori added that, when he asked for a simple depiction of the characters, Ishitani handed their designs in the form of Mii avatar characters that she had created.
Ishitani explained that she likes the Mii creator method because it is easy to overdesign a character by accident in an illustration, while the limitations of the Mii character creator allowed her to narrow down the individual characteristics of each character and made easier to see what makes them unique. Mori concluded by saying that this method made easier to visualize the characters, and from there they used the Mii characters as a template and made the designs into the style of One Piece characters.
The One Piece Fan Letter anime is an short loosely based on the One Piece novel Straw Hat Stories. It was released in October 20, 2024 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the anime series and is available on Netflix.
In other recent One Piece news, Japanese voice actor Kazuki Yao announced that he will retire from voicing Franky, and his successor will be announced during Jump Festa 2025.
The One Piece anime is streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix, while the manga is handled by Viz Media outside Japan. The live-action One Piece adaptation is available on Netflix.

Good Smile Company has opened global pre-orders for the upcoming Pop Up Parade figure of the female version of Byleth Eisner from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The figure is available to order via the Japanese international web store at ¥5,500. People residing in the U.S. and Canada can instead place their orders on Good Smile Online Shop U.S. at $33.99. The company will release the figure worldwide in 2025.
After the initial reveals in July 2024 and the unpainted prototype previews in August 2024, the female Byleth figure is set to follow her male counterpart that has been available to order earlier in November 2024. However, while most Pop Up Parade figures stand at around 17-18cm (6.69-7.08in), this figure will only have a total height of around 15cm (5.90in).
Here are some of the sample images for the upcoming figure:
Good Smile Company has been producing more Pop Up Parade figures based on Fire Emblem: Three Houses to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the game Nintendo released on the Switch in July 2019. The Byleth figures won't be the end of the line, as the company has also teased upcoming figures modeled after Dorothea Arnault, Sylvain Jose Gautier, and Hilda Valentine Goneril. Back in 2022, the company sold figures of Edelgard, Bernadetta, Dimitri, Felix, Claude, and Lysithea from the same lineup.
The pre-order window for the Pop Up Parade figure of the female Byleth Eisner from Fire Emblem: Three Houses will close on January 22, 2025. Good Smile Company will start shipping the finished figures from Japan in July 2025 and North America in Q4 2025. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is available on the Nintendo Switch.

Sony released a new trailer that highlights some PS5 games coming in 2025, specifically suggesting they're "great" and potentially some of the best. Quite a few of the recommended PS5 titles are multiplatform games, such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
The new trailer begins with a teaser image highlighting some of the seven featured PS5 games debuting in 2025. However, that does omit ones like Borderlands 4. Here's the full list of everything shown in the video, as well as the launch windows and release dates.
In each case, some gameplay footage is shown for each of the recommended 2025 PS5 games. Things begin with a look at Ghost of Yotei. From there, we get to see what Sam will be up to in Death Stranding 2. The PS5 version of Monster Hunter Wilds is the focus after that. That is followed by Goro Majima heading out to sea in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Assassin's Creed Shadows gameplay follows that. We get to see some of Little Nightmares 3 for a bit. Borderlands 4 sneaks in after that, as does DOOM: The Dark Ages. Mafia: The Old Country and Hell is Us are highlighted after that. Finally, it all ends with footage from games like Forever Skies, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Civilization VII, Baby Steps, The Midnight Walk, and Where Winds Meet.
Here's the full trailer from Sony.
The first one of the highlighted games to appear will be Dynasty Warriors: Origins. It will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on January 17, 2025.

Square Enix and Lightspeed Studios have published a new trailer for Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. It showcases the jobs that will be available at FFXIV Mobile. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
While there is a YouTube channel for the mobile game that contains videos in English and Japanese, this new trailer appeared first on the Chinese website Weibo. The trailer, which is around three minutes long, features nine different jobs. All of them also happened to comprise the complete list of regular jobs that appeared in the version 2.0 launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Here is the complete list of jobs featured in the new FFXIV Mobile trailer, based on their order of appearance:
Despite being a mobile game, it won't have any gacha features as Lightspeed Studios seeks to base the game's experience on the original MMORPG that has been available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X. As a side note, Square Enix has still yet to include China in the list of supported countries for the global releases of the original Final Fantasy XIV on PC and consoles as of 2024.
Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will be available in multiple countries and territories worldwide—including China—for Android and iOS mobile devices.

When the original Path of Exile released back in 2013, it offered an alternative to the previous year's Diablo 3, which had turned off many players with divisive features like a real money auction house and cartoonier art style. But it soon proved to be more than just a call back to classic Diablo, setting itself apart with ludicrous build complexity, vibrant end-game, and regular updates. Now developer Grinding Gear Games is looking to improve its systems with a simultaneously supported sequel, as Path of Exile 2 looks to expand and refine its action-RPG formula.
Launching in Early Access with three acts of the campaign and a bevy of endgame content, Path of Exile 2's launch was rocky even by modern online game standards thanks to a huge influx of players. Thankfully, the developers appeared to get on top of it quite quickly. Though I still experienced a few hiccups and disconnections, it's now pretty stable. I can only hope the turbulence of the EA launch gives Grinding Gear the information they need to prep for the free-to-play floodgates opening later in 2025.
Once in the game proper, you'll be hit with a character selection screen that lets you know that same gritty Path of Exile tone is back in full force. Whichever class of character you don't choose is immediately executed by hanging. Your chosen character miraculously escapes, and it's on to fighting undead in the wilderness like old times, complete with the first living person you meet being immediately torn apart by a zombie.
As a sequel, Path of Exile 2 has a bunch of subtle, but impactful, changes from the previous game. The combat is a good bit slower and a lot tougher from the get-go, requiring players to come to grips with new defensive abilities like the dodge-roll and shield block. The economy is also no longer strictly barter-based, but uses gold instead, and flasks are no longer combinable like they used to be. Those latter two are a shame, since they were interesting mechanic that gave value to other items, but removing them does streamline things and free up inventory space significantly.
Of the classes, the two new, most different ones are the crossbow-toting Mercenary and wind-swift Monk. The merc has a really interesting and different style of play during which abilities augment your basic attack with ammo types, rather than being attacks of their own. Some are piercing shots, some are rapid-fire, and some fire grenades instead of bolts. One could strip armor from foes with enough hits, which could be exploited with another type of bolt for bonus damage. The Monk, meanwhile, is ridiculously fast and uses the new quarterstaff weapon type. It is able to exploit multiple elements as they build momentum. That wasn't my immediate pick to try but they grew on me massively.
While the new classes are fun and engaging, I'm interested to see what Grinding Gear will do with returning classes to avoid overlap. On the full launch, there are expected to be another six classes. This means there will be a total of two for each combination of Strength, Intelligence, and Dexterity. Classes in Path of Exile have historically been less important, since all of them essentially share the same skill tree, though there are things like Ascendancies and particular skill nodes that are unique to them. That said, the Witch and Sorceress are both pure intelligence classes and do play quite similarly, so I'm hoping some of the others have a bit more unique flavour. Oh, and a female strength class would be nice too.
Another small, but welcome, change from the first game is the environment variety. While Path of Exile had you trudging the desolate beaches of Wraeclast for the lion's share of the early game, Path of Exile 2 has several varieties of forests, caves, and mausoleums for you to slaughter through within the first few hours. I particularly liked one called the Red Vale, the site of an ancient battlefield strewn with rust-stained weaponry and devolved monsters.
Once you've hacked your way up to around level 65 or so, the endgame begins. I've barely scratched the surface but there's already a surprising amount of variety in the modes available, each managing to keep slaying hordes of monsters engaging despite how used to it you've gotten. Some grant rogue-lite style power ups as you progress or ask you to gamble your rewards on exponential returns. And I've not even mentioned the skill tree yet, mostly because It Scares Me.
It's early days yet, we have yet to experience the true extent of the end-game or how the community and economies will form around it, but Path of Exile 2 is a solid start and an engaging ARPG already. The real test will be how Grinding Gear experiments on that foundation with future leagues, but with all of the first game's mechanics to pull from and refine, I'm pretty excited to see what they come up with.
Path of Exile 2 is available now in early access for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
