Welcome to the Week in Review
Welcome
Apple’s annual developers conference, affectionately known as WWDC, is about far more than just AI. Apple will use the week-long event – and especially the keynote that we now know will happen on June 9 – to spell out its plans for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS. I assume it will try to do that while everyone is asking, “But what about Apple Intelligence?”

After missing a crucial delivery deadline (at least for the full experience) Apple has a lot of work to do in the AI space. There are of course ideas for how Apple can make lemonade out of lemons (see below) but the fixation on Apple Intelligence is just another reminder of the central role AI now plays in our lives. Every new update is met with excitement, and sometimes consternation. Just look at the ChatGPT 4o image update we got this week – it was all fun and games until some complained that it besmirched Studio Ghibli’s reputation. Even the Google AI search update is prompting a fair bit of introspection as we wonder if traditional web search is about to go “poof!”

Sometimes, it’s nice to leave AI behind and focus on the physical world, like the still-emerging category of foldable phones. Apple has yet to join the fray, but one of our writers has mostly good things to say about their experience with the current category leader, the Samsung Galaxy Z fold 6 (I love that foldable phone, too).

When tech isn’t inspiring or confusing us, it’s making us angry, or at least angry at the companies that produce it. Just look at Garmin, which managed to set off a firestorm this week simply by announcing a new premium service – although it does involve putting some pretty cool and desirable features behind a paywall, so the uproar isn’t without some justification.

There was some fun to be had this week too, including a raft of Nintendo announcements, and I finally got to catch up with the latest show that everyone’s talking about, Adolescence on Netflix. If you haven’t watched it yet, this weekend is your chance to binge the four-episode limited series. It’s not an easy watch, but the single-shot-per-episode style is simply astonishing, and worth the price of admission on its own. If that’s not your cup of tea, check out our other must-stream recommendations for the weekend.
