| | Truly world-changing tech doesn't arrive all that often – so all hail OpenAI's Sora 2, the latest addition to that hallowed hall of fame.
The Sora app is already breaking download records (beating even ChatGPT) in the few days since it launched, and understandably so. TechRadar's Editor at Large is one of the lucky souls to have received an invite to the platform, and he describes it as an "astonishing accomplishment", albeit one that is "sure to ruin everything". How can it be both of those things? You'll have to scroll down to find out – but be aware that you will then want to get your name on the waitlist too, because it is genuinely exciting tech.
Of course smartphones have already changed the world, so we tend to take them for granted these days. But that’s unfair – because if you take a step back to appreciate the modern smartphone it is a truly incredible feat of engineering.
Take the iPhone 17 Pro Max, for instance. This week, we pitched it against its major rivals and predecessors in a special battery life showdown, and as our results show it lasted for an astonishing 17 hours and 54 minutes. Given that the original iPhone, 18 years ago, was quoted as having “Internet use of up to 6 hours”, that’s a seriously impressive upgrade.
Will Sora still be around in 18 years? Who knows. But if it is, and if it continues to improve as fast as it has so far in its short life, it will be almost unimaginably powerful by then. Life could be about to get very different...
